Direct observation of Mn distribution/speciation within and surrounding a basidiomycete fungus in the production of Mn-oxides important in toxic element containment

Biogenic manganese (Mn) oxides occur ubiquitously in the environment including the uranium (U) mill tailings at the Ningyo-toge U mine in Okayama, Japan, being important in the sequestration of radioactive radium (Ra). To understand the nanoscale processes in Mn oxides formation at the U mill tailings site, Mn 2+ absorption by a basidiomycete fungus, Coprinopsis urticicola, isolated from Ningyo-toge mine water samples, was investigated in the laboratory under controlled conditions utilizing electron microscopy, synchrotron-based X-ray analysis, and fluorescence microscopy with molecular pH probe. The fungus’ growth was first investigated in an agar-solidified medium supplemented with 1.0 mmol/L of Mn 2+ , ± Cu 2+ (50 – 200 µM), ± Zn 2+ (50 – 200 µM), or ± diphenyleneiodonium chloride (DPI) (50 – 100 µM) at 25 °C. The results revealed that Zn 2+ has no significant effects on the Mn oxides formation, whereas Cu 2+ and DPI significantly inhibit both fungal growth and Mn oxidation, indicating superoxide-mediated Mn oxidation. During the interaction of Mn 2+ with the fungi in solution medium at the initial pH of 5.67, a small fraction of Mn 2+ infiltrated into the fungal hyphae within 8 h, forming a few tens nm-sized concentrates of soluble Mn2+ in the intracellular pH of ~6.5, which can be released back to solution within a day as shown in a subsequent releasing experiment. After 1 day of incubation, Mn oxides began to precipitate on the hyphae, which were characterized to be fibrous nanocrystals with a hexagonal birnessite-structure, these forming spherical aggregates with a diameter of ~1.5 µm. When the fungi were reacted using the Ningyo-toge mine water, the Mn concentration decreased at a rate of 1.0 mmol·day-1 per unit dry weight. The nanoscale processes associated with the fungi derived from the Ningyo-toge mine area provides additional insights into the existing mechanisms of Mn oxidation by filamentous fungi at other U mill tailings sites under circumneutral pH conditions. Such processes add to the class of reactions important to the sequestration of toxic elements.

Experiments On A Conduction Cooled Superconducting Radio Frequency Cavity With Field Emission Cathode

To achieve Ampere-class electron beam accelerators the pulse delivery rate need to be much higher than the typical photo injector repetition rate of the order of a few kilohertz. We propose here an injector which can, in principle, generate electron bunches at the same rate as the operating RF frequency. A conduction-cooled superconducting radio frequency (SRF) cavity operating in the CW mode and housing a field emission element at its region of high axial electric field can be a viable method of generating high-repetition-rate electron bunches. In this paper, we report the development and experiments on a conduction-cooled Nb3Sn cavity with a niobium rod intended as a field emitter support. The initial experiments demonstrate 0.4 MV/m average accelerating gradient, which is equivalent of peak gradient of 3.2 MV/m. The measured RF cavity quality factor is 1.4 x 10$^8$ slightly above our goal. The achieved field gradient is limited by the relatively low input RF power and by the poor coupling between the external power supply and the RF cavity. With ideal coupling the field gradient can be as high as 0.6 MV/m still below our goal of about 1 MV/m.

Quantifying uncertainty in high-throughput density functional theory: A comparison of AFLOW, Materials Project, and OQMD

A central challenge in high-throughput density functional theory (HT-DFT) calculations is selecting a combination of input parameters and postprocessing techniques that can be used across all materials classes, while also managing accuracy-cost tradeoffs. To investigate the effects of these parameter choices, we consolidate three large HT-DFT databases: Automatic-FLOW (AFLOW), the Materials Project (MP), and the Open Quantum Materials Database (OQMD), and compare reported properties across each pair of databases for materials calculated using the same initial crystal structure. We find that HT-DFT formation energies and volumes are generally more reproducible than band gaps and total magnetizations; for instance, a notable fraction of records disagree on whether a material is metallic (up to 7%) or magnetic (up to 15%). The variance between calculated properties is as high as 0.105 eV/atom (median relative absolute difference, or MRAD, of 6%) for formation energy, 0.65 Å 3 / atom (MRAD of 4%) for volume, 0.21 eV (MRAD of 9%) for band gap, and 0.15 μB/ formula unit (MRAD of 8%) for total magnetization, comparable to the differences between DFT and experiment. Here, we trace some of the larger discrepancies to choices involving pseudopotentials, the DFT + U formalism, and elemental reference states, and argue that further standardization of HT-DFT would be beneficial to reproducibility.

