Reliability computation from reliability block diagrams

A method and a computer program are presented to calculate probability of system success from an arbitrary reliability block diagram. The class of reliability block diagrams that can be handled include any active/standby combination of redundancy, and the computations include the effects of dormancy and switching in any standby redundancy. The mechanics of the program are based on an extension of the probability tree method of computing system probabilities.

The formation and analysis of a 5 deg equal area block terrestrial gravity field

A set of 23,355 1 degree x 1 degree mean free air anomalies were used to predict a set of 5 degree equal area anomalies and their standard errors. Using the 1 degree data incorporating geophysically predicted values of ACIC, 1283 5 degree blocks were computed. Excluding the geophysically predicted anomalies 1249 blocks were computed. The 1 degree data were also used to compute covariance functions and the equatorial gravity and flattening implied by this data. The predicted anomalies were supplemented by model anomalies to form a complete 1654 global anomaly field. These data were used in a weighted least squares to determine potential coefficients to degree 15, and in a summation type formulation to determine potential coefficients to degree 25. These potential coefficients sets are compared to recent satellite determinations.

Mission building blocks for outer solar system exploration.

Description of the technological building blocks required for exploring the outer planets with maximum scientific yields under stringent resource constraints. Two generic spacecraft types are considered: the Mariner and the Pioneer. Following a discussion of the outer planet mission constraints, the evolutionary development of spacecraft, probes, and propulsion building blocks is presented. Then, program genealogies are shown for Pioneer and Mariner missions and advanced propulsion systems to illustrate the soundness of a program based on spacecraft modification rather than on the development of new spacecraft for each mission. It is argued that, for minimum costs, technological advancement should occur in an evolutionary manner from mission to mission. While this strategy is likely to result in compromises on specific missions, the realization of the overall objectives calls for an advance commitment to the entire mission series.

REDUCE 2: A computer program for the symbolic reduction of large block diagrams

REDUCE 2 is reported as a FORMAC program which symbolically calculates the transfer function(s) of any linear-block-diagram output variable to any or all input variables. The program requires as input a set of algebraic expressions representing the block diagram, the desired transfer function(s), and a string of variables indicating the desired order of reduction. The solution is presented in the compact form of a set of nested functions (super G's). The program can handle systems as large as 600 equations and is intended as a tool for the analysis of complex control and dynamic systems. A companion FORTRAN program, EVAL 2, which numerically evaluates the solution set to obtain amplitude ratio and phase angle as functions of frequency is also presented.

Development of a blocking orifice thermal diode heat pipe

A new geometry is described for low temperature diode heat pipes employing excess liquid to block the vapor space of the evaporator and part of the transport section during reverse mode conditions. An orifice plate is placed in the pipe at the blocking meniscus location, with the opening arranged to permit proper liquid distribution in both ground tests and zero 'g' operation. Parametric analytical results are presented for several fluids (carbon tetrafluoride, methane, and ethane). Experimental data is presented for a room temperature diode verifying feasibility, and a 1/4 in. O.D. cryogenic diode with methane working fluid.

An interdisciplinary study of the estuarine and coastal oceanography of Block Island Sound and adjacent New York coastal waters

The author has identified the following significant results. Photo-optical additive color quantitative measurements were made of ERTS-1 reprocessed positives of New York Bight and Block Island Sound. Regression of these data on almost simultaneous ship sample data of water's physical, chemical, biological, and optical properties showed that ERTS bands 5 and 6 can be used to predict the absolute value of the total number of particles and bands 4 and 5 to predict the relative extinction coefficient in New York Bight. Water masses and mixing patterns in Block Island Sound heretofore considered transient were found to be persistent phenomena requiring revision of existing mathematical and hydraulic models.

