Characterizing the scientific potential of satellite sensors

Eleven thematic mapper (TM) radiometric calibration programs were tested and evaluated in support of the task to characterize the potential of LANDSAT TM digital imagery for scientific investigations in the Earth sciences and terrestrial physics. Three software errors related to integer overflow, divide by zero, and nonexist file group were found and solved. Raw, calibrated, and corrected image groups that were created and stored on the Barker2 disk are enumerated. Black and white pixel print files were created for various subscenes of a San Francisco scene (ID 40392-18152). The development of linear regression software is discussed. The output of the software and its function are described. Future work in TM radiometric calibration, image processing, and software development is outlined.

Evaluation of the Radiometric Quality of the TM Data Using Clustering, Linear Transformations and Multispectral Distance Measures

The radiometric quality of LANDSAT 4 TM data for the classification and identification of Earth surface features was evaluated. Techniques employed in the evaluation included clustering, data compression (linear transformations), multispectral distance measures, and hierarchical classification methods. TM and MSS data for the Chicago, Illinois test site were studied. In order to determine the radiometric quality of the TM thermal data for temperature mapping of surface water, a test site was selected within the area covered by the TM scene (Scene ID: 40101-16025) gathered over Illinois. This site was chosen because it includes a surface water body with a large range of temperatures, i.e., a cooling pond for the Dresden nuclear power plant and the junction of two rivers.

C2 photolytic processes in cometary comae

The C2 column densities toward comets Tuttle (1980h) and Meier (1980q) are determined on the basis of 1.15-nm-resolution 340-620-nm observations obtained with the IDS spectrograph on the 2.7-m telescope at McDonald Observatory in December 1980, and February 1981 (1980q only). The data are presented in graphs and fit with the nonequilibrium-chemistry model of Cochran (1982), and the rates of the photolytic creation and destruction of C2 are calculated as 5 x 10 to the -4th/sec and 4 x 10 to the -6th/sec, respectively.

Overview of solid particle LV seeding techniques used at UTRC

Due to the failure of existing seeders to meet the stringent specifications required for benchmark experiments in high pressure, high temperature, rapidly accelerating flowfields, an effort is made to improve an existing solid particle seeder. The goal is to produce a more monodisperse seed from the 0.3 micro alumina powder with more than 99 percent of the particles in the submicron range while maintaining a high seeding rate. Coiled-wire inserts are installed within the ends of the nitrogen injection lines in the primary seeder to produce swirling conical jets to vigorously agitate the seed bed. A secondary swirler, constructed from a 25 cm length of 3.8 cm ID steel pipe having threaded end caps, is connected to the output line of the primary seeder. The seeded nitrogen from the primary seeder is injected tangentially at near sonic velocity into the secondary swirler 9.4 cm above its base. Independently controlled auxiliary nitrogen used to increase the swirl in the secondary chamber is also injected tangentially 2.5 cm below the seeded nitrogen lines. Large seed particles are collected by bleeds in the swirler cap and directed overboard. The remaining seeded nitrogen is collected on the center line of the secondary swirler and ducted to the rig.

Spectrophotometry of seventeen comets. II - The continuum

One-hundred-twenty IDS scans of the continua in 17 comets are analyzed to determine dust production rates and color as a function of heliocentric distance. Improved theory indicates that the dust loading of gas typically varies between 0.05 and 0.3 by mass (assuming a geometric albedo of 0.05 and oxygen expansion at 1 km/s) except during outbursts, when it rises much higher. P/Encke near perihelion falls much lower yet, to 0.004 or less. Dust loading is not always constant as a function of time in a given comet. Dust color is typically reddish, as has often been noted before.

Comet Kopff - A case for mantle development

Comet Kopff was observed during its 1983 apparition. Intensified Dissector Scanner (IDS) spectra were obtained mapping the distribution of the gases in the coma. The comet appears to have a preperihelion brightness maximum in monochromatic light. This result is shown to be model independent. These data are consistent with a partial mantle developing due to the high obliquity of the comet.

