Chip-scale frequency combs for data communications in computing systems

Recent developments in chip-based frequency-comb technology demonstrate that comb devices can be implemented in applications where photonic integration and power efficiency are required. The large number of equally spaced comb lines that are generated make combs ideal for use in communication systems, where each line can serve as an optical carrier to allow for massively parallel wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) transmission. In this review, we summarize the developments in integrated frequency-comb technology for use as a WDM source for communication systems in data centers and high-performance computing systems. We highlight the following three approaches for chip-scale comb generation: semiconductor modelocked lasers, electro-optic combs, and Kerr frequency combs.

Component Importance and Interdependence Analysis for Transmission, Distribution and Communication Systems

For critical infrastructure restoration planning, the real-time scheduling and coordination of system restoration efforts, the key in decision-making is to prioritize those critical components that are out of service during the restoration. For this purpose, there is a need for component importance analysis. While it has been investigated extensively for individual systems, component importance considering interdependence among transmission, distribution and communication (T&D&C) systems has not been systematically analyzed and widely adopted. In this study, we propose a component importance assessment method in the context of interdependence between T&D&C networks. Analytic methods for multilayer networks and a set of metrics have been applied for assessing the component importance and interdependence between T&D&C networks based on their physical characteristics. The proposed methodology is further validated with integrated synthetic Illinois regional transmission, distribution, and communication (T&D&C) systems, the results reveal the unique characteristics of component/node importance, which are strongly affected by the network topologies and cross-domain node mapping.

Enabling Interoperable SCADA Communications for PV Inverters through Embedded Controllers

The percentage integration of photovoltaic (PV) inverters in the field has increased significantly in the past 5 years. Regardless of the size of the PV plants and the inverters (residential vs. commercial), it is becoming crucial that these devices have the capability to communicate with peers (other smart devices) and with components that are at a hierarchy above the inverters (e.g., supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems, distributed controllers, and data managers). This project aims to develop a standard SCADA software code for inverters’ embedded controllers that will enable interoperability with other components in the system. To achieve this, the code will be developed using two different protocols: Distributed Network Protocol 3 and International Electrotechnical Commission 61850. The developed code is aimed to be deployed in simple embedded controllers. It will be tested in the National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s (NREL’s) Energy Systems Integration Facility. The tested code will then be made available through Triangle MicroWorks’s (TMW’s) software platform. The primary objectives of this project include training the NREL team with TMW’s embedded controller libraries, developing an interoperable communication code for embedded controllers, successfully testing and deploying the code, and demonstrating the newly developed code in a conference.

Visualization for Scientific Discovery, Decision-Making, and Communication

Visualization–the use of visual elements to explore data, form hypotheses, or convey conclusions–is an integral part of the scientific process. Starting from an initial exploration of new data to illustrating outcomes to the general public, visualization is one of the most intuitive and powerful modes of communication. With the explosion of new data sources and types, unprecedented volumes of data, and new technologies, such as virtual reality and AI, visualization has become increasingly essential but also ever more challenging. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Advanced Scientific Computing Research (ASCR) sponsored a Basic Research Needs workshop in January 2022 to understand the major opportunities and grand challenges in visualization tools and technologies for scientific computing, with a special focus on DOE-relevant applications and goals. The workshop identified five priority research directions (PRDs) for visualization to support scientific discovery, decision-making, and communication.

We present our findings of the red team exercise conducted on the device and application developed by Guardian Sensors, Inc. (GSI) and Noventum. The app is used for situational awareness and control of photovoltaics (PV) and microgrid energy systems. The assessments performed are practical case scenarios that assess the risks and vulnerabilities posed by the app through targeted activities that could be engaged by an adversary. The assessment team’s results and recommendations are provided to inform on and mitigate the identified weaknesses to improve secure user authentication, connections, and communications. The recommendations in this report are not intended to be a security panacea but will add the desired defense-in-depth layer to securing communication of such interconnected systems.

Modeling Communication Infrastructures of Cyber Physical Systems

This effort explores modeling cyber infrastructure, including communication devices like switches, routers, sensors, and controllers, and physical media attributes like propagation of radio signals, in coordination with power distribution system model layouts. To do this, the project studies real-world configurations to define axioms of how different communication media is deployed with control equipment. These axioms will be used to develop tools to generate realistic cyber infrastructure models from starting power system models. This effort leverages and builds on the co-simulation platform developed by the other RD2C projects. The axioms and tools will be validated and demonstrated with the NS3 simulation tool as part of a co-simulation to show the behavior/impacts of cyber infrastructure on control operations.

