Observation of nearly identical superconducting transition temperatures in the pressurized Weyl semimetals MIrTe 4 (M=Nb and Ta)

In this work, we report the observation of pressure-induced superconductivity in type-II Weyl semimetal (WSM) candidate NbIrTe 4 and the evolution of its Hall coefficient (R H ), magnetoresistance (MR), and lattice with increasing pressure to ~ 63 GPa. These results provide a significant opportunity to investigate the universal high-pressure behavior of ternary WSMs, including the sister compound TaIrTe 4 that has been known through our previous studies. We find that the pressure-tuned evolution from the WSM to the superconducting (SC) state in these two compounds exhibit the same trend, i.e., a pressure-induced SC state emerges from the matrix of the non-superconducting WSM state at ~ 27 GPa, and then the WSM state and the SC state coexist up to 40 GPa. Above this pressure, an identical high-pressure behavior, characterized by almost the same value of R H and MR in its normal state and the same value of T c in its SC state, appears in both compounds. Our results not only reveal the evolution from the WSM state to the SC state, but also demonstrate that NbIrTe 4 and TaIrTe 4 can make the same contribution to the normal and SC states that inhabit in the high-pressure phase, although these two compounds have dramatically different band structure at ambient pressure.

Topological descendants of a multicritical Dirac semimetal with magnetism and strain

The past decades have witnessed a transformation in characterizing condensed matter systems with topology. Aided by a refined understanding of topological band structures with crystalline symmetries that has emerged recently, many electronic phases have been identified, and a plethora of materials have been predicted to host properties and functionalities. A key underlying question, also with respect to future application, is to what extent the related physical features can be manipulated, especially in the context of magnetic order. Here, we describe a paradigmatic semimetal that simultaneously incorporates multiple and sometimes conflicting topology which guarantees gaplessness and leads to an exceptionally rich family of descendent phases on lowering symmetry. We predict that this multicritical phase is realized in EuTl 2 . Starting from the parent semimetallic state, which already separates two topological insulating regimes, the interplay of inherent magnetism and strain allows for an exceptionally rich phase diagram of topological descendant states.

Dynamical piezomagnetic effect in time-reversal-invariant Weyl semimetals with axionic charge density waves

Charge density waves (CDWs) in Weyl semimetals (WSMs) have been shown to induce an exotic axionic insulating phase in which the sliding mode (phason) of the CDW acts as a dynamical axion field, giving rise to a large positive magnetoconductance. In this work, we predict that dynamical strain can induce a bulk orbital magnetization in time-reversal (TR)-invariant WSMs that are gapped by a CDW. Here, we term this effect the “dynamical piezomagnetic effect” (DPME). Unlike in J. Gooth et al., the DPME introduced in this work occurs in a bulk-constant (i.e., static and spatially homogeneous in the bulk) CDW, and does not rely on fluctuations, such as a phason. By studying the low-energy effective theory and a minimal tight-binding (TB) model, we find that the DPME originates from an effective valley axion field that couples the electromagnetic gauge field with a strain-induced pseudogauge field. In particular, whereas the piezoelectric effects studied in previous works are characterized by 2D Berry curvature, the DPME represents the first example of a fundamentally 3D strain effect originating from the Chern-Simons 3-form. We further find that the DPME has a discontinuous change at a critical value of the phase of the CDW order parameter. We demonstrate that, when there is a jump in the DPME, the surface of the system undergoes a topological quantum phase transition (TQPT), while the bulk remains gapped. Hence, the DPME provides a bulk signature of the boundary TQPT in a TR-invariant Weyl CDW.

