Electron microscopic and optical studies of prism faces of synthetic quartz

Application of electron and optical microscopic techniques to the study of growth spirals on quartz crystal faces is described. Attention is centered on the centers of the spirals and on screw ledges; overhanging kinks are revealed on one side of the spiral centers. The possibility that these special features may have developed after growth of the crystals went to completion is explored. The conjecture is raised that such structures might result from adsorption of growth-inhibiting impurities at the center of the growth spiral on the quartz habit faces.

NRL-ATM extreme ultraviolet solar image TV monitor flown on Skylab

An instrument for recording extreme ultraviolet television images of the sun was flown in the Apollo Telescope Mount on Skylab. Solar radiation in the 171-630 A wavelength range, defined by the transmission band of three thin-film aluminum filters, was focused onto a p-quaterphenyl photon conversion layer by a platinum-coated mirror at normal incidence. The conversion layer was attached to the faceplate of a low light level SEC vidicon. An onboard video monitor enabled the Skylab crews to observe the images in real-time and to identify and follow the development of solar features. Images were also transmitted to the mission control center, where they were used in planning the ATM observing schedule.

A practical magnetic bearing

A small compact magnetic bearing design developed and tested features a bearing capable of supporting over ten times its own weight, dimensioned 8 cm diam by 3.75 cm, with rare-earth cobalt magnets. Only 1% of the device payload figures as part of the magnetic suspension. The design is servoed in two axes and exhibits inherent stability in three more degrees of freedom, with full rotational freedom in the desired axis. Capacitive radial gap sensing allows stiff servoing of the rotation axis. Differential sensing and EM control linearize control functions. Low power drain, simple fabrication and assembly, and larger clearances than in air bearings or ball bearings are reported

Large eddy simulation of incompressible turbulent channel flow

The three-dimensional, time-dependent primitive equations of motion were numerically integrated for the case of turbulent channel flow. A partially implicit numerical method was developed. An important feature of this scheme is that the equation of continuity is solved directly. The residual field motions were simulated through an eddy viscosity model, while the large-scale field was obtained directly from the solution of the governing equations. An important portion of the initial velocity field was obtained from the solution of the linearized Navier-Stokes equations. The pseudospectral method was used for numerical differentiation in the horizontal directions, and second-order finite-difference schemes were used in the direction normal to the walls. The large eddy simulation technique is capable of reproducing some of the important features of wall-bounded turbulent flows. The resolvable portions of the root-mean square wall pressure fluctuations, pressure velocity-gradient correlations, and velocity pressure-gradient correlations are documented.

The Earth Radiation Budget Satellite System

The scientific objectives of an Earth Radiation Budget Satellite System (ERBSS) are discussed along with the associated data analysis methods, mission analysis, and the instrument systems. High resolution data on the scale of about 250 km over the entire globe are essential to gain insight into such features as the development of sea-surface temperature anomalies, radiation effects of ice and snow cover on the atmospheric circulation, albedo variation in the desert-vegetation boundaries, and major long-period circulation phenomena. The ERBSS experiment is also viewed as a precursor of an operational satellite system for monitoring the earth's radiation budget. Various numbers of satellites and orbit inclinations have been analyzed to define the satellite combination which provides sufficient coverage of the earth for spatial and temporal radiation sampling.

Annoyance of helicopter impulsive noise

Psychoacoustic studies of helicopter impulsive noise were conducted in order to qualify additional annoyance due to this feature and to develop physical impulsiveness descriptors to develop impulsivity correction methods. The currently proposed descriptors and methods of impulsiveness correction are compared using a multilinear regression analysis technique. It is shown that the presently recommended descriptor and correction method provides the best correlation with the subjective evaluations of real helicopter impulsive noises. The equipment necessary for data processing in order to apply the correction method is discussed.

Quiet Clean Short-haul Experimental Engine (QCSEE). Double-annular clean combustor technology development report

A sector combustor technology development program was conducted to define an advanced double annular dome combustor sized for use in the quiet clean short haul experimental engine (QCSEE). A design which meets the emission goals, and combustor performance goals of the QCSEE engine program was developed. Key design features were identified which resulted in substantial reduction in carbon monoxide and unburned hydrocarbon emission levels at ground idle operating conditions, in addition to very low nitric oxide emission levels at high power operating conditions. Their significant results are reported.