Gamma Radiation Effects in Amorphous and Crystalline Polyaryletherketones

This work investigates the effect of gamma radiation on chain scission and crosslinking in polyaryletherketone (PAEK) thermoplastic filaments, namely, polyetheretherketone (PEEK) and polyetherketoneketone (PEKK) that is either semicrystalline (PEKK-c) or highly amorphous (PEKK-a). The PAEK thermoplastic filaments were exposed to total ionizing doses (TID) of gamma radiation from 1 to 8 MGy in the Gamma Irradiation Facility at Sandia National Laboratories. A combination of thermal and FT-IR spectral analysis of the irradiated specimens was used to study the chain scission and crosslinking behavior between PEEK, PEKK-c, and PEKK-a. Crystallinity decreased with increased TID and melt enthalpy decreased. Despite clear indications of changes to melt and crystallization behavior, any change to the glass-transition temperature was minor until a post-irradiation thermal annealing occurred, which caused an increase in crystallinity. Gamma radiation impacted PEKK-a more due to the lower degree of initial crystallinity, where a reduction in melt enthalpy, crystallinity, and crystallization kinetics was observed. Despite these effects, the ability to achieve a higher degree of crystallization (X c < 20%) by annealing was not affected. The results presented here provide important insight into the performance of a class of commercialized PEKK thermoplastics exposed to a harsh radiation environment.

Investigation of Hierarchical Structure Formation in Merocyanine Photovoltaics

Merocyanines (MCs) are a versatile class of small-molecule dyes. Their optoelectronic properties are easily tunable by chemically controlling their donor–acceptor strength, and their structural properties can be tuned by simple side-chain substitution. This paper demonstrates a novel series of MCs featuring an indoline donor with varying hydrocarbon side-chain length (from 6 to 12 carbons) and a tert-butyl-thiazole acceptor, labeled InTBT. Bulk heterojunction organic photovoltaics are fabricated with a [6,6]-phenyl-C 61 -butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) acceptor and characterized. Films composed of I8TBT:PCBM and I9TBT:PCBM produced the highest power conversion efficiency of 4.5%, which suggests that the morphology is optimized by controlling the side-chain length. Hierarchical structure formation in InTBT:PCBM films is studied using grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (GIXRD), small-angle neutron scattering (SANS), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). When mixed with PCBM, InTBTs with ≤8 side-chain carbons form pure crystalline domains, while InTBTs with ≥9 side-chain carbons mix well with PCBM. SANS demonstrates that increasing side-chain length increases the InTBT-rich domain size. In addition, a branched hexyl–dodecyl side-chain IHDTBT:PCBM film was studied and found to exhibit the worst-performance organic photovoltaic (OPV) device. The large-branched side chain inhibited mixing between IHDTBT and PCBM resulting in large segregated phases.

K–Co–Mo–S x chalcogel: high-capacity removal of Pb 2+ and Ag + and the underlying mechanisms