HEAO Block 2 study executive summary

An executive summary is presented of a preliminary study done on several potential High Energy Astronomy Observatory (HEAO) missions which are follow-on missions to the currently defined HEAO program. The purpose was to examine several typical missions and determine the relative complexities associated with them. The four payloads investigated were (1) a 1.2 m Diameter X-ray Telescope observatory, (2) a Large Area Moderate Angular Resolution (LAMAR) observatory, (3) a cosmic ray observatory, and (4) a gamma ray observatory. Each of the four observatories was considered a national facility. Low cost approaches were stressed throughout, with considerable use of HEAO Block I experience and designs effected to provide a high degree of confidence that such approaches were achievable. The use of the Multi-Mission Spacecraft (MMS) and the HEAO Block I spacecraft was considered as a result of this low cost emphasis. Also, NASA standard components were considered, where applicable.

Performance of some block codes on a Gaussian channel

A technique proposed by Chase (1972) is used to evaluate the performance of several fairly long binary block codes on a wideband additive Gaussian channel. Considerations leading to the use of Chase's technique are discussed. Chase's concepts are first applied to the most powerful practical class of binary codes, the BCH codes with Berlekamp's (1972) decoding algorithm. Chase's algorithm is then described along with proposed selection of candidate codes. Results are presented of applying Chase's algorithm to four binary codes: (23, 12) Golay code, (32, 16) second-order Reed-Muller code, (63, 36) 5-error correcting BCH code, and (95, 39) 9-error correcting shortened BCH code. It is concluded that there are many block codes of length not exceeding 100 with extremely attractive maximum likelihood decoding performance on a Gaussian channel. BCH codes decoded via Berlekamp's binary decoding algorithm and Chase's idea are close to being practical competitors to short-constraint length convolutional codes with Viterbi decoding.

An improved upper bound on the block coding error exponent for binary input discrete memoryless channels

For coded telemetry systems it is important to know the tradeoff between the error probability and the complexity of implementation. For systems using block codes, the block coding error exponent is a good way to estimate this tradeoff. The new upper bounds on the minimum distance of binary codes result in improved upper bounds on the coding error exponents for binary input memoryless channels.

Large space erectable structures - building block structures study

A modular planar truss structure and a long slender boom concept identified as building block approaches to construction of large spacecraft configurations are described. The concepts are compatible in weight and volume goals with the Space Transportation System, use standard structural units, and represent high on-orbit productivity in terms of structural area or beam length. Results of structural trade studies involving static and dynamic analyses of a single module and rigid body deployment analyses to assess kinetics and kinematics of automatic deployment of the building block modules are presented.

Multi-purpose wind tunnel reaction control model block

A reaction control system nozzle block is provided for testing the response characteristics of space vehicles to a variety of reaction control thruster configurations. A pressurized air system is connected with the supply lines which lead to the individual jet nozzles. Each supply line terminates in a compact cylindrical plenum volume, axially perpendicular and adjacent to the throat of the jet nozzle. The volume of the cylindrical plenum is sized to provide uniform thrust characteristics from each jet nozzle irrespective of the angle of approach of the supply line to the plenum. Each supply line may be plugged or capped to stop the air supply to selected jet nozzles, thereby enabling a variety of nozzle configurations to be obtained from a single model nozzle block.

Comparison of convolutional and block code performance on the Rician channel

The paper is concerned with the relative performance of short constraint length convolutional codes vis-a-vis block codes when used in conjunction with either BPSK or DPSK modulation on the classical Rician fading channel. A variety of soft-decision decoding algorithms is considered for block codes while the Viterbi algorithm is used exclusively for decoding convolutional codes. Results indicate a substantial performance/complexity advantage in favor of short constraint length convolutional codes and Viterbi decoding which increases with fading severity. The work reported here extends the well-known performance advantage of convolutional codes on the AWGN channel to representative fading channels.

Minimax decoding of cyclic block codes

A minimax decoding algorithm utilizing soft bit detection of an (n,k) cyclic block code is described which will permit the correction of up to n-k bit errors interspersed at random locations throughout the block. The decoding solution consists of: (1) identifying the ordered soft bit set and, (2) finding the minimum order solution to the resulting syndrome equations where the nonzero error vector components are constrained to be a subset of the soft bit set. An efficient implementation of the decoding operation is described. In essence, this algorithm focuses the correction capability of the code on those bit positions which have the lowest a posteriori probabilities of correct detection.