Evidence for correlation effects in noncentrosymmetric type-II Weyl semimetals

Topological fermions have mainly been addressed in the limit of weakly correlated systems, while the realization of Kondo-like physics arising from Dirac-Weyl fermions and implying strong correlations is rare. The noncentrosymmetric Weyl fermion R AlGe compounds (with R = La and Ce) provide a promising playground for revealing the impact of electronic correlations driven by f-electron states on Weyl fermions. Here, we tackle their charge dynamics as a function of temperature. Besides spotting typical optical signatures of a type-II Weyl semimetal in both materials, we discover that electronic correlations at low temperatures renormalize the nontrivial bands hosting the Weyl nodes and lead to a reduction of the Fermi velocity as well as an enhancement of the charge carriers effective mass in CeAlGe with respect to LaAlGe, both being a fingerprint of a so-called Weyl-Kondo system.

Energy relaxation dynamics in a nodal-line semimetal

Here we study the temperature relaxation dynamics of nodal-line semimetals after a sudden excitation in the presence of acoustic and optical phonon modes. We find that the nodal line constrains the electron momenta in scattering processes, and as a result, the temperature relaxation due to acoustic phonons is exponential as a function of time. However, depending on initial conditions, other functional forms are possible. In typical pump-probe experiments, the temperature relaxation is linear due to acoustic phonons with rates that vary as ~n 1/2 with density. The temperature relaxation due to optical phonons is also linear with rates ~n -1/2 or ~n .

Weyl semimetal in the rare-earth hexaboride family supporting a pseudonodal surface and a giant anomalous Hall effect

Rare-earth hexaborides offer a rich tapestry for exploring the interplay of topological orders, magnetism, and electron-correlation effects associated with protected quantum phenomena. Using first-principles modeling, we identify in cerium hexaboride (CeB 6 ) a topological state that harbors a pseudonodal surface (PNS) along with double-Weyl fermions. An analysis of the electronic states in the vicinity of the Fermi level reveals the presence of M z -mirror-symmetry-protected band crossings that involve itinerant (d) and localized (f) states of Ce. These band crossings are found to remain nearly gapless as one goes away from the mirror plane, driving the formation of PNS states. We also demonstrate the presence of coexisting double-Weyl fermions with chiral charges of ±2 on the C 4z rotational axis. By analyzing the Berry curvature field associated with the topological states, we predict that CeB 6 supports a giant anomalous Hall conductivity of -1840Ω -1 cm -1 in the slightly electron-doped regime, which would be larger than the values reported to date in magnetic Weyl semimetals. Our study thus indicates that CeB 6 , which combines ferromagnetic order with topological physics in a heavy-fermion matrix, would provide a promising playground for investigating topological magnetic states with giant anomalous Hall responses.

Anomalous symmetry breaking in the Weyl semimetal CeAlGe

CeAlGe, a proposed type-II Weyl semimetal, orders antiferromagnetically below 5 K. At 2 K, spin-flop and spin-flip transitions to less than 1 μ B /Ce are observed in the M ⁡(H) data below 30 kOe, H∥a and b, and 4.3 kOe, H∥ $\langle$110$\rangle$, respectively, indicating a fourfold symmetry of the M ⁡(H) data along the principal directions in the tetragonal ab plane with $\langle$110$\rangle$ set of easy directions. However, anomalously robust and complex twofold symmetry is observed in the angular dependence of resistivity and magnetic torque data in the magnetically ordered state once the field is swept in the ab plane. This twofold symmetry is independent of temperature and field hystereses and suggests a magnetic phase transition that separates two different magnetic structures in the ab plane. Further, the boundary of this magnetic phase transition and possibly the type of low-field magnetic structure can be tuned by an Al deficiency.

Topological antiferromagnetic semimetal for spintronics: A case study of a layered square-net system EuZnSb 2

Here, we use the first-principles and effective Hamiltonian methods to study the electronic structure and magnetic properties of a recently synthesized layered antiferromagnetic square-net topological semimetal EuZnSb2 [Phys. Rev. Res. 2, 033462 (2020)]. The main message of the paper is that effects of small changes in the band structure produced by the magnetic ordering and changes in the orientation of the Néel vector are amplified in such transport properties as the spin Hall conductivity. We predict that the effects of the broken symmetry introduced by the ordering of the Néel vector, being very weak in the bulk, are pronounced in the surface electronic dispersion, suggesting that surface probes may be more suited to measure them. The coexistence of the magnetism with many other competing phases make this material interesting and possibly useful for quantum spintronics applications.

