Modeled Results of Four Residential Energy Efficiency Measure Packages for Deriving Advanced Building Construction Research Targets

The Advanced Building Construction (ABC) Initiative from the U.S. Department of Energy Building Technologies Office is working to accelerate industrialized construction innovations for decarbonizing buildings. To inform performance and cost targets for research under the ABC Initiative, this analysis used the ResStock™ tool to evaluate the energy savings, utility bill impacts, and carbon emissions impacts of four simulated upgrade packages with specific target performance levels on a large sample of residential dwelling units (approximately 550,000) representative of the U.S. housing stock.

Clean Hydrogen: Energy Carrier, Renewables Enabler, and Sector Coupler to Accelerate the Energy Transition and Meet Climate Goals

Comprehensive, concerted efforts supported by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE), Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies Office (HFTO) are advancing research and development to demonstrate clean hydrogen production and industrial decarbonization pathways. These pathways enable an economically competitive and environmentally beneficial future energy system across sectors and can address specific applications that are difficult to decarbonize. Initiatives include the Hydrogen Energy Earthshot, H2@Scale, National Clean Hydrogen Strategy and Roadmap, H2NEW: Hydrogen from Next-generation Electrolyzers of Water Consortium, HydroGEN: Advanced Water Splitting Materials Consortium, BioH2 Consortium, HyMARC Hydrogen Materials Advanced Research Consortium, and M2FCT: Million Mile Fuel Cell Truck Consortium.

Ce cours a rythme libre est offert en anglais et en francais et couvre une variete de sujets lies a l'acces a l'energie en Haiti, notamment les produits solaires hors reseau, le potentiel du marche en Haiti, les considerations liees a l'offre et a la demande, la conception, l'installation et la maintenance du systeme, -modeles commerciaux solaires en reseau, modelisation financiere, genre et acces a l'energie, utilisation productive de l'energie et adaptation au climat. La formation est destinee aux etudiants universitaires, aux partenaires gouvernementaux, aux ONG, aux bailleurs de fonds, aux partenaires de developpement, aux professionnels, etc. Aucune connaissance prealable du solaire hors reseau ou d'Haiti n'est requise pour beneficier de cette formation. Beyond Price Taker: Conceptual Design and Optimization of Integrated Energy Systems Using Machine Learning Market Surrogates

Future electricity generation systems must be optimized to provide flexibility that counteracts the variability of non-dispatchable renewable energy sources and ensures the reliability and safety of critical infrastructure, including the electric grid. The current state-of-the-art is to co-optimize the design and operation of integrated energy systems (IES) treating historical or predicted time-series electricity prices as fixed parameters. Recent literature has shown the limitations of this price taker assumption, which neglects how IES optimization decisions influence market outcomes. As such, this paper proposes a new optimization formulation that uses machine learning surrogate models, trained from a library of annual market operation simulations, to embed IES market interactions into the co-optimization problem directly. Using a thermal generator example built in the open-source IDAES computational environment, we show that the price taker approach routinely over-predicts annual revenues by 8% or more compared to a validation simulation, where the proposed approach has a typical relative error of 1% or less.

