The Markov gap for geometric reflected entropy

The reflected entropy S R (A : B) of a density matrix ρ AB is a bipartite correlation measure lower-bounded by the quantum mutual information I(A : B). In holographic states satisfying the quantum extremal surface formula, where the reflected entropy is related to the area of the entanglement wedge cross-section, there is often an order-N 2 gap between S R and I. We provide an information-theoretic interpretation of this gap by observing that S R - I is related to the fidelity of a particular Markov recovery problem that is impossible in any state whose entanglement wedge cross-section has a nonempty boundary; for this reason, we call the quantity S R - I the Markov gap. We then prove that for time-symmetric states in pure AdS 3 gravity, the Markov gap is universally lower bounded by log(2)ℓ AdS /2G N times the number of endpoints of the cross-section. We provide evidence that this lower bound continues to hold in the presence of bulk matter, and comment on how it might generalize above three bulk dimensions. Finally, we explore the Markov recovery problem controlling S R - I using fixed area states. This analysis involves deriving a formula for the quantum fidelity — in fact, for all the sandwiched Rényi relative entropies — between fixed area states with one versus two fixed areas, which may be of independent interest. We discuss, throughout the paper, connections to the general theory of multipartite entanglement in holography.

Lorentzian dynamics and factorization beyond rationality

We investigate the emergence of topological defect lines in the conformal Regge limit of two-dimensional conformal field theory. We explain how a local operator can be factorized into a holomorphic and an anti-holomorphic defect operator connected through a topological defect line, and discuss implications on analyticity and Lorentzian dynamics including aspects of chaos. We derive a formula relating the infinite boost limit, which holographically encodes the “opacity” of bulk scattering, to the action of topological defect lines on local operators. Leveraging the unitary bound on the opacity and the positivity of fusion coefficients, we show that the spectral radii of a large class of topological defect lines are given by their loop expectation values. Factorization also gives a formula relating the local and defect operator algebras and fusion categorical data. We then review factorization in rational conformal field theory from a defect perspective, and examine irrational theories. On the orbifold branch of the c = 1 free boson theory, we find a unified description for the topological defect lines through which the twist fields are factorized; at irrational points, the twist fields factorize through “non-compact” topological defect lines which exhibit continuous defect operator spectra. Along the way, we initiate the development of a formalism to characterize non-compact topological defect lines.

Replica wormholes and capacity of entanglement

We consider the capacity of entanglement as a probe of the Hawking radiation in a two-dimensional dilaton gravity coupled with conformal matter of large degrees of freedom. A formula calculating the capacity is derived using the gravitational path integral, from which we speculate that the capacity has a discontinuity at the Page time in contrast to the continuous behavior of the generalized entropy. We apply the formula to a replica wormhole solution in an eternal AdS black hole coupled to a flat non-gravitating bath and show that the capacity of entanglement is saturated by the thermal capacity of the black hole in the high temperature limit.

Celestial holography meets twisted holography: 4d amplitudes from chiral correlators

We propose a new program for computing a certain integrand of scattering amplitudes of four-dimensional gauge theories which we call the form factor integrand, starting from 6d holomorphic theories on twistor space. We show that the form factor integrands can be expressed as sums of products of 1.) correlators of a 2d chiral algebra, related to the algebra of asymptotic symmetries uncovered recently in the celestial holography program, and 2.) OPE coefficients of a 4d non-unitary CFT. We prove that conformal blocks of the chiral algebras are in one-to-one correspondence with local operators in 4d. We use this bijection to recover the Parke-Taylor formula, the CSW formula, and certain one-loop scattering amplitudes. Along the way, we explain and derive various aspects of celestial holography, incorporating techniques from the twisted holography program such as Koszul duality. This perspective allows us to easily and efficiently recover the infinite-dimensional chiral algebras of asymptotic symmetries recently extracted from scattering amplitudes of massless gluons and gravitons in the celestial basis. We also compute some simple one-loop corrections to the chiral algebras and derive the three-dimensional bulk theories for which these 2d algebras furnish an algebra of boundary local operators.

