Photo-exfoliation of MoS 2 quantum dots from nanosheets: an in-situ transmission electron microscopy study

Fabrication of transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) quantum dots (QDs) is complex and requires submerging of powders in binary solvents and the constant tuning of wavelength and pulsed frequency of light to achieve a desired reaction. Here,iInstead of liquid state photoexfoliation, we utilize infrared laser irradiation of free-standing MoS 2 flakes in transmission electron microscope (TEM) to achieve solid-state multi-level photoexfoliation of QDs. By investigating the steps involved in photochemical reaction between the surface of MoS 2 and the laser beam, we gain insight into each step of the photoexfoliation mechanism and observe high yield production of QDs, led by an inhomogeneous crystalline size distribution. Additionally, by using a laser with a lower energy than the indirect optical transition of bulk MoS 2 , we conclude that the underlying phenomena behind the photoexfoliation is from multi-photon absorption achieved at high optical outputs from the laser source. These findings provide an environmentally friendly synthesis method to fabricate QDs for potential applications in biomedicine, optoelectronics, and fluorescence sensing.

Nanomanufacturing of Graphene Nanosheets Through Hole Engineering

Facile and scalable fabrication of highly dense and high quality graphene films and articles is extremely attractive for a range of electronic and mechanical applications. Pristine, high quality graphene with its inherent impermeability poses challenges in fabricating dense films and thick parts with high electrical conductivity due to the difficulty in removing trapped air and/or solvents used in various fabrication methods. To overcome this deficiency, nano-holes were intentionally created in pristine graphene (“holey graphene”) with an average diameter of approximately 15 nm. The holes serve as pathways for the rapid removal of gases or liquids and enable the fabrication of dense holey graphene nanostructures. Subsequently, a high temperature process is applied to effectively repair the nano-holes and recover the high quality graphene conjugated network. Through the creation and repair of the nano-holes, dense graphene articles were created that exhibited an ultrahigh conductivity of 2209 S/cm and a high carrier mobility of 673 cm2V-1s-1. This unique processing methodology enables the facile and scalable fabrication of high quality graphene constructs for a variety of applications.

Magnesium Todorokite: Influence of Morphology on Electrochemistry in Lithium, Sodium and Magnesium Based Batteries

Samples of Mg-todorokite with mixed nanosheet & nanowire (referred to as nanosheets for the sake of simplicity) and pure nanowire morphology were prepared to probe the morphological impact on battery relevant electrochemistry. The samples had similar physicochemical properties where the Mg-todorokite nanosheets had a composition of Mg 0.20 MnO 2 with a crystallite size of 9 nm and water content of 0.29 moles of H 2 O per formula unit, while the nanowires had a composition of Mg 0.19 MnO 2 with a crystallite size of 14 nm and water content of 0.28. The electrochemistry of the Mg-todorokite materials was evaluated using cyclic voltammetry, galvanostatic cycling, and rate capability testing. The Mg-todorokite nanosheets showed higher discharge capacity than the nanowires in lithium, sodium and magnesium-based electrolytes. Notably, the nanowire materials exhibited excellent cycling stability compared to the nanosheets in lithium and sodium-based batteries. Finally, x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) of lithiated samples suggests that Mn in the nanosheet containing material was more highly reduced to Mn 3+ after the 1st full discharge explaining the higher initial capacities observed. However, a MnO-like structural distortion was observed after extended cycling in the nanosheet material consistent with its poorer capacity retention.

Highly efficient removal and sequestration of Cr(VI) in confined MoS 2 interlayer Nanochannels: Performance and mechanism

Environmental contamination by Cr(VI) is of particular concern because of its severe toxicity and high mobility. In this study, we employed two-dimensional MoS 2 nanosheets in the removal of Cr(VI), with an emphasis on revealing the removal mechanisms, and how the compositional and structural uniqueness of 2D MoS 2 nanomaterials intrinsically impact the Cr removal efficiency. Through batch experiments with dispersed nanosheets, we found that MoS 2 nanosheets exhibited a high Cr(VI) removal capacity at ~1100 mg/g via a phase-dependent mechanism. Particularly, the 1T polymorph in the MoS 2 nanosheets removed Cr(VI) through a redox-reaction mechanism, which was different from the adsorptive removal of Cr(VI) by MoS 2 reported previously, highlighting the compositional effects on the removal mechanism and performance. More importantly, the reduced product Cr(III) was concurrently removed via precipitation and adsorption onto the MoS 2 nanosheets, which could avoid the additional pH-elevation step that is typically needed in the conventional treatment. The unique 2D flake-like structure of MoS 2 nanosheets enabled the formation of aligned and ion-accessible nanochannels, where Cr(VI) species were accommodated, reduced and sequestered. The irreversible shrinking of the nanochannels under drying modified the interior of the layer-stacked structure into confined compartments preventing the release and re-oxidation of the immobilized Cr(III). In conclusion, the compiled results highlight the effects of MoS 2 composition and structure on the Cr removal efficiency and mechanism, which has substantial implications on future studies tailoring these unique features of 2D nanomaterials for various remediation scenarios.

