Experimental electron energy-loss spectra and cross sections for the 4/2/S - 4/2/P transition in Zn II

Electron energy-loss spectra and differential cross sections are reported for inelastic scattering from Zn II. Measurements were carried out in a crossed electron beam-ion beam apparatus, at incident electron energies of 30, 40, 50, 60, 75, 85, and 100 eV, and at a scattering angle of 14 deg. The present results are the first reported measurements of inelastic electron scattering from an ion.

Angular distribution of Auger electrons due to 3d-shell impact ionization of krypton

Cross sections for electron impact ionization of krypton due to ejection of a 3d-shell electron have been calculated using screened hydrogenic and Hartree-Slater wavefunctions for the target atom. While the total ionization cross sections in the two approximations are within 10% of each other, the Auger electron angular distribution, related to cross sections for specific magnetic quantum numbers of the 3d electrons, are widely different in the two approximations. The angular distribution due to the Hartree-Slater approximation is in excellent agreement with measurement. The physical reason for the discrepancies in the two approximations is explained.

Application of molecular convergent close-coupling cross sections in a collisional radiative model for the triplet system of molecular hydrogen

Collisional radiative (CR) models for molecular hydrogen are of high relevance for performing qualitative and quantitative analysis of excited-state population densities measured in plasmas or predicting the dependence of plasma emission on parameter variations. Although the development of such models for H 2 started decades ago, major uncertainties still exist regarding the most important set of input parameters, namely the cross sections for electron-impact excitation. The deviations between cross sections from different datasets are particularly pronounced in the energy region close to the threshold energy, strongly increasing the uncertainty of CR models applied to low-temperature plasmas. This paper presents experimental validation of a set of newly calculated non ro-vibrationally resolved electron-impact cross sections calculated for the triplet system of H 2 using the molecular convergent close-coupling method in the adiabatic-nuclei formulation. These cross sections are implemented into a CR model based on the flexible solver Yacora. A first comparison of CR calculations with the different datasets to experimentally-determined population densities is performed at a planar ICP discharge for varying pressure (between 1 and 10 Pa) and RF power (between 700 and 1100 W). For the experimentally-accessible electron temperature and density range (2.5–10 eV and 1.8–3.3 × 10 16 m –3 , respectively), very good agreement between the model and experiment is obtained using the new data set, in contrast to previously used cross sections.

First Measurement of the Flux-Averaged Differential Charged-Current Electron-Neutrino and Antineutrino Cross Section on Argon with the MicroBooNE Detector

The MicroBooNE experiment uses a liquid argon time projection chamber (LArTPC) located at Fermilab, Chicago. MicroBooNE is able to detect neutrinos from two accelerators: on-axis from the Booster Neutrino Beam (BNB) and off-axis from the Neutrinos at the Main Injector (NuMI). While one of the primary objectives of the MicroBooNE experiment is to search for short-baseline neutrino oscillations using the BNB, it also has a rich program of R\&D, neutrino-argon cross section measurements and beyond the standard model searches. This thesis presents a detailed study of the off-axis neutrino flux from the NuMI beam at MicroBooNE as well as measurements of the charged current flux-averaged total and differential electron neutrino and antineutrino cross section on argon using this beam. The data used in these measurements was taken during the first year of MicroBooNE running while the NuMI beam was in forward horn current mode. These are the first high statistics measurement s of ele ctron neutrino argon interactions and include the first measurement of this cross section as a function of the outgoing electron energy and with full angular coverage. The measurement is compared to the GENIE and NuWro generators and shows consistency with both.

Scaling of cross sections for K-electron capture by high-energy protons and alpha-particles from the multielectron atoms

Electron capture by protons from H, He, and the K shell of Ar, and electron capture by alpha particles from He are considered. Using the experimental data, a function of the capture cross section is formed. It is shown that when this function is plotted versus the inverse of the collision energies, at high energies a straight line is obtained. At lower energies the line is concave up or down, depending on the charge of the projectile and/or the effective charge and the ionization potential of the electron that is being captured. The plot can be used to predict cross sections where experimental data are not available, and as a guide in future experiments. High-energy scaling formulas for K-electron capture by low-charge projectiles are given.