Hourglass-type bulk Ni 3 d band and Ce 4 f Kondo resonance states in the potential topological Kondo semimetal CeNiSn via angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy

The electronic structure of CeNiSn, which is a potential topological Kondo insulator and a Dirac nodal-loop semimetal, has been investigated by employing temperature (T) dependent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). The Fermi surfaces (FSs) and the band structures of CeNiSn for three orthogonal crystallographic planes are measured, in which both the very dispersive bands and the flat bands are observed, having mainly the Ni 3d character and the Ce 4f character, respectively. The measured FSs and ARPES bands agree reasonably well with the density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The Fermi-edge (E F ) photon energy (hν) map along k b (=k (010) ) shows that the metallic E F -crossing states on the (010) surface have the three-dimensional character, suggesting that the observed E F -crossing metallic states do not correspond to the topological surface states of the two-dimensional character. On the other hand, albeit weak, the features of the hourglass-type bulk band crossings are observed along SXS, with the energies and the slopes being similar to those predicted by the DFT calculations, supporting the Dirac semimetallic nature of CeNiSn. In T-dependent ARPES, the Ce 4f Kondo resonance states are clearly revealed at low T, which become much suppressed above ~80 K. This feature is consistent with the Kondo temperature of CeNiSn, estimated from its ρ(T) data. This work demonstrates the importance of the coherent Kondo states in determining the topological properties of CeNiSn.

Multi-$\mathcal{k}$ magnetic structure and large anomalous Hall effect in candidate magnetic Weyl semimetal NdAlGe

Here, the magnetic structure, magnetoresistance (MR), and Hall effect of the noncentrosymmetric magnetic semimetal NdAlGe are investigated, revealing an unusual magnetic state and anomalous transport properties that are associated with the electronic structure of this compound. The magnetization and MR measurements are both highly anisotropic and indicate an Ising-like magnetic system. The magnetic structure is complex in that it involves two magnetic ordering vectors, including an incommensurate spin density wave and commensurate ferrimagnetic state in zero field. We have discovered a large anomalous Hall conductivity that reaches ≈430 Ω –1 cm –1 , implying that it originates from an intrinsic Berry curvature effect stemming from Weyl nodes found in the electronic structure. These electronic structure calculations indicate the presence of nested Fermi surface pockets with nesting wave vectors like the measured magnetic ordering wave vector and the presence of Weyl nodes in proximity to the Fermi surface. We associate the incommensurate magnetic structure with the large anomalous Hall response to be the result of the combination of Fermi surface nesting and the Berry curvature associated with Weyl nodes.

Valence transition and termination-dependent surface states in the topological Kondo semimetal YbPtBi

Here, the Yb-terminated and Bi-terminated (111) surface electronic structure of topological Kondo semimetal YbPtBi is investigated using both density-functional-theory (DFT) -based calculations and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). The cleavage plane is found to be between Yb-layers and Bi-layers in both experiment and theory, and the broken inversion symmetry ensures the Yb-terminated surface does not mix with the Bi-terminated surface. The ARPES results at the Bi-terminated surface are similar to those reported for YPtBi or LuPtBi, and they can be well explained using DFT calculations assuming trivalent Yb atoms. In contrast, at the Yb-terminated surface, a trivalent to divalent transition and reduced hybridization with conduction electrons for the topmost Yb atoms are observed, as a result of reduced bonding with Bi-atoms. In addition, the Fermi arc features induced by the triply degenerate-points, which are missing at the Bi-terminated surface, can be identified at the Yb-terminated surface. Our study demonstrates unambiguously the reconstruction of surface electronic structure due to the valence transition of the lanthanide element in a Kondo lattice system.

