Reviving QFT in ( 2 + 1 )-dimensional de Sitter spacetime

We consider a conformally coupled scalar quantum field theory (QFT) on ( 2 + 1 )-dimensional static Einstein universe R × S 2 and write down the free theory Hilbert space. We explain that this theory is secretly a QFT in ( 2 + 1 )-dimensional de Sitter space because all the quantum observables experience “quantum revivals,” which naturally restricts the timelike R to the appropriate de Sitter time range. Our construction circumvents the causal obstruction to formulating QFT in de Sitter due to event horizons. There are not any in static Einstein. The “unitary gauge” description of the theory is realized by the zonal harmonics P ℓ ( n ^ · n ^ ′ ) . We verify that interactions with conformally invariant external sources are mediated only by these modes. Hence these modes comprise the complete basis of the “bulk” theory. When the theory is cut off in the UV, the basis dimension scales as the Bekenstein-Hawking formula. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Properties of the new $ \mathcal{N} $ = 1 AdS 4 vacuum of maximal supergravity

The recent comprehensive numerical study of critical points of the scalar potential of four-dimensional N = 8, SO(8) gauged supergravity using Machine Learning software in [1] has led to a discovery of a new N = 1 vacuum with a triality-invariant SO(3) symmetry. Guided by the numerical data for that point, we obtain a consistent SO(3) × Z 2 -invariant truncation of the N = 8 theory to an N = 1 supergravity with three chiral multiplets. Critical points of the truncated scalar potential include both the N = 1 point as well as two new non-supersymmetric and perturbatively unstable points not found by previous searches. Studying the structure of the submanifold of SO(3) × Z 2 -invariant supergravity scalars, we find that it has a simple interpretation as a submanifold of the 14-dimensional Z $3\atop{2}$ -invariant scalar manifold (SU(1, 1)/U(1)) 7 , for which we find a rather remarkable superpotential whose structure matches the single bit error correcting (7, 4) Hamming code. This 14-dimensional scalar manifold contains approximately one quarter of the known critical points. We also show that there exists a smooth supersymmetric domain wall which interpolates between the new N = 1 AdS4 solution and the maximally supersymmetric AdS4 vacuum. Using holography, this result indicates the existence of an N = 1 RG flow from the ABJM SCFT to a new strongly interacting conformal fixed point in the IR.

Fermionic Finite-Group Gauge Theories and Interacting Symmetric/Crystalline Orders via Cobordisms

We formulate a family of spin Topological Quantum Field Theories (spin-TQFTs) as fermionic generalization of bosonic Dijkgraaf–Witten TQFTs. They are obtained by gauging G-equivariant invertible spin-TQFTs, or, in physics language, gauging the interacting fermionic Symmetry Protected Topological states (SPTs) with a finite group G symmetry. We use the fact that the torsion part of the classification is given by Pontryagin duals to spin-bordism groups of the classifying space BG. We also consider unoriented analogues, that is G-equivariant invertible pin ± -TQFTs (fermionic time-reversal-SPTs) and their gauging. We compute these groups for various examples of abelian G using Adams spectral sequence and describe all corresponding TQFTs via certain bordism invariants in 3, 4 and other dimensions. This gives explicit formulas for the partition functions of spin-TQFTs on closed manifolds with possible extended operators inserted. The results also provide explicit classification of ’t Hooft anomalies of fermionic QFTs with finite abelian group symmetries in one dimension lower. We construct new anomalous boundary spin-TQFTs (surface fermionic topological orders). Finally, we explore SPT and symmetry enriched topologically (SET) ordered states, and crystalline SPTs protected by space-group (e.g. translation Z) or point-group (e.g. reflection, inversion or rotation C m ) symmetries, via the layer-stacking construction.

3d-3d correspondence for mapping tori

One of the main challenges in 3d-3d correspondence is that no existent approach offers a complete description of 3d N = 2 SCFT T [ M 3 ] — or, rather, a “collection of SCFTs” as we refer to it in the paper — for all types of 3-manifolds that include, for example, a 3-torus, Brieskorn spheres, and hyperbolic surgeries on knots. The goal of this paper is to overcome this challenge by a more systematic study of 3d-3d correspondence that, first of all, does not rely heavily on any geometric structure on M 3 and, secondly, is not limited to a particular supersymmetric partition function of T [ M 3 ]. In particular, we propose to describe such “collection of SCFTs” in terms of 3d N = 2 gauge theories with “non-linear matter” fields valued in complex group manifolds. As a result, we are able to recover familiar 3-manifold invariants, such as Turaev torsion and WRT invariants, from twisted indices and half-indices of T [ M 3 ], and propose new tools to compute more recent q -series invariants Z * ( M 3 ) in the case of manifolds with b 1 > 0. Although we use genus-1 mapping tori as our “case study,” many results and techniques readily apply to more general 3-manifolds, as we illustrate throughout the paper.

