Pressure broadening of NO2, CF2Cl2, HDO and HOOH by O2 and N2 in the millimeter wave region

The pressure-broadening coefficients of four molecules of atmospheric significance (NO2, CF2Cl2, HDO and HOOH) have been measured in the millimeter wave region. For each species, two transitions near 230 GHz were broadened by both N2 and O2, for a total of 16 different pressure-broadening measurements. Intercomparisons among the results of these measurements, as well as recent more extensive measurements on HNO3, are considered.

Millimeter-wave Imaging Radiometer (MIR) data processing and development of water vapor retrieval algorithms

This document describes the progress of the task of the Millimeter-wave Imaging Radiometer (MIR) data processing and the development of water vapor retrieval algorithms, for the second six-month performing period. Aircraft MIR data from two 1995 field experiments were collected and processed with a revised data processing software. Two revised versions of water vapor retrieval algorithm were developed, one for the execution of retrieval on a supercomputer platform, and one for using pressure as the vertical coordinate. Two implementations of incorporating products from other sensors into the water vapor retrieval system, one from the Special Sensor Microwave Imager (SSM/I), the other from the High-resolution Interferometer Sounder (HIS). Water vapor retrievals were performed for both airborne MIR data and spaceborne SSM/T-2 data, during field experiments of TOGA/COARE, CAMEX-1, and CAMEX-2. The climatology of water vapor during TOGA/COARE was examined by SSM/T-2 soundings and conventional rawinsonde.

Doped-channel heterojunction structures for millimeter-wave discrete devices and MMICs

AlGaAs/InGaAs/GaAs-type heterostructures with one or two channels have been used to fabricate both discrete devices and monolithic amplifiers for millimeter-wave operation. The authors report that 0.25-micron x 50-micron discrete devices delivered a power density of 1 W/mm with 2.9-dB gain and 25 percent efficiency at 60 GHz. A 100-micron monolithic single-stage amplifier demonstrated a record 40 percent efficiency at 32 GHz, and a two-stage monolithic amplifier achieved a record 31.3 percent efficiency with 72-mW power and 13-dB gain at 32 GHz.

Retrieval methods for ground-based millimeter-wave measurements for the network for the detection of stratospheric change

The fundamental objective is to determine the information available in ground-based millimeter-wave measurements of stratospheric constituent profiles, to identify the optimum method of retrieving this profile information, and to characterize the errors in the final result. A secondary objective is to produce retrieval software for operational use with Network for the Detection of Stratospheric Change (NDSC) measurements of O3, H2O, ClO, and perhaps N2O. Tests were performed on existing ozone retrieval programs in support of ongoing NDSC field measurements. The results show that if random spectral errors and retrieval bias errors are considered, accuracy of the retrieved profile is about 5 percent from 20-50 km, and about 10 percent from 50-60 km.

Multi-Band Multi-Tone Tunable Millimeter-Wave Frequency Synthesizer For Satellite Beacon Transmitter

This paper presents the design and test results of a multi-band multi-tone tunable millimeter-wave frequency synthesizer, based on a solid-state frequency comb generator. The intended application of the synthesizer is in a satellite beacon transmitter for radio wave propagation studies at K-band (18 to 26.5 GHz), Q-band (37 to 42 GHz), and E-band (71 to 76 GHz). In addition, the architecture for a compact beacon transmitter, which includes the multi-tone synthesizer, polarizer, horn antenna, and power/control electronics, has been investigated for a notional space-to-ground radio wave propagation experiment payload on a small satellite. The above studies would enable the design of robust high throughput multi-Gbps data rate future space-to-ground satellite communication links.

Millimeter wave transmission systems and related devices

A survey was made of the state-of-the-art in millimeter (20 GHz to 300 GHz) wave transmission systems and related devices. The survey includes summaries of analytical studies and theoretical results that were obtained for various transmission line structures. This material was supplemented by further analysis where appropriate. The transmission line structures are evaluated in terms of electrical performance, ease of manufacture, usefulness for building other devices and compatibility with solid state devices. Descriptions of waveguide transmission lines which have commonly been used in the microwave frequency range are provided along with special attention given to the problems that these guides face when their use is extended into the millimeter wave range. Also, guides which have been introduced specifically to satisfy the requirements of millimeter wave transmission are discussed in detail.

