Particle-acceleration by turbulent magnetohydrodynamic reconnection

Test particles in a two dimensional, turbulent MHD simulation are found to undergo significant acceleration. The magnetic field configuration is a periodic sheet pinch which undergoes reconnection. The test particles are trapped in the reconnection region for times of order an Alfven transit time in the large electric fields that characterize the turbulent reconnection process at the relatively large magnetic Reynolds number used in the simulation. The maximum speed attained by these particles is consistent with an analytic estimate which depends on the reconnection electric field, the Alfven speed, and the ratio of Larmor period to the Alfven transit time.

The stability of confined radio jets - The role of reflection modes

The linear stability of a confined radio jet is reinvestigated. The roles of both absolute (temporal) and convected (spatial) instability are considered, and it is demonstrated that the two are related through the group velocity. The dispersion relation is analyzed asymptotically for the fundamental and reflection modes. Numerical results are presented for pinching modes. A geometrical interpretation of the modes is presented in terms of the propagation angle and is visualized by contour plots of the pressure perturbation. A confined jet theta M = arc sine (1 + sq rt eta)/M, where eta is the ratio of the internal to the external gas density and M is the Mach number of the jet. The connection between these linear modes and the cross-shaped shock patterns which are seen in laboratory jets, and the implications of these calculations for the development of large-scale features in extragalactic radio jets, are discussed.

Magnetic flux ropes of Venus - A paradigm for helical magnetic structures in astrophysical systems

Theoretical model of the helical structures in the magnetic flux ropes of Venus are presented. The models are based on observations carried out by the Pioneer Venus Orbiter. The densities of the magnetic currents flowing parallel and perpendicular to the Venusian magnetic field are obtained and a 'helical kink' criterion is developed to evaluate the stability of the ropes with respect to pinch-related perturbations. The arbitrary transversal of a helical flux rope by a kink instability is shown in a drawing.

Laboratory experiments on reconnection in current sheets

Insights obtained from laboratory experiments concerning the reconnection of current sheets are discussed. Consideration is given to: the nonlocal characteristics of reconnection; the build-up of pinch current sheets; and impulsive flux transfer events. The application of the experimental results to present models of current sheet reconnection during solar flares is also discussed.

Remotely operable peristaltic pump

A peristaltic pump is disclosed which includes a roller assembly on which is mounted a series of pump rollers. As the roller assembly is rotated by a drive gear the pump rollers are driven in reverse rotation by means of a stationary ring gear and pump roller gears. An upper pressure shoe plate and a lower pressure shoe plate are positioned above sets of flexible tubing. The tubing is sandwiched between the pressure shoe plates and the pump rollers. A highly compact pump is provided having twice as many fluid channel lines as is conventional. The peristaltic pump device may be remotely operated by means of a rotary actuator which rotates a driving hub to move the shoe plates by means of eccentrically mounted links. The pressure shoe plates may be moved by the rotary actuator to a loaded position in which the fluid lines are pinched by the pump rollers and fluid is pumped to an unloaded position in which the fluid lines are maintained in an undeformed, uncrimped configuration so that no creases or crimps are set into the fluid lines during periods of prolonged nonuse.

High transconductance InGaAs/AlGaAs pseudomorphic modulation-doped field-effect transistors

Pseudomorphic In0.15Ga0.85As/A10.15Ga0.85As modulation-doped field effect transistors (MODFET's) exhibiting extremely good dc characteristics have been successfully fabricated. dc transconductance in these strained-layer structures of 270 mS/mm was measured for 1-micron gate, normally-on devices at 300 K. Maximum drain current levels are 290 mA/mm, with excellent pinch-off and saturation characteristics. The transconductance increased to 360 mS/mm at 77 K while no persistent photoconductivity or drain collapse was observed. Preliminary microwave results indicate a 300-K current gain cutoff frequency of about 20 GHz. These results are equivalent to the best GaAs/AlGaAs MODFET results and are due in part to the improved transport properties and carrier confinement in the InGaAs quantum well.

Turbulent relaxation to a force-free field-reversed state

The evolution of nonequilibrium initial conditions of an incompressible magnetohydrodynamic Z pinch is described by a three-dimensional, pseudospectral numerical code. Magnetohydrodynamic turbulence develops in the resistive, nonviscous magnetofluid, resulting in the selective decay of the energy relative to the magnetic helicity, at Lundquist numbers of only a few hundred. An interior force-free region grows with time and achieves spontaneous reversal of the toroidal magnetic field at the wall, without the necessity of an external electric field.

Double layers and circuits in astrophysics

A simple circuit is applied to the energizing of auroral particles, to solar flares, and to intergalactic double radio sources. Application to the heliospheric current systems leads to the prediction of two double layers on the Sun's axis which may give radiations detectable from Earth. Double layers in space should be classified as a new type of celestial object. It is suggested that X-ray and gamma-ray bursts may be due to exploding double layers (although annihilation is an alternative energy source). The way the most used textbooks in astrophysics treat concepts like double layers, critical velocity, pinch effects and circuits was studied. It is found that students using these textbooks remain essentially ignorant of even the existence of these, although some of the phenomena were discovered 50 yr ago.