Study of gapped phases of 4d gauge theories using temporal gauging of the ℤN 1-form symmetry

To study gapped phases of 4d gauge theories, we introduce the temporal gauging of Z N 1-form symmetry in 4d quantum field theories (QFTs), thereby defining effective 3d QFTs with $\tilde{Z}_N$ × Z N 1-form symmetry. In this way, spatial fundamental Wilson and ’t Hooft loops are simultaneously genuine line operators. Assuming a mass gap and Lorentz invariant vacuum of the 4d QFT, the $\tilde{Z}_N$ × Z N symmetry must be spontaneously broken to an order-N subgroup H, and we can classify the 4d gapped phases by specifying H. This establishes the 1-to-1 correspondence between the two classification schemes for gapped phases of 4d gauge theories: one is the conventional Wilson-’t Hooft classification, and the other is the modern classification using the spontaneous breaking of 4d 1-form symmetry enriched with symmetry-protected topological states.

Composing effective prediction at five points

Color-kinematics duality in the adjoint has proven key to the relationship between gauge and gravity theory scattering amplitude predictions. In recent work, we demonstrated that at four-point tree-level, a small number of color-dual EFT building blocks could encode all higher-derivative single-trace massless corrections to gauge and gravity theories compatible with adjoint double-copy. One critical aspect was the trivialization of building higher-derivative color-weights — indeed, it is the mixing of kinematics with non-adjoint-type color-weights (like the permutation-invariant d 4 ) which permits description via adjoint double-copy. Here we find that such ideas clarify the predictions of local five-point higher-dimensional operators as well. We demonstrate how a single scalar building block can be combined with color structures to build higher-derivative color factors that generate, through double copy, the amplitudes associated with higher-derivative gauge-theory operators. These may then be suitably mapped, through another double-copy, to higher-derivative corrections in gravity.

Simulating non-native cubic interactions on noisy quantum machines

As a milestone for general-purpose computing machines, we demonstrate that quantum processors can be programed to efficiently simulate dynamics that are not native to the hardware. Moreover, on noisy devices without error correction, we show that simulation results are significantly improved when the quantum program is compiled using modular gates instead of a restricted set of standard gates. We demonstrate the general methodology by solving a cubic interaction problem, which appears in nonlinear optics, gauge theories, as well as plasma and fluid dynamics. To encode the non-native Hamiltonian evolution, we decompose the Hilbert space into a direct sum of invariant subspaces in which the nonlinear problem is mapped to a finite-dimensional Hamiltonian simulation problem. Furthermore, in a three-states example, the resultant unitary evolution is realized by a product of approximately 20 standard gates, using which approximately ten simulation steps can be carried out on state-of-the-art quantum hardware before results are corrupted by decoherence. In comparison, the simulation depth is improved by more than an order of magnitude when the unitary evolution is realized as a single cubic gate, which is compiled directly using optimal control. Alternatively, parametric gates may also be compiled by interpolating control pulses. Modular gates thus obtained provide high-fidelity building blocks for quantum Hamiltonian simulations.

SMEFT matching to Z ’ models at dimension eight

Heavy neutral gauge bosons arise in many motivated models of beyond the Standard Model Physics. Experimental searches require that such gauge bosons are above the TeV scale in most models which means that the tools of effective field theories, in particular the Standard Model effective field theory (SMEFT), are useful. We match the SMEFT to models with heavy Z ’ bosons, including effects of dimension-8 operators, and consider the restrictions on model parameters from electroweak precision measurements and from Drell Yan invariant mass distributions and forward-backward asymmetry, 𝐴FB, measurements at the LHC. The results demonstrate the model dependence of the resulting limits on SMEFT coefficients and the relatively small impact of including dimension-8 matching. In all cases, the limits from invariant mass distributions are stronger than from 𝐴FB measurements in the Z ’ models we consider.