A millimeter-wave anisotropy experiment (MAX) to search for anisotropy in the cosmic background radiation on medium angular scales

We report preliminary results from two balloon flights of a millimeter-wave telescope designed to measure anisotropy in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) on angular scales from 0.3 to 3 degrees. The receiver used in the first flight, in November 1989, was a dichroic, He-3-cooled bolometric photometer with passbands centered at 3, 6, 9, and 12/cm. The second flight, in July 1990, employed improved bolometric detectors. The 3/cm band was removed in order to increase the efficiency of the remaining bands. Preliminary analysis of the data gives a factor of 3 improvement in sensitivity over the first flight in the 6/cm band. Future plans include a new receiver to provide an additional factor of 5 improvement in sensitivity and a new balloon-borne telescope which is optimized for low-background bolometric detectors at millimeter wavelengths.

Millimeter-wave pseudomorphic HEMT MMIC phased array components for space communications

Recent advances in pseudomorphic HEMT MMIC (PMHEMT/MMIC) technology have made it the preferred candidate for high performance millimeter-wave components for phased array applications. This paper describes the development of PMHEMT/MMIC components at Ka-band and V-band. Specifically, the following PMHEMT/MMIC components will be described: power amplifiers at Ka-band; power amplifiers at V-band; and four-bit phase shifters at V-band. For the Ka-band amplifier, 125 mW output power with 5.5 dB gain and 21 percent power added efficiency at 2 dB compression point has been achieved. For the V-band amplifier, 112 mW output power with 6 dB gain and 26 percent power added efficiency has been achieved. And, for the V-band phase shifter, four-bit (45 deg steps) phase shifters with less than 8 dB insertion loss from 61 GHz to 63 GHz will be described.

Considerations for millimeter wave printed antennas

Calculated data are presented on the performance of printed antenna elements on substrates which may be electrically thick, as would be the case for printed antennas at millimeter wave frequencies. Printed dipoles and microstrip patch antennas on polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), quartz, and gallium arsenide substrates are considered. Data are given for resonant length, resonant resistance, bandwidth, loss due to surface waves, loss due to dielectric heating, and mutual coupling. Also presented is an optimization procedure for maximizing or minimizing power launched into surface waves from a multielement printed antenna array. The data are calculated by a moment method solution.

Millimeter-wave diode-grid frequency doubler

Monolithic diode grids were fabricated on 2-cm square gallium-arsenide wafers in a proof-of-principle test of a quasi-optical varactor millimeter-wave frequency multiplier array concept. An equivalent circuit model based on a transmission-line analysis of plane wave illumination was applied to predict the array performance. The doubler experiments were performed under far-field illumination conditions. A second-harmonic conversion efficiency of 9.5 percent and output powers of 0.5 W were achieved at 66 GHz when the diode grid was pumped with a pulsed source at 33 GHz. This grid had 760 Schottky-barrier varactor diodes. The average series resistance was 27 ohms, the minimum capacitance was 18 fF at a reverse breakdown voltage of -3 V. The measurements indicate that the diode grid is a feasible device for generating watt-level powers at millimeter frequencies and that substantial improvement is possible by improving the diode breakdown voltage.

Millimeter wave attenuation prediction using a piecewise uniform rain rate model

A piecewise uniform rain rate distribution model is introduced as a quasi-physical model of real rain along earth-space millimeter wave propagation paths. It permits calculation of the total attenuation from specific attenuation in a simple fashion. The model predications are verified by comparison with direct attenuation measurements for several frequencies, elevation angles, and locations. Also, coupled with the Rice-Holmberg rain rate model, attenuation statistics are predicated from rainfall accumulation data.

A model-based approach for detection of objects in low resolution passive-millimeter wave images

We describe a model-based vision system to assist pilots in landing maneuvers under restricted visibility conditions. The system was designed to analyze image sequences obtained from a Passive Millimeter Wave (PMMW) imaging system mounted on the aircraft to delineate runways/taxiways, buildings, and other objects on or near runways. PMMW sensors have good response in a foggy atmosphere; but, their spatial resolution is very low. However, additional data such as airport model and approximate position and orientation of aircraft are available. We exploit these data to guide our model-based system to locate objects in the low resolution image and generate warning signals to alert the pilots. We also derive analytical expressions for the accuracy of the camera position estimate obtained by detecting the position of known objects in the image.
