Introduction to the Monte Carlo Method [Slides]

The goal here is to introduce you to the Monte Carlo (MC) method. MC is a very powerful simulation technique. Very simple examples will be used. Potential MC users have diverse backgrounds, but you should see from the examples how the method could be applied to your field of study.

In-Device Delay: Introduction to Obscurant Physcial Protection System

The Office of Radiological Security (ORS) In-Device Delay (IDD) program has undertaken a project to research and develop a novel protection system for industrial irradiators that contain high-activity Co-60 sources. Based on adversary testing conducted by ORS, it is was determined that to successfully accomplish the theft of the target material, the adversary will require visual contact of the sources and source rack located at the bottom of the pool. Therefore, if a means of obscuring or visually hiding the sources in the pool can be achieved (while adhering to facility operations, safety, and regulatory requirements), then illicit source theft will be significantly hindered. This project aims to develop a low-cost, non-propriety obscurant that, when an adversary action is detected, the obscurant will be deployed into the pool quickly, rendering visual observation of the source problematic; however, this obscurant will not otherwise disturb the sources, source rack, and filtration system. The obscurant will remain in the pool until removed by another process.

Studies of Beam Intensity Effects in Fermilab Booster Synchrotron. Part I: Introduction, Tune and Chromaticity Scans of Beam Losses

Detrimental beam dynamics effects limit performance of high intensity rapid cycling synchrotrons (RCS) such as the 8 GeV Fermilab Booster. Here we report the results of comprehensive studies of various beam intensity dependent effects in the Booster. Part I covers the dependencies of the Booster beam intensity losses on the total number of protons per pulse and on key operational parameters such as the machine tunes and chromaticities. In Part II we cross-check two methods of the beam emittance measurements (the multi-wires proportional chambers and the ionization profile monitors), analyze the intensity dependent emittance growth effects and discuss the ultimate performance of the machine now and after foreseen and proposed upgrades.

Initial development for the introduction of provisions for irradiation effects in Division 5 rules

Heat pipe microreactor concept involves the use of a solid core block to encapsulate the nuclear fuel and the passive extraction of heat from the core block to the heat exchanger block by advanced heat pipes. The core block is a key component of the heat pipe microreactor design. It integrates the functions of reactor vessel, core structural components and fuel cladding of traditional Gen IV advanced reactor designs into one single structure. The effects of irradiation on the structural failure modes are outside the scope of the rules of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, Section III, Division 5, Subsection HB, Subpart B for metallic Class A components. Methods to account for the irradiation effect were investigated in order to develop design methods that can be applied to the core block design in the heat pipe microreactor. This report presents an initial development of an approach to account for the irradiation effects in the design rules.

Hands-on Introduction to Shock Physics (2020 Report, RR2020-IPD-1)

Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) researchers have played key roles in the development of high-pressure science and shock physics since the 1950s. Central to the Laboratory’s experimental capability are multiple impact systems and explosive loading capabilities that span impact velocities in excess of 8 km/s. More recently, our efforts have taken us to 3rd and 4th generation light sources where these loading platforms are coupled to X-ray diagnostics that are now providing new insights into matter-at-extremes. As the availability of these new diagnostics and loading techniques increases, there is an increased need within the high pressure community for researchers with the knowledge base and expertise to use them. Few institutions offer any level of theoretical or experimental coursework designed to train students for work in the field of shock physics or dynamic compression science, and those that do cannot meet the current demand of the national laboratories.

Introduction to InterSpec for Gamma-Ray Analysis [Slides]

InterSpec is a spectrum viewing and analysis tool that can be used for nuclide identification and quantification. Developed at Sandia National Laboratories, it is open source and can be obtained at: https://github.com/sandialabs/interspec/releases. These slides do not cover nuclide quantification and only touch on nuclide identification (ID).
