Renewable Thermal Energy Systems Designed for Industrial Process Solutions in Multiple Industries

Industrial decarbonization is a key area that must be accelerated, to foster the removal of fossil fuels from the provision of heat, especially at low temperatures less than 300 degrees C. This paper looks at the results of two case studies for understanding the economics and potential for renewable thermal energy systems (RTES), particularly in hybrid configurations to provide industrial process heat (IPH). The first case study looks at heat pumps for district heating, and the second, the use of linear Fresnel collectors (LFCs) coupled with phase change material (PCM) thermal energy storage (TES) for direct steam generation (DSG). Using district heat as an input for the heat pump, three cases were run harvesting energy from ambient water (5 degrees C), sewage water (20 degrees C), and a solar collector (35 degrees C). Accounting for elevated costs of infrastructure for each heat source, the levelized cost of heat (LCOH) of the first case study ranged from $4-$15 per million British Thermal Units (MMBTU). For the second case study modeling LFCs with PCM and TES, the results show that a LCOH of $9-$15 per MMBTU is possible, depending on the direct normal irradiance.

Assessing the Optical Performance Impact of Tracking Error in an Operational Concentrated Solar Power Plant Using Monte Carlo Ray-Tracing Simulation

Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) provides firm and dispatchable electricity due to its thermal storage and hybridization capabilities, which supports the decarbonization of our energy supply. Of the various CSP technologies, parabolic trough collectors are the most mature, with over 500 MW operating worldwide. The optical performance of parabolic trough systems is sensitive to tracking error, which is defined as the angular offset of a collector away from the sun position in the transversal plane. Tracking error commonly occurs due to non-continuous adjustment of the trough angle to point toward the sun, but other factors such as gravity, heating, and wind loading can also contribute to tracking error. Researchers have explored the impact of tracking error on optical performance both numerically and experimentally, but existing studies do not include measurements from operational utility-scale power plants. Tilt angle measurements of parabolic troughs at operational utility-scale power plants illustrate spatial variations in optical performance and include various sources of tracking error such as gravity, heating, and wind loading. To fully characterize wind driven loads on parabolic troughs, we are conducting a long-term field measurement campaign at the Nevada Solar One CSP plant located in Boulder City, NV, which has a nominal capacity of 72 MW and 0.5 hours of full-load storage. We record load measurements on four outer trough rows, collecting support structure bending moments, drive torque moments, dynamic accelerations of the spaceframe, mirror displacement, and tilt angles. Using the tilt measurements acquired at 20 Hz frequency, we calculate the deviation between the nominal sun position and the tracker angle. Using a Monte-Carlo ray-tracing simulation software, we assess the impact of the tracker angle deviation on optical performance throughout the diurnal cycle at various spatial locations within the CSP plant. In our view, this first-of-a-kind study will provide important guidance for future trough designs that reduce the impact of various sources of tracking error on performance.

Amphiphilic Block Copolymers for Flocculation and Hydrophobization of Legacy Waste Suspensions in Flotation Driven Dewatering Operations

There exists a degrading legacy fuel pond at the Sellafield site (UK), known as the First-Generation Magnox Storage Pond (FGMSP). After being placed into a passive care and maintenance regime resulting in a long storage period, the fuel rods, primarily their cladding, corroded in the pond forming magnesium hydroxide based sludges and suspended material. These ponds are a grave concern to the British government in terms of hazard and risk reduction. Therefore, decommissioning of these ponds is a top priority beginning with the contaminant retrievals process [1]. The pond has accumulated significant quantities of waste materials amongst the skips of fuel, including but not limited to: large inventories of corroded Magnox sludge, fuel rod fragments, metal fragments (from fuel skips), concrete degradation products (from the pond infrastructure), wind-blown sand, and other materials such as bird guano and animal remains. This challenge requires a chemically robust technology to complete sludge retrievals [2]. As nuclear is different, a more stringent process operation criteria is required. From the criteria, flotation was selected as a viable technology. Flotation involves the application of collector molecules which modify the hydrophobicity of suspended particles allowing them to adsorb to rising bubbles. As some particles lack inertia for flotation due to their size, dual flocculant/collector agents can be deployed for greater particle recovery, in this case, amphiphilic diblock copolymers. Two copolymers of Poly(acrylic acid)-b-poly(n-butyl acrylate) (or PAA-b-PnBA), of different hydrophobic chain lengths (PBA) were synthesized for flotation campaigns. Flotation has shown promise to be a valuable rapid dewatering strategy for decommissioning of legacy waste ponds whilst upholding the required operational criteria. This research has shown: PAA-b-PnBA copolymers promote flocculation of Mg(OH){sub 2} particulates. Diblock copolymers retain more fluid than traditional surfactant based collectors wrt. relative particulate recovery performance- where longer PnBA chain length polymers performed best. Performance appears to be hydrodynamically limited due to over-flocculation of Mg(OH){sub 2}. Potential to combine with sedimentation for high particle recovery with low fluid carryover.

System and method for engineered ceramic packages for use in fluid treatment technologies

The present disclosure relates to a method for making a ceramic mini-tube configured for use in a fluid modification system. The method involves using an electrospinning system to receive a quantity of precursor solution. The electrospinning system creates an electric field which causes the precursor solution, when emitted, to be stretched into a fiber jet. The fiber jet is deposited on a collector resulting in a fiber mat. The fiber mat is removed from the collector, wherein the fiber mat is formed into a shape. The fiber mat is further processed so that the fiber mat retains a desired shape. A heat treatment operation is then performed to convert the fiber mat into a ceramic structure having the desired shape.