Effective Field Theory for jet substructure in heavy ion collisions

I develop an Effective Field Theory (EFT) framework to compute jet substructure observables for heavy ion collision experiments. As an example, I consider dijet events that accompany the formation of a weakly coupled long lived Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP) medium in a heavy ion collision and look at an observable insensitive to jet selection bias: the simultaneous measurement of jet mass along with the transverse momentum imbalance between the jets that are groomed to remove soft radiation. Treating the jet as an open quantum system, I write down a factorization formula within the SCET (Soft Collinear Effective Theory) framework in the forward scattering regime. The physics of the medium is encoded in a universal soft field correlator while the jet-medium interaction is captured by a medium induced jet function. The factorization formula leads to a Lindblad type equation for the evolution of the reduced density matrix of the jet in the Markovian approximation. The solution for this equation allows a resummation of large logarithms that arise due to the final state measurements imposed while simultaneously summing over multiple incoherent interactions of the jet with the medium.

Quantum Extremal Surfaces and the Holographic Entropy Cone

Quantum states with geometric duals are known to satisfy a stricter set of entropy inequalities than those obeyed by general quantum systems. The set of allowed entropies derived using the Ryu-Takayanagi (RT) formula defines the Holographic Entropy Cone (HEC). These inequalities are no longer satisfied once general quantum corrections are included by employing the Quantum Extremal Surface (QES) prescription. Nevertheless, the structure of the QES formula allows for a controlled study of how quantum contributions from bulk entropies interplay with HEC inequalities. In this paper, we initiate an exploration of this problem by relating bulk entropy constraints to boundary entropy inequalities. In particular, we show that requiring the bulk entropies to satisfy the HEC implies that the boundary entropies also satisfy the HEC. Further, we also show that requiring the bulk entropies to obey monogamy of mutual information (MMI) implies the boundary entropies also obey MMI.

Soft gravitons in the BFSS matrix model

BFSS proposed that asymptotically flat M-theory is dual to a large N limit of the matrix quantum mechanics describing N nonrelativistic D0-branes. Recent insights on the soft symmetries of any quantum theory of gravity in asymptotically flat space are applied to the BFSS matrix model. It is shown that soft gravitons are realized by submatrices whose rank is held fixed in the large N M-theory limit, rather than the usual linear scaling with N for hard gravitons. The soft expansion is identified with the large N expansion and the soft theorem becomes a universal formula for the quantum mechanical scattering of such submatrix excitations. This formula is shown to be the Ward identity of large type IIA U(1) RR asymptotic gauge symmetry in the matrix model, whose asymptotic boundaries are at future and past timelike infinity.

Riemann-Hilbert correspondence and blown up surface defects

The relationship of two dimensional quantum field theory and isomonodromic deformations of Fuchsian systems has a long history. Recently four-dimensional N = 2 gauge theories joined the party in a multitude of roles. In this paper we study the vacuum expectation values of intersecting half-BPS surface defects in SU(2) theory with N f = 4 fundamental hypermultiplets. We show they form a horizontal section of a Fuchsian system on a sphere with 5 regular singularities, calculate the monodromy, and define the associated isomonodromic tau-function. Using the blowup formula in the presence of half-BPS surface defects, initiated in the companion paper, we obtain the GIL formula, establishing an unexpected relation of the topological string/free fermion regime of supersymmetric gauge theory to classical integrability.

Construction of two-dimensional topological field theories with non-invertible symmetries

We construct the defining data of two-dimensional topological field theories (TFTs) enriched by non-invertible symmetries/topological defect lines. Simple formulae for the three-point functions and the lasso two-point functions are derived, and crossing symmetry is proven. The key ingredients are open-to-closed maps and a boundary crossing relation, by which we show that a diagonal basis exists in the defect Hilbert spaces. We then introduce regular TFTs, provide their explicit constructions for the Fibonacci, Ising and Haagerup $\mathscr{H}$ 3 fusion categories, and match our formulae with previous bootstrap results. We end by explaining how non-regular TFTs are obtained from regular TFTs via generalized gauging.

Renormalizing two-fermion operators in the SMEFT via supergeometry

We extend the geometric framework of field-space covariance for loop computations, thereby unifying the treatment of scalars, fermions, and gauge bosons in effective field theories. This allows us to derive a manifestly covariant formula for one-loop UV divergences that includes contributions from mixed boson-fermion graphs. The result is expressed in terms of geometric invariants of the field-space supermanifold. As a demonstration of this formula, we compute the renormalization group equations for two-fermion operators at the dimension-eight level in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory.

