Production of muonic kaon atoms at high-energy colliders

We develop a framework for the formation of exotic muonic kaon atoms ($K\mu$) in semileptonic $D^{0}$ decays, using the effective weak Hamiltonian, a helicity-based treatment of the leptonic current, and a nonrelativistic bound-state projection. The resulting branching ratio, $\mathrm{BR}(D^{0}\!\to(K\mu )\nu_{\mu})=2.29\times10^{-10}$, is implemented in a ROOT-based code to estimate yields at RHIC, LHC, and STCF. We show quantitatively that $K\mu$ atoms—also produced through coalescence in the quark--gluon plasma (QGP)—provide a sensitive probe of low-momentum primordial muons and early-time electromagnetic radiation, offering complementary constraints in an otherwise unexplored phase space for thermal dilepton and photon emission. Newly estimated dissociation cross sections in detector material indicate that secondary‑vertex reconstruction should be experimentally feasible, allowing clean experimental identification of the atoms. Projected yields from QGP coalescence in LHC and RHIC heavy-ion collisions, and from $D^{0}$ decays in LHC high-luminosity $p+p$ collisions indicate that the first observation of $K\mu$ atoms is within reach. Deciphering yield modification of hadron-triggered semi-inclusive recoil jets in heavy-ion collisions

Jet quenching is recognized as critical evidence for the existence of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) and serves as an essential probe to study its transport properties. Measurements of hadron-triggered semi-inclusive recoil jets have gained popularity due to its capability to probe jets over an extended phase space at low transverse momenta (p T ) and large radii. Recent ALICE measurements showed that the I AA , yield ratio of recoil jets between heavy-ion and p+p collisions, rises with jet p T and exceeds unity at high p T , contradicting conventional expectations that jet quenching should result in I AA values less than one. In this contribution, we re-examine the surface bias and study the effects of energy losses for both trigger hadrons and recoil jets on I AA , employing the Linear Boltzmann Transport (LBT) model to simulate jet-medium interactions. Our findings suggest that a large portion of hadrons used for the triggers undergoes substantial energy loss, despite surface bias. In particular, the energy loss of the trigger hadrons elevates the I AA baseline, corresponding to the case of no energy loss for recoil jets, to be greatly larger than unity. This enhancement of the baseline implies that the measured I AA values being larger than unity could still signal jet quenching.

b b ¯ kinematic correlations in cold nuclear matter

Background: The LHCb Collaboration has studied a number of kinematic correlations between B -hadron pairs through their subsequent decays to J / ψ pairs in p + p collisions at 7 and 8 TeV for four minimum values of the J / ψ p T . Purpose: In this work, these measurements are compared to calculations of b b ¯ pairs and their hadronization and inclusive decays to J / ψ J / ψ are compared to the same observables. Potential cold matter effects on the b b ¯ pair observables are discussed to determine which are most likely to provide insights about the system and why. Methods: The calculations, employing the exclusive HVQMNR code, assume the same intrinsic k T -broadening and fragmentation as in prior work. The pair distributions presented by LHCb are calculated in this approach, both for the parent b b ¯ and the J / ψ J / ψ pairs produced in their decays. The sensitivity of the results to the intrinsic k T broadening is shown. The theoretical uncertainties due to the b quark mass and scale variations on both the initial b b ¯ pairs and the resulting J / ψ pairs are also shown, as is the dependence of the results on the rapidity range of the measurement. Possible effects due to the presence of the nucleus are studied by increasing the size of the k T broadening and modifying the fragmentation function. Results: Good agreement with the LHCb data is found for all observables. The parent b b ¯ distributions are more sensitive to the k T broadening than are the final-state J / ψ pairs. Conclusions: Next-to-leading order calculations with k T broadening, as in prior work, can describe all correlated observables. Multiple measurements of correlated observables are sensitive to different nuclear effects which can help distinguish between them.

Minijet clustering algorithm using transverse-momentum seeds in high-energy nuclear collisions

We propose an algorithm to detect mini-jet clusters in high-energy nuclear collisions, by selecting a high-transverse-momentum (pT) particle as a seed and assigning a clustering radius (R) in the pseudorapidity and azimuthal-angle space. Our PYTHIA simulations for p+p collisions show that a scheme with a seeding p T of around 0.5 GeV/c and R of approximately 0.6 satisfactorily identifies mini-jet clusters. The correlation between clusters obtained in PYTHIA calculations using the algorithm exhibits the proper behavior of hard-scattering-like processes, suggesting its usefulness in isolating mini-jet-like clusters from non-hard-scattering soft processes when applied to actual nuclear-collision data, thereby allowing a closer examination of both the mini-jet and the soft mechanisms.

