Prediction of ambient pressure superconductivity in cubic ternary hydrides with MH 6 octahedra

Exploring high-temperature superconducting (high-T c ) material at ambient pressure holds immense significance for physics, chemistry, and materials science. In this study, we perform a high-throughput screening of strong electron-phonon interactions in X 2 MH 6 compounds (X = Li, Na, Mg, Al, K, Ca, Ga, Rb, Sr, and In; M are 3d, 4d, and 5d transition metals). These compounds have a cubic structure featuring an MH 6 octahedron motif. Our screening calculations suggest that 26 compounds exhibit dynamic stability and strong electron-phonon coupling. Among them, Mg 2 RhH 6 , Mg 2 IrH 6 , Al 2 MnH 6 , and Li 2 CuH 6 show promising energetic stability and T c of more than 50 K at ambient pressure. This study underscores promising high-T c compounds at ambient pressure with distinctive MH 6 motifs.

Magnetic Properties and Large Second-Harmonic Generation Response of a Chiral Ternary Chalcogenide: Eu 2 SiSe 4

Eu(II)-containing chalcogenides are an emerging class of materials that are of great interest due to their high optical activity and intriguing magnetism. Here, we synthesized Eu 2 SiSe 4 as red-colored single crystals and characterized its structure with single-crystal X-ray diffraction, confirming the reported chiral monoclinic P2 1 symmetry at room temperature. The crystal structure of Eu 2 SiSe 4 comprises distorted SiSe 4 tetrahedral units and charge-balancing Eu(II) cations. Here, we develop a two-step solid-state synthesis method for Eu 2 SiSe 4 and compare it to the known boron chalcogenide method. We find the second-harmonic generation (SHG) activity of polycrystalline Eu 2 SiSe 4 to be ∼7 × AgGaS 2 , placing it among the highest-known SHG-active chalcogenides. No symmetry lowering is observed down to 100 K in single-crystal X-ray diffraction, although an anomalous expansion in the b-axis lattice parameter occurs and may be correlated to lattice modes of the SiSe 4 tetrahedra. We investigate the physical properties of Eu 2 SiSe 4 using magnetometry and heat capacity measurements and find a transition to an antiferromagnetic ground state at T N ≈ 5.5 K. The low-temperature transition releases less entropy than expected, which may be due to the complex crystal electric field effects of Eu(II).

Ternary Complexes of BiI 3 /CuI and SbI 3 /CuI with Tetrahydrothiophene

Reactions of BiI 3 /CuI mixtures with tetrahydrothiophene (THT) in toluene produce 2-D sheet networks BiCu 3 I 6 (THT) n (n = 2, 3, or 4), depending on reaction conditions. All three structures are based on BiI 6 octahedra, which share pairs of (μ 2 -I) 2 with Cu 3 (THT) n units. BiCu 3 I 6 (THT) 2 features Cu 2 (μ 2 -I) 2 rhombs with close Cu···Cu interactions and is accompanied by formation of the very complex HBi 3 Cu 12 I 22 (THT) 8 . Reactions of SbI 3 /CuI with THT in toluene produced a SbCu 3 I 6 (THT) 2 network shows Cu 3 (μ 2 -THT) 2 units, like its Bi congener, but Cu 6 (μ 2 -I) 6 barrels rather than rhombs. Isolated SbI 3 units are stacked above the Cu 6 I 6 barrels. A molecular compound, Sb 3 Cu 3 I 12 (THT) 6 consists of a face-sharing Sb 3 I 12 stack, in which the Cu-THT units are bonded in asymmetric fashion about the central SbI 6 . Metal-halide bonds were investigated via QTAIM and NLMO analyses, demonstrating that these bonds are largely ionic and occur between the Bi/Sb and I p orbitals. Hirshfeld analysis shows significant H···H and H···I interactions. Diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) reveals band edges for the Bi species of 1.71–1.82 eV, while those for the neutral Sb complexes are in the range of 1.94–2.06 eV. Mapping of the electronic structure via density of state calculations indicates population of antibonding Bi/Sb–I orbitals in the excited state.

Field-Driven Simulations to Probe the Impact of Ionic Correlations on Solution Transport Coefficients in Binary, Ternary, and Reciprocal Quaternary Aqueous Electrolytes

Ionic correlations play a critical role in governing transport properties of mixed-salt aqueous electrolyte solutions, yet their quantitative characterization remains challenging, particularly for multicomponent aqueous systems. Here, we develop a general nonequilibrium molecular dynamics framework to efficiently compute Onsager transport coefficients and ionic correlations in mixed-salt aqueous solutions. Using field-driven simulations, we obtain accurate Onsager matrices for LiCl/ KCl, KCl/KBr, and LiBr/KCl electrolyte solutions with significantly reduced computational cost relative to equilibrium Green−Kubo methods. The framework enables direct assessment of how attractive cation−anion and repulsive like-ion interactions contribute to conductivity and salt diffusivity across compositions. While static ion pairing exhibits strong composition dependence, dynamic ion correlations remain nearly invariant, leading to constant deviations from Nernst−Einstein predictions. These results highlight the disconnect between static ion association and dynamic transport correlations, and they establish a transferable approach for analyzing ion transport in complex electrolyte environments relevant to separation processes and electrochemical systems.
