Testing of brazed and welded connections of stainless-steel tubing

Test procedures and results are given for three types of semipermanent sleeve-type connections for stainless-steel tubing. Subject to the limited resistances to corrosion and vibration, all three types are found to be suitable for extremes in reliability and environment, if given close control during manufacture.

Ultrasonic scanning system for in-place inspection of brazed-tube joints

System detects defects of .051 cm in diameter and larger. System incorporates scanning head assembly including boot enclosed transducer, slip ring assembly, drive mechanism, and servotransmitter. Ultrasonic flaw detector, prototype recorder, and special recorder complete system.

Copper/nickel eutectic brazing of titanium

Technique joins titanium or one of its alloys to materials, such as iron, nickel or cobalt base material, or to refractory metals. To ensure formation of a satisfactory bond, the temperature, time, environment and pressure must be controlled.

Welding and brazing of nickel and nickel-base alloys

The joining of four types of nickel-base materials is described: (1) high-nickel, nonheat-treatable alloys, (2) solid-solution-hardening nickel-base alloys, (3) precipitation-hardening nickel-base alloys, and (4) dispersion-hardening nickel-base alloys. The high-nickel and solid-solution-hardening alloys are widely used in chemical containers and piping. These materials have excellent resistance to corrosion and oxidation, and retain useful strength at elevated temperatures. The precipitation-hardening alloys have good properties at elevated temperature. They are important in many aerospace applications. Dispersion-hardening nickel also is used for elevated-temperature service.

Low-cost tool set for removing brazed fittings

Set includes crimping tool and pull tube. Crimping tool is modified vise-grip pliers which has special jaws designed to crimp fittings. Pull tube has single thread on each end. Tube can be used once on each end before discarding.

Tool removes brazed fittings

Device, which removes fittings from thin-walled tubing, will not accidentally bond to fitting, nor will it cause tube wall to melt. Key feature is the use of expendable split-ring heat sink insert. Technique is applicable to fitting stubs of all sizes and wall thicknesses.

High-temperature brazing of stainless steel

Prevention of iron contamination of platens is eliminated by placing alumina/silica ceramic-fiber blankets between platens and carbon-steel plate. Carbon-steel plates provide rigidity and improve heat transfer.

Form die and glide plates for vacuum brazing

Die for fabricating steel retorts is made from commercial plywood with steel facing. Smooth-finished glide plates prevent partial bonding of plates to stainless-steel parts.

Some properties of low-vapor-pressure braze alloys for thermionic converters

Property measurements were made for arc-melted, rod-shaped specimens. Density and dc electrical resistivity at 296 K were measured for various binary eutectic alloys. Thermal conductivity was inferred from the electrical conductivity using the Wiedemann, Franz, Lorenz relation. Linear thermal expansion from 293 K to two-thirds melting point, under a helium atmosphere, was measured for Zr, 21.7-wt percent Ru; Zr, 13-wt percent W; Zr, 22.3-wt percent Nb; Nb, 66.9-wt percent Ru; and Zr, 25.7-wt percent Ta.