Chalcogenide-based aerogels, known as chalcogels, represent a novel class of nanoparticle-based porous amorphous materials characterized by high surface polarizability and Lewis base properties, exhibiting promising applications in clean energy and separation science. This work presents a K–Co–Mo–S x (KCMS) chalcogel as a highly efficient sorbent for heavy metal ions and details its sorption mechanisms. Its incoherent structure comprises Mo 2 V (S 2 ) 6 and Mo 3 IV S(S 6 ) 2 anion-like clusters with four- and six-coordinated Co–S polyhedra, forming a Co–Mo–S covalent network that hosts K + ions through electrostatic attraction. The interactions of KCMS with heavy metal ions, particularly Pb 2+ and Ag + , reveal that KCMS is exceptionally effective in removing these ions from ppm concentrations down to trace levels (≤5 ppb). KCMS rapidly removes Ag + (≈81.7%) and Pb 2+ (≈99.5%) within five minutes, achieving >99.9% removal within an hour, with a distribution constant K d ≥10 8 mL g -1 . KCMS exhibits an impressive removal capacity of 1378 mg g -1 for Ag + and 1146 mg g -1 for Pb 2+ , establishing it as one of the most effective materials known to date for heavy metal removal. This material is also effective for the removal of Ag + and Pb 2+ along with Hg 2+ , Ni 2+ , Cu 2+ , and Cd 2+ from various water sources even in the presence of highly concentrated and chemically diverse cations, anions, and organic species. Analysis of the post-interacted KCMS by synchrotron X-ray pair distribution function (PDF), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) revealed that the sorption of Pb 2+ , Ag + , and Hg 2+ mainly occurs by the exchange of K + and Co 2+ . Despite being amorphous, this material exhibits unprecedented ion-exchange mechanisms both for the ionically and covalently bound K + and Co 2+ , respectively. In conclusion, this discovery advances our knowledge of amorphous gels and guides material synthesis principles for the highly selective and efficient removal of heavy metal ions from water.

An atomistic study connecting underlying dislocation behavior with superior mechanical properties of NiCoCr medium entropy alloy

NiCoCr-based medium-entropy alloy (MEA) with a simple face-centered cubic crystal phase exhibits excellent mechanical properties, often attributed to the synergy of multiple deformation mechanisms. However, the atomistic origin of their outstanding mechanical response, including microstructural evolution and dislocation behavior under varying strain-rates and orientation, remains unclear. In this work, we employ large-scale molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to investigate the changes in deformation mechanisms along three distinct orientations ([110], [111], [100]) under varying strain rates (1 ×10 8 /sec, 1 ×10 10 /sec, 1 ×10 12 /sec) in the NiCoCr MEA. The presence of the stair-rod and the Shockley partial dislocations under uniaxial tensile strain are found to play a key role in the formation of deformation twinning and ε-martensite, which positively correlates with strain-rate dependent dislocation analysis. These findings further establish the role of the dislocations in controlling the superior mechanical response and excellent fracture toughness of the NiCoCr MEA. Systematic transmission-electron microscopy tests performed on the [111]-oriented crystals, deformed at different strain levels, at room temperature provide clear evidence of both the extended stacking-fault and the stair rods, confirming the predicted microstructural features. Finally, this study offers key insights into the complex nucleation mechanisms of deformation twinning and ε-martensite, such as twinning – and transformation–induced plasticity (TWIP-TRIP), providing valuable guidelines for studying similar material classes.

Superhorizon isocurvature fluctuations relax tensions

Here, we present a new class of models that have potential to alleviate tensions present in the cosmological data today. We postulate about variation in the sound horizon scale on superhorizon scales, i.e., on scales that are larger than that of the present observable low-redshift Universe (≳ 1Gpc) while at the same time smaller than the largest scales probed by the cosmic microwave background (CMB) (≲ 10Gpc). In this scenario, CMB peaks are naturally smoothed as preferred by the Planck data, while at the same time the low-redshift baryon acoustic oscillation calibration is partially decoupled from the CMB. Taking superhorizon variations in baryon fraction as an example and using approximate modeling, we find improvement in the best fit Planck power spectrum model Δχ 2 ~ 6 for 1 extra degree of freedom with the relevant extension parameter 10 3 σ b = 2.10 ± 0.60, implying about 10% variations in baryon fraction across the Universe. At the same time, S 8 drops by about 1 sigma, easing tension with weak lensing surveys. We find that the combination of Planck 2018 data, eBOSS BAO data, and Riess et al. distance ladder Hubble parameter determination produce a satisfactory fit in our model if we allow for a phantom dark energy equation of state.

