First Simultaneous Measurement of Differential Muon-Neutrino Charged-Current Cross Sections on Argon for Final States with and without Protons Using MicroBooNE Data

We report the first double-differential neutrino-argon cross section measurement made simultaneously for final states with and without protons for the inclusive muon neutrino charged-current interaction channel. The proton kinematics of this channel are further explored with a differential cross section measurement as a function of the leading proton’s kinetic energy that extends across the detection threshold. These measurements use data collected with the MicroBooNE detector from 6.4 × 10 20 protons on target from the Fermilab booster neutrino beam with a mean neutrino energy of ∼ 0.8 GeV . Extensive data-driven model validation utilizing the conditional constraint formalism is employed. This motivates enlarging the uncertainties with an empirical reweighting approach to minimize the possibility of extracting biased cross section results. The extracted nominal flux-averaged cross sections are compared to widely used event generator predictions revealing severe mismodeling of final states without protons for muon neutrino charged-current interactions, possibly from insufficient treatment of final state interactions. These measurements provide a wealth of new information useful for improving event generators which will enhance the sensitivity of precision measurements in neutrino experiments. Simultaneous Unbinned Differential Cross-Section Measurement of Twenty-Four Z+jets Kinematic Observables with the ATLAS Detector

Z boson events at the Large Hadron Collider can be selected with high purity and are sensitive to a diverse range of QCD phenomena. As a result, these events are often used to probe the nature of the strong force, improve Monte Carlo event generators, and search for deviations from standard model predictions. All previous measurements of Z boson production characterize the event properties using a small number of observables and present the results as differential cross sections in predetermined bins. In this analysis, a machine learning method called omnifold is used to produce a simultaneous measurement of twenty-four Z +jets observables using 139 fb -1 of proton-proton collisions at √s =13 TeV collected with the ATLAS detector. Unlike any previous fiducial differential cross-section measurement, this result is presented unbinned as a dataset of particle-level events, allowing for flexible reuse in a variety of contexts and for new observables to be constructed from the twenty-four measured observables.

Boron-10 Doped Polysiloxanes as Matrix Materials for Application in the Simultaneous Detection and Discrimination of Gamma Rays and Fast and Thermal Neutrons

Three boron-10 enriched aromatic molecules have been synthesized and incorporated into two different commercial polysiloxane resins, Shin Etsu KER-6000 and Wacker SilRes H62-C. Scintillating fluorophores, 9,9-dimethyl-2-phenylfluorene (PhF) and 2,5-diphenyloxazole (PPO), were tested in combination with each resin and boron-10 molecule for the simultaneous detection of gamma rays, fast neutrons, and thermal neutrons. Here, the H62-C resin was able to solubilize a large amount of PhF, in excess of 20 wt%. Cure kinetics were controlled through the addition of divinylbenzene and phenyl tris(dimethylsiloxy)silane cross-linker solution to the H62-C resin, with rheology experiments demonstrating a large reduction in time to gelation when 20 wt% cross-linker solution was added, from more than 4 hours to less than 1 hour. These polysiloxane resins can be cured in 3 hours under air, while common poly(vinyltoluene) scintillators require at least 4 days of heating and oxygen-free conditions. PhF-doped KER-6000 with tolyl boronate pinacol ester exhibited the best overall performance with a light yield of 62% relative to EJ-200 and thermal neutron capture at energies up to 103 keVee (84 keVee for EJ254B-5). Additionally, four samples exhibited light yields surpassing an industry-standard boron-doped plastic scintillator, Eljen’s EJ254B-5. Over the course of ten months, the KER-6000 samples showed precipitation of dopant molecules, which reduced their light yield by 15% on average, while H62-C proved to be more stable with only a 6% reduction.

Individual and Simultaneous Imaging of ⁹⁹mTc and ¹⁷⁷Lu With a Preclinical Broad Energy-Spectrum CZT-Based SPECT

Radiopharmaceutical therapy has demonstrated a high efficacy in the treatment of various tumor types. One of the radionuclides already used in the clinic is 177Lu, a beta emitter that also emits several photons imageable with SPECT. Quantitative imaging of 177Lu is critical for developing new radiopharmaceuticals. Energy resolution is an important factor when imaging multiple photon emissions. Solid-state detectors offer a superior performance over scintillators, that are commonly used in commercially-available preclinical SPECT scanners. This study demonstrates the feasibility of 99m Tc and 177Lu quantitative imaging in mouse phantoms, individually and simultaneously, with a SPECT prototype built with four CdZnTe (CZT) detector heads and a custom-designed and energy-optimized parallel-hole tungsten collimator. With a custom implementation of the one-step late (OSL) image reconstruction algorithm, the system is capable of imaging energies from ~70 keV to 250 keV. Above 250 keV, images were significantly affected by septal penetration, consistent with the collimator design. A recovery coefficient within 25% was obtained for activities as low as 2 kBq/mL for 99m Tc and 45% for 177Lu. Compared to a commercial NaI-based preclinical SPECT (VECTor4/CT), our prototype showed a superior energy resolution (< 5% at 140 keV), a similar uniformity with a high-compact design.

