Shape evolution in even-mass 98-104 Zr isotopes via lifetime measurements using the $\gamma \gamma $-coincidence technique

The Zirconium (Z = 40) isotopic chain has attracted interest for more than four decades. The abrupt lowering of the energy of the first 2 + state and the increase in the transition strength B(E2; 2$^+_1$ →0$^+_1$) going from 98 Zr to 100 Zr has been the first example of “quantum phase transition” in nuclear shapes, which has few equivalents in the nuclear chart. Although a multitude of experiments have been performed to measure nuclear properties related to nuclear shapes and collectivity in the region, none of the measured lifetimes were obtained using the Recoil Distance Doppler Shift method in the γγ-coincidence mode where a gate on the direct feeding transition of the state of interest allows a strict control of systematical errors. Here this work reports the results of lifetime measurements for the first yrast excited states in 98-104 Zr carried out to extract reduced transition probabilities. The new lifetime values in γγ-coincidence and γ-single mode are compared with the results of former experiments. Recent predictions of the Interacting Boson Model with Configuration Mixing, the Symmetry Conserving Configuration Mixing model based on the Hartree–Fock–Bogoliubov approach and the Monte Carlo Shell Model are presented and compared with the experimental data.

The nucleardatapy toolkit for simple access to experimental nuclear data, astrophysical observations, and theoretical predictions

Systematic comparisons across theoretical predictions for the properties of dense matter, nuclear physics data, and astrophysical observations (also called meta-analyses) are performed. Existing predictions for symmetric nuclear and neutron matter properties are considered, and they are shown in this paper as an illustration of the present knowledge. Asymmetric matter is constructed assuming the isospin asymmetry quadratic approximation. It is employed to predict the pressure at twice saturation energy-density based only on nuclear-physics constraints, and we find it compatible with the one from the gravitational-wave community. To make our meta-analysis transparent, updated in the future, and to publicly share our results, the Python toolkit nucleardatapy is described and released here. Hence, this paper accompanies nucleardatapy, which simplifies access to nuclear-physics data, including theoretical calculations, experimental measurements, and astrophysical observations. This Python toolkit is designed to easily provide data for: (i) predictions for uniform matter (from microscopic or phenomenological approaches); (ii) correlation among nuclear properties induced by experimental and theoretical constraints; (iii) measurements for finite nuclei (nuclear chart, charge radii, neutron skins or nuclear incompressibilities, etc.) and hypernuclei (single particle energies); and (iv) astrophysical observations. This toolkit provides data in a unified format for easy comparison and provides new meta-analysis tools. It will be continuously developed, and we expect contributions from the community in our endeavor.

Axions beyond Gen 2

The QCD (Quantum ChromoDynamics) axion emerged as one of the best-motivated dark matter candidates. In 2018, the Axion Dark Matter eXperiment (ADMX), one of the U.S. Department of Energy’s “Gen 2” flagship dark-matter projects, demonstrated first sensitivity to the highly plausible “DFSZ” dark matter axion couplings over a small frequency range. We anticipate this development marks the first step in constructing yet more powerful experiments that can explore large swaths of the axion parameter space at high sensitivity and result in a discovery. But, realizing this requires advances in both our understanding of the theory and experiment design. Between 25 January and 27 January 2021, the “Axions Beyond Gen 2 Workshop” was held, where selected members of the community discussed our broad understanding of the QCD axion and charted a course for future experiments having sensitivity and mass reach well beyond the current “Gen 2” experiments. These proceedings are summaries of the topics presented and discussed.

The (R)evolution of Scientific Workflows in the Agentic AI Era: Towards Autonomous Science

Modern scientific discovery increasingly requires coordinating distributed facilities and heterogeneous resources, forcing researchers to act as manual workflow coordinators rather than scientists. Advances in AI leading to AI agents show exciting new opportunities that can accelerate scientific discovery by providing intelligence as a component in the ecosystem. However, it is unclear how this new capability would materialize and integrate in the real world. To address this, we propose a conceptual framework where workflows evolve along two dimensions which are intelligence (from static to intelligent) and composition (from single to swarm) to chart an evolutionary path from current workflow management systems to fully autonomous scientific laboratories. With these trajectories in mind, we present an architectural blueprint that can help the community take the next steps towards harnessing the opportunities in autonomous science with the potential for 100x discovery acceleration and transformational scientific workflows.

coloring v.1.0

SAND2024-02435O The software coloring allows applications written in the C++ language to generate publication-quality 2D plots. Its functionality is similar to Microsoft Excel's chart functionality or the Python language's matplotlib package. The value of coloring is that it is written purely in C++ and thus can be compiled on systems where Python is not available and linked into high performance computing software. For drawing shapes onto an image, coloring uses the mathematical definition of quadratic Bezier splines and uses Newton's method to search for the closest point on a spline to a given query point. This is then used to do accurate sub-pixel sampling to get clean, non-pixelated images. For working with the actual plot data, coloring has basic statistical methods such as finding maxima and minima as well as axis scaling such as logarithms. AIF for Vis (Active Inference for simulating human interpretation of data visualization) [SWR-26-084]

