DEXTER: A one-dimensional code for calculating thermionic performance of long converters

A versatile code is described for computing the coupled thermionic electric-thermal performance of long thermionic converters in which the temperature and voltage variations cannot be neglected. The code is capable of accounting for a variety of external electrical connection schemes, coolant flow paths and converter failures by partial shorting. Example problem solutions are included along with a user's manual.

Detailed design of a 100-We multicell thermionic power supply.

Confirmation of the general trends of a previously reported parametric study of plutonia-fueled thermionic generators in a detailed 100-We generator design. The detailed design takes into account the additional weight of system-integration components and shows that design refinements of all aeroshell components are possible when a specific generator configuration is considered. An optimized 100-We thermionic power supply design is presented, reflecting a 0.98 reliability goal after five years of operation. The optimum multicell array consists of 28 isomite converters, each producing approximately 3.6 We at end-of-life. The optimum arrangement of converters in the aeroshell is a four-column, seven-row stacking configuration connected electrically as a two-column, 14-row array.

Gas-operated actuator: A concept

Recyclable actuator does depend on valves for its operation. Palladium cathode tube in electrochemical cell is used to generate hydrogen by electrolysis. Hydrogen pressure generated inside tube causes expansion of bellows, which raises load. Bellows can be retracted by reversing electrical connections to cell electrodes.

Investigation of substrate-mounted thin-film meteoroid sensors for use in large area impact experiments

Two types of sensor designs were investigated: (1)a polysulfone dielectric film with vapor-deposited aluminum and gold sensor plates, bonded to a relatively thick aluminum substrate, and (2) an aluminum oxide (A1203) dielectric layer prepared on an aluminum substrate by anodization, with a layer of vapor-deposited aluminum providing one sensor plate and the substrate serving as the other plate. In the first design, specimens were prepared which indicate the state of the art for application of this type of sensor for elements of a meteoroid detection system having an area as large as 10 sq M. Techniques were investigated for casting large-area polysulfone films on the surface of water and for transferring the films from the water. Methods of preparing sensors by layering of films, the deposition of capacitor plates, and sensor film-to-substrate bonding, as well as techniques for making electrical connections to the capacitor plates, were studied.

Eight channel telephone telemetry system

A portable, indirectly coupled telephone system is reported which transmits/to a central receiving site eight channels of EEG data of sufficient fidelity for screening and/or limited diagnostic use. The system requires no electrical connection to the telephone at the transmitter or at the receiver and is compatible with common EEG recording practice for real-time recording. It accepts 8 input channels simultaneously with one telephone transmitter and one telephone receiver operates from standard power sources.

Experimental studies and applications of vanadium oxides.

The electrical and electrochemical properties of V-5 and V-7 vanadium oxides were investigated. The effects of pressure, temperature and moisture on the bulk resistivity of the oxides in powder, sintered, and crystalline form were determined, and the static and dynamic volt-ampere characteristics were obtained. Sintered samples tested showed better electrical stability than the compressed powder samples. Two types of commercially available vanadium pentoxide were heat-treated to obtain various crystalline oxide forms which were mounted on alumina substrates and terminated by thick-film conductors for making electrical connections. Indications are that these materials could have applications as sensors, critical-temperature resistors, high-speed switches, and temperature-compensation elements in hybrid microelectronic circuits.

Inherent redundacy electric heater

A cross-wound electrical heater comprising two resistance coils wound together with opposite pitches electrically connected at their crossing points, is reported. Each element is supplied by a separate power supply of the same magnitude, and each power supply is isolated from reverse currents by a diode. Failure of one of the windings results in only a moderate change in output power.

Metallic hot wire anemometer

A hot wire anemometer is described which has a body formed of heat resistant metal such as an alloy high in nickel content which supports a probe wire disposed in a V groove in the body. The V groove contains a high temperature ceramic adhesive that partially encompasses the downstream side of the probe wire. Mechanical and electrical connection to the probe wire is achieved through conductive support rods that are constructed of the same high temperature metal, insulation between the body and the conductor rods being provided by a coating of an oxide of the same material which coating is formed in situ. The oxide coating insulates the conductor rods from the body, mechanically fixes the conductors within the body, and maintains its integrity at elevated temperatures.

Easily-wired toggle switch

Crimp-type connectors reduce assembly and disassembly time. With design, no switch preparation is necessary and socket contracts are crimped to wires inserted in module attached to back of toggle switch engaging pins inside module to make electrical connections. Wires are easily removed with standard detachment tool. Design can accommodate wires of any gage and as many terminals can be placed on switch as wire gage and switch dimensions will allow.

Methods for measuring plating thicknesses on TAB lead frames

Plating three layer tape lead frames, used for tape automated bonding, offers a challenge to the electroplater because of nonuniform topography. Each lead frame contains large (typically .05 x. .05 inch) flat test pads located around the perimeter of the frame. These test pads are electrically connected to the bondable lead frame fingers which extend into an area in the center of the frame called the feature hole. The feature hole exposes these fingers to plating on all sides, while the test pads are exposed on only one side. In addition, the fingers are small in cross section (typically .003 x .0015 inches). Recent thickness measurements indicate that plating around the lead frame fingers is nearly twice as thick as that on test pad areas. Procedures and equipment were developed for measuring the thickness of the deposited material. Discussion was centered on the data obtained using the various measurement techniques and equipment.

The GEOS-20 m Cable Boom Mechanism

The GEOS Cable Boom Mechanism which allows the controlled deployment of a 20 m long cable in a centrifugal force field is described. In launch configuration the flat cable is reeled on a 240 mm diameter drum. The electrical connection between the rotating drum and the stationary housing is accomplished via a flexlead positioned inside the drum. Active motion control of this drum is achieved by a self locking worm gear, driven by a stepper motor. The deployment length of the cable is monitored by an optical length indicator, sensing black bars engraved on the cable surface.

Apparatus and method for stabilized phase detection for binary signal tracking loops

Apparatus and method is presented for phase detection in binary signal tracking loops wherein two bandpass detectors are alternately interchanged between electrical connection with two local code reference tracking signals in order to cancel any adverse effect of gain imbalance in the bandpass detectors and direct current offset or drift. The detectors are time shared in multiplex fashion between the two local reference signals.

Lightweight fuel cell powerplant components program

A lightweight hydrogen-oxygen alkaline fuel cell incorporated into the design of a lightweight fuel cell powerplant (LFCP) was analytically and experimentally developed. The powerplant operates with passive water removal which contributes to a lower system weight and extended operating life. A preliminary LFCP specification and design table were developed along with a lightweight power section for the LFCP design, consisting of repeating two-cell modules was designed. Two, four-cell modules were designed incorporating 0.508 sq ft active area space shuttle technology fuel cells. Over 1,200 hours of single-cell and over 8,800 hours of two-cell module testing was completed. The 0.25 sq ft active area lightweight cell design was shown to be capable of operating on propellant purity reactants out to a current density of 600ASF. Endurance testing of the two-cell module configuration exceeded the 2,500-hour LFCP voltage requirements out to 3700-hours. A two-cell module capable of operating at increased reactant pressure completed 1000 hours of operation at a 30 psia reactant pressure. A lightweight power section consisting of fifteen, two-cell modules connected electrically in series was fabricated.
