BASS: An R Package for Fitting and Performing Sensitivity Analysis of Bayesian Adaptive Spline Surfaces

In this work, we present the R package BASS as a tool for nonparametric regression. The primary focus of the package is fitting fully Bayesian adaptive spline surface (BASS) models and performing global sensitivity analyses of these models. The BASS framework is similar to that of Bayesian multivariate adaptive regression splines (BMARS) from Denison, Mallick, and Smith (1998), but with many added features. The software is built to efficiently handle significant amounts of data with many continuous or categorical predictors and with functional response. Under our Bayesian framework, most priors are automatic but these can be modified by the user to focus on parsimony and the avoidance of overfitting. If directed to do so, the software uses parallel tempering to improve the reversible jump Markov chain Monte Carlo (RJMCMC) methods used to perform inference. We discuss the implementation of these features and present the performance of BASS in a number of analyses of simulated and real data.

`SkyPy`: A package for modelling the Universe

SkyPy is an open-source Python package for simulating the astrophysical sky. It comprises a library of physical and empirical models across a range of observables and a command-line script to run end-to-end simulations. The library provides functions that sample realisations of sources and their associated properties from probability distributions. Simulation pipelines are constructed from these models using a YAML-based configuration syntax, while task scheduling and data dependencies are handled internally and the modular design allows users to interface with external software. SkyPy is developed and maintained by a diverse community of domain experts with a focus on software sustainability and interoperability. By fostering development, it provides a framework for correlated simulations of a range of cosmological probes including galaxy populations, large scale structure, the cosmic microwave background, supernovae and gravitational waves. Version 0.4 implements functions that model various properties of galaxies including luminosity functions, redshift distributions and optical photometry from spectral energy distribution templates. Future releases will provide additional modules, for example, to simulate populations of dark matter halos and model the galaxy-halo connection, making use of existing software packages from the astrophysics community where appropriate.

Mantaray: A Rust Package for Ray Tracing Ocean Surface Gravity Waves

Ocean surface gravity waves are an important component of air-sea interaction, influencing energy, momentum, and gas exchanges across the ocean-atmosphere interface. In specific applications such as refraction by ocean currents or bathymetry, ray tracing provides a computationally efficient way to gain insight into wave propagation. In this paper, we introduce Mantaray, an open-source software package implemented in Rust, with a Python interface, that solves the ray equations for ocean surface gravity waves. Mantaray is designed for performance, robustness, and ease of use. The package is modular to facilitate further development and can currently be applied to both idealized and realistic wave propagation problems (Fig. 1).

Initial Temperature Testing of Advanced Manufactured Melt Wire Package

As a part of the In-Pile Instrumentation Program, The Idaho National Laboratory (INL) has recently established in-house capabilities to fabricate and test new advanced manufactured sensors for measuring the peak irradiation temperature inside a nuclear test reactor. Although nuclear test reactors can use standard methods of real-time temperature monitoring, such as thermocouples, the complexity of feedthroughs and attachment complications to collect real-time measurements greatly increases the cost of the experiment. Passive monitoring techniques may be utilized that exploit the melting point of well characterized material (standard melt wires), however, the limited space available for instrumentation during experiments is also a challenge. To accommodate the challenge, INL has expanded its temperature detection instrumentation capabilities paired with the advancement of in-house advanced manufacturing options to include printed melt wires for peak irradiation temperature measurement. The advanced manufactured melt wire package can determine peak temperatures in experiments that can fit the challenging space available during irradiation. Recent results and knowledge from this ongoing work have made it possible to develop unique temperature sensors that can accomplish user specific temperature ranges inside the harsh environments experienced during radiation testing. This report summarizes the initial temperature testing using fabricated melt wires with two different melting temperatures, silver (melting temperature of ~960 °C) and solder (melting temperature of ~160 °C), that were initially tested for their relative melting points using non-standard method of furnace and hot plate testing under normal air conditions. Future work will include more controlled way of testing printed melt wires under inert gas with multiple temperature measurements followed by comparison of standard melt wire package performance for baseline characterization.

