Spectrophotometric variability in the Be star Gamma Cassiopeiae - Simultaneous ultraviolet and H-alpha observations

Simultaneous scans of the ultraviolet Si IV and Mg II resonance doublets in the spectrum of Gamma Cas with the Copernicus satellite during 64 continuous hours of observation, and H-alpha scans from a ground station, are described. No evidence is found for a rotation period of Gamma Cas, but narrow emission components in both ultraviolet doublets are reported along with a sudden emission increase on January 29.1, 1977 UT which appeared to be present in both H-alpha and the ultraviolet lines.

An improved higher order panel method for linearized supersonic flow

An improved higher order panel method for linearized supersonic flow is described. Each panel, defined by four points on the surface, is divided into eight subpanels in such a way that all subpanel and panel edges are contiguous. By prescribing a quadratic distribution of the doublet on each subpanel, the doublet strength is made strictly continuous on the paneled surface. A linear source distribution is also used. Numerical results are smoother and in better agreement with experiment than the previous method with less strict continuity. A brief discussion of superinclined panels used to eliminate interior interference in nacelles is included.

Dynamic loads analysis system (DYLOFLEX) summary. Volume 1: Engineering formulation

The DYLOFLEX computer program system expands the aeroelastic cycle from that in the FLEXSTAB computer program system to include dynamic loads analyses involving active controls. Two aerodynamic options exist within DYLOFLEX. The analyst can formulate the problem with unsteady aerodynamics calculated using the doublet lattice method or with quasi-steady aerodynamics formulated from either FLEXSTAB or doublet lattice steady state aerodynamics with unsteady effects approximated by indicial lift growth functions. The equations of motion are formulated assuming straight and level flight and small motions. Loads are calculated using the force summation technique. DYLOFLEX consists of nine standalone programs which can be linked with each other by magnetic files used to transmit the required data between programs.

An advanced panel method for analysis of arbitrary configurations in unsteady subsonic flow

An advanced method is presented for solving the linear integral equations for subsonic unsteady flow in three dimensions. The method is applicable to flows about arbitrary, nonplanar boundary surfaces undergoing small amplitude harmonic oscillations about their steady mean locations. The problem is formulated with a wake model wherein unsteady vorticity can be convected by the steady mean component of flow. The geometric location of the unsteady source and doublet distributions can be located on the actual surfaces of thick bodies in their steady mean locations. The method is an outgrowth of a recently developed steady flow panel method and employs the linear source and quadratic doublet splines of that method.

IUE observations of long period eclipsing binaries - A study of accretion onto non-degenerate stars

IUE observations made in 1978-1979 recorded a whole class of interacting long-period binaries similar to beta Lyrae, which includes RX Cas, SX Cas, V 367 Cyg, W Cru, beta Lyr, and W Ser, called the W Serpentis stars. These mass-transferring binaries with relatively high mass transfer rate show two prominent features in the far ultraviolet: a continuum with a color temperature higher than the one observed in the optical region (about 12,000 K), and a strong emission line spectrum with the N V doublet at 1240 A, C IV doublet at 1550 A and lines of Si II, Si III, Si IV, C II, Fe III, AI III, etc. These phenomena are discussed on the assumption that they are due to accretion onto non-degenerate stars.

IUE spectra of RS Puppis and HD 20722 - Stars in symmetric dusty nebulae

Spectra obtained by the IUE satellite of the Cepheid variable RS Puppis and the K giant HD 20722, both of which are surrounded by symmetric nebula, are presented. Exposures were made in 1980 with the long wavelength redundant camera and 10 x 20 arcmin focal plane aperture at a spatial resolution of about 5 arcsec and spectral resolution about 6 A. No anomalies are found in the low-dispersion spectra of the stars with nebula with respect to those of apparently similar stars that lack nebulae. It is pointed out, however, that high-resolution studies of the Mg II doublet are still warranted since the doublet profile, which is unresolved in the present studies, is a sensitive indicator of mass loss effects.

