Double-copy towards supergravity inflation with α-attractor models

A bstract Key to the simplicity of supergravity α -attractor models of inflation are Volkov-Akulov fermions, often in the form of nilpotent superfields. Here we explore the possibility of using the double-copy to construct theories of Dirac-Born-Infeld-Volkov-Akulov (DBIVA) coupled to supergravity. A color-dual bootstrap admits scattering amplitudes involving pions and vectors through five-point tree-level order by order in mass-dimension, but requires the introduction of a Tr( F 3 ) operator. Gauge theories with this operator were recently found to require a tower of higher-derivative operators to be compatible with the duality between color and kinematics. Adjoint-type double-copy construction at its most conservative seems to require the UV completion of DBIVA + pure Poincaré supergravity scattering amplitudes to a family of theories involving DBIVA-like particles coupled to Weyl-Einstein supergravity. We also point out an alternative solution to color-dual gauged pions that allows adjoint double-copy without a tower of higher derivative corrections but at the cost of exchange symmetry between scalars.

Dressed vs. pairwise states, and the geometric phase of monopoles and charges

We construct the Faddeev-Kulish dressed multiparticle states of electrically and magnetically charged particles, incorporating the effects of real and virtual soft photons. We calculate the properties of such dressed states under Lorentz transformations, and find that they can be identified with the pairwise multi-particle states that transform under the pairwise little group. The shifts in the dressing factors under Lorentz transformations are finite and have a simple geometric interpretation. Using the transformation properties of the dressed states we also present a novel, fully quantum field theoretic derivation of the geometric (Berry) phase obtained by an adiabatic rotation of the Dirac string, and also of the Dirac quantization condition. For half integer pairwise helicity, we show that these multiparticle states have flipped spin-statistics, reproducing the surprising fact that fermions can be made out of bosons.

Thermal mean-field theories

Several closely related ab initio thermal mean-field theories for fermions, both well-established and new ones, are compared with one another at the formalism level and numerically. The theories considered are Fermi–Dirac theory; thermal Hartree–Fock (HF) theory; two modifications of the thermal single-determinant and the first-order finite-temperature many-body perturbation theory based on a zero-temperature or thermal HF reference. Furthermore, thermal full-configuration-interaction theory is used as the benchmark.

Neutralizing topological obstructions to bubbles of nothing

Theories with compact extra dimensions can exhibit a vacuum instability known as a bubble of nothing. These decay modes can be obstructed if the internal manifold is stabilized by fluxes, or if it carries Wilson lines for background gauge fields, or if the instanton is incompatible with the spin structure. In each of these cases the decay can proceed by adding dynamical charged membranes or gauge fields. We give a general, bottom-up procedure for constructing approximate bubble of nothing solutions in models with internal spheres stabilized by flux and study the influence of the brane tension on the tunneling exponent, finding two branches of solutions that merge at a minimal superextremal value of the tension. In the case of Wilson operators and incompatible fermions, the relevant bubble is shown to be the Euclidean Reissner-Nordstrom black hole, and the ordinary decay exponent is modified by 1/g 2 effects. We examine the Dirac operator on this background and comment on the relevance for models of supergravity with gauged R-symmetry.

Order fractionalization in a Kitaev-Kondo model

We describe a mechanism for order fractionalization in a two-dimensional Kondo lattice model, in which electrons interact with a gapless spin liquid of Majorana fermions described by the Yao-Lee (YL) model. When the Kondo coupling to the conduction electrons exceeds a critical value, the model develops a superconducting instability into a state with a a spinor order parameter with charge 4 and spin ( = 1 2. The broken symmetry state develops a gapless Majorana Dirac cone in the bulk. By including an appropriate gauge string, we can show that the charge 4, spinorial order develops off-diagonal long range order that allows electrons to coherently tunnel arbitrarily long distances through the spin liquid.

