Janus bottlebrush compatibilizers

Bottlebrush random copolymers (BRCPs), consisting of a random distribution of two homopolymer chains along a backbone, can segregate to the interface between two immiscible homopolymers. BRCPs undergo a reconfiguration, where each block segregates to one of the homopolymer phases, adopting a Janus-type structure, reducing the interfacial tension and promoting adhesion between the two homopolymers, thereby serving as a Janus bottlebrush copolymer (JBCP) compatibilizer. Here, we synthesized a series of JBCPs by copolymerizing deuterated or hydrogenated polystyrene (DPS/PS) and poly(tert-butyl acrylate) (PtBA) macromonomers using ruthenium benzylidene-initiated ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP). Subsequent acid-catalyzed hydrolysis converted the PtBA brushes to poly(acrylic acid) (PAA). The JBCPs were then placed at the interface between DPS/PS homopolymers and poly(2-vinyl pyridine) (P2VP) homopolymers, where the degree of polymerization of the backbone (N BB ) and the grafting density (GD) of the JBCPs were varied. Neutron reflectivity (NR) was used to determine the interfacial width and segmental density distributions (including PS homopolymer, PS block, PAA block and P2VP homopolymer) across the polymer-polymer interface. Our findings indicate that the star-like JBCP with N BB = 6 produces the largest interfacial broadening. Increasing N BB to 100 (rod-like shape) and 250 (worm-like shape) reduced the interfacial broadening due to a decrease in the interactions between blocks and homopolymers by stretching of blocks. Decreasing the GD from 100% to 80% at N BB = 100 caused an increase the interfacial width, yet further decreasing the GD to 50% and 20% reduced the interfacial width, as 80% of GD may efficiently increase the flexibility of blocks and promote interactions between homopolymers, while maintaining relatively high number of blocks attached to one molecule. The interfacial conformation of JBCPs was further translated into compatibilization efficiency. Thin film morphology studies showed that only the lower N BB values (N BB = 6 and N BB = 24) and the 80% GD of N BB = 100 had bicontinuous morphologies, due to a sufficient binding energy that arrested phase separation, supported by mechanical testing using asymmetric double cantilever beam (ADCB) tests. These provide fundamental insights into the assembly behavior of JBCPs compatibilizers at homopolymer interfaces, opening strategies for the design of new BCP compatibilizers.

Bottlebrush Block Copolymer Thin Films

The self-assembly of block copolymers (BCPs) in thin films is governed by interfacial interactions (enthalpy) between the blocks and interfaces (at both the substrate and the surface). Advantage can also be taken of entropy to control the polymer orientation. Here, we synthesized a series of bottlebrush block copolymers (BBCPs), with deuterated polystyrene (DPS) as the core block and poly(solketal acrylate) (PSA) as the corona block, where the backbone length (N BB) and grafting densities (GDs) were varied. The hydrophobic PSA block was converted to a hydrophilic poly(glyceryl acrylate) (PGA) block by solid-state hydrolysis, bringing the BBCP from a disordered state into an ordered state with a lamellar microdomain morphology. The orientation of the morphology as a function of distance from the interfaces was systematically investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM), interference microscopy, grazing-incidence small-angle X-ray scattering (GISAXS), and grazing-incidence small angle neutron scattering (GISANS). For N BB = 1 (diblock BCP), a mixed lamellar orientation was found. For N BB = 5 (star-like BBCP), a vertical orientation of the lamellar microdomains was found dominantly at the interfaces that propagated into the bulk of the film due to the entropic penalty associated with constraints on the junction points. Increasing the N BB to 50 (rod-like BBCP) and 100 (worm-like BBCP) yielded a random orientation, as the side chains became overcrowded when aligned in the same direction. By reducing the grafting density (GD) of a N BB = 50 BBCP from 100% to 75% and 50% by the incorporation of spacers into the backbone, the steric hindrance of side chains is reduced markedly, facilitating a vertical orientation of the lamellar microdomains. However, the vertical orientation becomes more random within the bulk of the thin film for different BBCP architectures. By modifying the substrate with a layer of PS, the preferential interactions between the core block of the BBCP and the interfaces induce a reconfiguration of the BBCP, drawing the core block out to contact substrate directly driven by enthalpy. Under these conditions, N BB = 5 showed a predominantly parallel orientation of the lamellar microdomains with the corona block minimizing contact with the substrate. Higher N BB values of 50 and 100 showed a more random orientation of the lamellar microdomains at different depths on the PS-modified substrate. Overall, thin-film morphology was regulated by tuning the configuration of the BBCP, varying the entropic contribution to the microdomain orientation.

