Recent Advances in Design of Low Cost Film Concentrator and Low Pressure Free Piston Stirling Engines for Solar Power

The free piston Stirling-linear alternator was shown to be scalable to power levels of tens of kilowatts in a form which is simple, efficient, long lived and relatively inexpensive. It avoids entirely the vexing problem of high pressure shaft, and its control requirements are not severe nor do they represent a significant threat to durability. Linear alternators have demonstrated high efficiency and moderate weight, and are capable of delivering 3 phase power from single machines without great increases of cost or complexity. There remains no apparent impediments to the commercial exploitation of the free piston engine for solar electric power generation.

Reflector antennas with low sidelobes, low cross polarization, and high aperture efficiency

Techniques are presented for computing the horn near field patterns on the subreflectors and for correcting the phase center errors of the horn pattern by shaping the subreflector surface. The diffraction pattern computations for scanned beams are described. The effects of dish aperture diffraction on pattern bandwidth are investigated. A model antenna consisting of a reflector, shaped subreflector, and corrugated feed horn is described.

Low-temperature deposition of low resistivity ZnSe films by reactive sputtering

The use of reactive dc magnetron cosputtering of Zn and the dopant In in an H2Se/Ar gaseous mixture is described. It is observed that initial deposition using pure Zn targets produced yellowish transparent ZnSe films on glass with a film resistivity of 10 to the 8th ohms cm and deposition using a Zn target doped with a fixed 1 percent of In produced ZnSe films with resistivities of about 10,000 ohms cm. The improvement of film conductivity by optimizing the In content in the ZnSe films is discussed; the ZnSe resistivity dependence on In flux is studied. Optical absorption/transmission measurements reveal a photon energy band gap of 2.65 eV at room temperature and X-ray diffraction show highly oriented polycrystalline films on glass with the c axis parallel to the plane of the film. Compositional analysis was performed and the Zn/Se ratio is measure as 48.8/49.0 with an In concentration of 1.16 percent. ZnSe films deposited on glass and conducting SnO2-coated glass substrates with a resistance of 20 ohms cm and a substrate temperature of 120 C have been fabricated.

Observation of low energy particle precipitation at low altitude in the equatorial zone

Precipitation of protons in the equatorial zone was investigated by the Phoenix-1 experiment on the S81-1 mission from May to November, 1982. The protons show a precipitation peak along the line of minimum magnetic field strength with a FWHM of 13 deg. The index of equatorial pitch angle distribution is about 19. The peak proton flux shows a fifth-power altitude dependence, and the proton flux shows approximately a factor of 3 times increase in 1982 compared to that in 1969 due, possibly, to the stronger solar maximum conditions of 10.7-cm radiation in 1982.

Low-cost, high-resolution, single-structure array telescopes for imaging of low-earth-orbit satellites

Telescopes that are designed for the unconventional imaging of near-earth satellites must follow unique design rules. The costs must be reduced substantially over those of the conventional telescope designs, and the design must accommodate a technique to circumvent atmospheric distortion of the image. Apertures of 12 m and more along with altitude-altitude mounts that provide high tracking rates are required. A novel design for such a telescope, optimized for speckle imaging, has been generated. Its mount closely resembles a radar mount, and it does not use the conventional dome. Costs for this design are projected to be considerably lower than those for the conventional designs. Results of a design study are presented with details of the electro-optical and optical designs.

The development of new, low-cost perfluoroalkylether fluids with excellent low and high-temperature properties

A series of perfluoroalkylether (PFAE) fluids were synthesized by direct fluorination. Viscosity-temperature properties, oxidation stabilities, oxidation-corrosion properties, and lubricity were determined. The fluids were tested in the presence of common elastomers to check for compatibility. The bulk modulus of each was measured to determine if any could be used as nonflammable aircraft hydraulic fluid. It was determined that as the carbon to oxygen ratio decreases, the viscometric properties improve, the fluids may become poor lubricants, the bulk modulus increases, the surface tension increases, and the fluid density increases. The presence of difluoromethylene oxide units in the polymer does not seriously lower the oxidation and oxidation-corrosion stabilities as long as the difluoromethylene oxide units are separated by other units.

Calculations of separated vortex flows at low speed for low-aspect-ratio wings

An implicit finite-difference scheme has been developed for solving three-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. Computations for complicated vortical flows past several sharp- and round-edged delta and double-delta wings at high angles of attack and sideslip are discussed. Computed results demonstrate the effectiveness of the present method and show good agreement with experimental data.