Thermodynamic Evidence of Fermionic Behavior in the Vicinity of One-Ninth Plateau in a Kagome Antiferromagnet

The spin-1/2 kagome Heisenberg antiferromagnets are believed to host exotic quantum entangled states. Recently, the reports of 1/9 magnetization plateau and magnetic oscillations in a kagome antiferromagnet YCu 3 ⁢(OH) 6 ⁢Br 2 ⁢[Br 𝑥 ⁢(OH) 1−𝑥 ] (YCOB) have made this material a promising candidate for experimentally realizing quantum spin liquid states. Here, we present measurements of the specific heat 𝐶 𝑝 in YCOB in high magnetic fields (up to 41.5 T) down to 0.46 K, and the 1/9 plateau feature has been confirmed. Moreover, the temperature dependence of 𝐶 𝑝 /𝑇 in the vicinity of 1/9 plateau region can be fitted by a linear in 𝑇 term which indicates the presence of a Dirac spectrum, together with a constant term, which indicates a finite density of states contributed by other spinon Fermi surfaces. Surprisingly, the constant term is highly anisotropic in the direction of the magnetic field. Additionally, we observe a double-peak feature near 30 T above the 1/9 plateau which is another hallmark of fermionic excitations in the specific heat. This combination of gapless behavior and the double-peak structure strongly suggests that the 1/9 plateau in YCOB is nontrivial and hosts fermionic quasiparticles.

Magic-angle twisted symmetric trilayer graphene as a topological heavy-fermion problem

Recently, Song and Bernevig [Phys. Rev. Lett. 129, 047601 (2022)] reformulated magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene as a topological heavy fermion problem, and used this reformulation to provide a deeper understanding for the correlated phases at integer fillings. Here, in this work, we generalize this heavy-fermion paradigm to magic-angle twisted symmetric trilayer graphene, and propose a low-energy f–c–d model that reformulates magic-angle twisted symmetric trilayer graphene as heavy localized f modes coupled to itinerant topological semimetalic c modes and itinerant Dirac d modes. Our f–c–d model well reproduces the single-particle band structure of magic-angle twisted symmetric trilayer graphene at low energies for displacement field $\mathcal{E}$ ϵ [0,300]⁢ meV. By performing Hartree-Fock calculations with the f–c–d model for v = 0,–1,–2 electrons per Moiré unit cell, we reproduce all the correlated ground states obtained from the previous numerical Hartree-Fock calculations with the Bistritzer-MacDonald-type model, and we find additional new correlated ground states at high displacement field. Based on the numerical results, we propose a simple rule for the ground states at high displacement fields by using the f–c–d model, and provide analytical derivation for the rule at charge neutrality. We also provide analytical symmetry arguments for the (nearly) degenerate energies of the high-$\mathcal{E}$ ground states at all the integer fillings of interest, and make experimental predictions of which charge-neutral states are stabilized in magnetic fields. Our f–c–d model provides a new perspective for understanding the correlated phenomena in magic-angle twisted symmetric trilayer graphene, suggesting that the heavy fermion paradigm of Song and Bernevig [Phys. Rev. Lett. 129, 047601 (2022)] should be the generic underpinning of correlated physics in multilayer moire graphene structures.

Spin-Canting-Induced Band Reconstruction in the Dirac Material Ca 1 – x Na x MnBi 2

The ternary A MnBi 2 ( A is alkaline as well as rare-earth atom) materials provide an arena for investigating the interplay between low-dimensional magnetism of the antiferromagnetic MnBi layers and the electronic states in the intercalated Bi layers, which harbor relativistic fermions. We report on a comprehensive study of the optical properties and magnetic torque response of Ca 1–x Na x MnBi 2 . Our findings give evidence for a spin canting occurring at T s ~50–100 K. Thus, with the support of first-principles calculations we establish a direct link between the spin canting and the reconstruction of the electronic band structure, having immediate implications for the spectral weight reshuffling in the optical response, signaling a partial gapping of the Fermi surface, and the dc transport properties below T s .

Minimal dark 𝑆⁢𝑈⁡(2) origin of a massless Dirac neutrino

We propose a gauge-symmetry origin of a rank-two Dirac neutrino mass matrix that enforces one exactly massless neutrino, while being consistent with the oscillation data, as well as cosmological constraints. The mechanism relies on a minimal dark 𝑆⁢𝑈⁢(2) 𝐷 gauge symmetry under which one right-handed neutrinolike Weyl fermion is charged, thereby forbidding its Standard Model Yukawa coupling. Quantum consistency then fixes the minimal dark-sector completion: Cancellation of the Witten anomaly requires a second fermionic 𝑆⁢𝑈⁢(2) 𝐷 doublet, while a discrete 𝑍 4 symmetry that forbids Majorana masses allows the two dark doublets to form a vectorlike pair. This anomaly-free completion gives rise to a secluded, confining dark sector that can contain a potential dark matter candidate, linking the protected neutrino texture to dark infrared dynamics.