Calcium Sulfate and Calcium Carbonate Scaling of Thin-Film Composite Polyamide Reverse Osmosis Membranes with Surface-Tethered Polyacrylic Acid Chains

The gypsum and calcite scaling propensities of the thin-film composite polyamide (PA-TFC) reverse osmosis (RO) membrane, modified with a tethered surface layer of polyacrylic acid (PAA) chains, was evaluated and compared to the scaling of selected commercial RO membranes. The tethered PAA layer was synthesized onto a commercial polyamide membrane (i.e., base-PA) via atmospheric pressure plasma-induced graft polymerization (APPIGP). The PAA nano-structured (SNS) base-PA membrane (SNS-PAA-PA) was scaled to a lesser degree, as quantified by a lower permeate flux decline and surface imaging, relative to the tested commercial membranes (Dow SW30, Toray SWRO, and BWRO). The cleaning of gypsum-scaled membranes with D.I. water flushing achieved 100% water permeability recovery for both the SNS-PAA-PA and Dow SW30 membranes, relative to 92–98% permeability restoration for the Toray membranes. The calcium carbonate scaling of SNS-PAA-PA membranes was also lower relative to the commercial membranes, but permeability recovery after D.I. water cleaning was somewhat lower (94%) but consistent with the level of surface scale coverage. In contrast, the calcite and gypsum-scaled membrane areas of the commercial membranes post-cleaning were significantly higher than for the SNS-PAA-PA membrane but with 100% permeability recovery, suggesting the potential for membrane damage when mineral scaling is severe.

Reversible Binding Interfaces Made of Microstructured Polymer Brushes

The polymer brush architecture of the end-tethered polymer molecules is one of the most widely used efficient methods to regulate interfacial interactions in colloidal systems found in live matter and manufactured materials. Emerging applications of polymer brush structures require solutions to new tasks in the control of interfacial interactions. The rapid development of live cell manufacturing relies on scalable and efficient cell harvesting methods. Stimuli-responsive surfaces made of surface-grafted poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) can bind and detach the adherent cell upon changes in temperature and have been used for cell growth and harvesting. The applications are limited by the requirement to satisfy a range of PNIPAM coating characteristics that depend on the dimensions of the integrin complex in the cell membrane and the basal surface. The analysis of the microstructured surfaces, when adhesive and disjoining functions of the microdomains are decoupled, shows that many limitations of PNIPAM one-component coatings can be avoided by using a much broader range of structural characteristics of the microstructured interfaces composed of alternating disjoining PNIPAM domains and adhesive polymeric domains with cell-affinity functional groups. Temperature-controlled reversible adhesion to such microstructured interfaces is studied here experimentally with model systems of solid spherical particles and by employing simulations for solid and soft membranes interacting with the microstructured surfaces to mimic interactions with soft and solid disk-like particles.

A Self-Healable Sulfide/Polymer Composite Electrolyte for Long-Life, Low-Lithium-Excess Lithium-Metal Batteries

Solid electrolyte-protected lithium-metal anodes promise energy-dense, safe cells. While sulfide solid electrolytes enable facile processability and fast ion transport, they suffer from complex chemo-mechanical issues, including Li plating-induced fracture and Li stripping-induced contact loss. To address these issues, a grafting approach is implemented to functionalize the sulfide solid electrolyte (Li 3,85 Sn 0.85 Sb 0.15 S 4 ) with a self-healing unit. This leads to a dynamic bonding between the solid electrolyte network and a mechanically robust polymer scaffold, which reversibly accommodates the volume changes of the lithium-metal anode. Thus, the approach improves the interfacial contact between the lithium-metal anode and the composite electrolyte, enabling stable cycling at a mild stack pressure (160 kPa). With a negative to positive capacity ratio equals to 1, pouch full cells with a high-nickel cathode (nickel content > 90%) and lithium-metal anode display 92% capacity retention for 140 cycles. Engineering the interface between solid electrolyte and the polymeric binder offers a promising pathway to address the chemo-mechanical issues.