Dispersion Leverage Coronagraph: a nulling coronagraph for use on primary objective grating telescopes

Here, we present the Dispersion Leverage Coronagraph (DLC), a variation of the Achromatic Interfero Coronagraph (AIC) that is designed for optical systems featuring large, dispersive primary objective gratings. DLC was originally designed for the Diffractive Interfero Coronagraph Exoplanet Resolver (DICER), a notional 20 m class infrared space telescope utilizing the enhanced one-dimensional angular resolution of large diffraction gratings to discover and characterize near-Earth exoplanets. Here we develop the theoretical foundation for DLC, and apply it to DICER as an example use case. We derive important properties of the DLC system, including focal plane transmission maps, stellar leakage, residual optical path difference tolerance, and pointing error/jitter considerations. Ultimately, we found that DLC effectively nulls an on-axis target across the entire spectrum in the focal plane, allowing for 2D/λ diffraction-limited imaging. It requires asymmetrical fine-guidance tolerances on pointing error/jitter. We work through a benchmark DICER design, explaining the need for a second disperser to reduce background from Zodiacal light, and showing that it could plausibly find and characterize ∼4 nearby, habitable exoplanets around Sun-like stars in a 7-year mission; about 30% of the habitable exoplanets within 8 pc were found in our simulation. The DLC may be useful for any application requiring extremely high-resolution, close companion spectroscopy.

Data from: 'Abiotic influences on continuous conifer forest structure across a subalpine watershed'

This package archives the core data used for analysis and inference in 'Abiotic influences on continuous conifer forest structure across a subalpine watershed' (Worsham et al., 2025). All data were collected in the East River, Washington Gulch, Slate River, and Coal Creek watersheds of Colorado. In the paper, we quantified the relative influence of climate, topographic, edaphic, and geologic factors on conifer stand structure and composition, and their functional relationships, at the watershed scale. We used waveform LiDAR data to derive spatially continuous stand structure metrics. We fused these with a species-level classification map to estimate tree species abundance. We applied generalized additive and generalized boosted models to evaluate the covariability of structural and compositional metrics with abiotic variables. The package contains the essential products required for reproducing our analysis and the tables and figures reported in the publication. The products comprise four classes: (1) geospatial data, (2) tabular data used for inferential analysis, (3) tabular data describing analytical results and performance statistics, and (4) a data user guide. (1) includes discretized waveform LiDAR data, locations and attributes of individual tree crowns, sampling locations and domain boundaries, a canopy height model, and raster files of estimated forest structural and compositional metrics at 100 m grid scale. (2) includes all response and explanatory variable values applied in inferential models. Response variables include conifer forest stand density, basal area, 95th percentile height, quadratic mean diameter, and others. Explanatory variables include climatic water deficit, actual evapotranspiration, elevation, heat load, soil available water content, and others. (3) includes results of training and testing several individual tree detection (ITD) algorithms, as well as inferential modeling results. (4) is a PDF user guide for this data package, including detailed descriptions and data dictionaries for all files. The data package root contains 17 assets: 8 compressed tape archive (.tar.gz) files, 5 comma-separated values (.csv) files, 3 Geographic Tagged Image File Format (GeoTIFF) (.tif) files, and 1 Portable Document Format (.pdf) file. The compressed .tar.gz archives contain ESRI shapefiles (.shp) .tif, compressed LASer (.laz), and .csv files. The archives must first be decompressed using the widely distributed command-line software utility TAR. All other files, including constituent files within the .tar.gz archives, can be opened in the open-source R statistical computing environment. Alternatively, .csv files may also be read in any simple text editor software or Microsoft Excel. Geospatial files including .shp and .tif files can also be opened in GIS software, such as QGIS (open-source) or ESRI ArcGIS (proprietary). The .pdf Data User Guide can be read with Adobe Acrobat Reader or other compatible readers.