Unstable 06.5f?p star HD 148937 and its interstellar environment

The massive, early-type star HD 148937 (spectral type 06.5?p) is surrounded by a unique set of nebulosities. A spherically symmetric Stromgren sphere (Radius approx. - 25 pc), an ellipsoidal filamentary nebulosity (semimajor axis approx. - 5 pc) interpreted as a stellar-wind-blown shell, and a bipolar nebular complex (semimajor axis approx. - 1 pc) with HD 148937 located in the apparent center of symmetry. Observations of these nebulosities are reported (narrow-band charge coupled devices imaging, image dissector scanner (IDS) spectrophotometry, high resolution spectroscopy) in an attempt to establish a consistent model of HD 148937 and its nebulosities.

Optical observations of very low ionization HII regions in the large Magellanic cloud

Several very low ionization isolated HII regions were detected on a prism-objective plate of the Large Magellanic Cloud. Most of the objects show a very weak (OIII) lambda 5007 emission line and, on the other hand the (OII) lambda 6584 doublets are very intense. This kind of objects seem to be ideal in order to determine accurate N and O abundance, avoiding the use of large ionization correction factors in the N abundance determination. Spectrophotometric observations of these regions were carried out with the 4 m telescope and the 2-D Frutti spectrograph at Cerro Tololo, and with the 1.52 m and the Image Dissector Scanner (IDS) at La Silla, ESO. The wavelength range lambda lambda 3700 to 7000 A was covered. Calibrated fluxes of the emission lines detected were measured, and from these data preliminary results of physical conditions of the gas as well as some ionic abundances were derived. Comparisons of the observations with ionization structure models show that the effective temperatures of the ionizing stars are less than 35,000 K. Possible abundances gradients across the large megallanic cloud are discussed.

System identification for modeling for control of flexible structures

The major components of a design and operational flight strategy for flexible structure control systems are presented. In this strategy an initial distributed parameter control design is developed and implemented from available ground test data and on-orbit identification using sophisticated modeling and synthesis techniques. The reliability of this high performance controller is directly linked to the accuracy of the parameters on which the design is based. Because uncertainties inevitably grow without system monitoring, maintaining the control system requires an active on-line system identification function to supply parameter updates and covariance information. Control laws can then be modified to improve performance when the error envelopes are decreased. In terms of system safety and stability the covariance information is of equal importance as the parameter values themselves. If the on-line system ID function detects an increase in parameter error covariances, then corresponding adjustments must be made in the control laws to increase robustness. If the error covariances exceed some threshold, an autonomous calibration sequence could be initiated to restore the error enveloped to an acceptable level.

Brightness asymmetry in comet Kopff

Observations of comet Kopff, obtained at 350-650 nm with resolution 1.15 nm using an IDS spectrograph on the 2.7-m telescope at McDonald Observatory during the 1983 apparition, are reported, summarizing the results of Cochran (1985). The data are presented in tables and graphs and analyzed using two models: the one-dimensional nonequilibrium-chemistry code developed by Cochran (1982 and 1985) for comet Stephan-Oterma, or the simpler model of Haser (1957). A brightness asymmetry in comet Kopff is attributed to preperihelion gas excess and postperihelion gas depletion.

Dynamic loads on twin jet exhaust nozzles due to shock noise

Acoustic near field data were collected with model single and twin jet nozzles to determine if closely spaced nozzles produce higher acoustic loading than do single nozzles. The tests were spurred by structural failure of the B-1 exhaust nozzle external flaps and similar damage on the F-15. The test was performed using two 5/8 in. ID pipes machined and placed side-by-side to mimic B-1 nozzles. A microphone mounted on the internozzle fairing measured acoustic levels near the nozzle exit plane. The nozzles oscillated significantly more than did a single nozzle over a wide range of nozzle pressure ratios. Acoustic levels in the dual jets exceeded single jet noise by as much as 20 dB, making acoustic resonance a definite candidate for structural damage in the twin jet configuration.

Comet Giacobini-Zinner - A normal comet?

Observations of Comet Giacobini-Zinner were obtained during its 1985 apparition using an IDS spectrograph at McDonald Observatory. Column densities and production rates were computed. The production rates were compared to observations of other 'normal' comets. Giacobini-Zinner is shown to be depleted in C2 and C3 relative to CN. These production rates are down by a factor of 5.