Simultaneous measurement of temperature and strain by cascaded fiber Bragg grating-silicon Fabry-Perot interferometer sensor

We report a fiber-optic sensor configuration with a cascaded fiber Bragg grating (FBG) and a silicon Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) for simultaneous measurement of temperature and strain. The sensor is composed of a 5 mm FBG on a single mode fiber and a 100μm thick silicon FPI attached to the tip of the optical fiber. The FBG is surface mounted on the host structure, and the FPI tip is suspended. Due to the stress-free, cantilever configuration, the silicon FPI is insensitive to strain, but sensitive to temperature with a sensitivity much higher than the FBG due to the large thermo-optic coefficient of silicon. The sensor is tested from room temperature to 100°C with varying strain up to ∼150με. The silicon FPI provides high temperature sensitivity of 89 pm/°C unaffected by strain. Since the FBG is attached to the host structure, it is affected by both thermal and mechanical strain; the sensitivity of these was experimentally obtained 32 pm/°C and 1.09 pm / με, respectively. Interrogated with a broadband light source and a high-speed spectrometer, the sensor shows temperature and strain resolutions of 1.9 × 10 −3 °C and 0.042 με, respectively. Here, due to the small size, enhanced sensitivity, and high resolution, this cascaded FBG-FPI sensor can be used in applications where accurate measurement of temperature and strain is required.

X-ray nano-holotomography reconstruction with simultaneous probe retrieval

In conventional tomographic reconstruction, the pre-processing step includes flat-field correction, where each sample projection on the detector is divided by a reference image taken without the sample. When using coherent X-rays as a probe, this approach overlooks the phase component of the illumination field (probe), leading to artifacts in phase-retrieved projection images, which are then propagated to the reconstructed 3D sample representation. The problem intensifies in nano-holotomography with focusing optics, which, due to various imperfections creates high-frequency components in the probe function. Here, we present a new iterative reconstruction scheme for holotomography, simultaneously retrieving the complex-valued probe function. Implemented on GPUs, this algorithm results in 3D reconstruction resolving twice thinner layers in a 3D ALD standard sample measured using nano-holotomography.

Simultaneous prediction of structural properties in epitaxially–grown GaN with quantum and conventional multi–output learning algorithms

Hundreds of GaN thin film crystal plasma–assisted molecular beam epitaxy synthesis experiment records spanning two decades were organized into a dataset correlating the growth experiment design parameters with discrete, binary determinations of crystallinity and surface morphology. Conventional data science techniques as well as both quantum and classical multi–output supervised machine learning algorithms were implemented to investigate the relationships between the operating parameter data and the structural figures of merit. Correlation coefficients, decision tree nodes, p–values, and SHAP values all support substrate temperature and gallium effusion cell conditions as being statistically significant for simultaneously influencing GaN crystallinity and surface morphology. Here, a conventional deep neural network learned best from the data, followed by a quantum–classical hybrid gradient boosting algorithm. When combined with calculations of uncertainty intervals based on VennAbers predictors, machine learning predictions of both structural properties show good agreement with results reported in published experimental literature.

Optimizing the sextupole configuration for simultaneous correction of third order resonances at the recycler ring

For the Recycler Ring at Fermilab, space charge tune shifts of almost 0.1 will have to be dealt with under the Proton Improvement Plan (PIP-II) framework. This will lead to the excitation of third order resonances. The minimization of Resonance Driving Terms (RDTs) allows to mitigate the harmful effect of these betatron resonances. Past work has shown that previously-installed sextupoles can compensate the RDTs of individual third order resonance lines, thus reducing particle losses in these operational regimes. Nevertheless, trying to compensate multiple resonances of the same order simultaneously with these existing sextupoles is limited due to current constraints in the magnets. The following study showcases the procedure to install additional sextupoles in order to aid the compensation of multiple resonances. This includes the optimization of the new sextupoles' locations in order to cancel out multiple RDTs while minimizing the currents needed. This is followed by a verification of their effectiveness by means of the RDT response matrix.

Simultaneous Thermal Analysis of Anion and Cation Exchange Resins

The decomposition reactions of one anion exchange resin (Bio-Rad AG MP-1) and one cerium-loaded cation exchange resin (DOWEX 50W-X8), both in nitrate form, were analyzed using simultaneous thermal analysis methods. Thermogravimetric analysis, dynamic scanning calorimetry, and evolved gas analysis were deployed in combination to probe the temperature profiles, reaction enthalpies, and off-gases from these resins under process-relevant temperature ranges. Analysis indicates that both resins undergo three clear phases during heating. The first is a dehydration step with prominent off-gassing of water, the second is a decomposition step with evolution of several gaseous species, and lastly is a combustion step with a large release of CO 2 . The temperature at which combustion ends varies slightly between AG MP-1 and DOWEX 50W: combustion completed at ~690°C and ~810°C, respectively. For the DOWEX cation resin, the combustion reaction showed greater sensitivity to the availability of oxygen under the test conditions. Both resins displayed broad exotherms during the combustion step of the decomposition, but the DOWEX cation resin demonstrated a 4.5 times higher specific enthalpy than that of the AG MP-1.