Coexistence of Dirac fermion and charge density wave in the square-net-based semimetal LaAuSb 2

Here, we report a comprehensive study of magnetotransport properties, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), and density functional theory (DFT) calculations on self-flux grown LaAuSb 2 single crystals. Resistivity and Hall measurements reveal a charge density wave (CDW) transition at 77 K. MR and de Haas-Van Alphen (dHvA) measurements indicate that the transport properties of LaAuSb 2 are dominated by Dirac fermions that arise from Sb square nets. ARPES measurements and DFT calculations reveal an electronic structure with a common feature of the square-net-based topological semimetals, which is in good agreement with the magnetotransport properties. Our results indicate the coexistence of CDW and Dirac fermion in LaAuSb 2 , both of which are linked to the bands arising from the Sb-square net, suggesting that the square net could serve as a structural motif to explore various electronic orders.

Multigap nodeless superconductivity in the topological semimetal PdTe

Recently, PdTe was identified as a spin-orbit-coupled topological Dirac semimetal and was claimed to exhibit both bulk-nodal and surface-nodeless superconducting gaps. Here we report on ultra-low-temperature thermal-conductivity measurements on PdTe single crystals with T c = 4.5 K to investigate its superconducting gap structure. It is found that the residual linear term κ 0 /T is negligible in zero magnetic field. Furthermore, the field dependence of κ 0 ⁡(H)/T exhibits an S-shaped curve. These results suggest that PdTe has multiple nodeless superconducting gaps, which is at odds with the claimed bulk-nodal gap. The reason for the discrepancy is likely that previous angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements were only performed down to 2 K and cannot observe the smaller nodeless gap. As a result, the fully gapped superconducting state in PdTe is compatible with it being a topological superconductor candidate.

Evolution of magnetism in the magnetic topological semimetal NdSb x Te 2–x+δ

Magnetic topological semimetals LnSbTe (Ln = Lanthanide) have attracted intensive attention because of the presence of interplay between magnetism, topological, and electron correlations depending on the choices of magnetic Ln elements. Recently, varying Sb-Te composition has been found to effectively control the electronic and magnetic states in LnSb x Te 2-x . Here, with this motivation, we report the evolution of magnetic properties with Sb-Te substitution in NdSb x Te 2-x+δ , (0 ≤ x ≤ 1). Our work reveals the interesting non-monotonic change in magnetic ordering temperature with varying composition stoichiometry. In addition, reducing the Sb content x drives the reorientation of moments from in-plane (ab-plane) to out-of-plane (c-axis) direction that results in the distinct magnetic structures for two end compounds NdTe 2 (x = 0) and NdSbTe (x = 1). Furthermore, the moment orientation in NdSb x Te 2-x+δ is also found to be strongly tunable upon application of weak magnetic field, leading to rich magnetic phases depending on the composition stoichiometry, temperature, and magnetic field. Such strong tuning of magnetism in this material establishes it as a promising platform for investigating tunable topological states and correlated topological physics.

Gauge theory of giant phonon magnetic moment in doped Dirac semimetals

Here, we develop a quantitative theory of phonon magnetic moment in doped Dirac semimetals. Our theory is based on an emergent gauge field approach to the electron-phonon coupling, applicable to gapless systems. We find that the magnetic moment is directly proportional to the electrical Hall conductivity through the phonon Hall viscosity. Our theory is combined with the first-principles calculations, allowing us to quantitatively implement it to realistic materials. Magnetic moments are found to be of the order of a Bohr magneton for Raman-active phonon modes in graphene and Cd 3 ⁢As 2 . Our results provide practical guidance for the dynamical generation of large magnetization in quantum materials.

