Synthesis and disassembly of an organometallic polymer comprising redox-active Co 4 S 4 clusters and Janus biscarbene linkers

Here, we show for the first time that main-chain organometallic polymers (MCOPs) can be prepared from Janus N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) linkers and polynuclear cluster nodes. The crosslinked framework Co 4 S 4 -MCOP is synthesized via ligand displacement reactions and undergoes reversible electron transfer in the solid state. Discrete molecular cluster species can be excised from the framework by digesting the solid in solutions of excess monocarbene. Lastly, we demonstrate a synthetic route to monodisperse framework particles via coordination modulation.

Synthesis, structure, and electrochemical properties of [LNi(R f )(C 4 F 8 )] - and [LNi(R f ) 3 ] - complexes

The new anionic nickelate complexes [(MeCN)Ni(C 4 F 8 )(CF 3 )] -, [(MeCN)Ni(C 4 F 8 )(C 2 F 5 )] - , [(IMes)Ni(C 4 F 8 )(CF 3 )] - , [(IMes)Ni(CF 3 ) 3 ] - (IMes = 1,3-bis(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)imidazol-2-ylidene), and [(F-NHC)Ni(Rf) 3 ] - (F-NHC = 1,3-bis(2,4-F2Ph), 2,4,6-F 3 Ph- or 3,4,5-F 3 Ph)imidazol-2-ylidene; (R f = CF 3 or C 2 F 5 ) were synthesized and structurally characterized. The electrochemical properties of all new compounds were revealed by cyclic voltammetry studies and compared to the known CF 3 analogue [(MeCN)Ni(CF 3 ) 3 ] -. The IMes-coordinated complexes exhibited initial oxidation events that were well-separated from a second oxidation process in the cyclic voltammograms. The complexes containing F-substituted NHC ligands [(F-NHC)Ni(CF 3 ) 3 ] - are structurally quite similar to the IMes derivative and reveal also two separated oxidation waves in their cyclic voltammograms. The absolute potentials as well as the separation between the two waves vary with the substitution pattern, suggesting that the NHC ligand environment (NHC = N-heterocyclic carbene) is an interesting platform for the development of new redox-triggered reactions that release trifluoromethyl and perfluoroalkyl radicals upon oxidation.

Elucidating the role of reactive nitrogen intermediates in hetero-cyclization during hydrothermal liquefaction of food waste

Hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) has emerged as a promising strategy for converting abundant, water-rich organic streams into an energy-dense, sustainable, biocrude. Despite major strides in improving oil yields and process intensification, a key underlying challenge persists in relating the composition of the feedstock to the ultimate fate of nitrogen, which is especially important for biocrude quality. To elucidate how nitrogen partitions into the respective gas, aqueous, oil and solid hydrothermal products, food waste was treated under HTL conditions (15 wt% solids, 575 K reaction temperature, and 1 hour reaction time) and elemental, chromatographic and mass spectroscopy analyses were performed on the products to establish dominant product classes and to close mass, carbon, and nitrogen balances. Liquid products (aqueous and biocrude) were found to contain nearly 60% of the nitrogen, with a majority of the biocrude-phase nitrogen in the form of amides. Ab initio thermodynamic and kinetic simulations on model reactants were used to evaluate potential reaction pathways involving reactive nitrogen intermediates. A subsequent kinetic model was evaluated at reaction temperatures ranging 300–1000 K and for a range of feedstock compositions to identify primary reaction pathways. The Maillard reaction is revealed to be the dominant pathway for converting reactive nitrogen intermediates into observed products, especially those in which nitrogen is present as a heterocyclic aromatic. Subsequent product analysis by Fourier Transform Ion Cyclotron Resonance Mass Spectrometry (FT-ICR MS) confirms strong agreement among the experimental data, kinetic model and proposed Maillard pathways.

Catalytic production of tetrahydropyran (THP): a biomass-derived, economically competitive solvent with demonstrated use in plastic dissolution

Tetrahydropyran (THP) is a five-carbon heterocyclic ether that is non-carcinogenic, non-peroxide forming, biodegradable, and economically competitive with tetrahydrofuran (THF) as a solvent. In this work, THP has been synthesized from renewable biomass at >99.8% selectivity and 98% yield via hydrogenation of furfural-derived 3,4-dihydropyran (DHP) over Ni/SiO 2 in a continuous flow reactor at 150–200 °C. The apparent activation energy of THP formation is 31 kJ mol -1 , and the reaction orders with respect to the partial pressures of H 2 , DHP, and THP are: 2, 1, and -0.3. The kinetic data has been fitted to a Hougen–Watson model where the rate limiting step is the hydrogenation of adsorbed DHP. Ni/SiO 2 is shown to have a low deactivation rate constant of 0.012 h -1 over 100 h time on stream and can be regenerated in situ. As a performance advantage, THP is shown to be resistant to ring opening polymerization under strongly acidic conditions that THF is not, revealing it to be a superior solvent. Further, the minimum selling price of THP is competitive with the market price of THF ($$900 – 1400 per ton ) at a DHP feedstock cost of $1000 per ton. Conductor-like Screening Model for Real Solvents (COSMO-RS) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations with 1008 solvents and 8 common plastics have demonstrated that THP can serve as an alternative solvent to THF, 2-methyltetrahydrofuran (MeTHF), and cyclopentyl methyl ether (CPME) for plastic dissolution, especially low-density polyethylene (LDPE), polypropylene (PP), polystyrene (PS) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC). This work establishes THP as a green solvent with excellent thermal, chemical and peroxidative stability that can be used for numerous applications, including waste plastic recycling.