Mocking the u-plane integral

Abstract The u -plane integral is the contribution of the Coulomb branch to correlation functions of $${\mathcal {N}}=2$$ N = 2 gauge theory on a compact four-manifold. We consider the u -plane integral for correlators of point and surface observables of topologically twisted theories with gauge group $$\mathrm{SU}(2)$$ SU ( 2 ) , for an arbitrary four-manifold with $$(b_1,b_2^+)=(0,1)$$ ( b 1 , b 2 + ) = ( 0 , 1 ) . The u -plane contribution equals the full correlator in the absence of Seiberg–Witten contributions at strong coupling, and coincides with the mathematically defined Donaldson invariants in such cases. We demonstrate that the u -plane correlators are efficiently determined using mock modular forms for point observables, and Appell–Lerch sums for surface observables. We use these results to discuss the asymptotic behavior of correlators as function of the number of observables. Our findings suggest that the vev of exponentiated point and surface observables is an entire function of the fugacities.

Non-perturbative geometries for planar $ \mathcal{N} $ = 4 SYM amplitudes

There is a remarkable well-known connection between the G(4, n) cluster algebra and n-particle amplitudes in $ \mathcal{N} $ = 4 SYM theory. For n ≥ 8 two long-standing open questions have been to find a mathematically natural way to identify a finite list of amplitude symbol letters from among the infinitely many cluster variables, and to find an explanation for certain algebraic functions, such as the square roots of four-mass-box type, that are expected to appear in symbols but are not cluster variables. In this letter we use the notion of “stringy canonical forms” to construct polytopal realizations of certain compactifications of (the positive part of) the configuration space Conf n (P k–1 ) ≅ G(k, n)/T that are manifestly finite for all k and n. Some facets of these polytopes are naturally associated to cluster variables, while others are naturally associated to algebraic functions constructed from Lusztig’s canonical basis. For (k, n) = (4, 8) the latter include precisely the expected square roots, revealing them to be related to certain “overpositive” functions of the kinematical invariants.

Role of generic scale invariance in a Mott transition from a U(1) spin-liquid insulator to a Landau Fermi-liquid metal

Highlights: • We look at the role played by generic scale invariance (GSI) in the phase transition between a U(1) spin liquid and a Fermi liquid. • We identify dangerously irrelevant operators in the renormalization group transformation, involved with the GSI. • We highlight novel mean-field dynamics of this Mott quantum criticality, resulting from the GSI. We investigate the role of generic scale invariance in a Mott transition from a U(1) spin-liquid insulator to a Landau Fermi-liquid metal, where there exist massless degrees of freedom in addition to quantum critical fluctuations. Here, the Mott quantum criticality is described by critical charge fluctuations, and additional gapless excitations are U(1) gauge-field fluctuations coupled to a spinon Fermi surface in the spin-liquid state, which turn out to play a central role in the Mott transition. An interesting feature of this problem is that the scaling dimension of effective leading local interactions between critical charge fluctuations differs from that of the coupling constant between U(1) gauge fields and matter-field fluctuations in the presence of a Fermi surface. As a result, there appear dangerously irrelevant operators, which can cause conceptual difficulty in the implementation of renormalization group (RG) transformations. Indeed, we find that the curvature term along the angular direction of the spinon Fermi surface is dangerously irrelevant at this spin-liquid Mott quantum criticality, responsible for divergence of the self-energy correction term in U(1) gauge-field fluctuations. Performing the RG analysis in the one-loop level based on the dimensional regularization method, we reveal that such extremely overdamped dynamics of U(1) gauge-field fluctuations, which originates from the emergent one-dimensional dynamics of spinons, does not cause any renormalization effects to the effective dynamics of both critical charge fluctuations and spinon excitations. However, it turns out that the coupling between U(1) gauge-field fluctuations and both matter-field excitations still persists at this Mott transition, which results in novel mean-field dynamics to explain the nature of the spin-liquid Mott quantum criticality. We discuss physical implications of effective one-dimensional spin dynamics and extremely overdamped gauge dynamics at the Mott quantum criticality.

Giant gravitons, Harish-Chandra integrals, and BPS states in symplectic and orthogonal $\mathcal{N}$ = 4 SYM

We find generating functions for half BPS correlators in $\mathcal{N}$ = 4 SYM theories with gauge groups Sp(2N), SO(2N + 1), and SO(2N) by computing the norms of a class of BPS coherent states. These coherent states are built from operators involving Harish-Chandra integrals. Such operators have an interpretation as localized giant gravitons in the bulk of anti-de-Sitter space. This extends the analysis of [1] to Sp(2N), SO(2N + 1), and SO(2N) gauge theories. We show that we may use ordinary Schur functions as a basis for the sector of states with no cross-caps in these theories. This is consistent with the construction of these theories as orientifold projections of an SU(2N) theory. We make note of some relations between the symmetric functions that appear in the expansion of these coherent states and symplectic Schur functions. We also comment on some connections to Schubert calculus and Gromov-Witten invariants, which suggest that the Harish-Chandra integral may be extended to such problems.

