Characterization and engineering of a two-enzyme system for plastics depolymerization

Significance Deconstruction of recalcitrant polymers, such as cellulose or chitin, is accomplished in nature by synergistic enzyme cocktails that evolved over millions of years. In these systems, soluble dimeric or oligomeric intermediates are typically released via interfacial biocatalysis, and additional enzymes often process the soluble intermediates into monomers for microbial uptake. The recent discovery of a two-enzyme system for polyethylene terephthalate (PET) deconstruction, which employs one enzyme to convert the polymer into soluble intermediates and another enzyme to produce the constituent PET monomers (MHETase), suggests that nature may be evolving similar deconstruction strategies for synthetic plastics. This study on the characterization of the MHETase enzyme and synergy of the two-enzyme PET depolymerization system may inform enzyme cocktail-based strategies for plastics upcycling.

A theoretical index for understanding distinct land relative humidity trends in observations, reanalyses, and models

Land surface relative humidity (RH) is a key variable in the coupled land–atmosphere system that profoundly influences terrestrial hydroclimate and ecosystems. Yet historical changes in land RH are not well understood due to limited observations, biased reanalyses, and the lack of a framework for interpreting RH changes under multiple influencing factors. Here, we show that the spatiotemporal variability of land RH and its distinct historical trends among observations, reanalyses, and Earth system models are captured by a simple index based on the ratio of precipitation (P) to a modified potential evapotranspiration formulated independently of RH (PET°). The index provides a physical calibration of biased land RH in reanalyses and a quantitative framework for interpreting land RH changes. Over 1973–2024, land RH has decreased substantially, owing to the intrinsic rise in PET° with temperature and little increase in land precipitation. Reanalyses overestimate the observed RH decrease, consistent with exaggerated surface warming and precipitation decline. The index captures this coherent bias and enables a calibration using observed precipitation and temperature. Models simulate a wide range of land RH trends, but nearly all runs underrepresent the historical drying. The index captures the model spread and discrepancy and attributes them to contributions of precipitation and PET°. Weaker land RH decreases in models arise mainly from weaker subtropical precipitation declines, linked to muted intensification of subtropical highs and biased subtropical climatology. The model–observation discrepancy is unlikely explained by internal variability, implying model underestimation of forced RH decrease and a drier land future than current projections.

Plasma phosphorylated tau217 strongly associates with memory deficits in the Alzheimer’s disease spectrum

Abstract Plasma phosphorylated tau (p-tau) biomarkers open unprecedented opportunities for identifying carriers of Alzheimer’s disease pathophysiology in early disease stages using minimally invasive techniques. Plasma p-tau biomarkers are believed to reflect tau phosphorylation and secretion. However, it remains unclear to what extent the magnitude of plasma p-tau abnormalities reflects neuronal network disturbance in the form of cognitive impairment. To address this question, we included 103 cognitively unimpaired elderly and 40 cognitively impaired, amyloid-β-positive individuals from the TRIAD cohort, in addition to 336 cognitively unimpaired and 216 cognitively impaired, amyloid-β-positive older adults from the BioFINDER-2 cohort. Participants had tau PET scans, amyloid PET scans or amyloid CSF, p-tau217, p-tau181 and p-tau231 blood measures, structural T1-MRI and cognitive assessments. In this cross-sectional study, we used regression models and correlation analyses to assess the relationship between plasma biomarkers and cognitive scores. Furthermore, we applied receiver operating characteristic curves to assess cognitive impairment across plasma biomarkers. Finally, we categorized participants into amyloid (A), p-tau (T1) and tau PET (T2) positive (+) or negative (−) profiles and ran non-parametric comparisons to assess differences across cognitive domains. We found that plasma p-tau217 was more associated with cognitive performance than p-tau181 and p-tau231 and that this relationship was particularly strong for memory scores (TRIAD: βp-tau217 = −0.53, βp-tau181 = −0.35 and βp-tau231 = −0.24; BioFINDER-2: βp-tau217 = −0.52, βp-tau181 = −0.24 and βp-tau231 = −0.29). Associations in amyloid-β-positive participants resembled these results, but other cognitive scores also showed strong associations in cognitively impaired individuals. Moreover, plasma p-tau217 outperformed plasma p-tau181 and plasma p-tau231 in identifying memory impairment (area under the curve values for TRIAD: p-tau217 = 0.86, p-tau181 = 0.77 and p-tau231 = 0.75; and for BioFINDER-2: p-tau217 = 0.86, p-tau181 = 0.76 and p-tau231 = 0.81) and in identifying executive function impairment only in the BioFINDER-2 cohort (p-tau217 = 0.82, p-tau181 = 0.76 and p-tau231 = 0.76). Lastly, we showed that subtle memory deficits were present in A+T1+T2− participants for plasma p-tau217 (P = 0.007) and plasma p-tau181 (P = 0.01) in the TRIAD cohort and for all biomarkers across cognitive domains in A+T1+T2− and A+T1+T2− individuals (P < 0.001 in all) in the BioFINDER-2 cohort. The A+T1+T2− individuals showed cognitive deficits in both cohorts (P < 0.001 in all). Together, our results suggest that plasma p-tau217 stands out as a biomarker capable of identifying memory deficits attributable to Alzheimer’s disease and that memory impairment certainly occurs in amyloid-β- and plasma p-tau-positive individuals who have no significant amounts of tau in the neocortex.

