Networked Microgrid Energy Management Considering Ownership and Control Structures: A Comparison

With the growing deployment of microgrids, networked microgrids have emerged for their additional advantages of economy, reliability and resilience by coordinating the operation of multiple microgrids. As microgrids are operated with different ownership, objectives and functionalities, the formed networked microgrids show characteristics of mixed ownership, inconsistent objectives and various functionalities. To enable the coordinated operation of networked microgrids, three control structures, i.e., centralized, distributed and decentralized, have been constructed in the literature. However, the data sharing enabling these different paradigms and the resulted value propositions are not well defined, leading to poor resource management and resilience, etc. To solve this issue, a complete comparison of networked microgrid energy management under centralized, distributed and decentralized structures are performed. As a novel contribution, the required minimum data exchange of networked microgrid energy management under three control structures are identified, respectively. The value propositions are calculated and compared against each other by the results of case studies.

Rb-Sr and Sm-Nd systematics of cherts and other siliceous deposits

An analysis of marine and lacustrine cherts demonstrates that Rb-Sr and Sm-Nd systems may be used in elucidating the origin and evolution of cherts, and that the Rb-Sr system may be used for dating. All samples have high Rb/Sr ratios, and though the site of these elements in cherts was not established, they appear to be correlated with Al content. Sm/Nd ratios were typical of continental sources, and the results show the Rb-Sr system in cherts to be isolated from the associated carbonate, with little Sr exchange. Data suggest that in many cases cherts are formed by dissolved SiO2 nucleating on clay-like material which preserves the isotropic characteristics of the detrital source, while in some cases it is possible that cherts were formed from silica-saturated waters from a nonmarine source.

Iterative finite element solver on transputer networks

The parallelism inherent in the Conjugate Gradient method is described. The initial results of a parallel implementation on a network of twelve transputers are discussed. The high efficiencies obtained indicate that significant speedup can be obtained with larger transputer arrays if communication overhead can be kept low. To this end, a method of communication that allows large, dynamically reconfigurable transputer arrays to exchange data in log sub 4 N steps for N processors is suggested.

Initial operating capability for the hypercluster parallel-processing test bed

The NASA Lewis Research Center is investigating the benefits of parallel processing to applications in computational fluid and structural mechanics. To aid this investigation, NASA Lewis is developing the Hypercluster, a multi-architecture, parallel-processing test bed. The initial operating capability (IOC) being developed for the Hypercluster is described. The IOC will provide a user with a programming/operating environment that is interactive, responsive, and easy to use. The IOC effort includes the development of the Hypercluster Operating System (HYCLOPS). HYCLOPS runs in conjunction with a vendor-supplied disk operating system on a Front-End Processor (FEP) to provide interactive, run-time operations such as program loading, execution, memory editing, and data retrieval. Run-time libraries, that augment the FEP FORTRAN libraries, are being developed to support parallel and vector processing on the Hypercluster. Special utilities are being provided to enable passage of information about application programs and their mapping to the operating system. Communications between the FEP and the Hypercluster are being handled by dedicated processors, each running a Message-Passing Kernel, (MPK). A shared-memory interface allows rapid data exchange between HYCLOPS and the communications processors. Input/output handlers are built into the HYCLOPS-MPK interface, eliminating the need for the user to supply separate I/O support programs on the FEP.