A survey of interstellar neutral potassium. I - Abundances and physical conditions in clouds toward 188 early-type stars

Observations of interstellar absorption in the resonance doublet 7664, 7698 A of neutral potassium toward 188 early-type stars at a spectral resolution of 8 km/s are reported. The 7664 A line is successfully separated from nearly coincident telluric O2 absorption for all but a few of the 165 stars for which K I absorption is detected, making possible an abundance analysis by the doublet ratio method. The relationships between the potassium abundances and other atomic abundances, the abundance of molecular hydrogen, and interstellar reddening are investigated.

Helicopter rotor loads using discretized matched asymptotic expansions

The numerical practicality of a matched asymptotic expansion approach for the computation of unsteady three dimensional airloads on a helicopter rotor was improved. This effort utilizes a discretized repesentation of the doublet strength distribution and helical streamlines to decrease the computational requirements of the original analysis. The continuous variation of the doublet strength was approximated by piecewise constant or piecewise quadratic distributions, and the helical trajectory of a fluid particle was approximated by connected straight line segments. As a direct result of these simplified representations the computational time required for the execution of a typical flight condition was reduced by an order of magnitude with respect to the requirements of the original analysis. Airloads which were computed using the discretized method for a two bladed model rotor and a full scale four bladed rotor are in close agreement with measured results and airloads from the original asymptotic analysis. For conditions characterized by significant rotor/wake interaction the piecewise constant representation requires a reduced azimuth spacing to maintain acceptable accuracy.

A multiple beam antenna concept for a 30/20 GHz satellite communications system

Design and operational performance features of a NASA planned 30/30 GHz flight experiment communications system multiple-beam antenna (MBA) are described. The MBA is a shared aperture offset Cassegrain type with a main reflector diameter of 3 m and physically separated transmit and receive feeds. A planar frequency selective surface is employed which is transmissive to the receive signals and reflective to the transmit signals. Trade-offs and constraints in the MBA feed design are explored, noting the higher feed loss and complexity due to choosing variable power dividers for the beam forming network. Doublet beam coverage of the east coast of the continental U.S. is shown to be possible with a triangular lattice array of feed horns with aperture diameters and element spacings of two wavelengths. The doublet configuration requires ten times the components as a singlet array.

Design and tolerance analysis of two null corrector designs for the Space Telescope fine guidance aspheric collimating mirror

The collimating mirror within the Fine Guidance Subsystem of the Space Telescope's Pointing Control System is aspherized in order to correct the pupil aberration. A null corrector is needed to test the collimating mirror in autocollimation. Triplet and doublet null corrector designs are subjected to tolerance sensitivity analyses, and the doublet design is chosen despite its more restricted tolerances because of its compactness and simplicity.

Profiles and intensity ratios of the C IV lambda 1548, 1550 emission lines in planetary nebulae

The C IV resonance doublet at lambda 1548, 1550 is an important diagnostic tool in the study of planetary nebulae. The predicted theoretical intensity ratio of 2:1 is, however, rarely observed in the high dispersion IUE spectrograms. Values of 0.8-2.0 are observed for a sampling of 11 planetary nebulae of various excitation classes and for three proto-planetary nebulae. A diversity of line profiles is observed. In addition to the C IV doublet, weak subsidiary lines are seen. The spacing between these pseudo-lines happens to correspond to the separation of the C IV lines but are believed to be due to hot pixels and do not conform to the radial velocity displacement of the C IV lines.

Forbidden O II studies of galactic planetary nebulae and extragalactic H II complexes

The 3727-A doublet ratio of forbidden O II was observed in five planetary nebulae and nine extragalactic groupings of H II regions (H II Complexes). The theoretical relation between this doublet ratio and nebular density was rederived using the most up-to-date atomic parameters, permitting columnar densities to be determined for all objects. The structure of extragalactic H II Complexes is discussed, and a preferred model advanced. A new method of distance determination for extragalactic systems is proposed and evaluated in the context of the presently available data.

Lunar luminescence and the filling-in of Fraunhofer lines in moonlight

The filling-in of Fraunhofer lines in moonlight has been attributed to lunar luminescence. In order to test mechanisms proposed for this effect, measurements were made of the filling-in of the H-alpha line, the Na D doublet, and a number of lines near the doublet. The degree of filling-in was not correlated with wavelength in a way expected from a broadband luminescence, such as thermoluminescence. However, it was correlated with equivalent width of the Fraunhofer line, such that it increased as equivalent width decreased. This suggests that the Fraunhofer line filling at the moon's surface is caused by inelastic scattering of sunlight with a small wavelength shift, as for example, photon-phonon scattering.

