Model of Operation-and-Maintenance Costs for Photovoltaic Systems

This article presents a method for calculating costs associated with operation and maintenance (O&M) of photovoltaic (PV) systems. It compiles details regarding the cost and frequency of multiple O&M services to estimate annual O&M costs ($\$$/year) for each year of an analysis period, the net present value ($\$$) of life cycle costs accumulated over the analysis period, and the reserve account amount ($\$$). Here we show that this method is an improvement over the previous averaged or levelized per-unit ($\$$/kW/year) valuations for estimating PV O&M costs, because it allows a detailed selection of services to perform based on system size, market served (e.g., residential, commercial, or utility), type and configuration of system components (e.g., micro-, string or central inverter) and site and environmental conditions (e.g., snow, pollen, bird populations). This model also distinguishes costs that vary from year to year and increase at different rates over time because of heuristic failure distributions (e.g. Weibull or Lognormal distribution) based on actuarial data for many of the services. This cost model was created by the PV O&M Working Group of researchers and industry, sponsored by DOE Solar Energy Technologies Office, and has been published in an on-line version hosted by SunSpec Alliance at apsuite.sunspec.org. A spreadsheet version is included with this paper as supplementary material.

Eight County Permian Basin Residual Oil Zone (ROZ) Database

This document describes the spreadsheet geologic database named ROZ_SanAnd_8.xlsm used in the report, ''An Eight-County Appraisal of the San Andres Residual Oil Zone (ROZ) 'Fairway' of the Permian Basin''. The dataset provides geologic properties for ROZ partitions in San Andres formation in eight counties in the Permian Basin. The geologic data is used to estimate total oil in place in each partition and provides the inputs needed to estimate the oil that can be produced and CO 2 stored from the application of CO 2 EOR to a partition. The database and the appraisal report are available on NETL's website under the Collection Name: Eight-County San Andres ROZ Appraisal.

SimpleMass (Version 2.0.1 Report)

SimpleMass v2 is an updated GUI version of the SimpleMass Excel spreadsheet. It was developed using Python 3.7 and wxPython, a cross-platform GUI toolkit. The program was developed on Windows 10 and tested on macOS Catalina. In theory, the program should work on Linux based operating systems such as Ubuntu, but this has not been tested. Executable versions of the code were built using PyInstaller. The version described in this report is an alpha version that is still in development. It has only been tested by the developer.

Verification and Validation of the PLTEMP/ANL Code for Thermal-Hydraulic Analysis of Experimental and Test Reactors (Code Version 4.3)

The document compiles in a single volume the verification and validation works done for the PLTEMP/ANL code during the years of its development and improvement. The verification of sixteen capabilities of the PLTEMP/ANL Version 4.3 code that were identified by research reactor analysts as frequently used in their thermal-hydraulic analysis are described and documented. Each chapter of the document deals with the verification or validation of a specific part of the software that calculates a specific phenomenon, e.g., channel flow calculation, coolant property calculation, heat transfer calculation, and flow instability calculation. The software verification work is usually done by comparing the code with hand calculation, Microsoft spreadsheet calculation, or Mathematica calculation. The software validation is done by comparing the code with experimental data or a widely tested code like the RELAP5 code. In addition, some PLTEMP/ANL verification works that are available in the open literature are simply referenced and not included in the document. PLTEMP/ANL has been used in conversion safety analysis reports of several US and foreign research reactors that have been licensed and converted. A list of such reactors is given.

Puerto Rico Demand Response Impact and Forecast Tool (PR-DRIFT) - Beta Version [Slides]

Due to high fossil fuel imports, high electricity rates, an unreliable electricity grid, and 100% renewable electricity goals, demand response can play a crucial role for the Puerto Rico electricity grid. The Puerto Rico Demand Response Impact and Forecast Tool (PR-DRIFT) is a spreadsheet-based tool in which users can estimate the potential impacts of demand response, energy efficiency, and VRE and storage adoption in Puerto Rico from 2021 through 2040. The tool includes projections for solar, wind, and battery adoption based on released RFPs and energy targets (including Act-17 2019) to generate a projected net load profile for each hour through 2040. Based on user inputs and default assumptions, the tool also projects load profile impacts of demand response and energy efficiency, and is specifically focused on highlighting projected demand response technical potential. This demand response technical potential can be used by local utilities, regulators, program administrators, or researchers to help design demand response programs for larger impact.

FECM/NETL CO 2 Transport Cost Model (2022): Model Overview [Slides]

The FECM/NETL CO 2 Transport Cost Model (CO 2 _T_COM) is an Excel spreadsheet model that calculates the cost of transporting CO 2 from the beginning to the end of a pipeline. This document provides an overview of the model. This document is intended to provide a user with a briefer description of the model and how to use the model than the user’s manual.

FECM/NETL CO 2 Transport Cost Model (2022): Description and User’s Manual

The FECM/NETL CO 2 Transport Cost Model (CO 2 _T_COM) is an Excel spreadsheet model that calculates the cost of transporting CO 2 from the beginning to the end of a pipeline. This document provides two main functions. First, the document describes the equations and algorithms that are used by the model to calculate technical quantities (such as the minimum inner pipe diameter needed to transport a user-specified CO 2 mass flow rate a specified distance) and engineering-economic quantities (such as capital costs, operating costs and cash flows). Second, the document is a user’s manual for the model that describes the procedures the user must follow to run the model. The document also describes input variables and output variables (i.e., results) for the model.

GeoRePORT Protocol Volume II: Geological Assessment Tool

The GeoRePORT System is based on the concept that a geothermal system can be described both in terms of the quality of the geothermal resource as it relates to the potential to extract heat (resource grade) and the progress of research and development over the lifetime of the project (project readiness level). By assessing the major characteristics of a geothermal resource and categorizing the techniques used and how well the research technique was implemented, users can report a resource grade. The resource grade covers multiple geological, technological, and socioeconomic attributes that can be compared across play types and geothermal areas. Resource grade and project readiness level are reported for three assessment categories: geological, technical, and socioeconomic. This protocol document applies to the Geologic Assessment Tool and is intended for use with an excel-based spreadsheet tool, published separately.