Accelerated Self-Healing and Property Recovery in Brush Particle Solids Featuring Brush Dispersity

Brush particles, hybrid materials consisting of polymer chains tethered to particle surfaces, offer tunable properties that make them promising candidates for advanced functional materials. This study investigated the role of chain dispersity in the viscoelastic self-healing of poly (methyl acrylate) (PMA)-based brush particle solids. Increasing the molecular weight dispersity of grafted chains significantly enhanced both strain-to-fracture and toughness of brush particle solids, while the elastic modulus and glass transition temperature were independent of chain dispersity. Cut-and-adhere testing revealed a significant acceleration of the rate of toughness recovery in high-dispersity systems as compared to low-dispersity analogs for which toughness recovery markedly lagged the recovery of Young’s modulus. The results suggest that structure and property recovery in brush particle solids are sensitive to the dynamical heterogeneity of brush canopies and highlight the role of molecular weight dispersity as a design parameter to enable hybrid materials with advanced self-healing ability.

Strategy for Nonenzymatic Harvesting of Cells via Decoupling of Adhesive and Disjoining Domains of Nanostructured Stimulus-Responsive Polymer Films

The nanostructured polymer film introduces a novel mechanism of nonenzymatic cell harvesting by decoupling solid cell-adhesive and soft stimulus-responsive cell-disjoining areas on the surface. The key characteristics of this architecture are the decoupling of adhesion from detachment and the impermeability to the integrin protein complex of the adhesive domains. This surface design eliminates inherent limitations of thermoresponsive coatings, namely, the necessity for the precise thickness of the coating, grafting or cross-linking density, and material of the basal substrate. The concept is demonstrated with nanostructured thermoresponsive films made of cell-adhesive epoxy photoresist domains and cell-disjoining poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) brush domains.

Encapsulation of highly viscous CO 2 capture solvents for enhanced capture kinetics: Modeling investigation of mass transfer mechanisms

The encapsulation of highly viscous liquid-like Nanoparticle Organic Hybrid Materials (NOHMs) inside a gas permeable polymer to form SIPs (Solvent Impregnated Polymers) significantly enhanced the CO 2 capture kinetics of NOHMs, leading to a remarkable 50-fold increase in CO 2 flux compared to the neat NOHMs. To understand the mechanism for enhanced CO 2 mass transfer within these hybrid materials, kinetic modeling of CO 2 uptake into SIPs containing polyethylenimine functionalized NOHMs, denoted NPEI-SIP, was conducted. CO 2 mass transfer into NPEI-SIP films was found to conform, both qualitatively and quantitatively, with a diffusion-controlled moving front model. The diffusion-controlled model was also used to simulate CO 2 uptake within a fixed bed containing polydisperse NPEI-SIP particles, and this model accurately predicted experimentally measured breakthrough curves at 25 °C and 50 °C. The 50-fold increase in gas flux was shown to be a consequence of the very large CO 2 permeability within the polymer–solvent composite. Furthermore, the increase in gas flux is also dependent on the diffusion–reaction regime in which the chemical solvent operates, and the largest improvement will occur when immobilizing solvents, such as NOHMs, which operate in the instantaneous-reaction regime. The CO 2 capacity (~3 mol CO 2 /kg) and saturation time (~5 min) of 430 μm SIP particles were comparable to popular CO 2 chemisorption materials such as amine grafted silicates, in spite of the slow kinetics of NOHM-I-PEI in liquid form (CO 2 saturation time ~24 h for a 1 mm thin film).