Interplay between strong correlations and electronic topology in the underlying kagome lattice of $\mathrm{Na_{2/3}CoO_2}$

Electronic topology in metallic kagome compounds is under intense scrutiny. We present transport experiments in $\mathrm{Na_{2/3}CoO_2}$ n which the Na order differentiates a Co kagome sublattice in the triangular CoO 2 layers. Hall and magnetoresistance (MR) data under high fields give evidence for the coexistence of light and heavy carriers. At low temperatures, the dominant light carrier conductivity at zero field is suppressed by a B-linear MR, suggesting Dirac-like quasiparticles. Lifshitz transitions induced at large B and T unveil the lower mobility carriers. They display a negative B 2 MR due to scattering from magnetic moments likely pertaining to a flat band. So, we emphasize an analogy with heavy fermion physics.

Quantum Anomalies in Condensed Matter

Quantum materials provide a fertile ground in which to test and realize unusual phenomena such as quantum anomalies predicted by quantum field theory. There are three important symmetries that are broken when classical field theory is moved into the quantum regime, the scale anomaly, the axial (chiral) anomaly, and the parity anomaly. Several potential device applications may be realized by the discovery of quantum anomalies in condensed matter, enabled by the new physics they embody, including ultra‐sensitive dark matter detectors, far infrared optical modulators, micro‐bolometric detectors, low‐dissipation ballistic transporters, terahertz‐based qubits, terahertz polarization state controls, passive magnetic field sensors, stable topological superconductors that host Majorana fermions, and qubits topologically protected against decoherence. In this perspective article, the definition of these quantum anomalies is laid out, how little is known in the context of condensed matter, and how quantum anomalies are predicted to manifest as anomalous electronic, thermal, and magnetic behavior in experiments on topological quantum materials, including Weyl and Dirac semimetals. Furthermore, the importance that mechanical strain and defects will play in modifying signatures of quantum anomalies is discussed.

Endless Dirac nodal lines in kagome-metal Ni3In2S2

Abstract Topological semimetals are a frontier of quantum materials. In multiband electronic systems, topological band crossings can form closed curves, known as nodal lines. In the presence of spin–orbit coupling and/or symmetry-breaking operations, topological nodal lines can break into Dirac/Weyl nodes and give rise to interesting transport properties, such as the chiral anomaly and giant anomalous Hall effect. Recently, the time-reversal symmetry-breaking induced Weyl fermions are observed in a kagome-metal Co 3 Sn 2 S 2 , triggering interests in nodal-line excitations in multiband kagome systems. Here, using first-principles calculations and symmetry-based indicator theories, we find six endless nodal lines along the stacking direction of kagome layers and two nodal rings in the kagome plane in nonmagnetic Ni 3 In 2 S 2 . The linear dipsersive electronic structure, confirmed by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, induces large magnetoresistance up to 2000% at 9 T. Our results establish a diverse topological landscape of multiband kagome metals.

Symmetry-Protected Moiré Band Engineering and Enhanced Electron–Phonon Coupling in Xe/Bi 2 Se 3 Superlattices: Path to Topological Superconductivity

Observation of superconductivity, magnetism, and correlated insulating phases driven by the moiré potential in twisted graphene bilayer has opened the exciting new field of “twistronics”. Even richer physics is expected if moiré superlattice could be generated on topological insulators; however, until now, experimental studies have been scarce. Here, we demonstrate topological moirés generated by adsorbing a monolayer of noble gas on a topological insulator. By angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we show that the moiré potential replicates the topological surface state and affects it in a way fundamentally different from the trivial states. Replicated Dirac cones generally avoid crossings, except at the time-reversal invariant momenta that remain gapless. This creates van Hove singularities at the moiré Brillouin zone corners, providing the mechanism of enhancing correlations. Indeed, we observe a strong enhancement of the electron–phonon coupling strength that, if properly tuned, might lead to topological superconductivity and Majorana Fermions.

