ECAR-6599 Rev 0 PCAT Walls Temperature Distribution, Beryllium Inserts and Fuel-to-Fuel Gap Tolerance Analysis

This document reports the primary coolant system structures temperature distribution for the Primary Coolant Apparatus Test (PCAT) of the MARVEL microreactor. The temperature distributions have been calculated using the RELAP5-3D system code, using one-dimensional approximation, and considering radial heat losses, effects of thermal insulators, and hot spot factors. Sensitivities on the Be inserts dimensions tolerances and heater-to-heater pitch has been also performed, investigating the effects on the NaK and heater cartridge sheath temperatures.

Corrosion characteristics of silicon carbide fiber-reinforced composites in beryllium-bearing molten fluoride salt

Corrosion of SiC-fiber reinforced SiC matrix composites in 2LiF-BeF 2 molten salt was examined following static molten salt exposure for 1000 h at 650 and 750 °C. Composites were fabricated with either Tyranno SA3 or Hi-Nicalon type-S fibers and a chemical vapor infiltration SiC matrix. Both composites showed minimal weight loss after salt exposure and maintained shape. Corrosion was characterized by comprehensive electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy. In conclusion, based on the results of experimental and thermodynamic analysis, a corrosion mechanism for SiC/SiC is proposed where both the salt and SiC materials play a key role in the phase stability of the composite.

Thick target neutron yields from Beryllium, Carbon, Tungsten, and Lead targets irradiated by 26.7 MeV/nucleon 4 H e ions

The angular and energy distributions of secondary neutrons produced from 26.7 MeV/nucleon 4 He ions, stopping in thick Be, C, W and Pb targets are measured by the time of flight method. The GEANT4, PHITS, and FLUKA Monte Carlo simulation codes with different physics models are employed to simulate the neutron yields and the results are compared with the experimental data. For the thick Be and C targets, GEANT4 with INCL++ reproduces the experimental data reasonably well. Whereas PHITS with JQMD-2.0 overestimates the neutron yields at intermediate energies and FLUKA with PEANUT underestimated the neutron yields at intermediate energies. For W and Pb targets, FLUKA with PEANUT physics model agree with experimental data best. PHITS with JQMD-2.0 overestimates the neutron yield at intermediate energies at 0°, and GEANT4 with INCL++ underestimates the neutron yield at intermediate energies at three angles.

Impact of MURR LEU Conversion on Beryllium Reflector Lifetime

The U.S. National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) Office of Material Management and Minimization (M 3 ) has developed and is pursuing an integrated approach to address the persistent threat posed by unintentional proliferation of nuclear materials. The NNSA M 3 approach reduces the risk of highly enriched uranium (HEU) and plutonium falling into the hands of non-state actors by minimizing the use of and, when possible, eliminating weapons-usable nuclear material around the world. In this geopolitical context, most research and test reactors, both domestic and international, have completed or started a program of conversion from the use of HEU to low-enriched uranium (LEU) as fuel.

Quantify Sodium Fluoride / Beryllium Fluoride Salt Properties for a Liquid Fueled Fluoride Molten Salt Reactor (CRADA C2018-18168 Final Report)

ThorCon is developing a thermal thorium-uranium fueled molten salt reactor that uses a fuel salt consisting of NaF - BeF 2 - ThF 4 - UF 4 - UF 3 , which uses 19.75% enriched uranium. It is not a breeder reactor but requires regular additions of fissile material. A thorough understanding of the thermophysical properties of the fuel salt at the beginning (BOL) and end (EOL) of its life is critical to establishing its thermal hydraulic behavior and enables ThorCon to design a system with the required natural convection. Experimentally determining the heat capacity and thermal conductivity of the fuel salt will provide data necessary for detailed system design and safety analysis.