MassIVE MSV000085948 - Utilization of syringyl lignin-derived compounds and production of 2-pyrone-4,6-dicarboxylic acid by Pseudomonas putida KT2440: Lignin is an abundant aromatic polymer formed in plants by coupling reactions of p-coumaryl, coniferyl, and sinapyl alcohols. Pseudomonas putida KT2440 (P. putida KT2440), a robust soil bacterium, naturally catabolizes many aromatic compounds derived from lignin as carbon and energy sources and has been extensively engineered to valorize guaiacyl (G) and p-hydroxyphenyl (H) lignin-derived aromatic species to valuable chemicals. However, only a few studies report the capacity of Pseudomonads to grow on syringyl (S) lignin-derived compounds. In this work, we demonstrate that P. putida KT2440 catabolizes syringate in the presence of an auxiliary energy source. Overexpression of vanAB, encoding a native Rieske non-heme iron monooxygenase, enabled catabolism of syringate and syringaldehyde without an additional carbon and energy source. In vitro biochemical characterization of VanAB confirmed that this enzyme O-demethylates syringate to 3-O-methylgallate and, subsequently, 3-O-methylgallate to gallate, albeit 4- and 55-fold less efficiently than vanillate, respectively. Transcriptomics and proteomics experiments demonstrate that the galADBC transcripts and enzymes required for gallate catabolism are induced when vanAB is overexpressed during cultivation in syringate. Further, we show that that the endogenous protocatechuate-3,4-dioxygenase PcaHG ring-opens gallate to produce 2-pyrone-4,6-dicarboxylic acid (PDC), a promising bio-based chemical. Constitutive overexpression of vanAB and pcaHG along with galA deletion enabled PDC production from SA at a 70% (mol/mol) yield. Furthermore, leveraging the LigAB dioxygenase from Sphingobium sp. SYK-6 and VanAB O-demethylase from Pseudomonas sp. HR199 enabled simultaneous conversion of monomers with S-, G-, and H-type functionality to PDC at 82% (mol/mol) yield. Overall, this study elucidates a native pathway for catabolism of syringyl lignin-derived compounds in P. putida KT2440 and demonstrates the potential of this robust host for biological funneling of substrates derived from all three canonical monolignols.

A normative price for energy from an electricity generation system: An Owner-dependent Methodology for Energy Generation (system) Assessment (OMEGA). Volume 2: Derivation of system energy price equations

The methodology presented is a derivation of the utility owned solar electric systems model. The net present value of the system is determined by consideration of all financial benefits and costs including a specified return on investment. Life cycle costs, life cycle revenues, and residual system values are obtained. Break-even values of system parameters are estimated by setting the net present value to zero.

Search for low-energy neutrinos from astrophysical sources with Borexino

We report on searches for neutrinos and antineutrinos from astrophysical sources performed with the Borexino detector at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso in Italy. Electron antineutrinos ( $\bar{ν}_e$ ) are detected in an organic liquid scintillator through the inverse β -decay reaction. In the present work we set model-independent upper limits in the energy range 1.8-16.8 MeV on neutrino fluxes from unknown sources that improve our previous results, on average, by a factor 2.5. Using the same data set, we first obtain experimental constraints on the diffuse supernova $\bar{ν}_e$ fluxes in the previously unexplored region below 8 MeV. A search for $\bar{ν}_e$ in the solar neutrino flux is also presented: the presence of $\bar{ν}_e$ would be a manifestation of a non-zero anomalous magnetic moment of the neutrino, making possible its conversion to antineutrinos in the strong magnetic field of the Sun. We obtain a limit for a solar $\bar{ν}_e$ flux of 384 cm -2 s -1 (90% C.L.), assuming an undistorted solar 8 B neutrinos energy spectrum, that corresponds to a transition probability pνe→$\bar{ν}_e$< 7.2 ×10-5 (90% C.L.) for E $\bar{ν}_e$ > 1.8 MeV.At lower energies, by investigating the spectral shape of elastic scattering events, we obtain a new limit on solar 7 Be- ν e conversion into $\bar{ν}_e$ of pνe→$\bar{ν}_e$< 0.14 (90% C.L.) at 0.862 MeV. Last, we investigate solar flares as possible neutrino sources and obtain the strongest up-to-date limits on the fluence of neutrinos of all flavor neutrino below 3–7 MeV. Assuming the neutrino flux to be proportional to the flare’s intensity, we exclude an intense solar flare as the cause of the observed excess of events in run 117 of the Cl-Ar Homestake experiment.

Reorganization Energies for Interfacial Proton-Coupled Electron Transfer to a Water Oxidation Catalyst