Synthesis and Characterization of Methacrylamide-Based Block Random Copolymers via Amine Functionalization of Polystyrene- Block -Poly(Pentafluorophenyl Methacrylate) Toward Enhanced Amenability to Manufacturing Criteria in Nanolithography

Recent interest in manipulating the chemistry of block copolymers (BCPs) to manage the covarying properties necessary to meet manufacturing criteria in nanolithography has resulted in the development and expansion of the A-block-(B-random-C) BCP architecture, where the random block allows for the decoupling of thermodynamic and wetting properties. Previous reports of such BCPs have used click chemistry to create the desired random block, but all such instances possess additional functional groups that are susceptible to undesirable side reactions upon annealing, such as cross-linking and surface grafting. This study reports the substitution reaction of polystyrene-block-poly(pentafluorophenyl methacrylate) (PS-b-PPFMA) with primary amines. The resulting methacrylamide structure of the functionalized random block has only an amide linkage between the attached functional group and the polymer backbone, thereby omitting any sources of side reactions within the BCP. The outcomes of this report also demonstrate the enhanced thermal stability of these materials by virtue of their stable amide bonds. A range of random copolymer compositions is assessed to develop BCPs in which the random block has approximately the same surface energy as the PS block. These BCPs can self-assemble into perpendicular lamellae and are therefore promising candidates for directed self-assembly.

Formulation of PI Aerogels with 3-D Printing Applications

Polyimide-based films were produced with 3-D printing capability consisting of TDI and PMDA monomers with acrylate functionality. The polymer was synthesized using a standard condensation with diisocyanate and dianhydride heated to 95⁰C under water free conditions. This method is relatively fast, cost effective and far more synthetically simple compared to diamine condensations seen in literature. Considering how crucial proper grafting of functional groups was in hierarchy application, various formulation variables were screened. Lastly, films were produced with PI material and the physical and chemical properties were examined using microscope imaging and UV-Vis Spectroscopy. The material was proven to have relatively fast cure times (5-10 minutes) and the films were shown to have long term stability.

Compatibilization Strategy and Mechanism for Co-stabilizing Commingled Plastics and Pyrolyzed Rubber in Asphalt

Hot mix asphalt mixture is considered the ideal approach to reuse waste plastics in high-value applications because of its very high amount of usage in highway construction. However, the differences in polarity and density between polymers and asphalt lead to polymer coalescence and therefore the poor storage stability of modified asphalt. These challenges are exalted when recycling commingled plastics. This study introduced an innovative compatibilization strategy and mechanism for co-stabilizing commingled plastics and pyrolyzed rubber in asphalt. Commingled plastics were first grafted with maleic anhydride for surface activation, followed by reactive kneading with pyrolyzed rubber and crosslinking agent to form an integrated thermoplastic elastomer (ITPE) for asphalt modification. The mechanical, thermal, and interfacial behaviors of the ITPE were evaluated through tensile testing, thermogravimetric analysis, and scanning electron microscopy. The storage stability and rheological properties of the modified binder blends were evaluated through the cigar tube test and dynamic shear rheometer testing. Results demonstrated a successful formation of imide bonds in the ITPE, which can improve the strength, ductility, and thermal stability of rubber–plastic composites. Appropriate utilization of crosslinking agents can improve both rutting and fatigue resistance of ITPE-modified asphalt with good storage stability because of the co-existence of rigid plastic and soft rubbery regimes and the formation of a crosslink network. Furthermore, excessive content of crosslinker led to severe phase separation and reduced storage stability of modified binder blends. Extra crosslinker tended to float in asphalt because of its low density and caused an excessive formation of the crosslink network in the top section of the asphalt.

Melt State Reinforcement of Polyisoprene by Silica Nanoparticles Grafted with Polyisoprene

Here, we systematically vary the nanoparticle (NP) dispersion state in composites formed by mixing polyisoprene homopolymers with polyisoprene grafted silica particles, and demonstrate how creep measurements allow us to overcome the limitations of small amplitude oscillatory shear (SAOS) experiments. This allows us to access nearly 13 orders in time in the mechanical response of the resulting composites. We find that a specific NP morphology, a percolating particle network achieved at intermediate graft densities, significantly reinforces the system and has a lower NP percolation loading threshold relative to other morphologies. These important effects of morphology only become apparent when we combine creep measurements with SAOS re-emphasizing the role of synergistically combining methods to access the mechanical properties of polymer nanocomposites over broad frequency ranges.