Masked Symbol Modeling for Demodulation of Oversampled Baseband Communication Signals in Impulsive Noise-Dominated Channels

Recent breakthroughs in natural language processing show that attention mech- anism in Transformer networks, trained via masked-token prediction, enables models to capture the semantic context of the tokens and internalize the grammar of language. While the application of Transformers to communication systems is a burgeoning field, the notion of context within physical waveforms remains under-explored. This paper addresses that gap by re-examining inter-symbol con- tribution (ISC) caused by pulse-shaping overlap. Rather than treating ISC as a nuisance, we view it as a deterministic source of contextual information embedded in oversampled complex baseband signals. We propose Masked Symbol Model- ing (MSM), a framework for the physical (PHY) layer inspired by Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers methodology. In MSM, a subset of symbol-aligned samples is randomly masked, and a Transformer predicts the missing symbol identifiers using the surrounding “in-between” samples. Through this objective, the model learns the latent syntax of complex baseband waveforms. We illustrate MSM’s potential by applying it to the task of demodulating sig- nals corrupted by impulsive noise, where the model infers corrupted segments by leveraging the learned context. Our results suggest a path toward receivers that interpret, rather than merely detect communication signals, opening new avenues for context-aware PHY layer design.

Optimization of Asynchronous Communication Operations through Eager Notifications

UPC++ is a C++ library implementing the Asynchronous Partitioned Global Address Space (APGAS) model. We propose an enhancement to the completion mechanisms of UPC++ used to synchronize communication operations that is designed to reduce overhead for on-node operations. Our enhancement permits eager delivery of completion notification in cases where the data transfer semantics of an operation happen to complete synchronously, for example due to the use of shared-memory bypass. This semantic relaxation allows removing significant overhead from the critical path of the implementation in such cases. We evaluate our results on three different representative systems using a combination of microbenchmarks and five variations of the the HPCChallenge RandomAccess benchmark implemented in UPC++ and run on a single node to accentuate the impact of locality. We find that in RMA versions of the benchmark written in a straightforward manner (without manually optimizing for locality), the new eager notification mode can provide up to a 25% speedup when synchronizing with promises and up to a 13.5x speedup when synchronizing with conjoined futures. We also evaluate our results using a graph matching application written with UPC++ RMA communication, where we measure overall speedups of as much as 11% in single-node runs of the unmodified application code, due to our transparent enhancements.

Unsupervised Detection of SOC Spoofing in OCPP 2.0.1 EV Charging Communication Protocol Using One-Class SVM

The electric vehicles (EVs) market keeps growing globally; thus, it is critical to secure the EV charging communication protocols in order to guarantee reliable and fair charging operations among the customers. The Open Charge Point Protocol (OCPP) 2.0.1 supports the communication between the Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE) and Charging Station Management Systems (CSMSs); therefore, it becomes vulnerable to several types of attacks, which aim to jeopardize smart charging, billing, and energy management. Specifically, OCPP 2.0.1 allows the self-reporting of the State of Charge (SOC) values, which makes it vulnerable to spoofing-based cyberattacks, which target manipulating the scheduling priorities, distorting the load forecasts, and extending the charging sessions in an unfair manner. In this paper, we try to address this type of attack by providing a comprehensive analysis of the SOC spoofing attacks and introducing a novel unsupervised detection framework based on the One-Class Support Vector Machine (OCSVM) algorithm. Specifically, two types of attack scenarios are analyzed (i.e., priority manipulation and session extension) by deriving engineered features that capture the nonlinear relationships under normal charging behavior. Detailed simulation-based results are derived by utilizing the DESL-EPFL Level 3 EV charging dataset. Our results demonstrate high F1-score and recall in identifying spoofed SOC values and that the proposed OCSVM model demonstrates superior performance compared to alternative clustering and deep-learning based detectors.

Long-Range Allosteric Communication Modulated by Active Site Mn(II) Coordination Drives Catalysis in Xanthobacter autotrophicus Acetone Carboxylase

Acetone carboxylase (AC) from Xanthobacter autotrophicus is a 360 KDa α2β2γ2 heterohexamer that catalyzes the ATP-dependent formation of phosphorylated acetone and bicarbonate intermediates that react at Mn(II) metal active sites to form acetoacetate. Structural models of X. autotrophicus AC (XaAC) with and without nucleotides reveal that the binding and phosphorylation of the two substrates occurs ~40 Å from the Mn(II) active sites where acetoacetate is formed. Based on the crystal structures, a significant conformational change was proposed to open and close a tunnel that facilitates the passage of reaction intermediates between the sites for nucleotide binding and phosphorylation of substrates and Mn(II) sites of acetoacetate formation. We have employed electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), kinetic assays, and hydrogen/deuterium exchange mass spectrometry (HDX-MS) of poised ligand-bound states and site-specific amino acid variants to complete an in-depth analysis of Mn(II) coordination and allosteric communication throughout the catalytic cycle. In contrast with the established paradigms for carboxylation, our analyses of XaAC suggested a carboxylate shift that couples both local and long-range structural transitions. Shifts in the coordination mode of a single carboxylic acid residue (αE89) mediate both catalysis proximal to a Mn(II) center and communication with an ATP active site in a separate subunit of a 180 kDa α2β2γ2 complex at a distance of 40 Å. This work demonstrates the power of combining structural models from X-ray crystallography with solution-phase spectroscopy and biophysical techniques to elucidate functional aspects of a multi-subunit enzyme.

