Johnson Space Center Thermal Technology Roadmap 2024

This presentation gives an overview of thermal technology development efforts at the Johnson Space Center (JSC), NASA’s center for human spaceflight. The presentation begins with an overview of NASA’s current human spaceflight programs, followed by the various JSC organizations that support thermal technologies. Lastly, thermal capability gaps are described along with current development efforts that are part of the roadmap to close those gaps.

Deformable Mirror Technology Roadmap: Architecting A Path to TRL5 for Future Exoplanet Direct Imaging Space Missions

The Deformable Mirror Technology Roadmap (DMTR) is a working group tasked by NASA’s Exoplanet Program Office to study the path to bring deformable mirror (DM) systems to a Technology Readiness Level 5. DMs, and their drive electronics and harnessing, are the critical component of any exoplanet direct imaging coronagraph, and there is no device that exists today which can meet the ambitious performance goals expected for NASA’s Habitable Worlds Observatory (HWO). Here we present progress on surveying the field of DM technologies, defining a first cut set of device requirements, and recommending a development and verification maturation program.

HWO Technology Roadmapping - High Sensitivity UV and Visible Band Technologies for Instrumentation

We report on ongoing efforts by the HWO Project Office at NASA Goddard to define technology development roadmaps for a variety of technologies relevant to the astrophysics instruments on the mission. We have been soliciting input from a variety of subject matter experts (SMEs) to define the necessary development paths to achieve a TRL of 5 by 2029, the necessary cost and investment, and the schedule over which the work can be achieved. This planning is directed by the performance requirements coming out of the START science working group studies and will enable the Project Office to define the Observatory Technology Maturation Plan by Summer 2025.

Roadmap to Advance Heliostat Technologies for High Temperature Solar-Thermal Systems

Since its establishment, the Heliostat Consortium (HelioCon) has made substantial progress toward closing many of the gaps in concentrating solar power (CSP) research. Numerous techno-economic studies have been performed, investigating topics ranging from the trade-off between size and temperature for industrial process heat applications to optimization of the heliostat design itself for various applications. Significant improvements have been made in optical metrology techniques, with first steps toward in situ measurement of heliostat fields. Several standards have been, and continue to be, developed with the coordination of an international group of CSP industry participants. Training programs have been developed, with universities including CSP in their engineering curricula, and many public webinars have been held to provide broad access to the latest CSP research. Improved CSP components such as mirror facets and wireless communication systems have been developed, and the solar tower at Sandia National Laboratories has been upgraded with a testbed for closed-loop controls research and development. Field deployment challenges involving heliostat foundations and sensitive wildlife habitats have been explored, with progress made toward methods for streamlining project development and permitting. Additional knowledge has been added to the body of work on wind behavior of heliostats and arrays of heliostats, with progress made toward a holistic understanding of wind design methods. Finally, techniques have been developed and demonstrated for assessing soiling conditions at a proposed project site, with predictive models for the soiling rate showing good results. Taking these results together, HelioCon has contributed greatly to the global CSP research and development effort over the past several years.

Roadmap for Assessing Fuel Reprocessing in Fluoride-Based Salts

This joint report assesses the pyroprocessing of used nuclear fuel from molten fluoride salts being conducted between Idaho National Laboratory and Argonne National Laboratory. The goal of this report is to identify the research and development gaps needed to reduce the technical risks of extending pyroprocessing technologies and unit operations to molten fluoride salts used in molten salt reactors (MSRs). Assessing and performing the tasks outlined in this report will help mitigate the technical risks and design appropriate flowsheets for reprocessing fuel and coolant salts. These suggested tasks will provide necessary data to implement the development of unit operations. Sections are highlighted to identify processes that need to be assessed and unit operations that may be used in fluoride-based chemistries. Research and development needs are listed and discussed including re-fluorination methods, electrowinning for separations, reference electrode development, materials compatibility, salt purification/re-fluorination, and waste disposition. This report will examine the technical challenges associated with pyroprocessing in molten fluoride-based salt and outline approaches to increase the technical readiness level of pyroprocessing in molten fluoride salts.

The JPL roadmap for Deep Space navigation

This paper reviews the tentative set of deep space missions that will be supported by NASA's Deep Space Mission System in the next twenty-five years, and extracts the driving set of navigation capabilities that these missions will require. There will be many challenges including the support of new mission navigation approaches such as formation flying and rendezvous in deep space, low-energy and low-thrust orbit transfers, precise landing and ascent vehicles, and autonomous navigation. Innovative strategies and approaches will be needed to develop and field advanced navigation capabilities.
