A taxonomy of constraints in black-box simulation-based optimization

The types of constraints encountered in black-box simulation-based optimization problems differ significantly from those addressed in nonlinear programming. Here, we introduce a characterization of constraints to address this situation. We provide formal definitions for several constraint classes and present illustrative examples in the context of the resulting taxonomy. This taxonomy, denoted KARQ, is useful for modeling and problem formulation, as well as optimization software development and deployment. It can also be used as the basis for a dialog with practitioners in moving problems to increasingly solvable branches of optimization.

Guaranteeing a Physically Realizable Battery Dispatch Without Charge-Discharge Complementarity Constraints

The non-convex complementarity constraints present a fundamental computational challenge in energy constrained optimization problems. In this work, we present a new, linear, and robust battery optimization formulation that sidesteps the need for battery complementarity constraints and integers and prove analytically that the formulation guarantees that all energy constraints are satisfied which ensures that the optimized battery dispatch is physically realizable. In addition, we bound the worst-case model mismatch and discuss conservativeness. In conclusion, simulation results further illustrate the effectiveness of this approach.

Sequential Linearization Method for Bound-Constrained Mathematical Programs with Complementarity Constraints

Here, we propose an algorithm for solving bound-constrained mathematical programs with complementarity constraints on the variables. Each iteration of the algorithm involves solving a linear program with complementarity constraints in order to obtain an estimate of the active set. The algorithm enforces descent on the objective function to promote global convergence to B-stationary points. We provide a convergence analysis and preliminary numerical results on a range of test problems. We also study the effect of fixing the active constraints in a bound-constrained quadratic program that can be solved on each iteration in order to obtain fast convergence.

The Predictive Power of Exact Constraints and Appropriate Norms in Density Functional Theory

Ground-state Kohn-Sham density functional theory provides, in principle, the exact ground-state energy and electronic spin densities of real interacting electrons in a static external potential. In practice, the exact density functional for the exchange-correlation (xc) energy must be approximated in a computationally efficient way. About 20 mathematical properties of the exact xc functional are known. In this work, we review and discuss these known constraints on the xc energy and hole. By analyzing a sequence of increasingly sophisticated density functional approximations (DFAs), we argue that (a) the satisfaction of more exact constraints and appropriate norms makes a functional more predictive over the immense space of many-electron systems and (b) fitting to bonded systems yields an interpolative DFA that may not extrapolate well to systems unlike those in the fitting set. We discuss both how the class of well-described systems has grown along with constraint satisfaction and the possibilities for future functional development.

(abstract) Automated Constraint Checking of Spacecraft Command Sequences

Making certain that spacecraft command sequences do not violate any constraints is often tedious and expensive in terms of both personnel and software development. To reduce this cost, we have pursued the development of a flexible system for specifying models of spacecraft behavior in response to commands as well as constraints on that behavior. The potential need for modeling complex spacecraft behavior required that the system be designed to be usable both on a conventional workstation and a parallel supercomputer. Finally, it needed to be intuitive enough for the the intended mission operations users to easily design sets of rules and models to automate tedious, resource-consuming constraint checking of commands. We have defined a Specification And Verification Environment (SAVE) for spacecraft flight rules.

Lossless Convexification of Control Constraints for a Class of Nonlinear Optimal Control Problems

In this paper we consider a class of optimal control problems that have continuous-time nonlinear dynamics and nonconvex control constraints. We propose a convex relaxation of the nonconvex control constraints, and prove that the optimal solution to the relaxed problem is the globally optimal solution to the original problem with nonconvex control constraints. This lossless convexification enables a computationally simpler problem to be solved instead of the original problem. We demonstrate the approach in simulation with a planetary soft landing problem involving a nonlinear gravity field.

Traverse Planning with Temporal-Spatial Constraints

We present an approach to planning rover traverses in a domain that includes temporal-spatial constraints. We are using the NASA Resource Prospector mission as a reference mission in our research. The objective of this mission is to explore permanently shadowed regions at a Lunar pole. Most of the time the rover is required to avoid being in shadow. This requirement depends on where the rover is located and when it is at that location. Such a temporal-spatial constraint makes traverse planning more challenging for both humans and machines. We present a mixed-initiative traverse planner which addresses this challenge. This traverse planner is part of the Exploration Ground Data Systems (xGDS), which we have enhanced with new visualization features, new analysis tools, and new automation for path planning, in order to be applicable to the Re-source Prospector mission. The key concept that is the basis of the analysis tools and that supports the automated path planning is reachability in this dynamic environment due to the temporal-spatial constraints.

Trajectory Generation with Load Constraints for Robotic Manipulators

Future large spacecraft will utilize robotic manipulators for in-space servicing, assembly, and manufacturing. Due to launch mass constraints, such manipulators will be designed to be as lightweight as possible. Trajectory generation algorithms will need to factor in load constraints to avoid overexerting and damaging manipulators. This paper investigates an approach that combines optimal Rapidly-exploring Random Trees, spline interpolation, and Model Predictive Control to generate a manipulator trajectory which respects load constraints.

