Conjugate point determination for multitemporal data overlay

The machine processing is discussed of spatially variant multitemporal data such as imagery obtained at different times which requires that these data be in geometrical registration so that the analysis processor may obtain the datum for a specified ground resolution element in each of the sets of imagery being utilized for analysis. Misregistration between corresponding subsets of imagery contains both a displacement and a geometrical distortion component. Search techniques utilizing the moduli of the Fourier Transforms are developed for estimating the coefficients of geometrical distortion components of this model. Following the correction of these distortion components, the displacement is located by the crosscorrelation of a template obtained from one set of data, termed the reference, with the second, or background data. This template, derived for the optimum discrimination of the reference data embedded in the background, is determined by the solution of a system of equations involving the reference data and the covariance matrix of these data.

Observations of the conjugate SAR arcs of September 28-30, 1967

Stable subauroral red arcs (SAR arcs) were observed in both the northern and southern hemispheres on Sept. 28 to 30, 1967. For each pass the universal time and the longitude of the spacecraft as it crossed the magnetic equator are given. The SAR arc was noted to be worldwide in its extent and located on the same L shell in the northern and southern hemispheres. It appeared near L equals 3, moved equatorward to L equals 2.4, and later moved to, or reformed, near L equals 2.9. Its intensities were variable over the nearly two days of observations and, apparently influenced by the composition of the lower thermosphere, averaged 60 per cent greater in the northern hemisphere.

Estimate of conjugate gamma and gamma prime compositions in Ni-base superalloys

Approaches for estimating the composition of the matrix phase of alloys from the melt composition are reviewed. The first method is based on assigning essentially fixed stoichiometry to precipitating phases and is typified by PHACOMP. The second method uses analytical geometry to interpret phase diagrams and is applicable to a two-phase region of a six-component Ni-base system. The geometric method is also applicable to commercial Ni-base superalloys.

Estimation of conjugate gamma and gamma-prime compositions in Ni-base superalloys

To control the formation of unwanted phases, superalloy metallurgists have developed methods of estimating the composition of the matrix phase of alloys. That composition is then used to estimate the alloy's propensity toward sigma and other unwanted phase formations upon prolonged exposure to elevated temperatures in service. This paper reviews two approaches for estimating phase composition from the melt composition. One method is based on assigning essentially fixed stoichiometry to precipitating phases and is typified by 'PHACOMP'. The second method uses analytical geometry to interpret phase diagrams and is shown to be applicable to a two-phase region of a six-component Ni-base system. The geometric method is also shown to be applicable to commercial Ni-base superalloys.

Artificial aurora conjugate to a rocket-borne electron accelerator

An accelerator intended to send electron beams upward along an L = 1.24 magnetic field line was flown from a rocket launched from Kauai, Hawaii, on October 15, 1972. Though the intent was to produce several hundred observable auroral streaks in the Southern Hemisphere, imaging instruments operated there aboard jet aircraft detected only a single aurora. Produced by a 0.155-A beam of energy 22.8 keV, the aurora was of expected brightness and had a diameter (210 + or - 50 m) somewhat larger than expected and an altitude (top 116 + or - 2 km; bottom 92 + or - 2 km) higher than expected.

Conjugated heat transfer in a laminar boundary layer with heat source at the wall

This work presents the solution of the temperature field in a two-dimensional laminar incompressible flow over a conducting solid plate with a line heat source located at the fluid-solid interface perpendicular to the flow direction. A numerical scheme was used to obtain the temperature profiles as a function of the source strength, and of the properties of the fluid and the solid. The heat conduction and forced convection in the fluid and the heat conduction in the solid were solved for the case of moderate temperature rise, where the assumption of constant properties applies. The model enables the improvement of an instrument for the detection of boundary layer separation. It was found that for the actual parameters of the separation detector, a distance of 4 to 24 mm between the sensors gives an indication of 70 percent of the maximum temperature difference.