Chemiresistor sensor based on ion-imprinted polymer (IIP)-functionalized rGO for Cd(II) ions in water

This study reports the design and development of a novel chemiresistor (CR) sensor using ion imprinted polymer (IIP)-functionalized reduced graphene oxide (rGO) [IIP/rGO-CR] for cadmium ions (Cd(II)) determination in water. The sensor consisted of a CR transducer made of rGO channel bridging source and drain electrodes prepared by self-assembly and thermal reduction of graphene oxide (GO) on Au interdigitated electrodes chip fabricated on Si/SiO 2 substrate. The IIP was then grafted on rGO using surface-initiated reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization with polyethylenimine (PEI) and methylacrylic acid (MAA) as dual functional monomers and Cd(II) ions as template through UV light-initiated copolymerization. The IIP functionalized on rGO acted as an effective recognition element that modulated the resistance of rGO-CR upon binding of Cd(II), enabling Cd(II) detection at ppb level in aqueous solutions. The prepared IIP/rGO-CR sensor worked effectively in the linear range of 2~200ppb and achieved a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.83 ppb, which is lower than the World Health Organization guidelines of 3ppb for drinking water quality. The developed sensor of IIP/rGO-CR showed a high selectivity against a variety of trace and heavy metal ions found in water and good stability for up to 60 days when stored at room temperature for Cd(II) determination in water. Further, the sensor was successfully applied to analyzing Cd(II) spiked in tap, lake and river waters with a 94.5%–113.5% recovery, demonstrating a high degree of accuracy even in complex water samples. Finally, our results illustrated that the CR sensor of IIP functionalized rGO provides a potential platform for sensitive, robust and low-cost environmental analysis of Cd(II) in water.

Multiscale Modeling of Thermal Conductivity of Polymer/Carbon Nanocomposites

Molecular dynamics simulation was used to estimate the interfacial thermal (Kapitza) resistance between nanoparticles and amorphous and crystalline polymer matrices. Bulk thermal conductivities of the nanocomposites were then estimated using an established effective medium approach. To study functionalization, oligomeric ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymers were chemically bonded to a single wall carbon nanotube. The results, in a poly(ethylene-vinyl acetate) matrix, are similar to those obtained previously for grafted linear hydrocarbon chains. To study the effect of noncovalent functionalization, two types of polyethylene matrices. -- aligned (extended-chain crystalline) vs. amorphous (random coils) were modeled. Both matrices produced the same interfacial thermal resistance values. Finally, functionalization of edges and faces of plate-like graphite nanoparticles was found to be only modestly effective in reducing the interfacial thermal resistance and improving the composite thermal conductivity

Carbon capture in polymer-based electrolytes

Nanoparticle organic hybrid materials (NOHMs) have been proposed as excellent electrolytes for combined CO 2 capture and electrochemical conversion due to their conductive nature and chemical tunability. However, CO 2 capture behavior and transport properties of these electrolytes after CO 2 capture have not yet been studied. Here, we use a variety of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques to explore the carbon speciation and transport properties of branched polyethylenimine (PEI) and PEI-grafted silica nanoparticles (denoted as NOHM-I-PEI) after CO 2 capture. Quantitative 13 C NMR spectra collected at variable temperatures reveal that absorbed CO 2 exists as carbamates (RHNCOO – or RR'NCOO – ) and carbonate/bicarbonate (CO 3 2– /HCO 3 – ). The transport properties of PEI and NOHM-I-PEI studied using 1 H pulsed-field-gradient NMR, combined with molecular dynamics simulations, demonstrate that coulombic interactions between negatively and positively charged chains dominate in PEI, while the self-diffusion in NOHM-I-PEI is dominated by silica nanoparticles. These results provide strategies for selecting adsorbed forms of carbon for electrochemical reduction.