Transmission Constraint Screening for Production Cost Modeling at Scale

Transmission constraint calculation and screening, for both unit commitment and economic dispatch, is a critical feature of a performant solution method, but one that is often overlooked in the literature. In this talk, we will discuss the transmission constraint calculation and screening algorithm implemented in the open-source Egret package for electrical grid optimization and compare it against the more straightforward approach Egret originally implemented. Finally, we discuss the implications for transmission constraint sharing within a production cost modeling simulation.

Developing Frequency Stability Constraint for Unit Commitment Problem Considering High Penetration of Renewables: Preprint

As zero-carbon electricity systems become the trend of future grid, the system inertia provided by conventional synchronous generators (SGs) keeps decreasing. The resultant lower system inertia will inevitably cause frequency stability problem, especially in the first few seconds after disturbance. To address this challenge, this paper proposes a frequency stability unit commitment constraint considering the fast frequency responses (FFRs) from inverter-based resources (IBRs). Thus, this paper first analyzes a frequency nadir differential equation that considers SG governor model and three kinds of FFR provided by IBRs. A system frequency nadir estimation framework is developed with consideration of various conventional SG and IBR models. The accuracy of this frequency estimation framework is validated by largest N-1 contingency simulation result of a real island system. Then, the adaptive inertia frequency stability unit commitment constraint is derived from sensitivity analysis method. Finally, we demonstrate the effectiveness of our developed constraints with one year day-ahead unit commitment results of the real island system.

Improved cosmological constraints on the neutrino mass and lifetime

We present cosmological constraints on the sum of neutrino masses as a function of the neutrino lifetime, in a framework in which neutrinos decay into dark radiation after becoming non-relativistic. We find that in this regime the cosmic microwave background (CMB), baryonic acoustic oscillations (BAO) and (uncalibrated) luminosity distance to supernovae from the Pantheon catalog constrain the sum of neutrino masses Σm$_{ν}$ to obey Σm$_{ν}$< 0.42 eV at (95% C.L.). While the bound has improved significantly as compared to the limits on the same scenario from Planck 2015, it still represents a significant relaxation of the constraints as compared to the stable neutrino case. We show that most of the improvement can be traced to the more precise measurements of low-ℓ polarization data in Planck 2018, which leads to tighter constraints on τ$_{reio}$ (and thereby on A$_{s}$), breaking the degeneracy arising from the effect of (large) neutrino masses on the amplitude of the CMB power spectrum.

Supersymmetric charge constraints on AdS black holes from free fields

Supersymmetric AdS black hole solutions exist only when their angular momenta and charges satisfy a certain constraint that depends on the dimension. We show that these nonlinear relations on the conserved charges agree with a computation in the dual supersymmetric CFT in its free limit, with interactions entering only through a uniform rescaling of all charges. Our computations apply to the highly non-trivial charge constraints for AdS 4 , AdS 5 and AdS 7 black holes, and generalize an earlier one for the analogous constraint in AdS 3 . Our results suggest a microscopic understanding of AdS black holes beyond the scope of supersymmetric indices.

Constraints on Quantum Gravity

Recently, it has become increasingly clear that there are constraints on the low-energy effective theories of quantum gravity that cannot be captured by the standard Wilsonian paradigm. For gravitational theories in asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetimes, we can formulate such constraints and aim to prove or falsify them using the AdS/CFT correspondence. I will review the work I did with Daniel Harlow on constraints on symmetries of quantum gravity. I will also discuss more recent progress in this holographic approach, and present the proof that Yifan Wang and I completed this year, which proves and strengthens a part of the Distance Conjecture that I proposed with Cumrun Vafa in 2006.

A Smoothed Augmented Lagrangian Framework for Convex Optimization with Nonsmooth Constraints

Augmented Lagrangian (AL) methods have proven remarkably useful in solving optimization problems with complicated constraints. The last decade has seen the development of overall complexity guarantees for inexact AL variants. Yet, a crucial gap persists in addressing nonsmooth convex constraints. To this end, we present a smoothed augmented Lagrangian (AL) framework where nonsmooth terms are progressively smoothed with a smoothing parameter $\eta _k$ . The resulting AL subproblems are $\eta _k$ -smooth, allowing for leveraging accelerated schemes. By a careful selection of the inexactness level $\epsilon _k$ (for inexact subproblem resolution), the penalty parameter $\rho _k$ , and smoothing parameter $\eta _k$ at epoch k, we derive rate and complexity guarantees of $\tilde{\mathcal {O}}(1/{\varepsilon }^{3/2})$ and $\tilde{\mathcal {O}}(1/{\varepsilon })$ in convex and strongly convex regimes for computing an ${\varepsilon }$ -optimal solution, when $\rho _k$ increases at a geometric rate, a significant improvement over the best available guarantees for AL schemes for convex programs with nonsmooth constraints. Analogous guarantees are developed for settings with $\rho _k = \rho$ as well as $\eta _k = \eta$ . Preliminary numerics on a fused Lasso problem display promise.