Electron-positron, parton-parton, and photon-photon production of τ -lepton pairs: Anomalous magnetic and electric dipole moments spin effects

Anomalous contributions to the electric and magnetic dipole moments of the τ lepton from new physics scenarios have brought renewed interest in the development of new charge-parity violating signatures in τ -pair production at Belle II energies, and also at higher energies of the Large Hadron Collider and the Future Circular Collider. In this paper, we discuss the effects of spin correlations, including transverse degrees of freedom, in the τ -pair production and decay. These studies include calculating analytical formulas, obtaining numerical results, and building semirealistic observables sensitive to the transverse spin correlations induced by the dipole moments of the τ lepton. The effects of such anomalous contributions to the dipole moments are introduced on top of precision simulations of e − e + → τ − τ + , q q ¯ → τ − τ + and γ γ → τ − τ + processes, involving multibody final states. The τ decays are simulated along with radiative corrections, in particular electroweak box contributions of W W and Z Z exchanges are taken into account. Respective extensions of the Standard Model amplitudes and the reweighting algorithms are implemented into the Monte Carlo, which is used to simulate τ -pair production in e − e + collisions, and the aupinner program, which is used to reweight events with τ pair produced in p p collisions. K*(892) 0 meson production in inelastic p+p interactions at 158 GeV/ c beam momentum measured by NA61/SHINEat the CERN SPS

The measurement of Κ*(892) 0 resonance production via its Κ⁺π⁻ decay mode in inelastic p+p collisions at beam momentum 158 Ge V/c (√ S ΝΝ = 17.3 Ge V) is presented. The data were recorded by the NA61/SHINE hadron spectrometer at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron. The template method was used to extract the K*(892) 0 signal and double-differential transverse momentum and rapidity spectra were obtained. The full phase-space mean multiplicity of K*(892) 0 mesons was found to be (78.44 ± 0.38(stat) ± 6.0(sys)) ∙ 10 -3 . The NA61/SHINE results are compared with the EPOS1.99 and Hadron Resonance Gas models as well as with world data from p+p and nucleus-nucleus collisions.

$\overline{\Sigma }^{\pm }$ production in $\text {pp}$ and $\text {p}{-}\text{Pb}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}} = 5.02$ TeV with ALICE

The transverse momentum spectra and integrated yields of anti-$Σ$ hyperons ($\overline{\Sigma}^{\pm}$) have been measured in and collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}} = 5.02$ TeV with the ALICE experiment. Measurements are performed via the newly accessed decay channel $\overline{\Sigma}^{\pm}$ → $\bar{\textrm{n}}π^±$. A new method of antineutron reconstruction with the PHOS electromagnetic spectrometer is developed and applied to this analysis. The p T spectra of $\overline{\Sigma}^{\pm}$ are measured in the range 0.5 < p T < 3 GeV/c and compared to predictions of the PYTHIA 8, DPMJET, PHOJET, EPOS LHC and EPOS4 models. The EPOS LHC and EPOS4 models provide the best descriptions of the measured spectra both in pp and p-Pb collisions, while models which do not account for multiparton interactions provide a considerably worse description at high p T . The total yields of $\overline{\Sigma }^{\pm }$ in both pp and p-Pb collisions are compared to predictions of the Thermal-FIST model and dynamical models PYTHIA 8, DPMJET, PHOJET, EPOS LHC and EPOS4. All models reproduce the total yields in both colliding systems within uncertainties. The nuclear modification factors R pPb for both $\overline{\Sigma}^{+}$ and $\overline{\Sigma}^{-}$ are evaluated and compared to those of protons, $Λ$ and $Ξ$ hyperons, and predictions of EPOS LHC and EPOS4 models. No deviations of R pPb for $\overline{\Sigma}^{\pm}$ from the model predictions or measurements for other hadrons are found within uncertainties.