Moessbauer studies on LaNi(4.7)Sn(0.3) and its hydride

Moessbauer measurements were made on LaNi(4.7)Sn(0.3) at room and liquid nitrogen temperatures. Experimental data yielded a singlet at room temperature and a doublet at liquid-nitrogen temperature. Spectra of the hydrided sample yielded a doublet at liquid-nitrogen temperature with an increase in the quadrupole splitting compared to the unhydrided spectra, but no change in the isomer shift. These data indicate that there is no significant interaction between the tin and the hydrogen. The magnetic character remained the same down to liquid-nitrogen temperature as evidenced by the Moessbauer data. X-ray diffraction measurements on the hydride showed an expanded lattice with the same structure as found for the unhydrided sample. A decrease in particle size was observed upon hydriding.

High-dispersion ultraviolet spectra of the peculiar star RX Puppis

High spectral resolution observations of the peculiar star RX Puppis obtained with the International Ultraviolet Explorer suggest the presence of a complex gaseous ring system which surrounds an accreting hot secondary. The anomalous line intensity ratio of the C IV 1548, 1550 A doublet during the observations exceeded the optically thick limit, implying the presence of a high-velocity wind. Additionally, the C IV doublet exhibits about four or five narrow emission components, which are redshifted up to velocities of at least about + 300 km/s (with respect to the rest wavelength).

The analysis of ensembles of moderately saturated interstellar lines

It is shown that the combined equivalent widths for a large population of Gaussian-like interstellar line components, each with different central optical depths tau(0) and velocity dispersions b, exhibit a curve of growth (COG) which closely mimics that of a single, pure Gaussian distribution in velocity. Two parametric distributions functions for the line populations are considered: a bivariate Gaussian for tau(0) and b and a power law distribution for tau(0) combined with a Gaussian dispersion for b. First, COGs for populations having an extremely large number of nonoverlapping components are derived, and the implications are shown by focusing on the doublet-ratio analysis for a pair of lines whose f-values differ by a factor of two. The consequences of having, instead of an almost infinite number of lines, a relatively small collection of components added together for each member of a doublet are examined. The theory of how the equivalent widths grow for populations of overlapping Gaussian profiles is developed. Examples of the composite COG analysis applied to existing collections of high-resolution interstellar line data are presented.

Proposed input for determining longitudinal aerodynamic parameters for the space shuttle

A control input form to improve the identification of longitudinal aerodynamic parameters for the Space Shuttle, especially at low Mach numbers, has been proposed. This input combines features of several inputs currently used with the Shuttle to improve the response in angle-of-attack without exceeding pitch rate limits. The responses of the proposed input were generated using a simple three-degree-of-freedom simulation. An examination of the power spectral densities of these responses showed them to have more power near the vehicle natural frequency than doublet inputs previously used with the Shuttle. When the responses to the proposed input were corrupted with noise and processed using a maximum likelihood parameter extraction program, the identifiability of the parameters was improved over the identifiability of the same parameters using actual Shuttle responses from doublet input of a similar magnitude. This preliminary study indicates that the proposed input form should result in improved identifiability of longitudinal static and control parameters for the Shuttle vehicle.

Collisional quenching of cometary emission in the 18 centimeter OH transitions

A model of collisional quenching of the OH 2Pi(3/2) J = 3/2 Lambda doublet in cometary comae is presented. It is found that collisions with ions and electrons in the outer coma have a strong quenching effect on the Swings-effect inversion of the Lambda doublet that is responsible for the OH radio emission at 18 cm wavelength. For the conditions of Halley's comet, collisional quenching should lead radio observers to systematically underestimate the OH parent production rate by a factor of approximately 3 relative to its actual value, and in general, radio-derived production rates should always be less than or equal to UV-derived production rates, which are relatively unaffected by this process. The observation that UV production rates exceed those derived by radio techniques is well known; the direct measurement of this ratio, using a consistent coma model, should provide information about the ion and electron content of the cometary coma.
