Health Education Telecommunications Experiment

The Health/Education Telecommunications Experiment carried out with Applications Technology Satellite-6 is described. The experiment tested the effectiveness of color television broadcasts to over 120 low-cost receivers in rural areas. Five types of earth stations were involved: receive-only terminals (ROT), an intensive terminal consisting of the ROT plus a VHF transmitter and receiver; comprehensive S and C-band terminals having the capability of transmitting the video signal plus four audio channels; and the main originating stations. Additional supporting elements comprise 120 video receive terminals, 51 telephony transceivers, and 8 video originating terminals of 3 different parts. Technical parameters were measured to within 1 dB of the calculated values.

Early performance of the 12-GHz, 200-watt transmitter experiment package in the communications technology satellite

Measured performance characteristics of the transmitter experiment package (TEP) aboard the Communications Technology Satellite for the first 90 operating days in orbit are presented. The TEP consists of a nominal 200-watt output stage tube (OST), a supporting power processing system (PPS), and a variable-conductance heat pipe system (VCHPS). The OST, a traveling-wave tube augmented with a 10-stage depressed collector, has an overall saturated average efficiency of 51.5 percent and an average saturated radiofrequency (RF) output power at center-band frequency of 240 watts. The PPS operated with a measured efficiency of 86.5 percent to 88.5 percent. The VCHPS, using three pipes to conduct heat from the PPS and the body of the OST to a 52-centimeter by 124-centimeter (20.5-in. by 48.75-in.) radiator fin, maintained by the PPS baseplate temperature below 50 C for all operating conditions. The TEP performance characteristics presented include frequency response, RF output power, efficiency, and distortions. Communications characteristics were evaluated by using both video and audio modulated signals.

Auroral hiss on the ground at L approximately equal to 4

Auroral hiss is rarely detected at subauroral-zone ground stations, but during the 4-month period January to April 1976 it became very prevalent in the wide-band audio-frequency synoptic whistler records at Farewell, Alaska (L = 4.2). A possible reason for this is that in the normal reduction and retreat of auroral zone effects to higher latitudes at sunspot minimum the reduction in the particle precipitation which causes auroral absorption is greater than that in the softer precipitation which causes auroral hiss. The occurrence of auroral hiss at Farewell showed, at 21 hours LMT (local magnetic time), the same strong diurnal peak found at auroral zone and polar cap stations. The low-frequency cutoff of auroral hiss on the ground is also discussed.

A digitally implemented communications experiment utilizing the Hermes (CTS) satellite

The Hermes (CTS) experiment program made possible a significant effort directed toward new developments which will reduce the costs associated with the distribution of satellite services. Advanced satellite transponder technology and small inexpensive earth terminals were demonstrated as part of the Hermes program. Another system element that holds promise for reduced transmission cost is associated with the communication link implementation. An experiment is described which uses CTS to demonstrate digital link implementation and its advantages over conventional analog systems. A Digitally Implemented Communications experiment which demonstrates the flexibility and efficiency of digital transmission of television video and audio, telephone voice and high-bit-rate data is also described. Presentation of the experiment concept which concentrates on the evaluation of full-duplex digital television in the teleconferencing environment is followed by a description of unique equipment that was developed.

Robotics control using isolated word recognition of voice input

A speech input/output system is presented that can be used to communicate with a task oriented system. Human speech commands and synthesized voice output extend conventional information exchange capabilities between man and machine by utilizing audio input and output channels. The speech input facility is comprised of a hardware feature extractor and a microprocessor implemented isolated word or phrase recognition system. The recognizer offers a medium sized (100 commands), syntactically constrained vocabulary, and exhibits close to real time performance. The major portion of the recognition processing required is accomplished through software, minimizing the complexity of the hardware feature extractor.

