Generating fractal-like surfaces on general purpose mesh-connected computers

Realistic images of natural surfaces are often generated using computationally expensive stochastic modeling techniques. Here a parallel procedure to generate such models is presented. The target machines are general-purpose mesh-connected computers. The complexity of the procedure is similar to that of a proposed special-purpose parallel fractal generator.

Push-pull converter with energy saving circuit for protecting switching transistors from peak power stress

In a push-pull converter, switching transistors are protected from peak power stresses by a separate snubber circuit in parallel with each comprising a capacitor and an inductor in series, and a diode in parallel with the inductor. The diode is connected to conduct current of the same polarity as the base-emitter juction of the transistor so that energy stored in the capacitor while the transistor is switched off, to protect it against peak power stress, discharges through the inductor when the transistor is turned on, and after the capacitor is discharges through the diode. To return this energy to the power supply, or to utilize this energy in some external circuit, the inductor may be replaced by a transformer having its secondary winding connected to the power supply or to the external circuit.

Three-dimensional direct particle simulation on the Connection Machine

This paper presents the algorithms necessary for an efficient data parallel implementation of a 3D particle simulation. In particular, a general master/slave algorithm and a fast sorting algorithm are described and the use of these algorithms in a particle simulation is outlined. A particle simulation using these algorithms has been implemented on a 32768 processor Connection Machine that is capable of simulating over 30 million particles at an average rate of 2.4-microsec/particle/step. Results are presented from the simulation of flow over an Aeroassisted Flight Experiment geometry at 100 km altitude.

An Efficient Solution Method for Multibody Systems with Loops Using Multiple Processors

This paper describes a multibody dynamics algorithm formulated for parallel implementation on multiprocessor computing platforms using the divide-and-conquer approach. The system of interest is a general topology of rigid and elastic articulated bodies with or without loops. The algorithm divides the multibody system into a number of smaller sets of bodies in chain or tree structures, called "branches" at convenient joints called "connection points", and uses an Order-N (O (N)) approach to formulate the dynamics of each branch in terms of the unknown spatial connection forces. The equations of motion for the branches, leaving the connection forces as unknowns, are implemented in separate processors in parallel for computational efficiency, and the equations for all the unknown connection forces are synthesized and solved in one or several processors. The performances of two implementations of this divide-and-conquer algorithm in multiple processors are compared with an existing method implemented on a single processor.

Wireless Temperature-Monitoring System

A relatively inexpensive instrumentation system that includes units that are connected to thermocouples and that are parts of a radio-communication network has been developed to enable monitoring of temperatures at multiple locations. Because there is no need to string wires or cables for communication, the system is well suited for monitoring temperatures at remote locations and for applications in which frequent changes of monitored or monitoring locations are needed. The system can also be adapted to monitoring of slowly varying physical quantities, other than temperature, that can be transduced by solid-state electronic sensors. electronic sensors. The system comprises any number of transmitting units and a single receiving unit. Each transmitting unit includes connections for as many as four external thermocouples, a signal-conditioning module, a control module, and a radio-communication module. The signal-conditioning module acts as an interface between the thermocouples and the rest of the transmitting unit and includes a built-in solid ambient temperature sensor that is in addition to the external thermocouples. The control module is a system-on-chip embedded processor that includes analog-to-digital converters, serial and parallel data ports, and an interface for local connection to an analog meter that is used during installation to verify correct operation. The radio-communication module contains a commercial spread-spectrum transceiver that operates in the 900-MHz industrial, scientific, and medical (ISM) frequency band. This transceiver transmits data to the receiving unit at a rate of 19,200 baud. The receiving unit includes a transceiver like that of a transmitting unit, plus a control module that contains a system-on-chip processor that includes serial data port for output to a computer that runs monitoring and/or control software, a parallel data port for output to a printer, and a seven-segment light-emitting-diode display. Each transmitting unit is battery-powered and can operate for at least seven days continuously while reporting temperatures every half hour. The receiving unit is powered by a wall-mounted transformer source. The receiving unit responds to each transmitting unit and reports the readings of each of the four thermocouples and of the ambient-temperature sensor of the transmitting unit. The end-to-end accuracy of the system is plus or minus 0.2 C over the temperature range from 0 to 100 C. The radio-communication range between the receiving and transmitting units is approximately equal to 0.5 mile (approximately equal to 0.8 km).

Efficiently modeling neural networks on massively parallel computers

Neural networks are a very useful tool for analyzing and modeling complex real world systems. Applying neural network simulations to real world problems generally involves large amounts of data and massive amounts of computation. To efficiently handle the computational requirements of large problems, we have implemented at Los Alamos a highly efficient neural network compiler for serial computers, vector computers, vector parallel computers, and fine grain SIMD computers such as the CM-2 connection machine. This paper describes the mapping used by the compiler to implement feed-forward backpropagation neural networks for a SIMD (Single Instruction Multiple Data) architecture parallel computer. Thinking Machines Corporation has benchmarked our code at 1.3 billion interconnects per second (approximately 3 gigaflops) on a 64,000 processor CM-2 connection machine (Singer 1990). This mapping is applicable to other SIMD computers and can be implemented on MIMD computers such as the CM-5 connection machine. Our mapping has virtually no communications overhead with the exception of the communications required for a global summation across the processors (which has a sub-linear runtime growth on the order of O(log(number of processors)). We can efficiently model very large neural networks which have many neurons and interconnects and our mapping can extend to arbitrarily large networks (within memory limitations) by merging the memory space of separate processors with fast adjacent processor interprocessor communications. This paper will consider the simulation of only feed forward neural network although this method is extendable to recurrent networks.

