Short-range order and longer-range disorder revealed in germanium–tin alloy thin films by extended x-ray absorption fine structure analysis

Short-range order (SRO) in semiconductor alloys, a relatively under-studied structural phenomenon in which local atomic arrangements differ from those of a random solid solution, is investigated in molecular beam epitaxy (MBE)-grown GeSn thin films. A novel preparation technique is used to pattern these films into microscale ribbons that are released from the substrate for extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) analysis. The results indicate a strong SRO in which the first shell around Sn atoms is greatly denuded of Sn atoms relative to the nominal atomic composition of the alloy. This effect is more pronounced than that observed recently in GeSn nanowires grown by chemical vapor deposition. Additionally, the presence of a longer-range disorder detected by EXAFS analysis in the shells of atoms more distant from the absorbers is indicative of the defects and inhomogeneous strain present in the MBE-grown films. The evident existence of the SRO in GeSn alloys deposited by different growth methods and in different strain states suggests that SRO is a general phenomenon in the thin films of this metastable solid solution.

Exploring charge transport dynamics in a cryogenic P-type germanium detector

Abstract This study explores the dynamics of charge transport within a cryogenic P-type Ge particle detector, fabricated from a crystal cultivated at the University of South Dakota. By subjecting the detector to cryogenic temperatures and an Am-241 source, we observe evolving charge dynamics and the emergence of cluster dipole states, leading to the impact ionization process at 40 mK. Our analysis focuses on crucial parameters: the zero-field cross-section of cluster dipole states and the binding energy of these states. For the Ge detector in our investigation, the zero-field cross-section of cluster dipole states is determined to be 8.45 × 10 −11 ± 4.22 × 10 −12 cm 2 . Examination of the binding energy associated with cluster dipole states, formed by charge trapping onto dipole states during the freeze-out process, reveals a value of 0.034 ± 0.0017 meV. These findings shed light on the intricate charge states influenced by the interplay of temperature and electric field, with potential implications for the sensitivity in detecting low-mass dark matter.

Magnetic order in nanogranular iron germanium (Fe 0.53 Ge 0.47 ) films

We study the effect of strain on the magnetic properties and magnetization configurations in nanogranular Fe x Ge 1-x films (x = 0.53 ± 0.05) with and without B20 FeGe nanocrystals surrounded by an amorphous structure. Relaxed films on amorphous silicon nitride membranes reveal a disordered skyrmion phase while films near and on top of a rigid substrate favor ferromagnetism and an anisotropic hybridization of Fe d levels and spin-polarized Ge sp band states. The weakly coupled topological states emerge at room temperature and become more abundant at cryogenic temperatures without showing indications of pinning at defects or confinement to individual grains. These results demonstrate the possibility to control magnetic exchange and topological magnetism by strain and inform magnetoelasticity-mediated voltage control of topological phases in amorphous quantum materials.

Measurement of Ionization Produced by 254 eVnr Nuclear Recoils in Germanium

Ionization produced by low-energy nuclear recoils is among the primary direct signatures of dark matter interactions. Despite the urgency of dark matter detection and the recent measurements of coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering, detector response to nuclear recoils is not well characterized in the keVnr and sub-keVnr regime across a variety of materials. We have re-performed a measurement of the ionization produced by monoenergetic 254 eVnr nuclear recoils in Ge with improved digital electronics and additional systematic studies. Our results indicate an ionization yield of 64 +/- 8 eVee corresponding to a quenching factor of 25 +/- 3%, greater than the 14% predicted by the Lindhard model. This ionization enhancement could greatly improve the sensitivity of high-purity Ge detectors in dark matter detection and measurement of neutrinos via coherent scattering.