Search for Higgs Boson Decays into a Z Boson and a Light Hadronically Decaying Resonance Using 13 TeV pp Collision Data from the ATLAS Detector

A search for Higgs boson decays into a Z boson and a light resonance in two-lepton plus jet events is performed, using a p p collision dataset with an integrated luminosity of 139 fb–1 collected at √ s = 13 TeV by the ATLAS experiment at the CERN LHC. The resonance considered is a light boson with a mass below 4 GeV from a possible extended scalar sector or a charmonium state. Multivariate discriminants are used for the event selection and for evaluating the mass of the light resonance. No excess of events above the expected background is found. Observed (expected) 95% confidence-level upper limits are set on the Higgs boson production cross section times branching fraction to a Z boson and the signal resonance, with values in the range 17–340 pb ($16^{+6}_{– 5}–320^{+130}_{–90}$ pb) for the different light spin-0 boson mass and branching fraction hypotheses, and with values of 110 and 100 pb ($100^{+40}_{–30}$ and $100^{+40}_{–30}$ pb ) for the $η_c$ and J/ψ hypotheses, respectively.

Search for Inelastic Dark Matter in Events with Two Displaced Muons and Missing Transverse Momentum in Proton-Proton Collisions at s = 13 TeV

A search for dark matter in events with a displaced nonresonant muon pair and missing transverse momentum is presented. The analysis is performed using an integrated luminosity of 138 fb − 1 of proton-proton ( p p ) collision data at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV produced by the LHC in 2016–2018. No significant excess over the predicted backgrounds is observed. Upper limits are set on the product of the inelastic dark matter production cross section σ ( p p → A ′ → χ 1 χ 2 ) and the decay branching fraction B ( χ 2 → χ 1 μ + μ − ) , where A ′ is a dark photon and χ 1 and χ 2 are states in the dark sector with near mass degeneracy. This is the first dedicated collider search for inelastic dark matter. © 2024 CERN, for the CMS Collaboration 2024 CERN

Enhanced Deuteron Coalescence Probability in Jets

The transverse-momentum ($p_T$) spectra and coalescence parameters $B_2$ of (anti)deuterons are measured in p-p collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ $\text{TeV}$ for the first time in and out of jets. In this measurement, the direction of the leading particle with the highest $p_T$ in the event ($p^{lead}_T > 5 GeV/c$) is used as an approximation for the jet axis. The event is consequently divided into three azimuthal regions, and the jet signal is obtained as the difference between the toward region, that contains jet fragmentation products in addition to the underlying event (UE), and the transverse region, which is dominated by the UE. The coalescence parameter in the jet is found to be approximately a factor of 10 larger than that in the underlying event. This experimental observation is consistent with the coalescence picture and can be attributed to the smaller average phase-space distance between nucleons in the jet cone as compared with the underlying event. The results presented in this Letter are compared to predictions from a simple nucleon coalescence model, where the phase-space distributions of nucleons are generated using pythia8 with the Monash 2013 tuning, and to predictions from a deuteron production model based on ordinary nuclear reactions with parametrized energy-dependent cross sections tuned on data. The latter model is implemented in pythia8.3. Both models reproduce the observed large difference between in-jet and out-of-jet coalescence parameters, although the almost flat trend of the $B^{Jet}_2$ is not reproduced by the models, which instead give a decreasing trend.

Symmetric-asymmetric collision comparison: Disentangling nuclear structure and subnucleonic structure effects for small system flow

Previous flow measurements in small collision systems were mostly based on highly asymmetric collisions (p+Pb, p+Au, d+Au, 3 He+Au), where both nuclear structure and subnucleonic fluctuations are important. Comparing these asymmetric systems with the newly available symmetric 16 O+ 16 O collisions at RHIC and LHC provides a unique opportunity to disentangle these two contributions. Using Glauber models incorporating both nucleon and quark-level substructure, we analyze multiplicity distributions and initial-state estimators: eccentricities ε n for anisotropic flow ν n and inverse transverse size d ⟂ for radial flow. We find that subnucleonic fluctuations impact O+O collisions differently from asymmetric systems, creating specific patterns in flow observables that enable disentangling the competing contributions. Such experimental comparisons will reduce uncertainties in the initial conditions and improve our understanding of the properties of the QGP-like medium produced in small systems.

Electroweak, QCD and flavour physics studies with ATLAS data from Run 2 of the LHC

A of precision measurements sensitive to electroweak, QCD and quark-flavour effects performed by the ATLAS Collaboration at the Large Hadron Collider is reported. The measurements are predominantly performed on proton–proton ( p p ) collision data recorded at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV taken from 2015 to 2018, with an integrated luminosity of up to 140 fb−1, with some results based on p p and Pb+Pb data recorded at lower nucleon centre-of-mass energies. The results cover a wide range of topics, from strong production of particles at low energies and the spectroscopy of hadrons to perturbative QCD with hadronic jets and electroweak and strong production of single and multiple vector bosons. They provide precise measurements of fundamental constants and stringent tests of the Standard Model with unprecedented precision and in energy ranges never explored before. They are also used to explore the proton structure and to perform model-independent searches for new physics.