Engineering a modular 44 Ti/ 44 Sc generator: eluate evaluation in preclinical models and estimation of human radiation dosimetry

Background: 44 Sc/ 47 Sc is an attractive theranostic pair for targeted in vivo positron emission tomographic (PET) imaging and beta-particle treatment of cancer. The 44 Ti/ 44 Sc generator allows daily onsite production of this diagnostic isotope, which may provide an attractive alternative for PET facilities that lack in-house irradiation capabilities. Early animal and patient studies have demonstrated the utility of 44 Sc. In our current study, we built and evaluated a novel clinical-scale 44 Ti/ 44 Sc generator, explored the pharmacokinetic profiles of 44 ScCl 3 , [ 44 Sc]-citrate and [ 44 Sc]-NODAGA (1,4,7-triazacyclononane,1-glutaric acid-4,7-acetic acid) in naïve mice, and estimated the radiation burden of 44 ScCl 3 in humans. Methods: 44 Ti/ 44 Sc (101.2 MBq) in 6 M HCl solution was utilized to assemble a modular ZR resin containing generator. After assembly, 44 Sc was eluted with 0.05 M HCl for further PET imaging and biodistribution studies in female Swiss Webster mice. Based on the biodistribution data, absorbed doses of 44 / 47 ScCl 3 in human adults were calculated for 18 organs and tissues using the IDAC-Dose software. Results: 44 Ti in 6 M HCl was loaded onto the organic resin generator with a yield of 99.97%. After loading and initial stabilization, 44 ScCl 3 was eluted with 0.05 M HCl in typical yields of 82.9 ± 5.3% (N = 16), which was normalized to the estimated generator capacity. Estimated generator capacity was computed based on elution time interval and the total amount of 44 Ti loaded on the generator. Run in forward and reverse directions, the 44 Sc/ 44 Ti ratio from a primary column was significantly improved from 1038 ± 440 to 3557 ± 680 (Bq/Bq) when a secondary, replaceable, ZR resin cartridge was employed at the flow outlet. In vivo imaging and ex vivo distribution studies of the reversible modular generator for 44 ScCl 3 , [ 44 Sc]-citrate and [ 44 Sc]-NODAGA show that free 44 Sc remained in the circulation significantly longer than the chelated 44 Sc. The dose estimation of 44 ScCl 3 reveals that the radiation burden is 0.146 mSv/MBq for a 70 kg adult male and 0.179 mSv/MBq for a 57 kg adult female. Liver, spleen and heart wall will receive the highest absorbed dose: 0.524, 0.502, and 0.303 mGy/MBq, respectively, for the adult male. Conclusions: A clinical-scale 44 Ti/ 44 Sc generator system with a modular design was developed to supply 44 ScCl 3 in 0.05 M HCl, which is suitable for further radiolabeling and in vivo use. Our data demonstrated that free 44 ScCl 3 remained in the circulation for extended periods, which resulted in approximately 10 times greater radiation burden than stably chelated 44 Sc. Stable 44 Sc/ 47 Sc-complexation will be more favorable for in vivo use and for clinical utility.