Anomalies in the electromagnetic response and peculiarities of the domain structure in the magnetic Weyl semimetal Co 3⁢ Sn 2 ⁢S 2

In this paper, we present a comprehensive study of magnetic properties of Co 3 ⁢Sn 2 ⁢S 2 (CoSnS) crystals using macroscopic characterization and observations of the domain structure (DS) in a wide range of easy- and hard-axis fields (𝐻) and temperatures (𝑇). From macroscopic measurements, we derive temperature dependences of the basic magnetic parameters of the material [saturation magnetization 𝑀 𝑠 ⁡(𝑇), uniaxial anisotropy constant 𝐾⁡(𝑇), and exchange stiffness 𝐴⁡(𝑇)] and, based on them, calculate the thermodynamic magnetization 𝑀⁡(𝐻,𝑇) curves and DS parameters for pinning-free samples. We find important qualitative and quantitative differences between the theory and experiment defined by the efficient pinning of domain walls (DWs) in our samples. It turns out that, already at temperatures close to the ferromagnetic transition 𝑇 𝑐 , the DW dynamics falls into the heavy creep regime, resulting in a strong deferral of the DS adjustment into the equilibrium state. Here, we suggest that specific magnetic defects, responsible for pinning and causing field-tuned reproducible domain nucleation patterns observed in our high-quality samples, are pointlike. Recently found magnetic polarons formed around vacancies and impurities, which carry strong diamagnetic moments of spin-orbit nature and are intrinsic for CoSnS and expected in other Weyl semimetals, are a possible source of pinning yielding peculiar 𝑀⁡(𝐻,𝑇) response of CoSnS.

From Trivial Kondo Insulator Ce 3 Pt 3 Bi 4 to Topological Nodal-Line Semimetal Ce 3 Pd 3 Bi 4

In this work, using the density functional theory combined with dynamical mean-field theory, we have performed systematic study of the electronic structure and its band topology properties of Ce 3 Pt 3 Bi 4 and Ce 3 Pd 3 Bi 4 . At high temperatures ( ~ 290 K ), the electronic structures of both compounds resemble the open-core 4 f density functional calculation results. For Ce 3 Pt 3 Bi 4 , clear hybridization gap can be observed below 72 K, and its coherent momentum-resolved spectral function below 18 K exhibits an topologically trivial indirect gap of ~ 6 meV and resembles density functional band structure with itinerant 4 f state. For Ce 3 Pd 3 Bi 4 , no clear hybridization gap can be observed down to 4 K, and its momentum-resolved spectral function resembles electron-doped open-core 4 f density functional calculations. The band nodal points of Ce 3 Pd 3 Bi 4 at 4 K are protected by the gliding-mirror symmetry and form ringlike structure. Therefore, the Ce 3 Pt 3 Bi 4 compound is topologically trivial Kondo insulator while the Ce 3 Pd 3 Bi 4 compound is topological nodal-line semimetal.

Spin Waves in Dirac Semimetal Ca 0.6⁢ Sr 0.4⁢ MnSb 2 Investigated with Neutrons by the Diffraction Method

The tunability of Dirac semimetals with antiferromagnetic Mn layers is of great interest. The observed sign change of interlayer magnetic coupling between CaMnBi 2 and SrMnBi 2 suggests ionic substitution as a potential tuning mechanism. If so, novel behavior near the compensation point could be expected. Here, to explore this, we study a mixed-cation analog, Ca 0.6⁢ Sr 0.4⁢ MnSb 2 , where Bi is replaced by Sb. Conventional inelastic neutron scattering is impractical due to the small crystal size (m ≈ 0.28 g) available for compositional studies; however, we find that using a neutron diffractometer with a wide-angle area detector we can obtain a good quality spin-wave signal, which is shaped by energy-momentum conservation and retains spectroscopic information even without direct energy analysis. Spin-wave modeling reveals an interlayer coupling quantitatively similar to SrMnSb 2 , indicating it is not directly tuned by ionic size and that the sign change in Bi-based compounds likely arises from the observed change in lattice symmetry. Beyond this key insight, our results present an efficient method for parametric and compositional studies of spin dynamics in small crystals.