A framework for detection and attribution of regional precipitation change: Application to the United States historical record

Abstract Despite the emerging influence of anthropogenic climate change on the global water cycle, at regional scales the combination of observational uncertainty, large internal variability, and modeling uncertainty undermine robust statements regarding the human influence on precipitation. Here, we use output from global climate models in a perfect-data sense to develop a framework for conducting regional detection and attribution (D&A) for precipitation, starting with the contiguous United States (CONUS) where observational uncertainty is lower than in other regions. Our unified approach can simultaneously detect systematic trends in mean and extreme precipitation, attribute trends to anthropogenic forcings, compute the effects of forcings as a function of time, and map the effects of individual forcings. Model output is used to conduct a set of tests that yield a parsimonious representation for characterizing seasonal precipitation over the CONUS for the historical record (1900 to present day), which ensures our D&A is insensitive to structural uncertainty. Our framework is developed using synthetic data in a Pearl-causal perspective wherein causality can be identified using intervention-based simulations. While the hypothesis-based framework and accompanying generalized D&A formula we develop should be widely applicable, we include a strong caution that the hypothesis-guided simplification of the formula for the historical climatic record of CONUS as described in this paper will likely fail to hold in other geographic regions and under future warming.

Compact representations of structured BFGS matrices

For general large-scale optimization problems compact representations exist in which recursive quasi-Newton update formulas are represented as compact matrix factorizations. For problems in which the objective function contains additional structure, recent structured quasi-Newton methods exploit available second-derivative information and approximate unavailable second derivatives. Here, this article develops the compact representations of two structured Broyden-Fletcher-Goldfarb-Shanno update formulas. The compact representations enable efficient limited memory and initialization strategies. Two limited memory line search algorithms are described for which extensive numerical results demonstrate the efficacy of the algorithms, including comparisons to IPOPT on large machine learning problems, and to L-BFGS on a real world large scale ptychographic imaging application.

Variational approach to relative entropies with an application to QFT

Abstract We define a new divergence of von Neumann algebras using a variational expression similar in nature to Kosaki’s formula for Umegaki’s relative entropy. Our divergence satisfies several of the usual desirable properties, upper bounds the sandwiched Renyi entropy and reduces to the fidelity in a limit. As an illustration, we use the formula in quantum field theory to compute our divergence between the vacuum in a bipartite system and an “orbifolded”—in the sense of a conditional expectation—system in terms of the Jones index. We take the opportunity to point out an entropic certainty relation associated with an inclusion of von Neumann factors related to the relative entropy. This certainty relation has an equivalent formulation in terms of error correcting codes.

Experimental Evaluation of Interfacial Bonding Strength Between 304 Stainless Steel Substrate and Electrodeposited Nickel Coating Using Mesoscale Mechanical Testing Methods

Electrodeposition is a commonly used method for depositing a metal layer on a metallic substrate, to provide a decorative finish or for functional purposes including wear and corrosion resistance. The interfacial bonding strength is a critical factor in determining the quality of electrodeposition, as it ensures the adhesion of the deposited layer to the substrate. Despite its importance, there has not previously been a suitable mechanical testing method to quantitatively characterize the bonding strength between the electrodeposited layers and the substrate, due to the high strength of the materials and to restrictions imposed by the geometry (due to the small thickness of the plating layer) to manufacture tensile bars. In this study, we introduce a novel mesoscale mechanical testing method to overcome these limitations. This technique was applied to assess the bonding strength between a 304 stainless steel (SS) substrate and electrodeposited nickel with three different plating formulae (nickel sulfamate, Watts bath, and hard nickel). The thickness of the pure nickel coatings achieved for each of the three electrolyte solutions was approximately 1 mm on each side of the substrate. Mesoscale tensile bars of 1 mm length were manufactured by a femtosecond laser, with the material interface at the center of the gauge section, and then tensile-tested with digital image correlation. Further, the results proved that the electrodeposition technique is able to produce a very high bonding strength that is close to the yield strength of both the substrate material and the electrodeposited nickel layer. Additionally, in the case of the Watts bath formula, the interfacial bonding strength between the SS 304 and electrodeposited nickel can exceed that of the nickel layer. This method is expected to be useful for quantifying the interfacial bonding strength in numerous applications.

