Legacy Survey of Space and Time Data Preview 2: ss_source dataset type

We present Rubin Data Preview 2 (DP2), the second data preview from the NDF-DOE Vera C. Rubin Observatory. Data Preview 2 (DP2) comprises coadds, detection catalogs, and ancillary data products; and when fully released will also include single-epoch images and difference images. DP2 is derived from observations acquired by the LSST Science Camera (LSSTCam) on the Simonyi Survey Telescope at the Summit Facility on Cerro Pachón, Chile, primarily during the on-sky commissioning campaign between 2025-04-16 and 2025-09-21, supplemented by observations taken between 2025-10-25 and 2026-01-06 that overlap the commissioning footprint. The DP2 footprint comprises the Science Validation wide-area survey, five Deep Drilling Fields, and a number of targeted small-field regions, including Trifid and Lagoon, Prawn, M49, and New Horizons, all observed as part of the Rubin First Look campaign. Each field was imaged in up to six broad photometric bands, ugrizy, and coadded to produce deep imaging covering an estimated 3,000 deg2. The addition of single-visit-only areas expands the total DP2 footprint to an estimated 15,000 deg2, with coverage in at least one filter. The median per-visit PSF FWHM across the wide-area survey ranges from 1.17 arcsec in the z band to 1.26 arcsec in g and r bands. The deepest field, reaches estimated coadded 5σ depths of u=26 mag, g=26.8 mag, r=26.3 mag, i=26.1 mag, z=25.3 mag, y=23.9 mag. Based on a roughly five-month primary observing baseline and covering only part of the eventual LSST footprint, DP2's area, depth, and multiband coverage nonetheless support a broad range of early science investigations ahead of LSST Data Release This dataset is a subset of the full data release consisting of the ss_source dataset type. These are instantaneous physical parameters for moving objects at the time of every observation. This release contains 1 dataset of this type.

Estimating Electrification Potential for Class 8 Regional-Haul Trucks

This one-page highlight details the key takeaways from a project that utilized NREL's Fleet Research, Energy Data, and Insights (FleetREDI) data analysis pipeline. As part of the North American Council for Freight Efficiency's (NACFE's) Run on Less Depot data workshop, NREL sought to understand how Tesla semi-trucks would perform in real-world regional haul applications. Analysis reveals that the modeled Tesla trucks, with an average efficiency of 1.78 kWh/mi, struggle to achieve full operational coverage using current battery and charging configurations assuming operations remain unchanged. However, in an extreme case where ubiquitous charging exists, 100% EV coverage is possible for the given drive cycles. These findings highlight the trade-off between battery size and charge rate in electrification potential and emphasize the necessity for advancements in charging infrastructure to enable electric trucks for regional haul operations.

Beyond Point Estimates: Benchmarking Uncertainty Quantification Methods on the AION-1 Astronomical Foundation Model

Foundation models for astronomical surveys offer powerful learned representations that can be transferred to downstream regression tasks such as galaxy property estimation. However, point predictions alone are insufficient for scientific inference; reliable uncertainty quantification (UQ) is essential. We compare seven UQ methods on galaxy property regression using frozen AION-1 foundation-model embeddings, predicting redshift, stellar mass, stellar-population age, gas-phase metallicity, and specific star-formation rate, from Legacy Survey photometry/imaging and DESI spectra, with PROVABGS-derived labels. Distribution-free conformal methods achieve marginal coverage within $\sim$1 pp of the nominal 90% across all properties, while non-conformal baselines (Deep Ensembles, MC~Dropout) fail to calibrate reliably. Among conformal approaches, Conformalized Quantile Regression (CQR) delivers the best coverage in the bin with the poorest model predictions. More importantly, only the Locally Valid and Discriminative (LVD) framework -- particularly when operating on AION-1 embeddings -- also provides finite-sample \emph{local validity}, producing intervals that adapt to each galaxy's local prediction difficulty rather than relying on marginal guarantees alone. These results establish conformal prediction, and LVD in particular, as the preferred UQ framework for uncertainty-aware inference on foundation-model embeddings in astrophysics.

Component-based SHGC determination of BIPV glazing for product comparison

Building-integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) systems are intrinsically designed to generate electricity and to provide at least one building-related function. When BIPV modules act as glazing products in windows, skylights or curtain walls, their ability to control the transmission of solar energy into the building must be characterised by a Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) or g value (also known as Total Solar Energy Transmittance – TSET – or “solar factor”). For the comparison of BIPV glazing products consisting of one PV laminate and possibly further, conventional glazing layers separated by gas-filled cavities, the procedures documented in international standards for architectural glazing (e.g. ISO 9050 and EN 410) form a suitable starting point. Easily implemented modifications to these procedures are proposed to take both optical inhomogeneity (if relevant) and extraction of electricity from BIPV glazing units into account. Geometrically complex glazing and shading devices, and light-scattering glazing layers, are outside the scope of the proposed methodology; SHGC determination for obliquely incident solar radiation is also excluded. For these cases, the experimental calorimetric approach documented in [ISO 19467:2017; ISO 19467-2:2021] is recommended. The paper also presents results and conclusions from an implementation exercise and sensitivity study carried out by participants of the IEA-PVPS Task 15 on BIPV. The cell coverage ratio in the PV laminate, the thermal resistance offered by the glazing configuration, the choice of boundary conditions and the effect of extracting electricity were all identified as parameters which significantly affect the SHGC value determined for a given type of BIPV glazing. A practicable approach to accommodate the great variety of dimensions typical for BIPV glazing is also proposed. These findings should pave the way for modifying the existing component-based standards for architectural glazing to take the specific features of BIPV glazing into account.

CO–induced roughening of Cu(111): formation and detection of reactive nanoclusters on metal surfaces

The formation of nanoclusters on metal surfaces in the presence of reactive environments is a phenomenon with important implications for catalysis. These nanoclusters are composed of atoms ejected from undercoordinated sites such as step edges, and their presence alters the catalytic properties of solid materials. We perform density functional theory (DFT) and kinetic Monte Carlo (KMC) simulations to investigate the formation and reactivity of copper clusters on Cu(111). Our results indicate a considerably higher reactivity of small copper nanoclusters, with up to seven atoms in size on roughened copper surfaces than on pristine Cu(111) and Cu(211). Regarding the restructuring events that give rise to nanoclusters under CO atmospheres, we determine that the ejection of Cu atoms from step edges and their migration therefrom to adjacent Cu(111) terraces are, by and large, driven by CO coverage effects. By means of KMC simulations, which account for CO–CO lateral interactions and CO–induced surface restructuring, we show that temperature programmed desorption (TPD) holds promise for the detection of highly reactive nanoclusters. Furthermore, our approach showcases how surface restructuring and surface–adsorbate bond breaking can be combined when modeling surface reactions and contributes to the development of an advanced understanding of the nature of active site under reaction conditions.