Multi-objective materials bayesian optimization with active learning of design constraints: Design of ductile refractory multi-principal-element alloys

We report Bayesian Optimization (BO) has emerged as a powerful framework to efficiently explore and exploit materials design spaces. To date, most BO approaches to materials design have focused on the materials discovery problem as if it were a single expensive-to-query ‘black box’ in which the target is to optimize a single objective (i.e., material property or performance metric). Also, such approaches tend to be constraint agnostic. Here, we present a novel multi-information BO framework capable of actively learning materials design as a multiple objectives and constraints problem. We demonstrate this framework by optimally exploring a Refractory Multi-Principal-Element Alloy (MPEA) space, here specifically, the system Mo-Nb-Ti-V-W. The MPEAs are explored to optimize two density-functional theory (DFT) derived ductility indicators (Pugh’s Ratio and Cauchy pressure) while learning design constraints relevant to the manufacturing of high-temperature gas-turbine components. Alloys in the BO Pareto-front are analyzed using DFT to gain an insight into fundamental atomic and electronic underpinning for their superior performance, as evaluated within this framework.

Enforcing global constraints for the dispersion closure problem: τ 2 -SIMPLE algorithm

Permeability and effective dispersion tensors are critical parameters to characterize flow and transport in porous media at the continuum scale. Homogenization theory defines a framework in which such effective properties are first computed from solving a closure problem in a repeating unit cell of the periodic microstructure and then used in a macroscopic formulation for efficient computation. The closure problem is formulated as a local boundary value problem subjected to global constraints, which guarantee the uniqueness of the solution and can be difficult to satisfy for complex geometries and at high flow conditions. These constraints also ensure that pore-scale pressure, velocity, and concentration fields can be accurately reconstructed from the closure variable. Building on a previous work, here we present a framework that allows to satisfy global constraints associated to both the permeability and the dispersion closure problems by introducing two artificial time scales. The algorithm, called τ 2 -SIMPLE, computes both permeability and effective dispersion given an arbitrarily complex geometry and flow condition. Furthermore, this algorithm is demonstrated to be accurate for both 2D and 3D geometries across varying flow conditions, and thus it can be used to quickly characterize effective properties from porous media images in many applications.

An adaptive sampling augmented Lagrangian method for stochastic optimization with deterministic constraints

The primary goal of this paper is to provide an efficient solution algorithm based on the augmented Lagrangian framework for optimization problems with a stochastic objective function and deterministic constraints. Our main contribution is combining the augmented Lagrangian framework with adaptive sampling, resulting in an efficient optimization methodology validated with practical examples. To achieve the presented efficiency, here we consider inexact solutions for the augmented Lagrangian subproblems, and through an adaptive sampling mechanism, we control the variance in the gradient estimates. Furthermore, we analyze the theoretical performance of the proposed scheme by showing equivalence to a gradient descent algorithm on a Moreau envelope function, and we prove sublinear convergence for convex objectives and linear convergence for strongly convex objectives with affine equality constraints. The worst-case sample complexity of the resulting algorithm, for an arbitrary choice of penalty parameter in the augmented Lagrangian function, is $\mathscr{O}$(ϵ -3-δ ) , where ϵ > 0 is the expected error of the solution and δ > 0 is a user-defined parameter. If the penalty parameter is chosen to be $\mathscr{O}$(ϵ -1 ), we demonstrate that the result can be improved to $\mathscr{O}$(ϵ -2 ) , which is competitive with the other methods employed in the literature. Moreover, if the objective function is strongly convex with affine equality constraints, we obtain $\mathscr{O}$(ϵ -1 log(1/ϵ)) complexity. Finally, we empirically verify the performance of our adaptive sampling augmented Lagrangian framework in machine learning optimization and engineering design problems, including topology optimization of a heat sink with environmental uncertainty.

Constraint-dependent CTOA determination for stable ductile crack growth

The crack tip opening angle (CTOA) has been used as a reliable fracture toughness to characterize stable crack growth for thin-wall structures in low-constraint conditions. Recently, it is found that CTOA can also be utilized as a robust fracture parameter to describe the arrest fracture toughness for gas transmission pipelines in ductile steels. For better understanding the concept of CTOA, this paper presents a brief review on the CTOA definitions and its test methods. And then, four CTOA models are developed for determining the CTOA toughness using conventional single edge notched bend (SENB) specimens, including the load–displacement linear fit model, the logarithmic load–displacement linear fit model, the stable tearing energy model, and the J-differentiation model. Here fracture test data from SENB specimens in A285 carbon steel are employed to evaluate the proposed CTOA models. The results show that these CTOA models can determine either identical or comparable critical CTOA values for stable ductile crack growth using the SENB specimens. A constraint-corrected CTOA resistance curve and a constraint-corrected critical CTOA equation are also obtained for A285 carbon steel.
