Generative Thermodynamic Computing

Here, we introduce a generative modeling framework for thermodynamic computing, in which structured data are synthesized from noise by the natural time evolution of a physical system governed by Langevin dynamics. While conventional diffusion models use neural networks to perform denoising, here the information needed to generate structure from noise is encoded by the dynamics of a thermodynamic system. Training proceeds by maximizing the probability with which the computer generates the reverse of a noising trajectory, which ensures that the computer generates data with minimal heat emission. We demonstrate this framework within a digital simulation of a thermodynamic computer. If realized in analog hardware, such a system would function as a generative model that produces structured samples without the need for artificially injected noise or active control of denoising.

A general Bayesian algorithm for the autonomous alignment of beamlines

Autonomous methods to align beamlines can decrease the amount of time spent on diagnostics, and also uncover better global optima leading to better beam quality. The alignment of these beamlines is a high-dimensional expensive-to-sample optimization problem involving the simultaneous treatment of many optical elements with correlated and nonlinear dynamics. Bayesian optimization is a strategy of efficient global optimization that has proved successful in similar regimes in a wide variety of beamline alignment applications, though it has typically been implemented for particular beamlines and optimization tasks. In this paper, we present a basic formulation of Bayesian inference and Gaussian process models as they relate to multi-objective Bayesian optimization, as well as the practical challenges presented by beamline alignment. We show that the same general implementation of Bayesian optimization with special consideration for beamline alignment can quickly learn the dynamics of particular beamlines in an online fashion through hyperparameter fitting with no prior information. We present the implementation of a concise software framework for beamline alignment and test it on four different optimization problems for experiments on X-ray beamlines at the National Synchrotron Light Source II and the Advanced Light Source, and an electron beam at the Accelerator Test Facility, along with benchmarking on a simulated digital twin. We discuss new applications of the framework, and the potential for a unified approach to beamline alignment at synchrotron facilities.

Testing and Analysis of Grid Forming Inverter Control for Achieving Resilient and Economic Operation of an Islanded Microgrid

This investigation examines the feasibility of operating a battery energy storage system (BESS) in parallel with synchronous generation by using grid forming (GFM) control in order to achieve frequency control objectives while mitigating increases to operating costs in the context of an islanded microgrid. The BESS GFM control system, which is based on conventional droop techniques, is modeled along with the overall microgrid using the Real Time Digital Simulator (RTDS) to allow for integration of genset controller hardware. A series of simulations are performed to test the voltage and frequency regulation capability of the BESS control system when the primary frequency regulating genset is tripped offline. The results of the simulations suggest that the GFM control scheme will successfully maintain frequency and voltage stability, which will enable operation without a back-up genset while not compromising the microgrid resiliency to contingencies.

Quantitative Voltammetry Measurements of High-Concentration Actinides in Molten Chloride Fuel Salts

Molten chloride mixtures containing high concentrations of UCl 3 (i.e., >70 wt%) are candidates for next-generation molten salt reactor (MSR) fuel salts that enable new plant optimization and fuel cycle strategies. MSR licensing, however, is contingent on the development of effective material control and accounting (MC&A) practices for these salts. To close this gap, we have developed an electroanalytical approach that enables accurate in situ measurements of uranium concentrations in these highly loaded fuel salts. This methodology uses a multielectrode array voltammetry sensor combined with digital simulations that account for non-idealities such as uncompensated resistance effects. The theory-based numerical simulations of voltammetry responses yielded correction factors that are agnostic of electrochemical cell geometry and produced consistent voltammetry peak current results when correcting for varying amounts of ohmic resistance. In doing so, we have demonstrated accurate concentration measurements for UCl 3 in LiCl-KCl-UCl 3 across a range of mass fractions between 55 and 72.3 wt% at 550 °C.

High-Fidelity Modeling of a Type-5 Wind Turbine Gearbox (Intern Technical Presentation) (Poster)

Type-5 wind turbines are unique in their use of a permanent magnet synchronous generator, as well as their use of a hydraulic torque converter. This architecture presents an opportunity to provide steady and grid-ready energy without the need for a power converter. With infrastructure continuity and reliability being an important topic amongst renewable energies, researchers have been prompted to further investigate the benefits of type-5 turbines’ unique electromechanical configuration on stable electricity generation. Researchers involved in the WindSG project, SG standing for synchronous generator, are aiming to model a type-5 turbine using Real Time Digital Simulation (RTDS) to evaluate its efficacy in the grid. RSCAD, the software run on the RTDS, comes pre-loaded with electrical and electromechanical components to help simulate electrical generation and grid conditions. However, within this repertoire there is a lack of a component to represent a gearbox with high-fidelity. Within RSCAD’s case studies, the gearbox is often represented simply by a gear ratio value. This presented the task of developing a high-fidelity gearbox model in RSCAD for use in the larger RTDS type-5 wind turbine model. This presentation describes a method of developing a lumped parameter mathematical model to represent a planetary-parallel-parallel gearbox in RSCAD for use in RTDS.

Real-Time Testbed for Smart Grid Recloser Controller

The growing need for a low voltage recloser has become apparent due to the rise in requirements for a smart grid. This includes more detailed management of power flow forward (towards load) and backward (towards generation), source synchronization in real time, more indepth fault responses, and the use of green energy. The SEL-651R-2 relay is a device that can manage these needs, especially in fault response and synchronization, and is commonly used in systems called microgrids. Microgrids are distribution level systems that are able to operate separated from the main grid, are typically installed much closer to the load(s), and are fed by distributed energy resources (DERs), such as wind, solar or diesel generators. The SEL-651R-2 is normally used in the field with presets operative settings, but the Western Michigan University (WMU) Center for Interdisciplinary Research on Secure, Efficient and Sustainable Energy Technology (WMU InterEnergy Center) wished to test this device in its range of capabilities for microgrid application. A Hardware-In-the-Loop (HIL) testbed was implemented and used through the Real Time Digital Simulator (RTDS) using the RSCAD software to test the SEL-651R-2's use cases and functions. The testbed includes a microgrid with interconnection to a larger main grid, and the relay is meant to control the recloser at the point of common coupling (PCC) between the main grid and microgrid. The testbed shows how basic protections, reclosing, and synchronization checks function when handling faults that affect both the microgrid and the main grid.
