Particle-hole symmetric slave-boson method for the mixed valence problem

We introduce an analytic slave-boson method for treating the finite-𝑈 Anderson impurity model. Our approach introduces two bosons to track both 𝑄 ⇌ 𝑄 ± 1 valence fluctuations and reduces to a single symmetric 𝑠 boson in the effective action, encoding all the high-energy atomic physics information in the boson's kinematics, while the low-energy part of the action remains unchanged across finite-𝑈, infinite-𝑈, and Kondo limits. We recover the infinite-𝑈- and Kondo-limit actions from our approach and show that the Kondo resonance already develops in the normal state when the slave boson has yet to condense. We show that the slave rotor and 𝑠 boson have the same algebraic structure, and we establish a unified functional integral framework connecting the 𝑠-boson and slave-rotor representations for the single-impurity Anderson model.

Lanczos Algorithm, the Transfer Matrix, and the Signal-to-Noise Problem

This Letter introduces a method for determining the energy spectrum of lattice quantum chromodynamics by applying the Lanczos algorithm to the transfer matrix and using a bootstrap generalization of the Cullum-Willoughby method to filter out spurious eigenvalues. Proof-of-principle analyses of the simple harmonic oscillator and the lattice quantum chromodynamics proton mass demonstrate that this method provides faster ground-state convergence than the “effective mass,” which is related to the power-iteration algorithm. Lanczos provides more accurate energy estimates than multistate fits to correlation functions with small imaginary times while achieving comparable statistical precision. Two-sided error bounds are computed for Lanczos results and guarantee that excited-state effects cannot shift Lanczos results far outside their statistical uncertainties.

ALP contribution to the strong C P problem

We compute the one-loop contribution to the θ ¯ parameter of an faxionlike particle (ALP) with C P -odd derivative couplings. Its contribution to the neutron electric dipole moment is shown to be orders of magnitude larger than that stemming from the one-loop ALP contributions to the up- and down-quark electric and chromoelectric dipole moments. This strongly improves existing bounds on ALP-fermion C P -odd interactions and also sets limits on previously unconstrained couplings. The case of a general singlet scalar is analyzed as well. In addition, we explore how the bounds are modified in the presence of a Peccei-Quinn symmetry. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Graph-Based Attention Mechanisms for Solving the AC Optimal Power Flow Problem in Electrical Power Networks

With the increasing complexity and data availability in modern power systems, learning-based approaches to AC Optimal Power Flow (AC OPF) have garnered significant attention. In particular, the structure of smart grids lends itself naturally to graph-based representations, where Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) can capture spatial and relational dependencies. This paper investigates attention-based GNN architectures tailored to heterogeneous graph representations of electric grids. We evaluate two major paradigms: relational attention, which distinguishes between edge types during message passing, and meta-path attention, which captures high-level semantics through multi-hop, typed paths. Using a large corpus of public AC OPF scenarios, we benchmark representative models of each type of attention. Our results demonstrate the benefits of heterogeneous attention-based models in accurately capturing grid dynamics; heterogeneous attention models achieve superior performance in both standard and perturbed settings. The findings highlight the importance of semantic-aware architectures for improving prediction robustness and interpretability in power system applications.

An Open-source Llm Enhanced-tool Specialized In Helping Moose Related Problems And Tasks

MOOSEenger is an open-source, terminal-first chat application for the MOOSE ecosystem that couples specialized parsing of MOOSE documentation and “.i” input files with retrieval-augmented generation to deliver grounded answers about multiphysics modeling and workflows. It includes dedicated readers for MOOSE-style HTML and a pyhit-based parser that uses the MOOSE syntax tree to preserve block structure and attach retrieval metadata. A data-ingestion pipeline performs semantic chunking into atomic facts and stores them hierarchically in a local Chroma vector database that maintains parent–child relationships across documents; the system can ingest directories, individual files, and single-page web content, and it provides CRUD operations (insert, update, delete) to manage the corpus. At query time, relevant chunks are embedded, retrieved, and fused into the model context, with interactive features such as token streaming, persistent chat history, and dynamic RAG (retrieval triggered by user input or intermediate model output). Deployment is flexible: MOOSEenger runs with local Ollama models or remote Hugging Face/OpenAI backends—typically coordinating generation, lightweight tagging/summarization, and embeddings across three models—and it also supports a server mode and integration with the VS Code Continue interface.

Modeling and Calibration of Supplier Selection Problem in Freight Agent-Based Simulations

Freight transportation modeling often struggles with data limitations, especially in accurately representing complex supplier selection processes and their impact on network flows. This research addresses this critical gap by developing a large-scale, calibrated agent-based model for supplier selection, complemented by a probabilistic heuristic for international shipments. Our approach integrates trade relationships between industry sectors, transportation costs, and a supplier-rating model adapted from existing literature. The model’s core objective is to minimize the discrepancy between modeled and observed commodity flows while ensuring a close match to regional shipping distance distributions. Implemented and tested across four major U.S. metropolitan areas—Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas–Fort Worth, and Los Angeles—the model demonstrates high fidelity in replicating observed freight patterns. Key findings reveal consistent alignment with national shipping distance trends and highlight significant spatial variations in commodity trade assignments and demand across the study regions. This behaviorally informed and transport-sensitive framework is designed to approximate real-world decision making, providing a robust tool for policymakers and planners to evaluate targeted interventions, assess infrastructure investments, and enhance supply chain resilience in the face of disruptions.

The eXtended virtual element method for elliptic problems with weakly singular solutions

This paper introduces a novel eXtended virtual element method, an extension of the conforming virtual element method. The X-VEM is formulated by incorporating appropriate enrichment functions in the local spaces. The method is designed to handle highly generic enrichment functions, including singularities arising from fractured domains. By achieving consistency on the enrichment space, the method is proven to achieve arbitrary approximation orders even in the presence of singular solutions. The paper includes a complete convergence analysis under general assumptions on mesh regularity, and numerical experiments validating the method’s accuracy on various mesh families, demonstrating optimal convergence rates in the L 2 - and H 1 - norms on fractured or L-shaped domains.

Damage Dynamics and Problems of Scale for Induced and Triggered Seismicity in Reservoirs

In this report, we present a high-level summary of the research we performed on this grant during the years 2017-2024. It is important to note that several of these years were the years of the COVID pandemic, and our research activities were severely impacted by these events, as were many other groups and investigators. However, we can report that we largely achieved the results we proposed. We also list below the papers published under funding from this grant over all those years.
