Scalable Asynchronous Domain Decomposition Solvers

We discuss how parallel implementations of linear iterative solvers generally alternate between phases of data exchange and phases of local computation. Increasingly large problem sizes and more heterogeneous compute architectures make load balancing and the design of low latency network interconnects that are able to satisfy the communication requirements of linear solvers very challenging tasks. In particular, global communication patterns such as inner products become increasingly limiting at scale. We explore the use of asynchronous communication based on one-sided Message Passing Interface primitives in the context of domain decomposition solvers. In particular, a scalable asynchronous two-level Schwarz method is presented. We discuss practical issues encountered in the development of a scalable solver and show experimental results obtained on a state-of-the-art supercomputer system that illustrate the benefits of asynchronous solvers in load balanced as well as load imbalanced scenarios. Using the novel method, we can observe speedups of up to four times over its classical synchronous equivalent.

Global-Address Networking (GASNet-1) Library

GASNet is a language-independent, networking middleware layer that provides network-independent, high-performance communication primitives including Remote Memory Access (RMA) and Active Messages (AM). It has been used to implement parallel programming models and libraries such as UPC, Co-Array Fortran, Titanium, Legion, Chapel, and many others. The interface is primarily intended as a compilation target and for use by runtime library writers (as opposed to end users), and the primary goals are high performance, interface portability, and expressiveness. GASNet stands for "Global-Address Space Networking".

Global-Address Space Networking for Exascale

GASNet-EX is a portable, open-source, high-performance communication library designed to efficiently support the networking requirements of Partitioned Global Address Space (PGAS) runtime systems and other alternative models in future exascale machines. The library is an evolution of the popular GASNet communication system, building upon over 15 years of lessons learned. Oineus v1.0

A library for multi-threaded computation of persistence diagrams. The algorithm for computing persistence diagrams in a lock-free manner was published in the 'Towards Lock-free Persistent Homology' (D. Morozov, A. Nigmetov, Brief Announcement: SPAA 2020); it scales better than the only other shared-memory parallel implementation of persistent homology computation PHAT. Library includes python bindings to compute persistence diagrams and their vectorizations for lower-star filtrations on grid data. It is intended to be used by scientists working on Topological Data Analysis and its applications in different areas.

LCA

The Locally Competitive Algorithm (LCA) is a dynamical sparse solver that uses only local computations, allowing for massively parallel implementations on compatible neuromorphic architectures such as Intel's Loihi research chip. In this invention, we show how unsupervised dictionary learning with spiking LCA can be implemented on GPUs and Intel's Loihi research chip.

Many-Body Adaptive Configuration Interaction Suite (MACIS) v0.1.0

The Many-Body Adaptive Configuration Interaction Suite (MACIS) is a modern C++ software infrastructure for the development of selected-configuration interaction (sCI) methods for the fermionic many-body problem in quantum chemistry and materials science. MACIS provides a high-performance, parallel implementation of the Adaptive Sampling Configuration Interaction (ASCI) method as related solvers such as self-consistent orbital optimization and the evaluation of excited states and spectral functions. Unlike existing sCI software, MACIS is developed as a modular software infrastructure which allows it to exist both as a standalone sCI solver and as a library to integrate into existing many-body codes. This modularity allows MACIS to be quickly extensible, including its integration with other sCI methods and high-performance solvers.

Extreme Scale Unstructured Adaptive CFD: From Multiphase Flow to Aerodynamic Flow Control

Understanding the flow of fluid, either liquid or gas, through and around solid bodies has challenged man since the dawn of scientific inquiry. Many of the great minds of science and math have progressively built up a hierarchy of fluid models. This report is concerned with the computational modeling of turbulent flow around aerodynamic bodies such as planes and wind turbines. In this case, viscous effects near the solid bodies create very thin boundary layers that yield highly anisotropic (gradients normal to the surface may be 10^6 times larger than gradients along the surface) solutions to the governing non-linear partial differential equations (PDE); the Navier-Stokes equations. Furthermore, turbulent flows develop extremely broad ranges of length and time scales. This disparity motivates the use of discretization methods capable of employing adaptivity and implicit time integration. The combination of these features (non-linear, anisotropy, adaptivity, andimplicit) dramatically raise the complexity of the discretization, posing large challenges to efficient scalable parallel implementation. However, through careful design, the more complex algorithms can provide great reductions in computational cost relative to simpler methods (e.g., Cartesian grids with explicit time integration) that are easier to mate efficiently to hardware. In this report, we not only describe our approach but we also address the fact that while complex algorithms may never be as efficient flop-for-flop as simple methods, in the important measure of science-per-core-hour, they can still win big by making complex features like adaptivity and implicit methods as efficient and scalable as possible.

Sierra/SD - Theory Manual

Sierra/SD provides a massively parallel implementation of structural dynamics finite element analysis, required for high fidelity, validated models used in modal, vibration, static and shock analysis of structural systems. This manual describes the theory behind many of the constructs in Sierra/SD. For a more detailed description of how to use Sierra/SD, we refer the reader to Sierra/SD, Users Notes. Many of the constructs in Sierra/SD are pulled directly from published material. Where possible, these materials are referenced herein. However, certain functions in Sierra/SD are specific to our implementation. We try to be far more complete in those areas. The theory manual was developed from several sources including general notes, a programmer_notes manual, the user's notes and of course the material in the open literature.