The effect of magnetic fields on solar luminosity

The paper presents an investigation into the influence of magnetic fields in sunspots and faculae on solar luminosity, using measurements of the solar constant from ground level and from space. Attention is given to an analysis that shows that it is difficult to devise an atmospheric mechanism that would rapidly lower visible and infrared transmission in response to sunspots, increase it in response to faculae, and anticipate the magnetic development of these features by about one day. It is shown that the phase shift of the luminosity variation provides a promising new technique to determine the depth at which the magnetic fields of sunspots and faculae redistribute the flow of convective energy.

Absolute line strengths in nu4, /C-12/H4 - A dual-beam diode laser spectrometer with sweep integration

A tunable diode laser spectrometer with several unique features has been developed for use in the middle IR. The all-reflective optical system has a dual-beam configuration before the dispersive mode selector to eliminate transit-angle errors at the calibration etalon. By maintaining separated beams through the mode selector, beam combiner losses are avoided. Averaging successive sweeps of the current-modulated laser permits stable reproducible spectral integrations, eliminating etalon thermal errors and producing high photometric sensitivity. Line strengths have been measured using this instrument for eleven transitions in nu4 of (C-12)H4. These include R0 and R1 and nine P-branch transitions in the 1202-1263-per cm range. Techniques for measuring strengths with a diode laser are discussed.

On the applicability of eigenvalue/eigenvector assignment in multivariable systems

The technique of multivariable control-system design via assignment of the closed loop state matrix eigensystem is described. Features of this developing methodology include exact eigenvalue assignment, eigenvector assignment that approximates in a least squares sense a priori modal specifications, and an interactive design trade-off between the latter and desired eigensystem sensitivity with respect to plant parameters.

Superconducting tensor gravity gradiometer for satellite geodesy and inertial navigation

A sensitive gravity gradiometer can provide much needed gravity data of the earth and improve the accuracy of inertial navigation. Superconductivity and other properties of materials at low temperatures can be used to obtain a sensitive, low-drift gravity gradiometer; by differencing the outputs of accelerometer pairs using superconducting circuits, it is possible to construct a tensor gravity gradiometer which measures all the in-line and cross components of the tensor simultaneously. Additional superconducting circuits can be provided to determine the linear and angular acceleration vectors. A tensor gravity gradiometer with these features is being developed for satellite geodesy. The device constitutes a complete package of inertial navigation instruments with angular and linear acceleration readouts as well as gravity signals.

Theoretical design study of the MSFC wind-wheel turbine

A wind wheel turbine (WWT) is studied. Evaluation of the probable performance, possible practical applications, and economic viability as compared to other conventional wind energy systems is discussed. The WWT apparatus is essentially a bladed wheel which is directly exposed to the wind on the upper half and exposed to wind through multiple ducting on the lower half. The multiple ducts consist of a forward duct (front concentrator) and two side ducts (side concentrators). The forced rotation of the wheel is then converted to power through appropriate subsystems. Test results on two simple models, a paper model and a stainless steel model, are reported. Measured values of power coefficients over wind speeds ranging from 4 to 16 m/s are given. An analytical model of a four bladed wheel is also developed. Overall design features of the wind turbine are evaluated and discussed. Turbine sizing is specified for a 5 and 25 kW machine. Suggested improvements to the original design to increase performance and performance predictions for an improved WWT design are given.

An assessment of preliminary aerodynamic analysis methods for supersonic speeds including high angle-of-attack flow

The problems associated with predicting the aerodynamic loads for moderate supersonic Mach number, high angle-of-attack flows and for high supersonic Mach number flows are addressed. For these large disturbance-type flows, commonly used prediction methods based on linearized theory or on the tangent-wedge method are shown to be generally inadequate. For the preliminary analysis of aerodynamic shapes subjected to these type flows, two methods have recently been developed by combining features of the linearized theory and tangent-wedge method. These two new methods are discussed, and through extensive comparisons with experimental data, are shown to offer an improved prediction capability.

Hindlimb immobilization - Length-tension and contractile properties of skeletal muscle

Casts were placed around rat feet in plantar flexion position to immobilize the soleus muscle in a shortened position, while the other foot was fixed in dorsal flexion to set the extensor digitorum longus in a shortened position. The total muscular atrophy and contractile properties were measured at 1, 2, 4, 7, 14, 21, 28, 35, and 42 days after immobilization, with casts being replaced every two weeks. The slow twitch soleus and the fast-twitch vastus lateralis and longus muscles were excised after termination of the experiment. The muscles were then stretched and subjected to electric shock to elicit peak tetanic tension and peak tetanic tension development. Force velocity features of the three muscles were assayed in a series of afterloaded contractions and fiber lengths were measured from subsequently macerated muscle. All muscles atrophied during immobilization, reaching a new steady state by day 21. Decreases in fiber and sarcomere lengths were also observed.