Integrating Radio-Over-Fiber Communication System and BOTDR Sensor System

In this paper, we propose and experimentally demonstrate for the first time, the integration of a radio-over-fiber (RoF) communication system and a Brillouin optical time-domain reflectometry (BOTDR) distributed sensor system using a single optical fiber link. In this proof-of-concept integrated system, the communication system is composed of three modulation formats of quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK), 16-quadrature amplitude modulation (16-QAM) and 64-QAM, which are modulated onto an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signal. Whereas, the BOTDR sensor system is used for strain and/or temperature monitoring over the fiber distance with a spatial resolution of 5 m using a 25 km single-mode silica fiber. The error vector magnitude (EVM) is analyzed in three modulation formats in the presence of various BOTDR input pump powers. Using QPSK modulation, optimized 18 dBm sensing and 10 dBm data power, the measured EVM values with and without bandpass filter are 3.5% and 14.5%, respectively. The proposed system demonstrates a low temperature measurement error (±0.49 °C at the end of 25 km) and acceptable EVM values, which were within the 3GPP requirements. The proposed integrated system can be effectively applied for practical applications, which significantly reduces the fiber infrastructure cost by effective usage of a single optical fiber link.

V2XConnect: Harmonizing the Landscape of Bidirectional Charging Codes, Standards, and Communication Protocols

The utility grid is constantly evolving with new generation sources and diverse loads from backup generators, backup batteries, rooftop photovoltaics (PV), and flexible charging loads. Each of these technologies presents consumers with an opportunity to work with their local utility to promote grid stability, reliability, and affordability. Through a wide range of programs, utilities are incentivizing the use of these resources to benefit the grid. However, especially for devices with inverters that supply power back to the grid, it is important that these assets comply with local grid codes to ensure human safety, power quality, and grid reliability. One of the most promising of these new technologies is the bidirectional electric vehicle (EV) coupled with bidirectional electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE). This report introduces the technologies that enable bidirectional charging and how these systems operate. It then outlines the necessary interconnection codes and industry standards that govern the operations of grid-tied inverters, including those in bidirectional charging. A key challenge is then outlined from the complex landscape of communication protocols and proprietary systems designed to coordinate these grid assets. Finally, a single gateway solution is proposed to harmonize communications between all assets across an entire site for a cohesive response to grid codes and utility programs that is flexible enough to support a range of market options.

Partial connectomes of labeled dopaminergic circuits reveal non-synaptic communication and axonal remodeling after exposure to cocaine

Dopaminergic (DA) neurons exert profound influences on behavior including addiction. However, how DA axons communicate with target neurons and how those communications change with drug exposure remains poorly understood. We leverage cell type-specific labeling with large volume serial electron microscopy to detail DA connections in the nucleus accumbens (NAc) of the mouse (Mus musculus) before and after exposure to cocaine. We find that individual DA axons contain different varicosity types based on their vesicle contents. Spatially ordering along individual axons further suggests that varicosity types are non-randomly organized. DA axon varicosities rarely make specific synapses (<2%, 6/410), but instead are more likely to form spinule-like structures (15%, 61/410) with neighboring neurons. Days after a brief exposure to cocaine, DA axons were extensively branched relative to controls, formed blind-ended ‘bulbs’ filled with mitochondria, and were surrounded by elaborated glia. Finally, mitochondrial lengths increased by ~2.2 times relative to control only in DA axons and NAc spiny dendrites after cocaine exposure. We conclude that DA axonal transmission is unlikely to be mediated via classical synapses in the NAc and that the major locus of anatomical plasticity of DA circuits after exposure to cocaine are large-scale axonal re-arrangements with correlated changes in mitochondria.

Communication device, spread-spectrum receiver, and related method using normalized matched filter for improving signal-to-noise ratio in harsh environments

A communication device, a method of operating a communication device, and a spread-spectrum receiver are disclosed. The method includes receiving an incoming RF signal, demodulating the incoming RF signal to generate a baseband signal, filtering the baseband signal with a normalized matched filter having filter characteristics matched to a pulse-shaping filter of the transmitter that generated the incoming RF signal, and extracting a received signal from a normalized output generated by the normalized matched filter. As a result, interferences and noise from harsh environments may be suppressed.