Silver Nanowire-Indium Zinc Oxide Composite Flexible Transparent Conducting Electrodes Made by Spin- coating and Photonic Curing

Realizing high-throughput, low-cost perovskite solar cell (PSC) manufacturing is highly sought-after in photovoltaic (PV) research in recent years. To fully achieve roll-to-roll (R2R) manufacturing of PSCs, it is important to consider the flexible transparent electrode (TE). PET/ITO is a commonly used substrate for making flexible PSCs. When optimizing transparent conducting materials, there is a tradeoff between sheet resistance (Rsh) and optical transparency. Because commercial PET/ITO substrates are made with slow (~1 m/min) vacuum deposition processes, they tend to be expensive. Therefore, it would be advantageous to develop a high-throughput, R2R compatible, solution-deposition approach for fabricating the TE on PET substrates. While various solution-deposition processes, such as blade coating or slot-die coating, can achieve the desired web speed of > 10 m/min, there is still a need to improve the post-deposition annealing step. One promising post-deposition processing technique is intense-pulsed-light processing, also known as photonic curing. Photonic curing delivers short (0.01 – 100 ms) pulses of broadband (200 – 1500 nm) light from a xenon flash lamp to the samples. Any materials in the sample stack that absorb light will convert the impinging light pulse into heat within the sample, which drives changes in the sample (calcination, phase change, crystallization, etc.). Photonic curing has three main advantages over thermal annealing: 1. Faster processing speed (milliseconds or seconds). 2. Compatibility with plastic substrates. 3. Smaller physical footprint and less wasted energy. Since the light pulses are on for a short time, the intensity can be high while the total energy delivered to the sample is low, minimizing damages to the plastic substrates. In this work, a hybrid TE material is fabricated on PET substrates using photonic curing. The hybrid TE material contains a layer of silver nanowires (AgNWs) and a layer of metal-oxide (InOx, ITO, IZO, etc.). The AgNWs increase the light absorbed by the film during the photonic curing process, which leads to higher processing temperatures, possibly improving the conversion of the metal-oxide layer. The AgNWs also enhance the electrical conductivity of the final TE layer after photonic curing. A AgNW and metal-oxide bilayer is formed by spin coating each solution onto the PET substrate sequentially followed by a single photonic curing process. We use average optical transmittance (Tavg) from 400 to 700 nm and average Rsh to evaluate the TE performance. The following photonic curing parameters are varied to optimize Tavg (maximize) and Rsh (minimize): Pulse voltage, pulse envelope, number of micro-pulses, duty cycle, number of pulses, and pulse repetition rate. Preliminarily, we also observe a significant impact on the TE properties by the volume of AgNW deposited during the spin coating deposition step. Using dispense volumes of 80 µL and 20 µL, we achieve samples with Tavg = 73%, Rsh = 19 Ω/sq, and roughness = 9 nm, and Tavg = 83%, Rsh = 58 Ω/sq, and roughness = 5.6 nm, respectively, after photonic curing.