AIF for Vis contains the Active Inference models and analysis scripts used to study a simple visualization-interpretation task: estimating the average value of two bars in a bar chart. The work is a proof of concept for translating hypothesized cognitive strategies into executable, inspectable process models. We implement two idealized strategies inspired by dual-process accounts of visualization-aided decision making: *Fast model: a compressed, heuristic strategy that estimates the visual midpoint of the two bars and maintains a single belief over their average. *Slow model: a sequential, analytic strategy that estimates the two bar heights separately and maintains them in working memory before computing an average. Both models use a common Active-Inference-inspired framework for sequential perception, belief updating, action selection, and reporting. Their different internal representations produce distinct predicted vulnerabilities: *the Fast model is more susceptible to tick-salience bias; *the Slow model is more susceptible to working-memory decay. The repository includes the model implementations, scripts used for the experiments reported in the paper, precomputed trial-level results, and plotting scripts.

CO2 Handling & Electrolyzer Efficiency Scaling Evaluator

CHEESE is an interactive dashboard tool for estimating the performance and material requirements of carbon dioxide electrolysis systems. It helps users evaluate how electrode area, current density, product selectivity, gas flow, cell voltage, and the number of cells in a stack affect system operation. The dashboard provides simple and advanced modes so it can be used for both quick estimates and more detailed engineering analysis. Users can estimate product output, carbon dioxide use, electrical power, electrode area, gas and liquid flow rates, energy efficiency, material cost per test, and the effect of scaling from a single cell to a multi cell stack. It also includes tools for examining carbon balance, equipment durability, component replacement, and changes in performance over time. This is intended to help both academia and industry researchers who are either getting into CO2 electrolysis on lab-scale or are trying to establish a larger footprint. CHEESE presents results through tables, charts, and simplified cell and stack diagrams. It is intended to support research planning, experimental design, comparison of operating conditions, and early stage scale up studies.

Strain-concentration for fast, compact photonic modulation and non-volatile memory

A critical figure of merit (FoM) for electro-optic (EO) modulators is the transmission change per voltage, d T / d V . Conventional approaches in wave-guided modulators maximize d T / d V via a high EO coefficient or longer light-material interaction lengths but are ultimately limited by material losses and nonlinearities. Optical and RF resonances improve d T / d V at the cost of spectral non-uniformity, especially for high- Q optical cavity resonances. Here, we introduce an EO modulator based on piezo-strain-concentration of a photonic crystal cavity to address both trade-offs: (i) it eliminates the trade-off between d T / d V and waveguide loss—i.e., enhancement of the resonance tuning efficiency d v c / d V for the fixed EO coefficient, waveguide length, and cavity Q —and (ii) at high DC strains it exhibits a non-volatile (NV) cavity tuning Δ v c ,NV for passive memory and programming of multiple devices into resonance despite fabrication variations. The device is fabricated on a scalable silicon nitride-on-aluminum nitride platform. We measure d v c / d V =177±1MHz/V, corresponding to Δ v c =40±0.32GHz for a voltage spanning ±120V with an energy consumption of δ U /Δ v c =0.17nW/GHz. The modulation bandwidth is flat up to ω BW,3dB /2 π =3.2±0.07MHz for broadband DC-AC and 142±17MHz for resonant operation near a 2.8 GHz mechanical resonance. Optical extinction up to 25 dB is obtained via Fano-type interference. Strain-induced beam-buckling modes are programmable under a “read-write” protocol with a continuous, repeatable tuning range of 5±0.25GHz, allowing for storage and retrieval, which we quantify with mutual information of 2.4 bits and a maximum non-volatile excursion of 8 GHz. Using a full piezo-optical finite-element-model (FEM) we identify key design principles for optimizing strain-based modulators and chart a path towards achieving performance comparable to lithium niobate-based modulators and the study of high strain physics on-chip.

Enabling AI in synthetic biology through Construction File specification

The Construction File (CF) specification establishes a standardized interface for molecular biology operations, laying a foundation for automation and enhanced efficiency in experiment design. It is implemented across three distinct software projects: PyDNA_CF_Simulator, a Python project featuring a ChatGPT plugin for interactive parsing and simulating experiments; ConstructionFileSimulator, a field-tested Java project that showcases 'Experiment' objects expressed as flat files; and C6-Tools, a JavaScript project integrated with Google Sheets via Apps Script, providing a user-friendly interface for authoring and simulation of CF. The CF specification not only standardizes and modularizes molecular biology operations but also promotes collaboration, automation, and reuse, significantly reducing potential errors. The potential integration of CF with artificial intelligence, particularly GPT-4, suggests innovative automation strategies for synthetic biology. While challenges such as token limits, data storage, and biosecurity remain, proposed solutions promise a way forward in harnessing AI for experiment design. This shift from human-driven design to AI-assisted workflows, steered by high-level objectives, charts a potential future path in synthetic biology, envisioning an environment where complexities are managed more effectively.
