NDA Tech: Multimodal Data Fusion with 3D Gamma-Ray Imaging for Safeguards

The ultimate project goal is to improve quantitative results obtained by the IAEA with the H420 gamma ray imager. Distribution to the IAEA will be through incorporation of project results into the software provided with the device by our commercial partner, H3D, Inc. Toward achieving that goal, we have started discussions with H3D to identify the requisite software components and how they will mesh with their own internally developed contextual data systems and other extant software components. We have identified the coded-aperture response data cube as a key structure. Discussions on contextual imaging were informative but somewhat inconclusive as the project lead on contextual data (LBNL) has not been available.

Safeguards Technolgy Development Program FY2023 Mid-Year Report

We will develop specific aspects of ultra-high-resolution microcalorimetry that support IAEA NML needs in preparation for transfer of the technology. Two techniques will be considered: gamma spectroscopy for nondestructive isotopic analysis of milligram- to gram-scale uranium and plutonium samples, and decay energy spectroscopy (DES) for isotopic analysis of specially prepared nanogram- to microgram-scale samples of alpha decaying actinides.

Demonstrating Safeguards Applications of DRiFT Gas Detector Capabilities [Slides]

DRiFT, a Detector Response Function Toolkit, post-processes MCNP output to model detector response. Three primary components: scintillator (focus of FY 21 TED work), gas detectors (focus of this FY), and semiconductor detectors. Capability to model scintillator detectors has previously been demonstrated.

Safeguards Technology Development Program: FY 2024 Mid-Year Report

This project has 2 major thrusts and 2 minor tasks – One of the major ones is a scoping study for improving uranium isotopics by analyzing higher energy, lower yield U-235 gamma emissions. The second major one benefits past projects such as auto-enrichment, and peak-based analysis routines previously added to GADRAS-DRF [1]. The two minor tasks involve an in-person or remote GADRAS-DRF training for the IAEA, and characterizing detectors of interest.

GADRAS-DRF Enhancements for Safeguards – Custom Peak Fitting to Enhance Model Fitting and Isotopics

One major software update was accomplished within the Gamma Detector Response and Analysis Software-Detector Response Function (GADRAS-DRF) package. This update allows users to adjust individual peak fits for use in subsequent analysis processes within GADRAS-DRF. A graphical user interface (GUI) was implemented so users can see the effect of their fit adjustments on the spectrum. This new feature will enhance the capability of the previously funded auto-enrichment and peak-based 1D model fit feature that was implemented in FY23 (Fiscal Year). Isotopic analysis was performed using M400 data obtained from uranium standards and the isotopic assessment is given with and without manual peak adjustments.

Advanced Reactor Safeguards and Security - Advanced Delay Technologies

As a new generation of reactors is developed, reducing the cost of physical security without impacting the required system effectiveness will help to make new reactors economical. This report discusses several access delay technologies available to help improve the overall effectiveness of the physical security system. These technologies include both passive and active delay elements, as well as guidance on best practices related to security by design principles.
