NEPP non-volatile memory : FY09 summary report

This report documents the activities and results of the fiscal year 2009 (FY09) funding for the NASA Electronic Parts and Packaging (NEPP) program for non-volatile memory (NVM) devices. The FY09 task was divided into two main efforts: 1. Development of in-house measurement capability for flash devices 2. Reliability characterization of multi-level vs. single-level flash devices The FY09 NEPP Non Volatile Memory study was organized into these two sections in recognition of the continued and increasing importance of NVM to NASA. All NASA missions use NVM for boot code storage and some limited data archiving. Space-grade NVM has lagged commercial NVM development by many orders of magnitude, however. This gap in density only continues to increase as space-grade memories remain constant in the 1–16 Mbit levels, while commercial flash-based devices shrink in size and double in capacity every 18 months. Commercial flash devices are now at the 32 Gbit level, 10,000 times denser than current NASA NVM. This FY marks the beginning of a significant technological transition in NVM for NASA. The aggressive scaling of commercial NVMs has, as a by-product, made some of the flash devices radiation-tolerant enough to be at least considered for low-level radiation environment missions [Irom 2008]. This NEPP task is focused on understanding the reliability and potential future applications of such highly scaled flash memories.

FPGA NEPP : FY09 summary report

This report documents the activities and results of the fiscal year 2009 (FY09) funding for the NASA Electronic Parts and Packaging (NEPP) program for re-programmable field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs). The FY09 task was divided into three efforts: 1. Device physics-based design modifications 2. Contention study of Xilinx Virtex-4 3. IDDQ study of Actel A54SX The FY09 NEPP FPGA study was organized into these three sections in recognition of the continued and increasing importance of FPGAs to NASA. FPGAs represent the state of the art in electronic components with millions and millions of transistors integrated into a single device. Modern NASA spacecraft design has dozens and dozens of FPGAs implemented onboard. FPGAs are used in critical command and data handling, instrument control and monitoring, and communications protocols, to name just a few. The reliability of FPGAs is fundamental to mission success for NASA.

The NASA Radiation Hardness Assurance (RHA) Process Standard

This paper presents status on the upcoming NASA Agency-level RHA Process Standard. Based on recommendations provided by the NASA Engineering and Safety Center (NESC), the NASA Electronic Parts and Packaging (NEPP) Program has led development of an agency-level standard for space flight avionics and electronics RHA. The standard introduces a novel RHA taxonomy and prescribes the process required by NASA programs and projects to baseline their RHA programs consistent with the MEAL (Mission, Environment, Application, and Lifetime) criteria including the risk tolerance posture. The standard also provides requirements for the RHA schedule integration in the program or project lifecycle and requirements for data deliverables content. Additional non-prescriptive technical content is provided in the standard appendices to guide development of RHA programs for NASA missions.

Considerations for the design of Ada reusable packages

Two important considerations that precede the design of Ada reusable packages (commonality and programming standards) are discuessed. First, the importance of designing packages to yield widespread commonality is expressed. A means of measuring the degree of applicability of packages both within and across applications areas is presented. Design consideration that will improve commonality are also discussed. Second, considerations for the development of programming standards are set forth. These considerations will lead to standards that will improve the reusability of Ada packages.

Program for narrow-band analysis of aircraft flyover noise using ensemble averaging techniques

A package of computer programs was developed for analyzing acoustic data from an aircraft flyover. The package assumes the aircraft is flying at constant altitude and constant velocity in a fixed attitude over a linear array of ground microphones. Aircraft position is provided by radar and an option exists for including the effects of the aircraft's rigid-body attitude relative to the flight path. Time synchronization between radar and acoustic recording stations permits ensemble averaging techniques to be applied to the acoustic data thereby increasing the statistical accuracy of the acoustic results. Measured layered meteorological data obtained during the flyovers are used to compute propagation effects through the atmosphere. Final results are narrow-band spectra and directivities corrected for the flight environment to an equivalent static condition at a specified radius.

Pyrolaser Operating System

Software provides for control and acquisition of data from optical pyrometer. There are six individual programs in PYROLASER package. Provides quick and easy way to set up, control, and program standard Pyrolaser. Temperature and emisivity measurements either collected as if Pyrolaser in manual operating mode or displayed on real-time strip charts and stored in standard spreadsheet format for posttest analysis. Shell supplied to allow macros, which are test-specific, added to system easily. Written using Labview software for use on Macintosh-series computers running System 6.0.3 or later, Sun Sparc-series computers running Open-Windows 3.0 or MIT's X Window System (X11R4 or X11R5), and IBM PC or compatible computers running Microsoft Windows 3.1 or later.

Thermal Analysis Software

A new version of Space Payload Thermal Analyzer (SSPTA) that can be used on a 386 personal computer was developed by Nicholas Teti. SSPTA/386 software package includes the programs that Goddard has traditionally used in thermal design and analysis. The original programs were modified to run on the 386 system and automatic data transfer between programs was improved. SSPTA/386 includes all the features available in Goddard's VAX version of SSPTA. The software package is highly flexible in that it allows the user to run the programs interactively or in batch mode. It provides a menu system that allows the user to select a program or a combination of programs.
