Our teams design high-resolution MeV x-ray radiography systems for National security missions [Poster]

The NNSS has been at the forefront of custom high-fidelity x-ray/gamma radiographic imaging solutions that serve our national security for over five decades. Our radiography team utilizes expertise in physics modeling and analysis, along with optical, mechanical, and electrical design, in close collaboration with our customers, to develop imaging methods and capabilities that go beyond their needs. Conceptual designs are developed through R&D efforts to provide solutions for the specific problem at hand. Field systems are designed and built in-house, then qualified utilizing a range of facilities across the National Security Enterprise. Radiographic imaging systems are deployed by our team in the most challenging environments. The NNSS has a strong math and programming team that provides novel on-site image analysis methods that extract crucial information from data returned in field tests.

Index of Classified Reports Collection now available Vital resource for Weapons researchers, today’s mission work

The collection is made up of classified technical reports containing weapons data dating back to the start of the nuclear security enterprise. The information is compiled into reports, slides, handbooks and literature. It originated from Los Alamos, Lawrence Livermore, and Sandia Labs, as well as from the Department of Defense and likely every other organization involved in nuclear testing, including contractors and those that are now defunct.

An evaluation of risks associated with relying on Fortran for mission critical codes for the next 15 years

This document examines risks associated with relying on Fortran for codes critical to nuclear security into the late 2030s. The study was requested by the LANL ASC program office to support its decisions. To date, much of the discussion about the prospects for Fortran has tended to be informal and centered on questions (such as, “will the language be around in 20 years”) that are impossible to answer with any certainty. By focusing on estimates of the likelihood associated with different outcomes, rather than on specific predictions, we hope to clarify points of disagreement within the community and strengthen the analytic basis for reasoning about the future.

The Digital Assurance for High Consequence Systems (DAHCS) Mission Campaign Whitepaper

The DAHCS (pronounced “Dax”) MC is a 7-year, $\$$45 million research portfolio within Sandia’s Laboratory Directed Research and Development program. The DAHCS MC arose in response to a great need: to ensure that the use of digital technologies does not weaken our nation’s high consequence systems. Digital technologies offer many benefits in speed, cost, and flexibility, and we seek to reap those benefits without introducing new system failures. However, digital technologies cannot be evaluated the same way as analog technologies. Initiatives across the nation highlight the capability gap that prevents efficient, effective digital assurance. The Challenge Today’s digital assurance tools, techniques, and methods are inadequate to confidently characterize, assess, and manage digital risk; they are ad hoc, slow, costly, and rarely scalable to increasingly complex digital technologies. The rapidly evolving cyber threat landscape exacerbates this problem because digital assurance now must secure against digital risks now and in the future, including those introduced by rapidly evolving technologies, adversaries, and systems.