Electronic data generation and display system

The Electronic Data Generation and Display System (EDGADS) is a field tested paperless technical manual system. The authoring provides subject matter experts the option of developing procedureware from digital or hardcopy inputs of technical information from text, graphics, pictures, and recorded media (video, audio, etc.). The display system provides multi-window presentations of graphics, pictures, animations, and action sequences with text and audio overlays on high resolution color CRT and monochrome portable displays. The database management system allows direct access via hierarchical menus, keyword name, ID number, voice command or touch of a screen pictoral of the item (ICON). It contains operations and maintenance technical information at three levels of intelligence for a total system.

Definition of NASTRAN sets by use of parametric geometry

Many finite element preprocessors describe finite element model geometry with points, lines, surfaces and volumes. One method for describing these basic geometric entities is by use of parametric cubics which are useful for representing complex shapes. The lines, surfaces and volumes may be discretized for follow on finite element analysis. The ability to limit or selectively recover results from the finite element model is extremely important to the analyst. Equally important is the ability to easily apply boundary conditions. Although graphical preprocessors have made these tasks easier, model complexity may not lend itself to easily identify a group of grid points desired for data recovery or application of constraints. A methodology is presented which makes use of the assignment of grid point locations in parametric coordinates. The parametric coordinates provide a convenient ordering of the grid point locations and a method for retrieving the grid point ID's from the parent geometry. The selected grid points may then be used for the generation of the appropriate set and constraint cards.

Prototype architecture for a VLSI level zero processing system

The prototype architecture and implementation of a high-speed level zero processing (LZP) system are discussed. Due to the new processing algorithm and VLSI technology, the prototype LZP system features compact size, low cost, high processing throughput, and easy maintainability and increased reliability. Though extensive control functions have been done by hardware, the programmability of processing tasks makes it possible to adapt the system to different data formats and processing requirements. It is noted that the LZP system can handle up to 8 virtual channels and 24 sources with combined data volume of 15 Gbytes per orbit. For greater demands, multiple LZP systems can be configured in parallel, each called a processing channel and assigned a subset of virtual channels. The telemetry data stream will be steered into different processing channels in accordance with their virtual channel IDs. This super system can cope with a virtually unlimited number of virtual channels and sources. In the near future, it is expected that new disk farms with data rate exceeding 150 Mbps will be available from commercial vendors due to the advance in disk drive technology.

Analysis and design of helium-buffered face seals for the SSME high-pressure oxygen turbopump

One form of a gas-buffered seal consists of two opposed fluid-film face seals, each mating against a single collar. The buffer fluid is introduced at the OD and flows through the radial clearances of each seal to opposite and separate environments at the IDs. This arrangement was investigated for the helium buffer seals applied to the oxidizer pump of the Space Shuttle Main Engine (SSME). A variety of face configurations were considered, and the self-energized-hydrostatic and spiral-groove geometries were selected for detailed evaluation. Fluid-film performance, dynamic response, and thermoelastic distortions were determined. Because of very high temperature gradients, distortions of the turbine-side seal ring were excessive. Otherwise, performance was excellent in all respects.

The Langley Research Center CSI phase-0 evolutionary model testbed-design and experimental results

A testbed for the development of Controls Structures Interaction (CSI) technology is described. The design philosophy, capabilities, and early experimental results are presented to introduce some of the ongoing CSI research at NASA-Langley. The testbed, referred to as the Phase 0 version of the CSI Evolutionary model (CEM), is the first stage of model complexity designed to show the benefits of CSI technology and to identify weaknesses in current capabilities. Early closed loop test results have shown non-model based controllers can provide an order of magnitude increase in damping in the first few flexible vibration modes. Model based controllers for higher performance will need to be robust to model uncertainty as verified by System ID tests. Data are presented that show finite element model predictions of frequency differ from those obtained from tests. Plans are also presented for evolution of the CEM to study integrated controller and structure design as well as multiple payload dynamics.