Innovative Interfacial Engineering for Simultaneous Enhancement in Efficiency, Stability, and Reliability in Perovskite Devices

The overarching objective of this project was to increase significantly the mechanical adhesion toughness of the key interfaces in PSCs, thereby improving the durability and reliability of PSCs and minimodules, while simultaneously enhancing their PCE. This is achieved by incorporating rationally-chosen self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) at key PSC interfaces. Inherently scalable methods for the deposition of MHP light-absorber thin films and SAMs are employed to ensure a viable path towards manufacturability. Furthermore, detailed understanding of mechanisms of PSCs and minimodules degradation, and SAMs-induced mitigation, is provided. As part of the project accomplishments, >60% increase in the adhesion toughness of the key PSC interfaces over their SAMs-free control counterparts was achieved. Also, PCEs >20% and >19% in rigid and flexible, respectively, single-junction PSCs (~1 cm 2 area) were achieved. It was shown that <20% PCE loss in flexible PSCs with SAMs can be achieved after bend testing. It was demonstrated that T80 (80% retention of initial PCE) of >5,000 hours in rigid PSCs (~1 cm2 area) can be achieved. Comprehensive understanding of the degradation mechanisms in PSCs was obtained. These strategies were adopted towards developing minimodules. PCE of >21% was obtained in an 6-cm 2 area minimodule, with T91 of 1,000 hours.

Multi-Differential Charged Current 𝝂_𝝁− Argon Cross Section without Pions in the Final State Measurement in MicroBooNE , and Current Status of Simultaneous Cross Section Extraction with ANNIE

MicroBooNE, an 85-tonne liquid argon time projection chamber detector is on-axis to the Booster Neutrino Beam (BNB) at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. MicroBooNE is elucidating neutrino interactions with argon through cross-section measurements to refine interaction models and reduce uncertainties. In this poster, we present recent published single and double multi-differential charged current (CC) cross section with zero pions in the final state (CC-0 ) as a function of muon momentum ( ) and the cosine of the muon angle ( ). We present the details of the event selection and the extraction of 1D and 2D cross sections. We further report on the status of a simultaneous cross-section extraction conducted in conjunction with the ANNIE experiment, which employs a Gd-H O target and operates on the same BNB beamline. This joint measurement enables a precision test of nuclear A-dependence between oxygen and argon, with shared flux and cross-section model correlations leading to the cancellation of systematic uncertainties.

Universal framework for simultaneous tomography of quantum states and SPAM noise

We present a general denoising algorithm for performing simultaneous tomography of quantum states and measurement noise. This algorithm allows us to fully characterize state preparation and measurement (SPAM) errors present in any quantum system. Our method is based on the analysis of the properties of the linear operator space induced by unitary operations. Given any quantum system with a noisy measurement apparatus, our method can output the quantum state and the noise matrix of the detector up to a single gauge degree of freedom. We show that this gauge freedom is unavoidable in the general case, but this degeneracy can be generally broken using prior knowledge on the state or noise properties, thus fixing the gauge for several types of state-noise combinations with no assumptions about noise strength. Such combinations include pure quantum states with arbitrarily correlated errors, and arbitrary states with block independent errors. This framework can further use available prior information about the setting to systematically reduce the number of observations and measurements required for state and noise detection. Our method effectively generalizes existing approaches to the problem, and includes as special cases common settings considered in the literature requiring an uncorrelated or invertible noise matrix, or specific probe states.

Simultaneous Reduction of NOx and Fuel Consumption for Off-Road Powertrains

Simultaneously reducing criteria pollutants and fuel consumption is important for clean air and improving vehicle total cost of ownership. The goal of this effort was focused on a 90% NOx reduction and 10% fuel savings for an off-road 407 kW diesel engine. The baseline was a production Fiat Powertrain 13L engine and aftertreatment system meeting 0.4 g/kW-hr NOx. The baseline system was quantified over the NRTC, RMC, new low load cycle and five field cycles. A next generation engine was built incorporating several fuel-efficient design features, including a higher compression ratio, increased fuel-rail pressure, low-friction piston rings, and a high-efficiency variable-geometry turbocharger. Cylinder deactivation and EGR pump technologies were added to this engine as well. The combination was optimized prior to adding advanced aftertreatment systems, showing the trade-off of engine out NOx and exhaust temperature. Two next-generation catalyst technologies were employed into a LO-SCR plus main SCR system, both with and without an electric heater upstream of the LO-SCR. These catalysts were hydrothermally aged to simulate significant field use. Dual SCR dosing with newly developed controls played a critical role in achieving the proper split between the upstream LO-SCR and the downstream main SCR. Adding a next generation mixer for the downstream SCR proved essential in obtaining the final results. The optimal configuration required adding an electric heater to elevate the exhaust temperature at the LO-SCR for early cycle NOx reduction. The final results showed a 94.8% NOx reduction and 15.7% fuel savings on the composite NRTC.