Performance of battery reconditioning on the communications technology satellite

Some real life data on the flight performance and reconditioning on the Communications Technology Satellite are presented. There are two 24-cell nominal 5 amp-hour nickel cadmium batteries on board. The two batteries are operated in parallel with isolating diodes in between and permanently connected to the housekeeping buses. The recharge can be at C over 10 or C over 20 to a 1.4 charge/discharge ratio; and recharge is terminated either when a computed 1.4 charge/discharge ratio is reached, or a charge voltage peak is reached.

Monodeuterated methane in the outer solar system. I Spectroscopic analysis of the bands at 1.55 and 1.95 microns

The analysis of the near-infrared spectrum of monodeuterated methane (CH3D) near 6400/cm and 5100/cm is presented. Three new parallel bands which have locally perturbed upper states connecting with the ground state are identified, and approximate rotational constants are derived. The band centered near 6425/cm and the 9613 A band previously analyzed by Lutz, Danehy, and Ramsay (1978) are found to form an apparent vibrational progression with the nu2 fundamental at 2200/cm, and vibrational assignments of 3nu2 and 5nu2, respectively, are proposed. Detailed comparison of the rotational constants of the states involved is shown to support these assignments.

Coupled hydromagnetic wave excitation and ion acceleration upstream of the Jovian bow shock

We extend the Lee (1982) self-consistent theory of upstream wave excitation and particle energization to address observations by Voyager 2 of sunward propagating MHD waves and diffuse suprathermal particle populations upstream of the Jovian bow shock. Two new ideas are incorporated into the theory. First, the interplanetary seed wave population is taken to be an equal admixture of waves propagating both toward and away from the shock parallel to the interplanetary magnetic field. Second, finite connection times are incorporated approximately into the theory in an effort to understand whether the particle spectra at high energy are limited by particle escape or finite connection time. It is found that finite connection times dominate the particle distribution at energies above 40 keV. In this manner the suprathermal proton distributions can be accounted for by a multiple reflection, shock acceleration theory. We find that the theory can also account for the low-frequency waves observed upstream of the shock in conjunction with the suprathermal ions.

Parallel processors and nonlinear structural dynamics algorithms and software

The adaptation of a finite element program with explicit time integration to a massively parallel SIMD (single instruction multiple data) computer, the CONNECTION Machine is described. The adaptation required the development of a new algorithm, called the exchange algorithm, in which all nodal variables are allocated to the element with an exchange of nodal forces at each time step. The architectural and C* programming language features of the CONNECTION Machine are also summarized. Various alternate data structures and associated algorithms for nonlinear finite element analysis are discussed and compared. Results are presented which demonstrate that the CONNECTION Machine is capable of outperforming the CRAY XMP/14.

Coset Codes Viewed as Terminated Convolutional Codes

In this paper, coset codes are considered as terminated convolutional codes. Based on this approach, three new general results are presented. First, it is shown that the iterative squaring construction can equivalently be defined from a convolutional code whose trellis terminates. This convolutional code determines a simple encoder for the coset code considered, and the state and branch labelings of the associated trellis diagram become straightforward. Also, from the generator matrix of the code in its convolutional code form, much information about the trade-off between the state connectivity and complexity at each section, and the parallel structure of the trellis, is directly available. Based on this generator matrix, it is shown that the parallel branches in the trellis diagram of the convolutional code represent the same coset code C(sub 1), of smaller dimension and shorter length. Utilizing this fact, a two-stage optimum trellis decoding method is devised. The first stage decodes C(sub 1), while the second stage decodes the associated convolutional code, using the branch metrics delivered by stage 1. Finally, a bidirectional decoding of each received block starting at both ends is presented. If about the same number of computations is required, this approach remains very attractive from a practical point of view as it roughly doubles the decoding speed. This fact is particularly interesting whenever the second half of the trellis is the mirror image of the first half, since the same decoder can be implemented for both parts.

High-speed dynamic domino circuit implemented with gaas mesfets

A dynamic logic circuit (AND or OR) utilizes one depletion-mode metal-semiconductor FET for precharging an internal node A, and a plurality of the same type of FETs in series, or a FET in parallel with one or more of the series connected FETs for implementing the logic function. A pair of FETs are connected to provide an output inverter with two series diodes for level shift. A coupling capacitor may be employed with a further FET to provide level shifting required between the inverter and the logic circuit output terminal. These circuits may be cascaded to form a domino chain.