The GammaSpec Package for Automated Gamma-ray Analysis (V.1.0)

This report describes the GammaSpec package, a tool developed to automate the analysis and comparison of gamma-ray spectra. The goal of this tool is to drastically reduce, or even eliminate, currently time consuming processes for comparing large sets of gamma-ray measurements. There are a number of potential applications for this work throughout the laboratory, but particularly within Global Security. Current work flows where large numbers of measured spectra must be compared for anomolies and outliers often consist of loading and visually inspecting individual spectra, or utilizing small-batch tools. One such example is the PeakEasy tool also developed at LANL. PeakEasy has a robust and tested feature set for calibrating, identifying, and fitting gamma-ray spectra. However it’s intention was not for batch processing and automated comparison of large numbers of spectra. This tool is not intended to replace PeakEasy in an analyzers arsenal, but to instead augment it. The intention here is to automate the isolation of spectra of particular interest, which can then be studied in further detail. This report is arranged as follows. Section 2 lays out the design goals and desired functionality of the package. Section 3 describes the algorithms developed and chosen to accomplish those goals. Section 4 describes the primary interaction with the tool, as well as it’s resulting output. Following these sections, results are presented from a set of example datasets from High Purity Germanium (HPGe) detectors in Sec. 5. Finally, the current status is summarized in Sec. 6.

pvplr-python: Python package implementation of PVplr for Performance Loss Rate (PLR) analysis

Due to software fragmentation, PV system modeling teams can be limited to language specific packages, preventing cross-sectional analysis of different modeling techniques and workflows. To this end, PVplr, a popular PV performance modeling R software package, has been ported to the Python programming language. To verify and test the robustness of the port, NSRDB data has been used to simulated PV installations at native resolution (~2 million Sites), with a variety of degradation rates, degradation patterns, and modules. Performance Ratios were calculated using the ported functions from pvplr-python and compared against Rdtools YoY values. Due to the complicated nature of degradation, a new metric has been proposed to quantify the performance loss of a system. The cumulative production loss, is the total amount of energy lost due to the degrading performance of the system. Cumulative production loss alleviates the problems with fitting linear functions to non-linear degradation. Cumulative Production loss was shown to better estimate the total lost revenue for non-linear degradation patterns. $XbX + UTC$ was found to most accurately predict the total lost revenue in simulated systems.

2024 Status Report - Fiberboard Properties and Degradation Rates for Storage of 9975 Shipping Package in KAC

Fiberboard assemblies in the 9975 package were identified as susceptible to aging and degradation under long-term storage conditions. Thermal, mechanical, and physical properties have been measured on fiberboard samples aging for up to 19 years at accelerated conditions. The aging environments include elevated temperature up to 250 ºF (the maximum allowed service temperature for fiberboard in 9975 packages) and elevated humidity. Accelerated aging results have been analyzed and used to build aging models. Correlations relating several properties (thermal conductivity, energy absorption, weight, dimensions, and density) to their rate of change in potential storage environments have been developed. Combined with an estimate of the actual conditions the fiberboard experiences in K-Area Complex (KAC), these models allow development of service life predictions.

Credible Criticality Safety Margin in the 30B Package with LEU+ UF 6 and Hypothetical Water Ingress

The commercial nuclear industry is pursuing advancements in fuel and reactor design that increase the uranium enrichment above 5 wt. % 235 U. These advancements will necessitate the ability to transport bulk quantities of UF 6 at increased enrichments. Currently, the 30B cylinder is the primary container used by the industry for UF6 storage and transportation and has a long history of successful shipments. This container can transport up to 2,277 kg of UF 6 at a maximum enrichment of 5 wt. % 235 U. Previous evaluations have assessed the potential impact of criticality safety for 30B transport at higher enrichments but assumed moderator intrusion would not require evaluation. Although current regulations allow for the exception of moderator intrusion for UF6 packages through the design and quality control of the package content, this exception is limited to enrichments up to 5 wt. % 235 U. Thus, an investigation of moderator intrusion into a 30B cylinder should be performed.