Production of Radioisotopes of Scandium for Imaging and Therapy (Final Report)

The theranostic approach is a powerful technique that enables scientists and physicians to diagnose and treat diseases using the same targeting moiety labeled with radionuclides for imaging and therapy. A challenge behind synthesizing and evaluating these theranostic radiopharmaceuticals lies in the production of suitable radionuclides. This study aimed to investigate the production of high radionuclidic purity 43 Sc from enriched [ 46 Ti]TiO 2 for Positron Emission Tomography (PET) and 47 Sc from enriched [ 50 Ti]TiO 2 for targeted radiotherapy, as well as establish a target recycling technique for continued production of these radionuclides. Methods: Targets were prepared with 100 mg of either enriched [ 46 Ti]TiO 2 or [ 50 Ti]TiO 2 , pressed into pellets, and placed into Ta target holders with a 0.127 mm natTi cover foil. The 46 Ti targets were bombarded with 18 MeV protons at 20 µA for 1.5 h, while 50Ti targets were bombarded with 24 MeV protons at 20 µA for 4 or 8 h. The radioscandium nuclides were purified using branched N, N, N’, N’ -tetra-2-ethylhexyldiglycolamide (DGA) resin. The titanium targets were recycled by precipitating the dissolved Ti collected from the column effluent and wash streams, pH adjustment, vacuum filtration, and then drying the solid at 250 °C prior to reforming the target for the subsequent bombardment. The apparent molar activity of the isolated radioscandiums was analyzed by titration with 1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane-1,4,7,10-tetraacetic acid (DOTA). The relative imaging performance of 18 F, 43 Sc, and 68 Ga were analyzed with PET images acquired with 30-min static scans. Results: The average radioscandium recovery for 43Sc was 91.7 ± 7.4 %, with a radionuclidic purity of 98.8 %. The average recovery of 47Sc was 89.9 ± 3.9 %, with a radionuclidic purity of 90.8%. The average recovery of enriched TiO2 was 96 ± 4.0 %. The highest apparent molar activity for [43Sc]Sc-DOTA was 23.2 GBq/µmol and 3.39 GBq/µmol for [ 47 Sc]Sc-DOTA. The order of PET resolution from highest to lowest was 18 F > 43 Sc > 68 Ga. Conclusions: This work demonstrates the feasibility of using enriched recycled [ 46 Ti]TiO 2 and [ 50 Ti]TiO 2 targets for the production of the 43 Sc and 47 Sc theranostic isotope pair in high purity.

Non-Destructive, Three-Dimensional Imaging of Processes in the Rhizosphere Utilizing High Energy Photons

Soil structure, which can be described as the aggregation and distribution of pore spaces, regulates carbon, nutrient, and water cycling across the Earth system. Yet the inability to make quantitative, dynamic, in situ measurements of soil structure and rhizosphere carbon flow has prevented meaningful incorporation of soil structural processes into Earth System Models (ESMs). The key limitations are: (i) Lack of scale integration between micron-scale soil structure and ecosystem-scale models, (ii) Poor functional linkage between soil structural properties and biogeochemical processes, and (iii) Absence of dynamic 3D measurements of rhizosphere structural changes and carbon transformations. To address these challenges, we developed a new integrated positron emission tomography (PET) - microcomputed tomography (CT) imaging platform that enables the first 4D (spatial 3D and time), non-invasive, quantitative imaging of carbon allocation and rhizosphere structural dynamics in living plants and intact soils. The system combines: • Rhizo-PET (R-PET): a high-resolution positron emission tomography scanner optimized for 11 CO 2 tracing in plant roots. • a-Se micro-CT: a high-contrast, high-spatial resolution CT system based on amorphous selenium (a-Se) direct conversion technology, enabling micron-scale visualization of soil structure and root–soil interfaces. Together, these advances allow us to quantify how carbon exudates move, transform, and stabilize within the rhizosphere, directly informing missing processes in BER-relevant carbon cycle models.