The reorganization energy (λ) for interfacial electron transfer (ET) and proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) from a conductive metal oxide (In 2 O 3 :Sn, ITO) to a surface-bound water oxidation catalyst were extracted from kinetic data measured as a function of the thermodynamic driving force. Visible light excitation resulted in rapid excited-state injection (k inj > 10 8 s -1 ) to the ITO, which photo-initiated the two interfacial reactions of interest. The rate constants for both reactions increased with the driving force, −ΔG°, to a saturating limit, k max , with rate constants consistently larger for ET than for PCET. Marcus-Gerischer analysis of the kinetic data provided the reorganization energy for interfacial PCET (0.90 ± 0.02 eV) and ET (0.40 ± 0.02 eV), respectively. The magnitude of k max for PCET was found to decrease with pH, behavior that was absent for ET. Both the decrease in k max and the larger reorganization energy for an unwanted competing PCET reaction from the ITO to the oxidized catalyst showcases a significant kinetic advantage for driving solar water oxidation at high pH. Computational analysis revealed a larger inner-sphere reorganization energy contribution for PCET than for ET arising from a more significant change in the Ru–O bond length for PCET. Extending Marcus-Gerischer theory to PCET by including the excited electron-proton vibronic states and the proton donor-acceptor motion provided an apparent reorganization energy of 1.01 eV. Furthermore, this study demonstrates that the Marcus-Gerischer theory initially developed for ET can be reliably extended to PCET for quantifying and interpreting reorganization energies observed experimentally.

Quantum efficiency, photoemission energy spectra, and mean transverse energy of ultrananocrystalline diamond photocathode

The quantum efficiency and mean transverse energy of electrons emitted from a cathode determine the quality of beams generated from photoinjectors. The nitrogen-incorporated ultrananocrystalline diamond, (N)UNCD, is a new class of robust semiconductor photocathodes, which has been considered in photoinjectors for high peak current extraction. In this work, we measure the spectral response in quantum efficiency, photoemission energy spectra, and mean transverse energy of the (N)UNCD photocathode using a photoemission electron microscope. The observed quantum efficiency was comparable to that of copper photocathodes. Photoemission spectra showed the evidence of scattering of electrons before emission. This relaxation of electrons due to scattering is also observed in the spectral response of the mean transverse energy. The mean transverse energy is limited to ∼70 meV at the threshold. We attribute this to the physical and chemical roughness of the (N)UNCD photocathode and, hence, smoother films will be required to further reduce the mean transverse energy obtained from the (N)UNCD photocathode.

Band Energy Dependence of Defect Formation in the Topological Semimetal Cd3As2

Cadmium Arsenide (Cd3As2) is a prototypical Dirac semimetal that manifests topological properties in a 3D bulk material. In defect-free Cd3As2, the Fermi level lies at a minimum in the density of states at the Dirac point, but experimentally it forms with excess electron carriers and an elevated EF, thereby masking the topological features. To computationally study the self-doping of Cd3As2, we combine density functional theory (DFT) calculations for defect formation energies with quasi-particle self-consistent GW (QSGW) electronic structure calculations. We demonstrate an innate dependence of the point defect formation energies on carrier concentrations and use the QSGW calculated density of states to extrapolate formation energies to arbitrary electron concentrations. This approach allows the quantitative modeling of thermodynamic defect equilibria in topological semimetals and is used to predict how Cd3As2 growth conditions affect the position of EF relative to the Dirac point.

Differential Measurements of Jet Substructure and Partonic Energy Loss in Au+Au Collisions at √ sNN = 200 GeV

The STAR collaboration presents jet substructure measurements related to both the momentum fraction and the opening angle within jets in p+p and Au+Au collisions at √sNN =200GeV. The substructure observables include SoftDrop groomed momentum fraction (zg), groomed jet radius (Rg), and subjet momentum fraction (zSJ) and opening angle (θSJ). The latter observable is introduced for the first time. Fully corrected subjet measurements are presented for p+p collisions and are compared to leading-order Monte Carlo models. The subjet θSJ distributions reflect the jets leading opening angle and are utilized as a proxy for the resolution scale of the medium in Au+Au collisions. We compare data from Au+Au collisions to those from p+p which are embedded in minimum-bias Au+Au events in order to include the effects of detector smearing and the heavy-ion collision underlying event. The subjet observables are shown to be more robust to the background than zg and Rg. We observe no significant modifications of the subjet observables within the two highest-energy, back-to-back jets, resulting in a distribution of opening angles and the splittings that are vacuumlike. We also report measurements of the differential dijet momentum imbalance (AJ) for jets of varying θSJ. We find no qualitative differences in energy loss signatures for varying angular scales in the range 0.1< θSJ<0.3, leading to the possible interpretation that energy loss in this population of high-momentum dijet pairs, is due to soft medium-induced gluon radiation from a single color charge as it traverses the medium.