Floquet Insulators and Lattice Fermions

Floquet insulators are periodically driven quantum systems that can host novel topological phases as a function of the drive parameters. These new phases exhibit features reminiscent of fermion doubling in discrete-time lattice fermion theories. We make this suggestion concrete by mapping the spectrum of a noninteracting (1+1)D Floquet insulator for certain drive parameters onto that of a discrete-time lattice fermion theory with a time-independent Hamiltonian. The resulting Hamiltonian is distinct from the Floquet Hamiltonian that generates stroboscopic dynamics. Finally, it can take the form of a discrete-time Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model with half the number of spatial sites of the original model, or of a (1+1)D Wilson-Dirac theory with one quarter of the spatial sites.

Symmetry-Based Classification of Exact Flat Bands in Single and Bilayer Moiré Systems

Landau levels have been central to the discovery of exotic quantum phases and their unprecedentedly deep roots in geometry and topology. A powerful concept called “vortexability” extends this framework to moiré systems. In this Letter, we show that vortexable systems support not only Landau-level-like flat bands but also entirely new types with distinct topological properties. Notably, while 𝑛𝑏 Landau levels have total Chern number 𝐶 = 𝑛 𝑏 , vortexable moiré systems can host 𝑛 𝑏 flat bands with 𝐶 = 1 ≠ 𝑛 𝑏 . Here, we provide a complete classification of such exact flat bands in single and bilayer systems with Dirac or quadratic band crossings, identifying the symmetry conditions that govern their number and topology. Up to six flat bands can be symmetry protected. We construct explicit wave functions, showing that sublattice-polarized states always sum to Chern number ±1 and satisfy ideal non-Abelian quantum geometry. When the Berry curvature is sharply peaked, we show that a topological heavy-fermion description remains valid—even for bands with high degeneracy.

Testing the Froggatt-Nielsen mechanism with lepton flavor and number violating processes

The Froggatt-Nielsen (FN) mechanism offers an elegant explanation for the observed masses and mixings of Standard Model fermions. In this work, we systematically study FN models in the lepton sector, identifying a broad range of charge assignments (“textures”) that naturally yield viable masses and mixings for various neutrino mass generation mechanisms. Using these textures, we consider higher-dimensional operators consistent with a FN origin and find that natural realizations predict distinct patterns in lepton flavor- and number-violating observables. For Dirac and Majorana neutrinos, FN-related correlations can lead to detectable rates of charged lepton flavor violation at next-generation low-energy experiments. Majorana and type-I seesaw models predict measurable rates of neutrinoless double beta decay. Determination of inverted neutrino mass ordering would exclude the Dirac neutrino FN scenario. Only a small minority of purely leptonic FN models predict detectable flavor violation at future muon colliders, though it is possible that a combined analysis with the quark sector will reveal motivated signals. These findings highlight the power of the FN mechanism to link neutrino mass generation to testable leptonic observables, offering new pathways for the experimental exploration of lepton number and underscoring the importance of next-generation low-energy probes.

Possible topological superconductivity in the topological crystalline insulator $\mathrm{(Pb_{1-x} Sn_x)_{1-y}In_yTe}$

Superconductivity in topological insulators is expected to show very unconventional features such as a $p+ip$ order parameter, Majorana fermions, etc. However, intrinsic superconductivity has been observed in a very limited number of materials in which the pairing symmetry is still a matter of debate. Here, we study the topological crystalline insulator (TCI) $\mathrm{(Pb_{1-x} Sn_x)_{1-y}In_yTe}$, for which a peculiar insulator to superconductor transition was previously reported near the gap inversion transition, where the system is nearly a three-dimensional Dirac semimetal. Both the existence of superconductivity near the three-dimensional Dirac semimetal and the occurrence of an insulator to superconductor transition in an isotropic material are highly unusual. We suggest that the observed phenomena are related to the intrinsic instability of a three-dimensional Dirac semimetal state in $\mathrm{(Pb_{1-x} Sn_x)_{1-y}In_yTe}$ and “flattening” of the bulk valence and conduction bands as they acquire a Mexican-hat-like dispersion on the inverted side of the phase diagram. Importantly, this favors the pairing instability if the chemical potential is pinned to these flat regions.