Development of CD46 targeted alpha theranostics in prostate cancer using 134 Ce/ 225 Ac-Macropa-PEG 4 -YS5

Rationale: 225 Ac, a long-lived α-emitter with a half-life of 9.92 days, has garnered significant attention as a therapeutic radionuclide when coupled with monoclonal antibodies and other targeting vectors. Nevertheless, its clinical utility has been hampered by potential off-target toxicity, a lack of optimized chelators for 225 Ac, and limitations in radiolabeling methods. In a prior study evaluating the effectiveness of CD46-targeted radioimmunotherapy, we found great therapeutic efficacy but also significant toxicity at higher doses. To address these challenges, we have developed a radioimmunoconjugate called 225 Ac-Macropa-PEG 4 -YS5, incorporating a stable PEGylated linker to maximize tumoral uptake and increase tumor-to-background ratios. Our research demonstrates that this conjugate exhibits greater anti-tumor efficacy while minimizing toxicity in prostate cancer 22Rv1 tumors. Methods: We synthesized Macropa.NCS and Macropa-PEG 4/8 -TFP esters and prepared Macropa-PEG 0/4/8 -YS5 (with nearly ~1:1 ratio of macropa chelator to antibody YS5) as well as DOTA-YS5 conjugates. These conjugates were then radiolabeled with 225 Ac in a 2 M NH 4 OAc solution at 30 °C, followed by purification using YM30K centrifugal purification. Subsequently, we conducted biodistribution studies and evaluated antitumor activity in nude mice (nu/nu) bearing prostate 22Rv1 xenografts in both single-dose and fractionated dosing studies. Micro-PET imaging studies were performed with 134 Ce-Macropa-PEG 0/4/8 -YS5 in 22Rv1 xenografts for 7 days. Toxicity studies were also performed in healthy athymic nude mice. Results: As expected, we achieved a >95% radiochemical yield when labeling Macropa-PEG 0/4/8 -YS5 with 225 Ac, regardless of the chelator ratios (ranging from 1 to 7.76 per YS5 antibody). The isolated yield exceeded 60% after purification. Such high conversions were not observed with the DOTA-YS5 conjugate, even at a higher ratio of 8.5 chelators per antibody (RCY of 83%, an isolated yield of 40%). Biodistribution analysis at 7 days post-injection revealed higher tumor uptake for the 225 Ac-Macropa-PEG 4 -YS5 (82.82 ± 38.27 %ID/g) compared to other conjugates, namely 225 Ac-Macropa-PEG 0/8 -YS5 (38.2 ± 14.4/36.39 ± 12.4 %ID/g) and 225 Ac-DOTA-YS5 (29.35 ± 7.76 %ID/g). The PET Imaging of 134 Ce-Macropa-PEG 0/4/8 -YS5 conjugates resulted in a high tumor uptake, and tumor to background ratios. In terms of antitumor activity, 225 Ac-Macropa-PEG 4 -YS5 exhibited a substantial response, leading to prolonged survival compared to 225 Ac-DOTA-YS5, particularly when administered at 4.625 kBq doses, in single or fractionated dose regimens. Chronic toxicity studies observed mild to moderate renal toxicity at 4.625 and 9.25 kBq doses. Conclusions: Our study highlights the promise of 225 Ac-Macropa-PEG 4 -YS5 for targeted alpha particle therapy. The 225 Ac-Macropa-PEG 4 -YS5 conjugate demonstrates improved biodistribution, reduced off-target binding, and enhanced therapeutic efficacy, particularly at lower doses, compared to 225 Ac-DOTA-YS5. Incorporating theranostic 134 Ce PET imaging further enhances the versatility of macropa-PEG conjugates, offering a more effective and safer approach to cancer treatment. Overall, this methodology has a high potential for broader clinical applications.

Provided herein are methods and compositions for the electrochemical selective radiofluorination of aromatic molecules. The resulting fluorine-18 labeled compounds are ideal radionuclides for use in Positron Emission Tomography (PET); they are also difficult to radiolabel efficiently and with high specific activity using existing approaches. For example, radiopharmaceuticals such as [F18]L-DOPA, which is indispensable in PET brain disease imaging, may be made electrochemically with high radiochemical yield and high specific activity using 18F-. The invention process described herein opens new possibilities and provides wider access to PET tracers such as 18F-L-Dopa, since 18F- is much more widely available than the 18F2, currently used for synthesis of electron rich substrates.