Search for high-mass exclusive γγ → WW and γγ → ZZ production in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A search is performed for exclusive high-mass γγ → WW and γγ → ZZ production in proton-proton collisions using intact forward protons reconstructed in near-beam detectors, with both weak bosons decaying into boosted and merged jets. The analysis is based on a sample of proton-proton collisions collected by the CMS and TOTEM experiments at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 100 fb -1 . No excess above the standard model background prediction is observed, and upper limits are set on the pp → pWWp and pp → pZZp cross sections in a fiducial region defined by the diboson invariant mass m(VV) > 1 TeV (with V = W, Z) and proton fractional momentum loss 0.04 < ξ < 0.20. The results are interpreted as new limits on dimension-6 and dimension-8 anomalous quartic gauge couplings.

Three-dimensional imaging of pion using lattice QCD: generalized parton distributions

In this work, we report a lattice calculation of x-dependent valence pion generalized parton distributions (GPDs) at zero skewness with multiple values of the momentum transfer −t. The calculations are based on an N f = 2 + 1 gauge ensemble of highly improved staggered quarks with Wilson-Clover valence fermion. The lattice spacing is 0.04 fm, and the pion valence mass is tuned to be 300 MeV. We determine the Lorentz-invariant amplitudes of the quasi-GPD matrix elements for both symmetric and asymmetric momenta transfers with similar values and show the equivalence of both frames. Then, focusing on the asymmetric frame, we utilize a hybrid scheme to renormalize the quasi-GPD matrix elements obtained from the lattice calculations. After the Fourier transforms, the quasi-GPDs are then matched to the light-cone GPDs within the framework of large momentum effective theory with improved matching, including the next-to-next-to-leading order perturbative corrections, and leading renormalon and renormalization group resummations. We also present the 3-dimensional image of the pion in impact-parameter space through the Fourier transform of the momentum transfer −t.

Heterotic backgrounds via generalised geometry: moment maps and moduli

We describe the geometry of generic heterotic backgrounds preserving minimal supersymmetry in four dimensions using the language of generalised geometry. They are characterised by an SU(3) × Spin(6 + n) structure within O(6, 6 + n) x $\mathbb{R}$ + generalised geometry. Supersymmetry of the background is encoded in the existence of an involutive subbundle of the generalised tangent bundle and the vanishing of a moment map for the action of diffeomorphisms and gauge symmetries. We give both the superpotential and the Kähler potential for a generic background, showing that the latter defines a natural Hitchin functional for heterotic geometries. Intriguingly, this formulation suggests new connections to geometric invariant theory and an extended notion of stability. Finally we show that the analysis of infinitesimal deformations of these geometric structures naturally reproduces the known cohomologies that count the massless moduli of supersymmetric heterotic backgrounds.

Characterization and classification of interacting ( 2 + 1 )-dimensional topological crystalline insulators with orientation-preserving wallpaper groups

While free fermion topological crystalline insulators have been largely classified, the analogous problem in the strongly interacting case has been only partially solved. In this work, we develop a characterization and classification of interacting, invertible fermionic topological phases in (2+1) dimensions with charge conservation, discrete magnetic translation and M-fold point group rotation symmetries, which form the group G f = U(1) f × Φ [Z 2 $\rtimes$Z M ] for M = 1,2,3,4, and 6. Φ is the magnetic flux per unit cell. We derive a topological response theory in terms of background crystalline gauge fields, which gives a complete classification of different phases and a physical characterization in terms of quantized response to symmetry defects. We then derive the same classification in terms of a set of real space invariants {$Θ^±_o$} that can be obtained from ground state expectation values of suitable partial rotation operators. We explicitly relate these real space invariants to the quantized coefficients in the topological response theory, and find the dependence of the invariants on the chiral central charge c – of the invertible phase. Finally, when Φ = 0 we derive an explicit map between the free and interacting classifications.

Renormalizing two-fermion operators in the SMEFT via supergeometry

We extend the geometric framework of field-space covariance for loop computations, thereby unifying the treatment of scalars, fermions, and gauge bosons in effective field theories. This allows us to derive a manifestly covariant formula for one-loop UV divergences that includes contributions from mixed boson-fermion graphs. The result is expressed in terms of geometric invariants of the field-space supermanifold. As a demonstration of this formula, we compute the renormalization group equations for two-fermion operators at the dimension-eight level in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory.