Microwave performance of an optically controlled AlGaAs/GaAs high electron mobility transistor and GaAs MESFET

Direct current and also the microwave characteristics of optically illuminated AlGaAs/GaAs HEMT are experimentally measured for the first time and compared with that of GaAs MESFET. The results showed that the average increase in the gain is 2.89 dB under 1.7 nW/sq cm optical intensity at 0.83 microns. Further, the effect of illumination on S-parameters is more pronounced when the devices are biased close to pinch off. Novel applications of optically illuminated HEMT as a variable gain amplifier, high speed high frequency photo detector, and mixer are demonstrated.

Double layers and circuits in astrophysics

As the rate of energy release in a double layer with voltage delta V is P approx I delta V, a double layer must be treated as a part of a circuit which delivers the current I. As neither double layer nor circuit can be derived from magnetofluid models of a plasma, such models are useless for treating energy transfer by means of double layers. They must be replaced by particle models and circuit theory. A simple circuit is suggested which is applied to the energizing of auroral particles, to solar flares, and to intergalactic double radio sources. Application to the heliospheric current systems leads to the prediction of two double layers on the Sun's axis which may give radiations detectable from Earth. Double layers in space should be classified as a new type of celestial object (one example is the double radio sources). It is tentatively suggested in X-ray and Gamma-ray bursts may be due to exploding double layers (although annihilation is an alternative energy source). A study of how a number of the most used textbooks in astrophysics treat important concepts like double layers, critical velocity, pinch effects and circuits is made.

Modelling short channel mosfets for use in VLSI

In an investigation of metal oxide semiconductor field effect transistor (MOFSET) devices, a one-dimensional mathematical model of device dynamics was prepared, from which an accurate and computationally efficient drain current expression could be derived for subsequent parameter extraction. While a critical review revealed weaknesses in existing 1-D models (Pao-Sah, Pierret-Shields, Brews, and Van de Wiele), this new model in contrast was found to allow all the charge distributions to be continuous, to retain the inversion layer structure, and to include the contribution of current from the pinched-off part of the device. The model allows the source and drain to operate in different regimes. Numerical algorithms used for the evaluation of surface potentials in the various models are presented.

Turbulent magnetic reconnection

The results of two-dimensional spectral-method MHD simulations of the effect of turbulence on magnetic-reconnection processes are presented in extensive graphs and tables and characterized in detail. In a periodic sheet-pinch configuration, early-onset, persistent turbulence is found to occur when a low level of broadband fluctuations is introduced into the initial data. Features observed include small-scale unsteady coherent electric-current and vorticity structures, enhanced viscous and resistive dissipation, unsteady and spatially asymmetric fluid flow, large-scale and small-scale magnetic islands, multiple X points, large-amplitude electric-field fluctuations, and spectral characteristics indicating that the turbulence is broadband in both spatial directions and similar to homogeneous MHD turbulence. The importance of reconnection for studies of solar, magnetospheric, and laboratory plasmas in inhomogeneous magnetic fields is indicated.

Hyper-resistivity produced by tearing mode turbulence

Tearing mode turbulence produces a hyperresistivity or effective anomalous electron viscosity. The hyperresistivity is calculated for the mean magnetic field quasi-linearly, and for long-wavelength modes using the direct interaction approximation. The hyperresistivity accounts for current relaxation in reversed-field pinch experiments, and gives a magnetic fluctuation scaling of S to the -1/3. It causes enhanced tearing mode growth rates in the turbulent phase of tokamak disruptions. In astrophysics, it limits magnetic energy growth because of the dynamo effect, and may explain rapid reconnection phenomena such as solar flares.

A versatile and low order hybrid stress element for general shell geometry

A hybrid stress general shell element is developed based on the Hellinger-Reissner principle modified for relaxed element compatibility conditions. The element is based on a consistent first order thin shell theory with Love Kirchhoff hypotheses. It is of quadrilateral shape with only four corner nodes and five degrees of freedom per node. The geometry of the element is approximated through a bi-cubic polynomial surface patch. Numerical examples consist of torsion-loaded slit cylinder and pinched cylinder with open ends and rigid diaphragmed ends. Also, the representation of the rigid body motion is studied by series of parametric eigenvalue analysis of the stiffness matrix.

Compression of oceanic lithosphere - An analysis of intraplate deformation in the Central Indian Basin

The development of intraplate structure in the Central Indian Basin is examined using models in which deformation is due to flexural buckling and the hydrodynamic growth of instabilities. Comparison of the models reveal that in a strong viscous lithosphere, deformation of the layer occurs by flexural folding at a wavelength which corresponds to the flexural buckling theory; in a lithosphere of intermediate strength, the layer deforms by folding characterized by thickening which localizes beneath topographic heights; and in a relatively weak lithosphere, the layer incurs an even greater amount of localized thickening and deforms in the symmetric or pinch-and-swell mode by inverse boudinage. It is noted that the models in which the layer folds either flexurally or with periodic thickening correspond with observed depth distribution of seismicity in the Central Indian Basin and with experimental rock rheological data.