Quantum oscillation studies of the nodal line semimetal Ni 3 In 2 S 2-x Se x

Ternary shandite compounds with the general formula T 3 M 2 X 2 (T = Ni, Co, Rh or Pd; M = Sn, In, or Pb; and X = S or Se) have emerged as a large pool of topological semimetals. This family of compounds hosts different topological phases for various combinations of T, M and X. This paper reports the observation of quantum oscillations under the high magnetic fields in Ni 3 In 2 S 2-x Se x single crystals. Angular dependence of oscillation frequency suggests an evolution of the Fermi surface from three-dimensional to two-dimensional on Se substitution for S in Ni 3 In 2 S 2 . Here, the effective mass obtained for each composition by fitting the oscillation amplitude with the Lifshitz-Kosevich formula, shows no significant change, suggesting that the topological phase might be relatively robust against enhanced spin-orbit coupling upon Se doping in Ni 3 In 2 S 2 .

Entanglement Enabled Intensity Interferometry of different wavelengths of light

Highlights: • We use quantum entanglement to erase the color of photons for a new imaging method. • Can achieve higher resolution imaging by accessing hidden phase information. • We detail practical experimental designs to implement our theoretical protocols. We propose methods to perform intensity interferometry of photons having two different wavelengths. Distinguishable particles typically cannot interfere with each other, but we overcome that obstacle by processing the particles via entanglement and projection so that they lead to the same final state at the detection apparatus. Specifically, we discuss how quasi-phase-matched nonlinear crystals can be used to convert a quantum superposition of light of different wavelengths onto a common wavelength, while preserving the phase information essential for their meaningful interference. We thereby gain access to a host of new observables, which can probe subtle frequency correlations and entanglement. Further, we generalize the van Cittert–Zernike formula for the intensity interferometry of extended sources, demonstrate how our proposal supports enhanced resolution of sources with different spectral character, and suggest potential applications.

Electric and magnetic black holes in a new nonlinear electrodynamics model

Highlights: • We introduce a new NED model which is comparable with the BI model in the weak-field limit. • We find an electric black hole solution in the context of Einstein’s gravity minimally coupled with the new NED model. • We study the thermal stability of the electric black hole solution. • Modified Smarr’s formula consistent with the first law of black hole thermodynamics is obtained. A new nonlinear electrodynamics (NED) model is introduced in the form of a nonpolynomial Lagrangian which admits static spherical and also plane wave solutions in a flat space. Upon coupling with gravity the electric field is finite and comparable with the Born–Infeld counterpart. The electric and magnetic black hole solutions in the Einstein’s gravity coupled with this NED model are presented. The solutions give both asymptotically and in the weak field limit Reissner–Nordström (RN) black hole and unlike the other known models our electric solution is expressed in terms of elementary functions in a closed form. We study the first law and derive the modified Smarr’s formula for the electric type extension of our model. Considerable rich structure, especially thermodynamic ones, ranging from first to the second order phase transitions are added to the RN black hole of linear electrodynamics with this NED model. Having the exact solution for the metric function at our disposal we investigate the stability of the electric black hole from both the thermodynamical and causal points of view.

Isotopic gamma lines for identification of shielding materials

Identifying the constituting materials of concealed objects is crucial in a wide range of sectors, such as medical imaging, geophysics, nonproliferation, national security investigations, and so on. Existing methods face limitations, particularly when multiple materials are involved or when there are challenges posed by scattered radiation and large areal mass. Here we introduce a novel brute-force statistical approach for material identification using high spectral resolution detectors, such as HPGe. The method relies upon updated semianalytic formulae for computing uncollided flux from source of gamma radiation, shielded by a sequence of nested spherical or cylindrical materials. These semianalytical formulae make possible rapid flux estimation for material characterization via combinatorial search through all possible combinations of materials, using a high-resolution HPGe counting detector. An important prerequisite for the method is that the geometry of the objects is known (for example, from X-ray radiography). We demonstrate the viability of this material characterization technique in several use cases with both simulated and experimental data in spherical geometry.