Nonlinear susceptibilities of finite conjugated organic polymers

Tight-binding calculations of the length dependence of the third-order molecular hyperpolarizability for polyenes and polyynes are reported. The pi-electron wave functions were determined by exploiting the limited translational symmetry of the molecules. Perturbation theory was used to calculate the longitudinal component of the electronic nonresonant hyperpolarizability. This is the first two-'band' calculation of third-order hyperpolarizabilities on finite pi-electron systems of varying length. In contrast to the results of the one-'band' models, the hyperpolarizability densities increase rapidly and then, after about 10-15 repeating units, approach an asymptotic value.

Comparison results for ignition in conjugate systems

The exothermic reaction of an arbitrarily shaped solid in a well-mixed continuous flow of constant density and velocity is investigated analytically, with a focus on a zeroth-order reaction in a pellet. Comparison theorems for the basic problem and the eigenvalue problem of ignition are derived, and the domain dependence of the bifurcation point is explored using the method of Joseph (1976). Some typical analytical results are presented in tables and compared with published values obtained using numerical methods.

Conjugating binary systems for spacecraft thermal control. Appendix C: Aeroassist Flight Experiment Carrier Vehicle preliminary stress analysis

An assessment of the static strength of the Aeroassist Flight Experiment (AFE) Carrier Vehicle is presented. The Carrier Vehicle is the structural component which provides the mounting platform for the experiments, on-board computers, batteries, and other black boxes. In addition, the Solid Rocket Motor (SRM), the Thrusters, and the Aerobrake are all attached directly to the Carrier Vehicle. The basic approach in this analysis was to develop a NASTRAN Finite Element Model as a parallel effort to the preliminary design, and to use the internal loads from this model to perform the stress analysis. The NASTRAN method of Inertial Relief was employed. This method involves either specifying a set of CG (center of gravity) accelerations or applying forces at the CG and representing the Carrier Vehicle and all its mounted devices with the proper stiffness and mass properties.

Auroral E-fields from DE-1 and -2 at magnetically conjugate points

The results of studies of the electric field measurements from the two Dynamics Explorer satellites are reviewed. There are times at which DE-2 measured electric fields at the auroral ionosphere while DE-1 obtained nearly simultaneous measurement at a higher altitude on the same magnetic field lines. When these electric fields are mapped to a common altitude it is found that the large-scale electric fields are similar, but the small-scale electric fields have a larger amplitude at the higher altitude. Through the use of Fourier analysis it is shown that these results are evidence for a magnetic field-aligned potential drop between the two satellites. While these results were made possible by the satellites' altitude separation, it is also possible to take advantage of the fact that the satellites may pass through the same geomagnetic location with a time separation. This was useful for confirming that sinusoidal electric field oscillations which were detected near one conjunction were due to spatial rather than temporal variations, since similar oscillations were found at the same location at different times. The observed spatial oscillations can be explained by a simple model of magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling.

Strut-node joint conjugates for the assembly of semi-permanent or reusable truss structures

When strut and node components are used for truss construction an assembly problem occurs if a strut must be fitted between nodes whose separation distance is either closer or farther than the design intended. This condition is the result of normal dimensional variations that occur in any manufacturing process. In such circumstances two actions would permit continued assembly: change the effective strut length, and move the nodes. Assuming continued assembly is the most attractive alternative, attention is focused on accomplishing these actions as part of the assembly process.

Conjugate echoes of artificially injected electron beams detected optically by means of new image processing

Artificial auroral streaks were detected following two upward injections of energetic electrons (38 keV and 26 keV) from the Echo 4 rocket-borne electron accelerator. Newly developed image processing techniques are used to detect and describe the streaks. It is found that the potential of the payload remained below 1 kV during 45 mA injections at an altitude of 210 km. The echo streaks show little dispersion in time or space, suggesting that the portion of the beam returning to the northern hemisphere loss cone remained collimated and nearly monoenergetic. There was, however, a 70 percent loss in the return flux. The causes of this loss are discussed.