Probing elemental speciation in hydrochar produced from hydrothermal liquefaction of anaerobic digestates using quantitative X-ray diffraction

Valorization of hydrochar, a solid byproduct from hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) of anaerobically-digested agriculture wastes (digestates), requires fundamental knowledge of elemental speciation. This study investigated the effects of reaction temperatures (320–360 °C), digestate pH (3.5–8), and digestate cellulose-to-lignin ratios (0.2–1.8) on the speciation (chemical form) and composition of organics and inorganics in hydrochars produced during hydrothermal treatment. Quantitative X-ray diffraction (XRD) method was the primary technique used to characterize hydrochars. The comprehensive XRD pattern processing including the Rietveld refinement protocols demonstrated that the organic phase was comprised of mostly crystalline monocyclic, heterocyclic, and polycyclic aromatics with diverse aliphatic and aromatic substituents, while the inorganic mineral phase consisted of calcium-phosphates, magnesium-phosphates, calcium-carbonates, and magnesium-carbonates. Further, XRD results were validated by the elemental yields of products and the distribution of chemical functionalities measured using solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The characterization data were used to evaluate proposed mechanistic pathways using compositional analysis of biocrude and aqueous-phase coproducts. Mechanistic pathways developed in the study suggested that benzoic acids, phenols, benzaldehydes, phenolic aldehydes, α-dicarbonyls, and α-hydroxycarbonyls were responsible for the precipitation of organics through various reactions depending on operating conditions. Meanwhile, the formation of inorganic compounds appeared to be consistently represented by reactions including dehydration, hydrolysis, endergonic reduction, and structure rearrangement of native minerals in the digestates. This study provides basic knowledge needed to create and assess potential elemental speciation pathways. In addition, the results of the study facilitate the specification of process conditions to optimize targeted utilization routes of hydrochar for more economically-feasible and sustainable HTL processing.

Synthesis, structure, and stability of a novel 2 H -azirine under pressure

We have synthesized 2,3-diphenyl-2H-azirine, a strained unsaturated heterocyclic compound, and examined its high-pressure behavior to above 10 GPa using diamond anvil cell techniques. Single crystal X-ray diffraction at ambient conditions reveals that the crystal structure is hexagonal and consists of interesting helices surrounding voids in the structure. A continuous shift of the Raman and infrared vibrational spectra with increasing pressure is observed, indicating that the molecular structure is preserved to at least 8 GPa at room temperature. High-pressure synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction shows that the hexagonal structure persists, with a smooth compression of the a and c parameters to 10 GPa. The structural stability under pressure is attributed to the reduction in void size within the helical framework despite the inherent strain and reactivity of the molecule. The channels in the structure could encapsulate small molecules for gas or energy storage applications.

Catalysis activity and chemoselectivity control with the trans ligand in Ru–H pincer complexes

(PhPN H P)Ru(H)(Cl)(CO) serves as a precatalyst to a variety of important catalytic transformations but most improvements have been restricted to the replacement of the CO ligand cis to the hydride or changing the Ph groups of the pincer for other aryl or alkyl groups. The ligand trans to the hydride is often another hydride and studies that utilize other trans ligands in catalysis are limited. Here, in this work, we synthesized a series of [(PhPN H P)Ru(H)(CO)(L)][BPh 4 ] complexes bearing isonitrile, PMe 3 , or a N-heterocyclic ligand trans to the Ru–H. We compared the new complexes abilities to catalyze the transfer hydrogenation of ketones. We found that all the trans ligands improved the chemoselectivity and stability of the catalysts; and strong π-accepting ligands resulted in poor catalytic activities whereas strong σ-donating ligands accelerated the catalysis.

Reaction dynamics of S( 3 P) with 1,3-butadiene and isoprene: crossed-beam scattering, low-temperature flow experiments, and high-level electronic structure calculations

Sulfur atoms serve as key players in diverse chemical processes, from astrochemistry at very low temperature to combustion at high temperature. Building upon our prior findings, showing cyclization to thiophenes following the reaction of ground-state sulfur atoms with dienes, we here extend this investigation to include many additional reaction products, guided by detailed theoretical predictions. The outcomes highlight the complex formation of products during intersystem crossing (ISC) to the singlet surfaces. Here, we employed crossed-beam velocity map imaging and high-level ab initio methods to explore the reaction of S( 3 P) with 1,3-butadiene and isoprene under single-collision conditions and in low-temperature flows. For the butadiene reaction, our experimental results show the formation of thiophene via H 2 loss, a 2H-thiophenyl radical through H loss, and thioketene through ethene loss at a slightly higher collision energy compared to previous observations. Complementary Chirped-Pulse Fourier-Transform mmWave spectroscopy (CP-FTmmW) measurements in a uniform flow confirmed the formation of thioketene in the reaction at 20 K. For the isoprene reaction, we observed analogous products along with the 2H-thiophenyl radical arising from methyl loss and C 3 H 4 S (loss of ethene or H 2 + acetylene). CP-FTmmW detected the formation of thioformaldehyde via loss of 1,3-butadiene, again in the 20 K flow. Coupled-cluster calculations on the pathways found by the automated kinetic workflow code KinBot support these findings and indicate ISC to the singlet surface, leading to the generation of various long-lived intermediates, including 5-membered heterocycles.

