We studied the effect of side reactions on the reversibility of epoxy with thermoreversible Diels–Alder (DA) cycloadducts based on furan and maleimide chemistry. The most common side reaction is the maleimide homopolymerization which introduces irreversible crosslinking in the network adversely affecting the recyclability. The main challenge is that the temperatures at which maleimide homopolymerization can occur are approximately the same as the temperatures at which retro-DA (rDA) reactions depolymerize the networks. Here we conducted detailed studies on three different strategies to minimize the effect of the side reaction. First, we controlled the ratio of maleimide to furan to reduce the concentration of maleimide groups which diminishes the effects of the side reaction. Second, we applied a radical-reaction inhibitor. Inclusion of hydroquinone, a known free radical scavenger, is found to retard the onset of the side reaction both in the temperature sweep and isothermal measurements. Finally, we employed a new trismaleimide precursor that has a lower maleimide concentration and reduces the rate of the side reaction. Our results provide insights into how to minimize formation of irreversible crosslinking by side reactions in reversible DA materials using maleimides, which is important for their application as novel self-healing, recyclable, and 3D-printable materials.
According to one embodiment, a three-dimensional structure includes: at least one photopolymer having at least one metal dispersed throughout at least portions of a bulk of the structure. The structure is characterized by features having a horizontal and/or vertical feature resolution in a range from several hundred nanometers to several hundred microns. The portions of the bulk throughout which metal is dispersed may optionally be selectively determined. In more embodiments, the structure may have electroless plated metal formed on surfaces thereof, alternatively or in addition to the metal dispersed throughout the bulk of the structure. The electroless plating may be achieved without the use of a surface activation bath. Corresponding methods for forming various embodiments of such three dimensional structures are also disclosed.

A method of selecting a braid configuration for a braided liner. The method includes calculating a size ratio based on the smallest first diameter and the largest second diameter of the liner and selecting a braid material having a tensile strength. The method further includes calculating a strength ratio based on the tensile strength of the braid material and a selected target strength threshold for the braided liner and determining an optimal braid angle for the smallest first diameter portions of the liner based on the calculated size ratio.

A thermoset precursor composition includes a backbone comprising an imine bond bonding at least one of: 1) aromatic compounds together, or 2) bonding an aromatic compound to an aliphatic chain, and at least one of: an epoxy group terminating the backbone or an aldehyde group terminating the backbone. The thermoset precursor can have at least two epoxy groups, one epoxy group and one aldehyde group, or two aldehyde groups.
An in situ cure monitoring control system for use with a volumetric three dimensional (3D) printing system, wherein the volumetric 3D system includes a container defining a build volume, the container includes a photocurable resist used for making a 3D part, and the resist is responsive to an optical curing beam from a light source, which is controlled by a controller, and which is passed through the resist. The cure monitoring control system includes an optical signal source which generates optical signals having a wavelength selected in relation to a characteristic of the resist, and directed to pass through the build volume. A detector detects the optical signals and generates output signals in accordance therewith. Software monitors the output signals and uses the output signals to modify the curing beam to help optimize curing of the resist.
