Proposed reliability cost model

The research investigations which were involved in the study include: cost analysis/allocation, reliability and product assurance, forecasting methodology, systems analysis, and model-building. This is a classic example of an interdisciplinary problem, since the model-building requirements include the need for understanding and communication between technical disciplines on one hand, and the financial/accounting skill categories on the other. The systems approach is utilized within this context to establish a clearer and more objective relationship between reliability assurance and the subcategories (or subelements) that provide, or reenforce, the reliability assurance for a system. Subcategories are further subdivided as illustrated by a tree diagram. The reliability assurance elements can be seen to be potential alternative strategies, or approaches, depending on the specific goals/objectives of the trade studies. The scope was limited to the establishment of a proposed reliability cost-model format. The model format/approach is dependent upon the use of a series of subsystem-oriented CER's and sometimes possible CTR's, in devising a suitable cost-effective policy.

Model experiments to evaluate vortex dissipation devices proposed for installation on or near aircraft runways

The effectiveness of various vortex dissipation devices proposed for installation on or near aircraft runways is evaluated on basis of results of experiments conducted with a 0.03-scale model of a Boeing 747 transport aircraft in conjunction with a simulated runway. The test variables included type of vortex dissipation device, mode of operation of the powered devices, and altitude, lift coefficient and speed of the generating aircraft. A total of fifteen devices was investigated. The evaluation is based on time sequence photographs taken in the vertical and horizontal planes during each run.

Water table tests of proposed heat transfer tunnels for small turbine vanes

Water-table flow tests were conducted for proposed heat-transfer tunnels which were designed to provide uniform flow into their respective test sections of a single core engine turbine vane and a full annular ring of helicopter turbine vanes. Water-table tests were also performed for the single-vane test section of the core engine tunnel. The flow in the heat-transfer tunnels was shown to be acceptable.

Analysis of the proposed utilization of TDRS system by the HEAO-C satellite

The primary function of the study was to assess the impact upon the HEAO telecommunications system of the proposed relay satellite-to-ground-link configuration. The system is designed to perform the function of most of the NASA ground tracking and communications network at a net cost savings for NASA.

Aerodynamic damping and oscillatory stability of a model of a proposed HL-10 vehicle in pitch at Mach numbers from 0.20 to 2.86 and in YAW at Mach numbers from 0.20 to 1.20

Wind tunnel tests of a proposed HL-10 lifting body vehicle were conducted to determine the subsonic and transonic aerodynamic characteristics. The conditions under which the tests were conducted are described. The tests indicate that the configuration has slightly positive damping in pitch except at higher angles of attack at Mach numbers of 0.8, 0.9, and 1.0. At supersonic speeds, the configuration has positive damping in pitch for all test conditions. At subsonic and transonic speed, the configuration has positive damping and positive stability in yaw for all test conditions.

An investigation of environmental factors associated with the current and proposed jetty systems at Belle Pass, Louisiana

The history of the existing jetty system at Belle Pass was investigated to determine its past effect on the littoral currents and beach erosion. Present flow patterns and erosion rates were also studied, along with the prevailing recession rates of local beaches not influenced by the jetty system. Aerial photographs and maps were used in conjunction with periodic hydraulic measurements, ground observations, and physical measurements of beach erosion. A scale model was constructed to further the study of flow patterns and velocities. It is shown that the existing jetty has not adversely affected the coastline in the area; erosive processes have been retarded by the jetty and its companion groin. Future erosion patterns are predicted, and projected effects of the proposed jetty system are given.

Aerodynamic damping and oscillatory stability in pitch of a model of a proposed manned lifting entry vehicle at Mach Numbers of 1.80, 2.16, and 2.86

Wind tunnel tests were conducted using a model of a proposed manned lifting entry vehicle to determine the aerodynamic damping and oscillatory stability in pitch. The model was tested at Mach numbers of 1.80, 2.16, and 2.86. Angles of attack varied from minus 2 degrees to plus 30 degrees at zero angle of sideslip using a small-amplitude, forced-oscillation technique. It was determined that, in general, all the configurations have near zero or slightly positive damping in pitch throughout the angle of attack range. The effects of the deflection of flaps on aerodynamic damping are discussed.

Imperial Valley's proposal to develop a guide for geothermal development within its county

A plan to develop the geothermal resources of the Imperial Valley of California is presented. The plan consists of development policies and includes text and graphics setting forth the objectives, principles, standards, and proposals. The plan allows developers to know the goals of the surrounding community and provides a method for decision making to be used by county representatives. A summary impact statement for the geothermal development aspects is provided.

Analysis of turbofan engine performance deterioration and proposed follow-on tests

Data and engine parts on in-service JT3D and JT8D engines were analyzed and documented relative to engine deterioration. It is concluded that the fan-compressor system of these engines contributes to the long term engine deterioration. An engine test and instrumentation plan was formulated for a proposed follow-on program. The goal of this program is to verify the above conclusion and to attempt to identify more precisely which components of the fan-compressor system are at fault.

Proposed distributed feedback crystal cavities for X-ray lasers

The use of zeolite crystals in distributed feedback crystal cavities for X-ray emissions is proposed. The zeolite crystals can guide the emitted X rays and can also generate the feedback necessary for self-sustained oscillation. A table lists the parameters of some typical zeolite crystals.

Proposed low-temperature solar engine

Engine, proposed for conversion of Sun's heat to motion without need for heat pumps and associated equipment, uses expansion and contraction of aluminum rod to drive tow out-of-phase windlasses. Linear displacement of 0.076 cm in rod will exert sufficient force to drive pumps, generators, and compressors.

Proposed application of lower body negative pressure to cardiology

Potential medical applications are presented of lower body negative pressure to the evaluation and treatment of cardiac patients. The essential features of an LBNP unit and the basic cardiovascular physiology of lower body negative pressure (LBNP) testing are described. Some of the results of previous spaceflight experiences and bedrest studies are summarized. The deconditioning effects of weightlessness experienced by orbiting astronauts are compared with the effects of bedrest restrictions prescribed for convalescing cardiac patients. The potential of LBNP for evaluating both pharmacological and physical activity regimens was examined, particularly in relation to post-myocardial infarction and coronary artery bypass patients. Applications of LBNP to the cardiac catheterization laboratory and the out-patient follow-up of cardiac patients are proposed.

Comparative analysis of the designs and implementation of vehicles based on reactive propulsion proposed during the nineteenth and beginning of the twentieth centuries

Examination of the presently known historical scientific literature related to the problem of reactive flight indicates that considerable attention had already been given to the idea of reactive propulsion in the nineteenth century; about thirty designs for reaction flying vehicles were proposed during this period. However, the authors of a majority of the designs limited themselves only to a presentation of a diagram of the engine or an account of the principle of its operation, giving neither plans for its structural development nor precise calculations of the amount of energy required for accomplishing reaction flight. None of these authors considered the reaction flying vehicle as an object of variable mass, their choice of energy sources was extremely random, and the theory of the flight of reaction flying vehicles remained completely undeveloped. Early rocket designs of Nezhdanovsky, Ganswindt, Goddard, Tsiolkovsky, and others are examined and the evolution of liquid-propellant rocket engines, solid-propellant rocket engines, and jet aircraft engines is reviewed.