Radio and X-Ray Observations of the Luminous Fast Blue Optical Transient AT 2020xnd

We present deep X-ray and radio observations of the fast blue optical transient (FBOT) AT 2020xnd/ZTF 20acigmel at z = 0.2433 from 13 days to 269 days after explosion. AT 2020xnd belongs to the category of optically luminous FBOTs with similarities to the archetypal event AT 2018cow. AT 2020xnd shows luminous radio emission reaching L ν ≈ 8 × 10 29 erg s -1 Hz -1 at 20 GHz and 75 days post-explosion, accompanied by luminous and rapidly fading soft X-ray emission peaking at L X ≈ 6 × 10 42 erg s -1 . Interpreting the radio emission in the context of synchrotron radiation from the explosion's shock interaction with the environment, we find that AT 2020xnd launched a high-velocity outflow (v ~ 0.1c–0.2c) propagating into a dense circumstellar medium (effective $\dot{M}\approx {10}^{-3}\,{M}_{\odot }$ yr -1 for an assumed wind velocity of v w = 1000 km s -1 ). Similar to AT 2018cow, the detected X-ray emission is in excess compared to the extrapolated synchrotron spectrum and constitutes a different emission component, possibly powered by accretion onto a newly formed black hole or neutron star. These properties make AT 2020xnd a high-redshift analog to AT 2018cow, and establish AT 2020xnd as the fourth member of the class of optically luminous FBOTs with luminous multiwavelength counterparts.

Current and future federal and state sampling guidance for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances in environmental matrices

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a class of emerging contaminants composed of an estimated 5000 to 10,000 human-made, fluorinated, organic chemicals. Due to the complexity of PFAS, the need for multiple environmental matrix considerations and the absence of a promulgated federal standard for environmental sampling and analysis, U.S. states have begun developing health-based regulatory and/or guidance values for a limited number of PFAS in environmental matrices. As there is a growing body of science to inform PFAS sampling guidance standard development, it is important to understand which U.S. states are implementing sampling guidelines and how they plan to handle emerging PFAS. This critical review discusses the current and impending federal and state sampling guidelines for PFAS in environmental matrices, the data gaps surrounding PFAS sampling guidance in U.S. states, and the future impacts of impending guidance documents and regulations. Ten federal guidance documents are available for PFAS sampling guidance and analysis. The maximum number of PFAS covered in these guidance documents is 25 analytes spanning across 8 unique media. While the EPA has developed several different sampling and analytical guidelines for PFAS, there is no formal regulation of PFAS or requirements of states to enforce these guidelines. Consequently, only 31 states have informally adopted sampling guidelines, while the other 19 states have no guidance documentation in place for PFAS. The introduction of new PFAS sampling guidelines by the EPA, as well as updated analytical guidelines that target more PFAS or total organofluoride, is expected to continuously shift the landscape of federal and state guidance for PFAS sampling moving forward.

Experimental Fuel Consumption Results from a Heterogeneous Four-Truck Platoon

Platooning has the potential to reduce greenhouse gas missions of heavy-duty vehicles. Prior platooning studies have chiefly focused on the fuel economy characteristics and three-truck platoons, and most have investigated aerodynamically homogeneous platoons with trucks of the same trim. For real world application and accurate return on investment for potential adopters, non-uniform platoons and the impacts of grade and disturbances on a platoon’s fuel economy must also be characterized. This study investigates the fuel economy of a heterogeneous four-truck platoon on a closed test track. Tests were run for one hour at a speed of 45 mph. The trucks used for this study are two 2015 Peterbilt 579’s with a Cummins ISX15 and a Paccar MX-13, and two 2009 Freightliner M915A5’s, one armored and the other unarmored. Many analysis methodologies were leveraged to describe and compare the fuel data, including lap-wise and track-segment analysis. The methodology for dividing the data into laps is described in detail. The influence of other factors beyond the aerodynamics of platooning is discussed. CAN fuel rate analysis showed excellent agreement with previous experimental trends for two and three-truck platoons. In general, the indicated fuel economy benefits in this study were 5-11% for following vehicles and 0-4% for the lead vehicle in platoon relative to their baseline fuel consumption. On a cumulative basis, all platoons saved fuel, ranging from 6% to 8% versus the sum of the standalone trucks’ fuel consumption. The practical implications of the fuel economy results are discussed, as well as avenues for future research. Introduction and Motivation platooning is controlled coordination of two or more vehicles in a convoy, sometimes called CACC (Coordinated or Cooperative Adaptive Cruise Control). The distance between vehicles in a platoon can be controlled tightly at no additional fatigue to the driver. Platooning vehicles can also respond quickly to braking events of the leader, much more quickly than the typical human driver’s reaction time of 1-1.5 s. Therefore, vehicles in a platoon can follow each other much more closely than would usually be considered a safe following distance under human operation. It is implied that under very close following conditions, platooning technology must be extremely robust before it is safe for wide-scale implementation. Platooning is under investigation as a fuel-saving technology. Close-following significantly reduces aerodynamic drag for both leading and trailing vehicles. According to the NRC in 2010, aerodynamic drag represents roughly half of a Class-8 truck’s on-highway fuel usage, meaning a 20% reduction in drag roughly equals a 10% reduction in fuel usage, if all other sources of energy loss remain equal (i.e. accessory, rolling resistance, drivetrain, braking). It is by aerodynamics that platooning saves fuel. At risk of oversimplifying the aerodynamics, following (or trailing) vehicles experience reduced wind velocity due to shielding, and the leading vehicles experience an increased aft pressure, especially at distances closer than 75’ (23 m).