Synthesis of hyperbranched polymer films via electrodeposition and oxygen-tolerant surface-initiated photoinduced polymerization

Hypothesis Hyperbranched polymers, not only possess higher functionality, but are also easier to prepare compared to dendrimers and dendric polymers. Combining electrodeposition and surface-initiated photoinduced electron transfer-reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (SI-PET-RAFT) polymerization is hypothesized to be a novel strategy for preparing hyperbranched polymer films on conductive surfaces without degassing. Experiments In this study, polymer brush grafted films with four different architectures (i.e. linear, branched, linear- block -branched, and branched- block -linear) were prepared on gold-coated glass substrates using electrodeposition, followed by SI-PET-RAFT polymerization. The resulting film structure and thickness, surface topology, absorption property, and electrochemical behavior were confirmed by spectroscopy, microscopy, microbalance technique, and impedance measurement. Findings These hyperbranched polymer brushes were capable of forming a thicker but more uniformly covered films compared to linear polymer brush films, demonstrating that hyperbranched polymer films can be potentially useful for fabricating protective polymer coatings on various conductive surfaces.

Metacognition, cortical thickness, and tauopathy in aging

We investigated self-rating of cognitive task performance (self-appraisal) and the difference between self-rating and actual task performance (appraisal discrepancy) in cognitively healthy older adults and their relationship with cortical thickness and Alzheimer's disease (AD) biomarkers, amyloid and tau. All participants (N = 151) underwent neuropsychological testing and 1.5T structural magnetic resonance imaging. A subset (N = 66) received amyloid-PET with [11C] PiB and tau-PET with [18F] Flortaucipir. We found that worse performers had lower self-appraisal ratings, but still overestimated their performance, consistent with the Dunning-Kruger effect. Self-appraisal rating and appraisal discrepancy revealed distinct relationships with cortical thickness and AD pathology. Greater appraisal discrepancy, indicating overestimation, was related to thinning of inferior-lateral temporal, fusiform, and rostral anterior cingulate cortices. Lower self-appraisal was associated with higher entorhinal and inferior temporal tau. These results suggest that overestimation could implicate structural atrophy beyond AD pathology, while lower self-appraisal could indicate early behavioral alteration due to AD pathology, supporting the notion of subjective cognitive decline prior to objective deficits.

A hybrid chemical-biological approach can upcycle mixed plastic waste with reduced cost and carbon footprint

Derived from renewable feedstocks, such as biomass, polylactic acid (PLA) is considered a more environmentally friendly plastic than conventional petroleum-based polyethylene terephthalate (PET). However, PLA must still be recycled, and its growing popularity and mixture with PET plastics at the disposal stage poses a cross-contamination threat in existing recycling facilities and results in low-value and low-quality recycled products. Hybrid upcycling has been proposed as a promising sustainable solution for mixed plastic waste, but its techno-economic and life cycle environmental performance remain understudied. We propose a hybrid upcycling approach using a biocompatible ionic liquid (IL) to first chemically depolymerize plastics and then convert the depolymerized stream via biological upgrading with no extra separation. Here we show that over 95% of mixed PET/PLA was depolymerized into the respective monomers, which then served as the sole carbon source for the growth of Pseudomonas putida, enabling the conversion of the depolymerized plastics into biodegradable polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs). In comparison to conventional commercial PHAs, the estimated optimal production cost and carbon footprint are reduced by 62% and 29%, respectively.

Chemical recycling of post-consumer polyester wastes using a tertiary amine organocatalyst

Recycling diverse waste plastics poses challenges due to complex sorting and processing, resulting in high costs and inefficiency. To tackle this, we present a metal-free catalytic sorting method for targeted deconstruction of polyester from post-consumer plastic waste, encompassing textiles, plastic mixtures, and multilayer packaging materials. This method employs N-methylpiperidine, a tertiary amine catalyst in methanol, to depolymerize polyethylene terephthalate (PET). Operating under these conditions (160°C, 1 h), we achieve 100% yields of dimethyl terephthalate and ethylene glycol. This technique also effectively breaks down other polyesters, including polylactic acid, polycarbonate, and polybutylene terephthalate, yielding high-yield monomers at relatively low temperatures. Through comprehensive nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) analysis, we propose that N-methylpiperidine’s role is in enhancing methanol nucleophilicity and activating PET’s ester bond. Our insights advance the chemical recycling of post-consumer plastic waste, offering a potentially simple and efficient path to closing the polyester production loop.