Evaluation of several secondary tasks in the determination of permissible time delays in simulator visual and motion cues

The effect of secondary tasks in determining permissible time delays in visual-motion simulation of a pursuit tracking task was examined. A single subject, a single set of aircraft handling qualities, and a single motion condition in tracking a target aircraft that oscillates sinusoidally in altitude were used. In addition to the basic simulator delays the results indicate that the permissible time delay is about 250 msec for either a tapping task, an adding task, or an audio task and is approximately 125 msec less than when no secondary task is involved. The magnitudes of the primary task performance measures, however, differ only for the tapping task. A power spectraldensity analysis basically confirms the result by comparing the root-mean-square performance measures. For all three secondary tasks, the total pilot workload was quite high.

Discrete time domain modelling and analysis of dc-dc converters with continuous and discontinuous inductor current

Using discrete time state variable representation, a generalized computer-aided modeling and analysis of dc-dc converters is presented. The methodology provides exact modeling and is applicable to all types of power stages and duty-cycle control, including continuous and discontinuous inductor current operation. Converter stability, transient behavior and audio susceptibility can be analytically evaluated and predicted. The generalized theory of the proposed approach to converter modeling and analysis is presented first, followed by a demonstrative example applying the theory to a constant frequency buck converter operating in continuous and discontinuous inductor current mode. Excellent agreement with laboratory test data has been observed.

Utilization of NASA Lewis mobile terminals for the Hermes satellite

The paper describes the portable earth terminal (PET) and the transportable earth terminal (TET) which enable two-way television and voice communication. Both terminals were developed by NASA and utilize the high power of the Hermes satellite. PET is a bus-type vehicle which has receiving equipment for full duplex color television and which can transmit programs originating in either the on-board PET studio or in nearby buildings. PET has a collapsible 2.4-m diameter parabolic antenna interfacing with a 500-watt 14-GHz wideband TV transmitter and a 12-GHz wideband TV receiver system. TET uses two parabolic reflector antennas, 3 m and 1.2 m in diameter, mounted on a flat trailer towed by a truck. TET can receive and relay color TV signals, and its narrowband transmitter can serve as a return audio link permitting a question-and-answer format. Also described are uplink and downlink performance characteristics, operation procedures, and field demonstrations which enabled personnel at several hospitals to participate in a distant medical conference.

Characteristics of integrated MOM junctions at dc and at optical frequencies

A new metal-oxide-metal device (Ni-NiO-Ni, Edge MOM) which is stable, reproducibly fabricated, and with a 10 to the -10th sq cm tunneling area is presented. Performing detection experiments, the device's nonlinear I-V characteristic is shown to be invariant at audio frequencies, 10.6, 3.39, and 0.6328 microns. Similar devices with 10 to the -8th sq cm tunneling areas perform as well as the Edge MOM's in the visible and the near-infrared range, but deteriorate in performance at the 10-micron range. A dominant competing effect is a thermal-induced signal, which increases with frequency and temperature. Coupling mechanisms at the various regimes are investigated. The device can serve as a broad-band detector and mixer, and might in the future be a basic element of broad-band amplifiers and oscillators.

Displays for supervisory control of manipulators

The problem of displaying information generated by sensors attached to the terminal device of a remotely controlled manipulator is considered. The sensors under consideration are proximity, force-torque, tactile and slip-page sensors. The paper describes and evaluates several examples that have been implemented in the JPL teleoperator project using audio and graphic displays of information generated by four proximity sensors attached to a manipulator end effector. Design schemes are also discussed related to the display of information generated by a six-dimensional force-torque sensor, a multipoint proportional tactile sensor, and a directional slippage sensor. The paper concludes with a discussion of future integrated displays of visual (TV) and handbased sensor information.

Telemedicine: An expanding new science on land and sea

Several medical and technical men in San Diego County are concerned with the need in many rural communities for a 24-hour day, 7-days a week access to adequate medical care. People isolated from urban areas by travel-times of 40-minutes tend to delay seeking early and effective medical care. The authors were able to assemble quality technology which permits narrow-band video-pictures, better known in the CB trade as ROBOT slow-scan television (SSTV), to be transmitted over telephone lines, by micro-wave, through satellite-bounce, or by HF-radio. These 'ROBOT' pictures can be accompanied with explanatory audio communication and with diagnostic signals from electronic instruments.