Surface Functionalization of Black Phosphorus with Nitrenes: Identification of P=N Bonds Using Isotopic Labeling

Abstract: Surface functionalization of two-dimensional crystals is a key path to tuning their intrinsic physical and chemical properties. However, synthetic protocols and experimental strategies to directly probe chemical bonding in modified surfaces are scarce. Introduced here is a mild, surface-specific protocol for the surface functionalization of few-layer black phosphorus nanosheets using a family of photolytically generated nitrenes (RN) from the corresponding azides. By embedding spectroscopic tags in the organic backbone, a multitude of characterization techniques are employed to investigate in detail the chemical structure of the modified nanosheets, including vibrational (infrared, Raman), Xray (emission, photoelectron), CPMAS NMR, and UV-vis spectroscopy. To directly probe the functional groups introduced on the surface, R fragments were selected such that in conjunction with vibrational spectroscopy, 15N-labeling experiments, and DFT methods, diagnostic P=N vibrational modes indicative of iminophosphorane units on the nanosheet surface could be conclusively identified.

Highly Bright and Photostable Two-Dimensional Nanomaterials Assembled from Sequence-Defined Peptoids

Free-standing two-dimensional (2D) organic nanomaterials are highly attractive for biological applications because of their unique structural properties and high biocompatibility. Herein, we designed and synthesized a new class of highly bright and photostable membrane-mimetic 2D nanosheets from sequence-defined peptoids. These nanosheets exhibited the high quantum yield and photostability as a result of the precise placement and ordering of dansyl dye molecules within crystalline nanosheets. We further showed the use of these nanosheets as biocompatible and programmable probes for live cell imaging and cell labeling. Furthermore, by programing these nanosheets with different surface charges, we achieved the enhanced lysosome escape of these nanosheets, showing their great potential as nanocarriers for the efficient intracellular delivery of macromolecular drugs.

To Substitute Rather Than Intercalate: Chimie douce Approach to Induce Ferromagnetism in Metastable Pt 0.8 M 0.2 Se 2 ( M = Cr, Co, Ni)

Two-dimensional (2D) magnetic materials with exotic magnetic properties have garnered significant interest due to their potential applications in spintronics and data storage technologies. However, the limited availability of intrinsic 2D magnetic materials has driven efforts to induce and manipulate magnetism in otherwise nonmagnetic 2D systems through approaches such as chemical intercalation, defect engineering, and substitutional doping. Herein, we present a facile, chimie douce method for incorporating 3d transition metals (Cr, Co, and Ni) into the nonmagnetic PtSe 2 sublattice. This synthetic approach enables control over layer thickness of Pt 1–x M x Se 2 (M = Cr, Co, Ni) nanosheets by varying the M identity and annealing conditions. Comprehensive scattering and spectroscopic characterizations confirm the successful and homogeneous substitution of M atoms at the Pt site, rather than intercalation, and reveal a strong correlation between nanosheet thickness and the identity of the substituting metal. High-temperature annealing of the nanosheets promotes an irreversible transformation toward the bulk phase, allowing for detailed characterization of structural and magnetic properties. A case study of Pt 0.8 Cr 0.2 Se 2 reveals that nanosheet thickness plays a critical role in modulating local magnetic interactions. While Cr atoms in the as-synthesized few-layers-thick nanosheets exhibit predominantly short-range antiferromagnetic interactions, the emergence of short-range ferromagnetic exchange is revealed in the bulk material. Detailed ac susceptibility and remanent magnetization measurements further demonstrate that bulk Pt 0.8 Cr 0.2 Se 2 adopts a frustrated magnetic ground state with clear signatures of ferromagnetic cluster-glass behavior. The systematic investigation presented herein establishes a clear and robust protocol for the synthesis and in-depth characterization of 2D transition-metal-substituted PtSe2 materials with varying layer thickness and paves a path toward their realization in spintronic and magnetic device applications.