Role of Amorphous Chains in Nanoplastic Formation from Semicrystalline Polymers

Semicrystalline polymers, e.g., polyethylene terephthalate (PET), release micro- (100 nm to 1 mm) and nanoplastics (up to 100 nm) [MNPL] when they are degraded under quiescent conditions. However, the exact molecular mechanisms leading to material fragmentation into MNPL are unknown. Here, we monitor the evolution of chain molecular weight and the MNPL production kinetics during hydrolysis of PET pellets. We find that only ~0.6% of the amorphous phase ester bonds are hydrolyzed at the onset of MNPL release. Then, by combining a random scission model with measured amorphous spacings, we estimate that only ~15% of the stress transmitters in the amorphous phase, namely, bridges and entangled loops, have failed by this point. Thus, spontaneous fragmentation of the semicrystalline nanostructure occurs despite significant intercrystalline connectivity. We resolve this apparent contradiction by proposing that fragmentation can only occur when progressive tie-chain scission causes the material to undergo the ductile/brittle transition. Mechanistically, we speculate that the internal stresses responsible for material fragmentation are caused by processing (i.e., residual stresses) and/or sample densification induced by chemi-crystallization. We discuss additional factors that may affect our analysis and thus require further investigation, such as skin-core effects, preferential degradation of stress transmitters and/or recrystallization processes.

Thermodynamically leveraged solventless aerobic deconstruction of polyethylene-terephthalate plastics over a single-site molybdenum-dioxo catalyst

Here, we describe the solventless catalytic deconstruction of polyethylene-terephthalate (PET) under an aerobic atmosphere, mediated by an earth-abundant, low-cost activated carbon (AC)-supported single-site molybdenum-dioxo catalyst (AC/MoO 2 ). Catalytic amounts of AC/MoO 2 selectively convert waste PET into its monomer, terephthalic acid (TPA), within 4 h at 265 °C with yields as high as 94% under 1 atm air. Pure crystalline TPA product sublimes from the reaction hot zone, crystallizing on the reactor cold zone, thus avoiding the need for separation and purification steps. This process does not employ any hazardous/toxic reducing agents or solvents, and the catalyst can be recycled multiple times without loss of activity, rendering this process highly atom-efficient. According to computational and experimental mechanistic studies, the AC/MoO 2 catalyst mediates a thermoneutral metal-catalyzed β-scission step, followed by an exothermic step that converts the vinyl benzoate intermediate to TPA and acetaldehyde using trace amounts of moisture in the air. The formation of gaseous acetaldehyde makes the isolation of TPA from the reaction mixture facile and industrially favorable, especially since solvents are unnecessary. The present methodology is also extended to the deconstruction of other frequently used polyester plastics, polybutylene terephthalate (PBT), polyethylene naphthalate (PEN), and polyethylene furanoate (PEF), and operates equally well with post-consumer waste products. Notably, this process is also compatible with plastic mixtures of polyesters with polyolefins, polyamides, and polycarbonates, leading to the selective conversion of each polyester to the corresponding monomer, leaving the residual polymer unchanged and polyester-free.