Measurement of electron neutrino and antineutrino cross sections at low momentum transfer

Accelerator based neutrino oscillation experiments seek to measure the relative number of electron and muon (anti)neutrinos at different 𝐿/𝐸 values. However high statistics studies of neutrino interactions are almost exclusively measured using muon (anti)neutrinos since the dominant flavor of neutrinos produced by accelerator based beams are of the muon type. This work reports new measurements of electron (anti)neutrinos interactions in hydrocarbon, obtained by strongly suppressing backgrounds initiated by muon flavor (anti)neutrinos. Double differential cross sections as a function of visible energy transfer, 𝐸 avail , and transverse momentum transfer, 𝑝 𝑇 , or three momentum transfer, 𝑞 3 are presented.

Electron impact excitation of Hg/+/

A crossed charged beam technique was employed in the investigation reported. The ion beam was crossed at right angles by a magnetically confined electron beam. Cross sections were determined as a function of electron impact energy. Considerable structure in the excitation cross section appears immediately above the threshold. It is pointed out that a primary application of cross sections is related to the calculation of plasma rate coefficients.

Scaling of cross sections for K-electron capture by high-energy protons and alpha-particles from the multielectron atoms

Electron capture by protons from H, He, and the K-shell of Ar, and alpha particles from He are considered. At lower energies the function concaves up or down, depending on the charge of the projectile, the effective charge and the ionization potential of the electron that is being captured. The plot can be used to predict cross sections where experimental data are not available, and as a guide in future experiments. High energy scaling formulas for K-electron capture by low-charge projectiles are given.

Electron-Impact-Induced Emission Cross Sections of Neon in the Extreme Ultraviolet

We have measured the extreme ultraviolet (EUV) spectrum of neon produced by electron excitation. The measurements were obtained under optically thin conditions, and at a spectral resolution of 0.5 nm full width at half maximum (FWHM). The most prominent features of the EUV spectrum between 45-80 nm are the resonance lines of Ne I at 73.6 and 74.4 nm and a multiplet of Ne II at 46.14 nm (the average value for the line center of the two closely spaced ion lines at 46.07 and 46.22 nm). Absolute emission cross sections of these lines at 300 eV were measured and compared to other previous measurements.

Benchmark calculations of electron impact electronic excitation of the hydrogen molecule

We present benchmark integrated and differential cross-sections for electron collisions with H 2 using two different theoretical approaches, namely, the R-matrix and molecular convergent close-coupling. This is similar to comparative studies conducted on electron–atom collisions for H, He and Mg. Electron impact excitation to the ${\mathrm{b}}^{3}{{\Sigma}}_{\mathrm{u}}^{+}$, ${\mathrm{a}}^{3}{{\Sigma}}_{\mathrm{g}}^{+}$, ${\mathrm{B}}^{1}{{\Sigma}}_{\mathrm{u}}^{+}$, c3Πu, ${\mathrm{E}\mathrm{F}}^{1}{{\Sigma}}_{\mathrm{g}}^{+}$, C1Πu, ${\mathrm{e}}^{3}{{\Sigma}}_{\mathrm{u}}^{+}$, ${\mathrm{h}}^{3}{{\Sigma}}_{\mathrm{g}}^{+}$, ${\mathrm{B}}^{\prime 1}{{\Sigma}}_{\mathrm{u}}^{+}$ and d3Πu excited electronic states are considered. Calculations are presented in both the fixed nuclei and adiabatic nuclei approximations, where the latter is shown only for the ${\mathrm{b}}^{3}{{\Sigma}}_{\mathrm{u}}^{+}$ state. Good agreement is found for all transitions presented. Where available, we compare with existing experimental and recommended data.

Electron impact excitation and dissociation of N2 via the b 1Pi(u) state

Electron impact excitation of the b 1Pi(u) state in N2 plays a prominent role in the dissociation of the molecule and thus in the production of atomic nitrogen in planetary atmospheres. Electron impact excitation cross sections combined with electron-impact-induced fluorescence measurements can yield the corresponding dissociation cross sections. Serious discrepancies exist among excitation cross sections reported in the literature. To clarify the situation, these cross sections were measured at two impact energies using electron energy loss spectroscopy. The new results are in agreement with recent values deduced from optical measurements and fall midway between previous results which are too high or low by factors of 2.