White dwarf pollution by hydrated planetary remnants: hydrogen and metals in WD J204713.76–125908.9

ABSTRACT WD J204713.76–125908.9 is a new addition to the small class of white dwarfs with helium-dominated photospheres that exhibit strong Balmer absorption lines and atmospheric metal pollution. The exceptional abundances of hydrogen observed in these stars may be the result of accretion of water-rich rocky bodies. We obtained far-ultraviolet and optical spectroscopy of WD J204713.76–125908.9 using the Cosmic Origin Spectrograph on-board the Hubble Space Telescope and X-shooter on the Very Large Telescope, and identify photospheric absorption lines of nine metals: C, O, Mg, Si, P, S, Ca, Fe, and Ni. The abundance ratios are consistent with the steady-state accretion of exo-planetesimal debris rich in the volatile elements carbon and oxygen, and the transitional element sulphur, by factors of 17, 2, and 4, respectively, compared to the bulk Earth. The parent body has a composition akin to Solar system carbonaceous chondrites, and the inferred minimum mass, 1.6 × 1020 g, is comparable to an asteroid 23 km in radius. We model the composition of the disrupted parent body, finding from our simulations a median water mass fraction of 8 per cent.

Proton spin from small-x with constraints from the valence quark model

We apply the valence quark model [1] to constrain the non-perturbative initial condition for the small-x helicity evolution. The remaining free parameters are constrained by performing a global analysis akin to [2] to the available polarized small-x deep inelastic scattering data. A good description of the world data is obtained with only 8 free parameters. The model parameters are tightly constrained by the data, allowing us to predict the proton polarized structure function $g^p_1$ to be negative at small x. Furthermore, we obtain the small-x quark and gluon spins to give a contribution $\int^{0.1}_{10^{-5}} dx (\frac{1}{2}\Delta\Sigma + \Delta{G}) = 0.63 ± 0.10$ or $1.35 ± 0.16$ (or to the proton spin, depending on the applied running coupling prescription.

Uptake and elimination of 137Cs in aquatic biota inhabiting a contaminated effluent canal

