Light-Induced Metastabilities in Highly Efficient MZO/CdSeTe/CdTe Thin Film Solar Cells

Metastability effects have been investigated in high efficiency MZO/CdSeTe/CdTe solar cells. Two different preconditioning procedures have been studied to recover the performance of the devices. These preconditioning procedures include light soaking, annealing and cooling down the device under different atmospheric conditions. J-V curves before any preconditioning showed a `S` shaped behavior and disappears after 15 minutes of light soaking under 1000 Wm-2. Both Atmospheric and Vacuum preconditioning showed similar recovery of the device performance. However, this recovery only lasts for 3 days when the devices were kept under vacuum in the dark.

Rapid consolidation method for preparing bulk metastable iron-rich materials

Interstitially modified compounds of rare earth element-containing, iron-rich compounds may be synthesized with a ThMn 12 tetragonal crystal structure such that the compounds have useful permanent magnet properties. It is difficult to consolidate particles of the compounds into a bulk shape without altering the composition and magnetic properties of the metastable material. A combination of thermal analysis and crystal structure analysis of each compound may be used to establish heating and consolidation parameters for sintering of the particles into useful magnet shapes.

Light-Induced Transient Lattice Dynamics and Metastable Phase Transition in CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3 Nanocrystals

In this study, methylammonium lead iodide (MAPbI 3 ) perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) offer desirable optoelectronic properties with prospective utility in photovoltaics, lasers, and light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Structural rearrange-ments of MAPbI 3 in response to photoexcitation, such as lattice distortions and phase transitions, are of particular interest, as these engender long carrier lifetime and bolster carrier diffusion. Here, we use variable temperature X-ray diffraction (XRD) and synchrotron-based transient X-ray diffraction (TRXRD) to investigate lattice response following ultrafast optical excitation. MAPbI 3 NCs are found to slowly undergo a phase transition from the tetragonal to a pseudocubic phase over the course of 1 ns under 0.02-4.18 mJ/cm 2 fluence photoexcitation, with apparent nonthermal lattice distortions attributed to polaron formation. Lattice recovery exceeds time scales expected for both carrier recombination and thermal dissipation, indicating meta-stability likely due to the proximal phase transition, with symmetry-breaking along equatorial and axial directions. These findings are relevant for fundamental understanding and applications of structure-function properties.

Giant Increase of Hardness in Silicon Carbide by Metastable Single Layer Diamond-Like Coating

Silicon carbide (SiC) is one of the hardest known materials. Its exceptional mechanical properties combined with its high thermal conductivity make it a very attractive material for a variety of technological applications. Recently, it was discovered that two-layer epitaxial graphene films on SiC can undergo a pressure activated phase transition into a sp3 diamene structure at room temperature. Here, we show that epitaxial graphene films grown on SiC can increase the hardness of SiC up to 100% at low loads (up to 900 µN), and up to 30% at high loads (10 mN). By using a Berkovich diamond indenter and nanoindentation experiments, we demonstrate that the 30% increase in hardness is present even for indentations depths of 175 nm, almost three hundred times larger than the graphene film thickness. The experiments also show that the yield point of SiC increases up to 77% when the SiC surface is coated with epitaxial graphene. These improved mechanical properties are explained with the formation of diamene under the indenter’s pressure.
