Evidence of antiferromagnetism in ultrathin metallic (111)-oriented LaNiO 3 films

Antiferromagnets with exotic spin textures promise low-power spintronic devices with extremely high operating frequencies and resistance to external perturbations. In particular, the combination of highly tunable correlated electron physics, as in complex oxides, with metallicity and antiferromagnetism is desirable but exceedingly rare. LaNiO 3 , the lone example of a perovskite nickelate which is metallic across all temperatures, has long been a promising candidate, but the antiferromagnetic metallic state has remained elusive. Here, we demonstrate the emergence of this state in ultrathin films of (111)-oriented LaNiO 3 using a combination of polarized neutron reflectometry, low-energy muon spectroscopy and anomalous Hall effect measurements, and density functional theory calculations with a Hubbard U term. Further, we find a highly strained symmetry-breaking interfacial region which may support canting of the AFM moments leading to a vanishingly small net magnetization at the film-substrate interface, providing a convenient route toward control of the Néel order. Evidence of antiferromagnetic metallic behavior in (111)LNO films highlights the role of crystal symmetry in tuning the novel quantum states in complex oxides.

Probing Ice-Rule-Breaking Transition in Dy 2 Ti 2 O 7 Thin Film by Proximitized Transport and Magnetic Torque

While the spin-ice state of bulk pyrochlores such as Dy 2⁢ Ti 2 ⁢O 7 and Ho 2⁢ Ti 2 ⁢O 7 has been extensively studied in the past several decades due to its unique degenerate ground state and emergent monopole excitation, whether it survives in the thin-film form remains a mystery. The limited volume of the thin-film sample makes it challenging to study the intrinsic magnetic properties. Here, we synthesized 18-nm-thick Dy 2⁢ Ti 2 ⁢O 7 thin film on yttria-stabilized zirconia with 9.5 mol% Y 2 ⁢O 3 substrate and capped it by a thin conductive Bi 2 ⁢Ir 2 ⁢O 7 layer and performed the proximitized magnetoresistance measurements. Our Letter found that the ice-rule-breaking phase transition survives but with a modified effective nearest-neighbor interaction (𝐽 eff =1.054 K) and distorted Ising spin axes (𝜀 = +0.051) compared to the bulk crystal. Furthermore, the results are supported by the simultaneously measured capacitive torque magnetometry. Our Letter demonstrates that proximitized transport is an effective tool for thin films of insulating frustrated magnets.

Magnetically tuned metal-insulator transition in LaAlO 3 /SrTiO 3 nanowire arrays

A wide family of two-dimensional (2D) systems, including stripe-phase superconductors, sliding Luttinger liquids, and anisotropic 2D materials, can be modeled by an array of coupled one-dimensional (1D) electron channels or nanowire arrays. Here we report experiments in arrays of conducting nanowires with gate and field tunable interwire coupling, that are programmed at the LaAlO 3 /SrTiO 3 interface. We find a magnetically tuned metal-to-insulator transition in which the transverse resistance of the nanowire array increases by up to four orders of magnitude, which can be further tuned with a gate voltage. To explain this behavior, we develop a minimal model of a coupled two-wire system where a Wenzel-Kramers-Brillouin-based approach is used to estimate the transverse tunneling conductance. We demonstrate the existence of distinct conductance features and highlight the crucial role played by the field dependence of the interwire potential barrier on transport properties. Since our model makes minimal assumptions, we expect our predictions to hold for a wide class of coupled 1D systems. The nanowire arrays can serve as model systems to understand the origin of exotic behavior in correlated materials via analog quantum simulation.

Nanoscale Ferroelectric Control of Novel Electronic States in Layered Two-Dimensional Materials (Final Report)

In this DOE Early Career project “Nanoscale Ferroelectric Control of Novel Electronic States in Layered Two-Dimensional Materials,” the PI’s group has combined ferroelectric field effect with nanoscale domain imaging and writing to design the electronic and optical properties of two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals materials, including graphene and transition metal dichalcogenides MoS2 and ReS2. The van der Waals materials have been prepared into field effect transistor (FET) devices with ferroelectric gates. Through domain patterning in a ferroelectric polymer PVDF-TrEF top-gate via conductive atomic force microscopy, the team has created programmable Schottky junctions in monolayer MoS 2 , where both barrier height and I-V rectifying polarity can be reconfigured. The transport anisotropy of monolayer to few-layer ReS 2 has been mapped out by defining the entire channel into an insulating state and creating nanoscale conducting paths along different directions through domain writing in the ferroelectric top-gate. The result shows that the conductivity along and perpendicular to the Re-chain can differ by >5.5x10 4 . Theoretical modeling points to the band origin of the transport anomaly and reveals the emergence of a flat band in few-layer ReS 2 . The interfacial epitaxial relation between ReS 2 and PVDF-TrFE further promotes the formation of close-packed, highly ordered PVDF-TrFE nanowires with width of 35 nm and 10 nm. Nonvolatile modulation of quantum Hall effect has been achieved in graphene FETs with a ferroelectric oxide Ba 0.4 Sr 0.6 TiO 3 back-gate. Scattering from the remote surface optical phonon in Ba 0.4 Sr 0.6 TiO 3 limits the room temperature mobility of graphene to be about 3x10 4 cm 2 /Vs. Steep-slope switching has been achieved in MoS 2 FETs back-gated by polycrystalline Pb(Zr,Ti)O 3 , which signals a static-state negative capacitance mode without involving an additional dielectric layer. Piezoresponse force microscopy studies show that the sub-threshold swing can be well correlated with the domain wall density in Pb(Zr,Ti)O 3 . The team also observes an unconventional filtering effect of the second harmonic generation response at the MoS 2 /Pb(Zr,Ti)O 3 heterointerface, which can be accounted for by the alignment between one of the polar axes of MoS 2 and the chiral dipole rotation at the surface of domain wall in Pb(Zr,Ti)O 3 . The research supported by this DOE grant has significantly advanced the fundamental understanding and functional design of ferroelectric/2D van der Waals heterostructures for their implementation towards energy applications.
