GeoStorm Beacon Design Reference Mission (DRM) and Technology Drivers

A Design Reference Mission (DRM) for a NOAA Space Weather monitoring platform that provides warning times greater than 20 minutes with a 10-year operational timeline is presented. The summary of the DRM includes technology drivers for a subscale flight demonstration to reduce risk for the operational mission.

Binary Orbits as the Driver of Gamma-Ray Emission and Mass Ejection in Classical Novae

Classical novae are the most common astrophysical thermonuclear explosions, occurring on the surfaces of white dwarf stars accreting gas from companions in binary star systems. Novae typically expel about 10 (sup -4) solar masses of material at velocities exceeding 1,000 kilometers per second. However, the mechanism of mass ejection in novae is poorly understood, and could be dominated by the impulsive flash of thermonuclear energy, prolonged optically thick winds or binary interaction with the nova envelope. Classical novae are now routinely detected at giga-electronvolt gamma-ray wavelengths, suggesting that relativistic particles are accelerated by strong shocks in the ejecta. Here we report high-resolution radio imaging of the gamma-ray-emitting nova V959 Mon. We find that its ejecta were shaped by the motion of the binary system: some gas was expelled rapidly along the poles as a wind from the white dwarf, while denser material drifted out along the equatorial plane, propelled by orbital motion..At the interface between the equatorial and polar regions, we observe synchrotron emission indicative of shocks and relativistic particle acceleration, thereby pinpointing the location of gamma-ray production. Binary shaping of the nova ejecta and associated internal shocks are expected to be widespread among novae, explaining why many novae are gamma-ray emitters.

An Examination of Heavy Ion-Induced Persistent Visual Error Signatures in an Electronic Display Driver Integrated Circuit

Given the ubiquity of electronic displays integration in human-based systems, the impending mission critical, space-based applications of electronic displays will necessitate SEE assessment of components unique to electronic displays. A commercially available DDIC designed to drive a small form factor organic light emitting diode (OLED) was visually monitored during heavy ion irradiation to catalogue radiation induced persistent visual error signatures that require manual intervention (i.e., power cycling) to return to nominal function. These error signatures were able to be reproduced via modification of configuration register values utilizing the instruction set intended for interfacing a microcontroller with the DDIC. This approach to emulation of heavy-ion induced errors on a table-top assists with human perception-based criticality analysis as well as development of mitigation techniques.

Surface EVA Architectural Drivers

Key elements of NASA’s Moon to Mars Objectives for expanding humanity’s presence beyond low-Earth orbit will require surface-based, partial-gravity extravehicular activities (EVAs). Surface EVA needs affect many aspects of the exploration architecture, including EVA suit subsystems, such as suit or pressure garment mobility, the portable life support system, and the informatics system; and external systems, such as habitation modules and surface mobility platforms.

Bipolar current driver for memory circuits

Circuit which logically determines the state of a flip-flop and amplifies the current from a clock pulse provides a bipolar driving current to a memory circuit, the polarity of which is determined by the state of a flip-flop. This principle may be applied to various memory driving circuits where power dissipation must be minimized.

Conceptual servo technique for controlling tape drivers

Electronic speed control design maintains magnetic tape in close synchronism at the airborne and ground stationed devices. Use of the servo system during the record and reproduce modes results in the minimum amount of frequency distortion and flutter.