Radiocesium (137Cs) is among the most prevalent and concerning radionuclide released from anthropogenic activities due to its relatively slow decay time and high bioavailability. Numerous studies have reported activity concentrations of 137Cs in exposed biota, but few have assessed detailed toxicokinetics. The objective of our study was to quantify and compare the uptake and elimination of 137Cs in aquatic taxa from multiple classes with different ecological roles inhabiting a canal contaminated from nuclear production activities on the Savannah River Site in South Carolina, USA. We tracked accumulation and elimination of 137Cs in four understudied aquatic species: one aquatic macrophyte [American white water lily (Nymphae odorata), two benthic associated omnivorous species (American bullfrog (Lithobates catesbeianus) and red swamp crayfish (Procambarus clarkii), and one pelagic carnivorous fish (Eastern mosquitofish (Gambusia holbrooki)]. We monitored accumulation of 137Cs from initial exposure until equilibrium for biota restricted within the canal and subsequently tracked elimination of 137Cs over time by moving organisms from the canal to a nearby reference pond. Results indicated bullfrog tadpoles reached 95 % equilibrium in approximately 9 days, the fastest among the species evaluated. After bullfrog tadpoles, the next fastest time to equilibrium was achieved by red swamp crayfish (51 days) followed by mosquitofish (86 days). At equilibrium, bullfrog tadpoles were found to have similar 137Cs activity concentrations to mosquitofish (3.16 and 3.57 Bq/g, respectively), and both were significantly higher than red swamp crayfish (1.77 Bq/g). For elimination, we found biological half-lives to range between 8 and 43 days with bullfrog tadpoles eliminating 137Cs the fastest followed by water lilies, mosquitofish, and red swamp crayfish. Overall, we found the uptake and elimination of 137Cs to vary widely among our studied species, but benthic organisms are not at an increased risk to accumulate 137Cs compared to organisms in less frequent contact with the sediment.

PolyDODT: a macrocyclic elastomer with unusual properties

The effect of reaction conditions on the structure of poly(3,6-dioxa-1,8-octanedithiol) (polyDODT) made by Reversible Radical Recombination Polymerization (R3P) using triethylamine (TEA), H 2 O 2 and air was investigated. 800 MHz (1 and 2D) NMR was used to investigate the polymer structures. Sensitivity analysis provided direct evidence for high purity cyclic polyDODT up to M n ~ 100 000 g mol –1 . Here, comparative analysis by High Resolution Multidetector Size Exclusion Chromatography (SEC) using integrated data showed that the cycles had lower viscosity and were more compact (both for R g and R h ) than linear samples of similar molecular weight. However, differential data revealed unusual behavior. While lower molecular weight cyclic polymers eluted later and had lower intrinsic viscosity than their linear counterparts at the same molecular weight, at higher molecular weights the polymers showed strange behavior: both the diffusion coefficient measured by Quasielastic Light Scattering (QELS) and Mark–Houwink–Sakurada plots of intrinsic viscosity for linear and cyclic polyDODT were found to converge. R3P, an aqueous based “green” method is capable of producing polymers at the 10–100 g scale in the lab, which will allow more detailed studies of this new class of biodegradable elastomers so further experimentation can be performed to elucidate the reasons for the unusual findings.

Constraints on dark matter to dark radiation conversion in the late universe with DES-Y1 and external data

We study a phenomenological class of models where dark matter converts to dark radiation in the low redshift epoch. This class of models, dubbed DMDR, characterizes the evolution of comoving dark-matter density with two extra parameters, and may be able to help alleviate the observed discrepancies between early and late-time probes of the Universe. We investigate how the conversion affects key cosmological observables such as the cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature and matter power spectra. Combining 3x2pt data from Year 1 of the Dark Energy Survey, Planck-2018 CMB temperature and polarization data, supernovae (SN) Type Ia data from Pantheon, and baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) data from BOSS DR12, MGS and 6dFGS, we place new constraints on the amount of dark matter that has converted to dark radiation and the rate of this conversion. The fraction of the dark matter that has converted since the beginning of the Universe in units of the current amount of dark matter, ζ, is constrained at 68% confidence level to be <0.32 for DES-Y1 3x2pt data, <0.030 for CMB+SN+BAO data, and <0.037 for the combined dataset. The probability that the DES and CMB+SN+BAO datasets are concordant increases from 4% for the ΛCDM model to 8% (less tension) for DMDR. The tension in S8=σ8Ωm/0.3 between DES-Y1 3x2pt and CMB+SN+BAO is slightly reduced from 2.3σ to 1.9σ. We find no reduction in the Hubble tension when the combined data is compared to distance-ladder measurements in the DMDR model. The maximum-posterior goodness-of-fit statistics of DMDR and ΛCDM model are comparable, indicating no preference for the DMDR cosmology over ΛCDM.