Measurement of C P asymmetries in Λ b 0 → p h − decays

A search for C P violation in Λ b 0 → p K − and Λ b 0 → p π − decays is presented using the full Run 1 and Run 2 data samples of p p collisions collected with the LHCb detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb − 1 at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13 TeV. For the Run 2 data sample, the C P -violating asymmetries are measured to be A C P p K − = ( − 1.4 ± 0.7 ± 0.4 ) % and A C P p π − = ( 0.4 ± 0.9 ± 0.4 ) % , where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. Following significant improvements in the evaluation of systematic uncertainties compared to the previous LHCb measurement, the Run 1 dataset is reanalyzed to update the corresponding results. When combining the Run 2 and updated Run 1 measurements, the final results are found to be A C P p K − = ( − 1.1 ± 0.7 ± 0.4 ) % and A C P p π − = ( 0.2 ± 0.8 ± 0.4 ) % , constituting the most precise measurements of these asymmetries to date. © 2025 CERN, for the LHCb Collaboration 2025 CERN

Measurements of $W$ and $Z/γ^*$ cross sections and their ratios in $pp$ collisions at STAR

While the unpolarized parton distribution functions of the valence quarks ( d d and u u ) are well determined from DIS experiments, the sea quark counterparts, \bar{d} d ‾ and \bar{u} u ‾ , are much less constrained, in particular, near the valence region. Measurements of W^+/W^- W + / W − production ratio in pp p p collider experiments, such as the STAR experiment at RHIC, can probe the \bar{d}/\bar{u} d ‾ / u ‾ ratio at a large Q^2 Q 2 set by the W W mass. These proceedings will discuss recent results of W W and Z Z cross-section measurements using the STAR pp p p collision data at a center-of-mass energy of \sqrt{s} = 500/510\;\mathrm{GeV} s = 500 / 510 G e V collected in 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2017.

Determination of the parton distribution functions of the proton from ATLAS measurements of differential W ± and Z boson production in association with jets

This article presents a new set of proton parton distribution functions, AT-LASepWZVjet20, produced in an analysis at next-to-next-to-leading order in QCD. The new data sets considered are the measurements of W + and W - boson and Z boson production in association with jets in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 8TeV performed by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC with integrated luminosities of 20.2 fb -1 and 19.9 fb -1 , respectively. The analysis also considers the ATLAS measurements of differential W ± and Z boson production at $\sqrt{s}$ = 7TeV with an integrated luminosity of 4.6 fb -1 and deep-inelastic-scattering data from e ± p collisions at the HERA accelerator. An improved determination of the sea-quark densities at high Bjorken x is shown, while confirming a strange-quark density similar in size to the up- and down-sea-quark densities in the range x ≲ 0.02 found by previous ATLAS analyses.

Universality in the Near-Side Energy-Energy Correlator

We investigate the energy-energy correlator (EEC) of hadrons produced on the same side in e + e − annihilation or in leading jets in p p collisions. We observe a remarkable universality of the correlator. Using a nonperturbative transverse momentum dependent (TMD) fragmentation function to model the transition from the “free-hadron” region to the perturbative collinear region, we are able to describe the near-side shapes and peaks over a wide range of energy for both the e + e − annihilation and the p p jet substructure measurements in terms of just two parameters. We present further predictions for the ratio of the projected three-point energy correlator to the EEC. The excellent agreement between our calculations and the experimental data may provide new insights into the role of nonperturbative physics for EECs, and suggests the possibility of exploring nonperturbative TMDs using theoretical tools developed for the energy correlators. Intrinsic charm production of doubly charmed baryons: Collider vs. fixed-target

We report the LHCb Collaboration has measured the doubly charmed baryon, $\Xi^{++}_{cc} (ucc)$, through two different decay channels in $p + p$ collisions at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV. While they have performed similar searches for the doubly charmed baryon $\Xi^{+}_{cc} (dcc)$, it has not yet been observed by LHCb. However, the fixed-target experiment, SELEX, at Fermilab, reported the observation of the $\Xi^{+}_{cc}$ in two different decay channels with a 600 GeV charged hyperon beam. The beam was composed of an admixture of $π^{±}, p, \overline p $ components as well as the $Σ^–$ hyperon. Much discussion has arisen over the fact that the fixed-target observations have not been easily reproduced by the collider experiments at higher energies, where one might have expected the production rates to be much higher due to the orders of magnitude increase in the center of mass energy with LHCb.