Keratin-derived functional carbon with superior charge storage and transport for high-performance supercapacitors

In this work, we report a scalable method to synthesize hierarchically porous, hetero-atom doped activated carbon nanosheet from waste biomass-human hair, and demonstrates the use of this carbon as an ultra-high performance electrode material for supercapacitor applications. Microscopic analyses reveal that sheet size ranges from 50 to 200 nm having a thickness of 15–27 nm. As-synthesized, carbon nanosheets possess a hierarchical porous structure having a specific surface area of 1548 m 2 g -1 . Heteroatom concentration (nitrogen, oxygen, and sulfur) of around 25% is confirmed from XPS analysis. Therefore, the novel interconnected hierarchical porous nanosheets structure enables fast adsorption and transportation of ions during electrochemical processes. Also, the abundant chemically available electroactive heteroatom species in the material enhance the wettability of ions and contribute to pseudocapacitance. The electrochemical analyses through cyclic voltammetry and galvanostatic charge-discharge measurements in 6 M KOH reveal the quasi-EDLC behavior of the activated carbons due to the presence of heteroatoms. A reprensentative KOH activated carbon shows an excellent specific capacitance value of 999 F g -1 at a current density of 1 A g -1 . Furthermore, the symmetrically assembled two-electrode device also delivers a maximum energy density of 32 W h Kg -1 at a power density of 325 W Kg -1 . In addition, excellent cyclic stability of 98% capacitance retention is observed after 10,000 continuous GCD cycles even at a high current density of 5 A g -1 . Symmetric flexible supercapacitor device using KOH-PVA-K3FeCN6 as redox gel polymer electrolyte shows a synergistic specific capacitance of 145 mF cm -1 at a current density of 0.8 mA cm -1 exhibiting very less deviation in bending mode. Therefore, this waste biomass derived heteroatom doped hierarchical porous carbon nanosheets can be a promising material for cost-effective high- performance supercapacitor.

Stable yet hydrophilic graphene oxide nanomembranes by zwitterionic reduction for dye desalination

Holey graphene oxide (HGO) nanosheets have emerged as a promising membrane platform for dye desalination, and they must be reduced to enhance hydrophobicity and stability for long-term underwater operation, which usually decreases water and salt permeance. Herein, we develop a facile method to stabilize HGO nanosheets while retaining their hydrophilicity by reducing them with sulfobetaine amine (SBAm, a superhydrophilic zwitterion), achieving high water and salt permeance and a high salt/dye separation factor. Specifically, HGO nanosheets react with SBAm via an amine-epoxide reaction, rendering reduced HGO nanosheets containing superhydrophilic zwitterions. The effects of in-plane pores, zwitterion content, and layer thickness on the membrane chemistry, structure, and salt/dye separation properties of the SBAm-reduced HGOs (SHGOs) are thoroughly examined. The membrane achieves a Na 2 SO 4 /Direct red separation factor of up to 850, surpassing the state-of-the-art GO membranes. Moreover, hollow fiber membrane modules based on SHGOs are fabricated and exhibit stable performance in multi-cycle tests over 100 h of operation with mixed dye-salt solutions, demonstrating the scalability of our approach and its potential for practical applications.

W-induced morphological modification of NiFe layered double hydroxides as efficient electrocatalysts for overall water splitting

Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) are one of the most efficient electrocatalysts for water splitting due to their nanosheet features and compositional flexibilities. This work explored the impact of W precursor concentration (0 ~ 10 mM) on LDH morphologies and performance in hydrogen production. Using an electrodeposition W-doping process, W-induced NiFe LDHs (NiFeW-LDHs) were in-situ grown on carbon fiber papers for water splitting. A performance peak was found at a W doping of 5 mM with well-aligned nanosheets, which not only boosted the charge transfer ability and gas evolution but also offered more than a four-fold electrochemical surface area increase compared to film-like NiFe hydroxides. The NiFeW-LDHs exhibited remarkable performance compared to NiFe hydroxides, showing decreased overpotentials of 31 mV and 114 mV for the oxygen evolution reactions (OERs) and hydrogen evolution reactions (HERs) at 10 mA/cm 2 and -10 mA/cm 2 , respectively, in alkaline media. The performance enhancement at 5 mM W-doping was linked to the well-aligned NiFeW-LDH nanosheets; smaller, less-textured nanosheets were observed with lower or higher W precursor concentrations (2.5 mM or >7.5 mM), leading to inferior OER and HER performances. Hence, an appropriate W doping is crucial to generating the morphologies that contribute to the higher performance of NiFeW-LDHs.
