Modeling of outgassing and matrix decomposition in carbon-phenolic composites

A new release rate equation to model the phase change of water to steam in composite materials was derived from the theory of molecular diffusion and equilibrium moisture concentration. The new model is dependent on internal pressure, the microstructure of the voids and channels in the composite materials, and the diffusion properties of the matrix material. Hence, it is more fundamental and accurate than the empirical Arrhenius rate equation currently in use. The model was mathematically formalized and integrated into the thermostructural analysis code CHAR. Parametric studies on variation of several parameters have been done. Comparisons to Arrhenius and straight-line models show that the new model produces physically realistic results under all conditions.

Modeling of outgassing and matrix decomposition in carbon-phenolic composites

Work done in the period Jan. - June 1994 is summarized. Two threads of research have been followed. First, the thermodynamics approach was used to model the chemical and mechanical responses of composites exposed to high temperatures. The thermodynamics approach lends itself easily to the usage of variational principles. This thermodynamic-variational approach has been applied to the transpiration cooling problem. The second thread is the development of a better algorithm to solve the governing equations resulting from the modeling. Explicit finite difference method is explored for solving the governing nonlinear, partial differential equations. The method allows detailed material models to be included and solution on massively parallel supercomputers. To demonstrate the feasibility of the explicit scheme in solving nonlinear partial differential equations, a transpiration cooling problem was solved. Some interesting transient behaviors were captured such as stress waves and small spatial oscillations of transient pressure distribution.

Outgassing Measurements for Three Materials, Combined with Vacuum Ultraviolet Radiation Illumination of the Volatile Condensable Materials

The photolysis of three organic materials, by vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) radiation, has been quantified using 15-MHz temperature-controlled quartz microbalances (TQCM's). The rate at which molecular species, released from the individual samples, condensed on two TQCM s was measured for periods of up to 139.9-hours. The individual samples were heated in an effusion cell and the emitted molecular species collected on a pair of TQCM's which were maintained at -40 degrees Celsius. At several points during the deposition measurement, the deposition surface of one TQCM was illuminated by a 30 Watt deuterium lamp, and the loss of material from that surface was observed. V W illumination of the TQCM, concurrent with condensation, reduced the rate that material was lost from the deposition surface. These measurements present a contrasting picture of molecular deposition, in the presence of VUV, to that presented by other investigators who observed an enhanced rate of molecular deposition, when the deposition surface was illuminated by VUV.

Reduced Organic Outgassing in the NASA Osiris-Rex and Hayabusa2 Curation Facility by Careful Selection and Implementation of Cleanroom Construction Materials

In October 2021, NASA Johnson Space Center (JSC) Astromaterials Acquisition and Cu-ration Office in JSC bldg. 31 completed construction and commissioning of the OSIRIS-REx and Hayabusa2cleanroom laboratory suites along with new precision cleaning and advanced curation laboratories: •OSIRIS-REx Curation Cleanroom: ISO Class 5•Hayabusa2 Curation Cleanroom: ISO Class 5•Final Precision Cleaning Cleanroom: ISO Class 5•Advanced Precision Cleaning Cleanroom: ISO Class 6•PreClean Precision Cleaning Cleanroom: ISO Class 6•Advanced Curation Cleanroom: ISO Class 7The new curation facilities are designed for initial receiving, basic characterization, curation processing, and preliminary examination of carbonaceous asteroidal material. The facilities are also designed to enable long-term pristine sample storage to preserve the scientific integrity of each sample to enable decades of future re-search by the international science community. The scientific study of organics in general is critical for both missions. The OSIRIS-REx mission executed a stringent contamination control plan [1] where all sample hardware at time of sample acquisition would be at Level 100 A/2 per IEST-STD-CC1246D (non-volatile residue (NVR) < 500 ng/cm2). In addition, the mission imposed a requirement of <180 ng/cm2 for amino acids (and hydrazine) [1]. Given these mission requirements, long-term storage preservation requirements, and information from the Organic Contamination Baseline Study at JSC [2], the JSC Curation team decided to carefully select cleanroom construction materials that would not hinder the scientific search for amino acids and the study of organics in the samples [3].

Volatile Composition and Outgassing in C/2018 Y1 (Iwamoto): Extending Limits for High-Resolution Infrared Cometary Spectroscopy between 2.8 and 5.0 µm

We used the powerful high spectral resolution cross-dispersed facility spectrograph, iSHELL, at the NASAInfrared Telescope Facility(IRTF)to observe C/2018 Y1(Iwamoto), a long-period comet from the Oort cloud. We report production rates for water and eight other parent molecules(native ices),C2H6, CO, CH4,H2CO,CH3OH, HCN, NH3, and C2H2, on three preperihelion UT dates, 2019 January 13 and(near perihelion)February4–5. We present abundance ratios relative to both C2H6(a nonpolar molecule)and H2O(a polar molecule), thereby providing a more complete picture of the parent volatile composition of C/2018 Y1 and potential associations of ices in its nucleus. Overall, the measured spatial distributions for polar molecules(in particular, H2O and CH3OH)were broader, exhibiting more complex structure compared with nonpolar or weakly polar species(CH4,C2H6, andCO). Our January 13 results permitted quantitatively assessing the significant improvement in sensitivity delivered by iSHELL compared with previous capabilities at the IRTF. The efficient spectral coverage of iSHELL plus the favorable geocentric Doppler shift of C/2018 Y1 allowed for measuring>50% of CH4ν3-band emission intensity on both January 13 and February 5. Compositionally, compared to their respective mean abundances among comets from the Oort cloud, C2H6and CH3OH were enriched, CH4and HCN were near normal, and all other species were depleted. The abundance ratio CH3OH/C2H6was higher by 45%±8% on January 13 versusFebruary 5, whereas CH4/C2H6was unchanged within the uncertainty, suggesting nonhomogeneous composition among regions of the nucleus dominating activity on these dates