Organocatalysis promoted by 1,2,3-triazolylidenes (MICs): carbenes which make a difference

N-Heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) hold a unique significance in organometallic catalysis and are powerful organocatalysts for a variety of organic transformations involving crucial intermediates such as Breslow intermediates (BIs), deprotonated BIs (BI − s), ketyl radicals (KRs), and acyl azoliums (AAs). To address the remaining challenges facing reactions catalyzed by NHCs, non-classical stable carbenes, namely 1,2,3-triazolylidenes (MICs), cousins of NHCs, have shown great potential. MICs share similar features with typical NHCs but possess unique characteristics, such as enhanced σ-donor ability and absence of dimerization. Consequently, they have emerged as effective metal-free carbene catalysts for various chemical transformations. Furthermore, this review provides an overview of the fundamental characteristics of 1,2,3-triazolylidenes, along with the significant organic synthetic applications of these carbenes.

Well-defined Pt(0) heterogeneous hydrosilylation catalysts supported by a surface bound phosphenium

Single atom, low valent transition metals are important for heterogeneous catalysis but are challenging to generate and stabilize in a well-defined manner. Herein, we explored the functionalization of silica with well-defined N-heterocyclic phosphenium (NHP) ions to heterogenize low-valent metals. The surface electro-statically bound [NHP] + coordinate to Pt(0) precursors resulting in well-defined, chemisorbed [(NHP)Pt(0)L n ] + sites. The resulting materials catalyze the hydrosilylation of alkynes and exhibit activities and selectivities that rival the current industry standard homogeneous catalysts. The catalysts leach Pt limiting their recyclability; however, recycling studies support that the high regioselectivities arise from heterogeneous sites and Pt particles do not form on the surface. Here we suspect that this phosphenium-based immobilization strategy will result in stable, tunable, low valent heterogeneous transition metal catalysts in a wider array of catalytic reactions.

Organo-catalyzed deamination of polystyrene sulfonamide for diverse post-polymerization modification of styrenic polymers

Post-polymerization modification allows for the incorporation of functional groups that would otherwise be incompatible with polymerization conditions, enhancing synthetic efficiency and facilitating the creation of complex polymer architectures for specialized applications, such as biomedical devices, electronics, and advanced coatings. Herein, we report a method inspired by late-stage functionalization of small molecules for the post-polymerization modification of aromatic polymers, specifically polystyrene (PS), under mild reaction conditions. First, PS was converted to polystyrene sulfonamide (PSSNH 2 ) with an 85% yield using established procedures. PSSNH 2 was subsequently transformed into a reactive sulfinate by deamination using an N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) catalyst and benzaldehyde. The catalytic process was optimized by varying catalysts, solvents, bases, temperatures, and reaction times. The highest degree of deamination was 88% with a bicyclic NHC and K 2 CO 3 base in DMSO for 18 hours at 120 °C. The reactive sulfinate was then treated with various functional reagents, resulting in a library of aromatic polymers with different substituents with high degrees of functionalization ranging from 74% to 98%. Similarly, we modified expanded PS waste with trifluorobutyl iodide with a degree of functionalization of 72%, highlighting a new avenue for plastic upgrading. This approach could be used to rapidly generate functionalized polymers from PS with potential applications, including antibacterial properties and flame retardancy.

Highly-destabilized ligand field excited states of iron carbene complexes and their relation to charge transfer state lifetimes

Lifetimes of photoexcited charge transfer (CT) states in transition metal chromophores are influenced by low-lying ligand field (LF) excited states, especially for 3d metal complexes. To manipulate interactions between LF and CT states, it is important to be able to control LF excited state energies using tunable synthetic variables. In this report, we use Fe 2p3d L 3 -edge resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) to measure LF excited state energies of three homoleptic iron chromophores coordinated by strong-field N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs). We investigate the effect of oxidation state and ligand scaffold on LF energies and covalency parameters. A cyclometalated bis(NHC) ligand affords both high LF excited state energies (and thus high 10 Dq) as well as high metal–ligand covalency compared to other iron complexes with very strong-field ligands. However, for the set of complexes investigated, we do not observe meaningful correlation between the LF excited state energies and the CT excited state lifetimes. These results illustrate that targeting long-lived CT excited states necessitates control of multiple molecular excited state properties, with destabilization of the LF excited state energies proving necessary, but insufficient, to control the CT excited state lifetime in Fe carbene complexes.