Thermodynamic Properties of Aggregate Coated by Different Types of Waste Plastic: Adhesion and Moisture Resistance of Asphalt-Aggregate Systems

The utilization of acidic aggregates in hot-mix asphalt (HMA) is often inevitable due to the limited supply of locally available aggregates, posing a potential threat of moisture damage to asphalt pavements. In this regard, the use of urban waste plastic to coat the low-quality aggregates is a promising way to improve the moisture resistance. This study fundamentally evaluated the compatibility between asphalt and plastic-coated aggregate by measuring surface energy, and for the first time compared the effects of different types of waste plastic including high-density polyethylene (HDPE), low-density polyethylene (LDPE), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), and polypropylene (PP). The plastic-coating significantly altered the chemistry of aggregate surface by increasing the nonpolar components and reducing the polar components. Such changes remarkably increased the dry adhesion energy between asphalt and aggregate and enhanced the wettability of aggregate. For the acidic aggregates, the polymeric treatment could decrease the value of wet adhesive, which indicated the debonding tendency in the presence of water was reduced. Finally, the energy ratios of the asphalt-aggregate combinations significantly increased by the surface pretreatment, which proved the effect of waste plastic coating on improving the moisture damage resistance of asphalt mixtures. By comparison, the HDPE coating was the most effective way to enhance the compatibility with asphalt, followed by PP and LDPE coatings. The PVC and PET coatings were investigated as the least effective way. In conclusion, this study cannot only contribute to the potential large-scale utilization of waste plastic but also remove the obstacles of using large quantities of acidic natural aggregate in asphalt pavements.

Ionizing photon interactions modulate the optical properties of crystals with femtosecond scale temporal resolution

In this work, we continue our study of a new method for the detection of ionizing radiation with the potential for a dramatic improvement in coincidence time resolution (CTR) for time-of-flight positron emission tomography (ToF-PET) using the modulation of a material's optical properties instead of the scintillation mechanism. Our previous work has shown that for non-scintillation materials such as bismuth silicon oxide (BSO) and cadmium telluride (CdTe), their refractive index can be modulated by annihilation photon interactions. Additionally, the ultrafast nature of this process however remains unexplored. The ionizing radiation-induced charge carriers alter the local band structure in these materials, thus changing the complex refractive index. This mechanism is routinely used at the linac coherent light source (LCLS) facility of the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory to measure x-ray pulse arrival times with femtosecond scale resolution for photon energies between 0.5 and 10 keV. The method described here follows that example by using a frequency chirped visible continuum pulse to provide a monotonic wavelength-to-time mapping by which one can measure the time-dependent refractive index modulation. In addition, we describe an interference-based measurement setup that allows for significantly improved sensitivity while preserving a timing precision of approximately 10 fs (σ) when measuring the arrival time of below 10 keV x-ray pulses with yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG) crystal. The method is presented in the context of ToF-PET application with further discussions on the potential CTR achievable if a similar detection concept is adopted for detecting 511 keV photons. Semi-empirical analysis indicates that the predicted CTR achievable is on the order of 1 ps (FWHM).

A Comparison of Emerging Nonfluoropolymer-Based Coextruded PV Backsheets to Industry-Benchmark Technologies

As the photovoltaic (PV) industry is rapidly expanding around the world, there has been an increasing interest in extending the lifespan of PV modules. Concern has also emerged regarding the recyclability of modules and their component materials, including fluoropolymer-based backsheets. Laminated polyethylene-terephthalate (PET) core backsheets have traditionally been used in the PV industry, but new, coextruded polyolefin (PO) backsheets show promise as an improved alternative. In this work, minimodule and coupon samples of seven different backsheets (made of layers including contemporary PET and fluoropolymers, novel PO, and polyamide materials) were run through hygrometric- or UV photolytic-accelerated aging to identify and better understand each material's degradation modes and the backsheets' field reliability. In addition to the artificial aging, the natural weathering methods used in this article are described. The comprehensive set of chemical, mechanical, and structural characterizations at intermittent read points in this article is presented, including: visual appearance and color; gloss; mechanical tensile testing; I-V performance; electroluminescence (EL) imaging; dielectric breakdown; Fourier-transform infrared-chemical structure; X-ray-polymer structure; and differential scanning calorimetry-crystalline content. After 4000 h of aging, a strong correlation occurs between initial physical characteristics (mechanical tensile test) and operating performance (EL and I-V characteristics).
